So I may have been slightly hyped for this book the past few months

For the three of you who haven't heard about this, MMPR: The Return is a story set in the future of an alternate universe of the MMPRs; one where Jason, Zack, and Trini didn't give up their powers upon the eve of the Peace Conference, and thus the team stayed together even after high school. But fast forward twenty-two years later, and the team has broken up due to some sort of tragedy - we know from the Re-Imagine prologue in the 30 Year Anniversary book, Zordon and Alpha were destroyed by Zedd and Rita. But other stuff seems to have happened too. What is that stuff? I guess we're about to find out!

Oh, and I should mention this was written by the original Pink Ranger herself, Amy Jo Johnson. (and her partner, Matt Hotson.) That might be important to know.

It's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #1!

= Three pages in and Jason's already getting his ass kicked. You're forty-five years old, man, you should be at the club

= I know this was debated a bit when the book was announced - how it would line up with Thuy and JDF's passings, especially after coming off the heels of Once and Always, where the focal point was Trini's daughter taking up her powers after Trini's death. (For what it's worth, this book was first conceived pre-pandemic, long before OaA. Making comics takes a long time.) And while Tommy is still a bit up in the air (despite what we'll see in a few pages) Trini does seem to have definitively passed due to illness.

While I definitely get the frustration of Thuy's passing essentially sealing Trini's fate - especially in a comic book, where you don't have to worry about actor restrictions - I'm a little more generous towards it here because Amy and Thuy were close friends and she actually dealt with her death personally compared to how the OaA writers, well......didn't. And this issue is clearly paralleling Kimberly's motivations and feelings to Amy's real-life ones, so this just feels like another part of that.

(Also to contrast OaA's handling of Trini - a) her passing here isn't caused by a graphic onscreen explosion, proving the whole "well they HAD to show it onscreen for more impact!!!" was bullshit b) her friends AND THE WIDER COMMUNITY are actually grieving and talking about her impact on everyone as well as using the non-actor-restriction to SHOW it and c) The book actually gives her a JOB. TWO jobs!!!!!!! Yeah OaA why the fuck did you send ZACK to Congress WHEN IT CLEARLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN TRINI

= so anyway Jason's gone rogue and was pretending he's the main character until he suddenly went missing, as shown in the first few pages. And Billy and Zack want to become Rangers again to try and find him.

= but the thing is guys, Kim has won the idgaf war. She's depressed, she's traumatized, she spent twenty-two years raising a child with Tommy's genes all by herself, she's tired. She does NOT want to be wrapped up in Jason's midlife crisis drama

= OLIVIA THAT'S FUCKING OLIVIAAAAAAAAAAAA and she already sounds so CUTE. If you go back to the diner scene you can see the phone constantly buzzing until Kim finally puts it away. She's like mom. mom. mom. MOM

= also just because the tragic Tomberly family storyline already makes me want to kms do you think that ring is kind of small and plain because Tommy and Kim were so young when they got married and it's all Tommy could afford. And Kim still wears it to this day. I want to die

= It's already been confirmed that Selena is indeed referring to Sylvia here, so I won't talk about that. What I DO want to talk about is Kim's casual momwear. Those sweatpants!!!!!!!!!!

The fact that t0mberly is literally “teen love/first lovers” thing and the fans can’t get over it always catch me. How many couples you know from your school that are together until nowadays???

I mean, they literally met each other at 16 years old (in comics, 15) and I really doubt they lost their virginity together. When I was at high school literally 1 couple lasted until today (I mean, I gratuated at 2008) and we had like 150 people at senior high in each senior class, at least 4 couples dated at this time.

Enjoy that t0mberly happened because they wanted to make Tommy likeable and maybe were afraid since he was under Rita’s spell. In original version we all know the green ranger died and since Tommy got all that popularity, he came back to be propped as leader, most powerful ranger, most pure energy and get the most popular girl of the school (let’s not forget he took not only Jason’s leadership as ranger, Jason’s girl, but also his spot as the quarteback even when he never played football before lol).

So, yeah, I’m for Jimberly and Katherommy. Not only because Jason and Kim are my fav rangers of all, but also because Jimberly was hinted all the way in the show until Tommy appears and they changed plans due, first of all, they were afraid kids couldn’t accept the evil green and made him link to Kim, second because salary war with actors and JDF was already a dad with wife and kid that saw his big opportunity to make money by his popularity in a kid’s show and hold AJJ and David Yost with him. ASJ was a baby with 17 years old with a big ego and so many hours to work and much less money to spend, thing that the ASJ himself said. I won’t take sides here because I can understand both sides (ASJ and JDF) in this case, also it is not a post about the actors, who I know that aren’t saints, none of them.

It’s pretty clear the cliché dynamic between leader jocker x popular pretty girl that existed between Jason/Kim and things were meant to be this way because, at first, Tommy won’t last long in the show. And so is truth what I said, that Tommy took all spotlights and, guess what! Dynamic leader jocker x popular pretty girl!

Also for the things the way happened, made much more sense to me Tommy and Kat to marry and have kids than his highschool sweetheart first love he met at 16. Katherommy has a mature dynamic, where Tommy is more responsible and mature, knowing how to deal with things in his team and personal life. One thing more that made TomKat better (in my POV, of course) is the fact Kat doesn’t was always in dangerous screaming for Tommy to save her, even when she was interested in him since the first time they met and she was under a spell + he was dating Kim or after she joined officially the team.

Don’t ever come to me to say Kat is a replace to Kim in Tommy’s heart. Kat was always brave, good and never ever tried to take Tommy from Kim, even when they dated long distance, she was always respectful and polite. Also risked her life UNMORPHED to make spelled!Tommy recover his sense when no one in the Zeo team did the same. THAT IS THE WOMAN SHE IS!

Let’s take Turbo movie again as example! They aren’t in school anymore, Kat is already working as teacher and we see clear as water that all of them are much more mature and trying to live the best they can with the responsabilities they have. Nothing is more clear than Jason going into Kim and Kim running after Jason in any dangerous situation posible + the final winning scene they party together. Same goes to TomKat after the same final winning scene, there’s no a SINGLE moment Tommy look after Kim to party with her or vice-versa. Jimberly it’s a love story that merge from long date friends that fell in love with each other after so many things they have been throught apart and together, conflicts that are better explained in comics and maybe we will see more about in the upcoming novels.

“The Vows” comics, where we se Katherommy’s wedding, also doesn’t show a sad Kimberly looking her ex marrying the woman he dated for years and reconnect for LOVE after so many YEARS apart and together. TomKat broke to go to university and reconnected after because they never forget each other and it’s more than t0mberly ever got (Kim broke up with him by a letter after 1 year apart, if it isn’t clear enough). Things are settle, Jimberly remains as hint and unofficial, but TomKat is more than endgame and no one shipped it more than JDF and Catherine Sutherland themselves.

And NO, I don’t care about ASJ and AJJ’s beef and the fact they don’t like each other. Much less that AJJ ships t0mberly and ASJ ships Jason/Trini, opinions that are based in their close friendship with respective actors. I love the characters and that’s this post about. All respect and kudos to the actors, but I don’t have to agree with all of them.

Also t0mberly fans can enjoy AU! Universe of Olivia Oliver and Jimberly fans can enjoy AU! Universe Power Rangers (2017) and everything is ok, just don’t come at me to say Jimberly came from nowhere. There is a huge background and a beautiful love story if they want to tell in novels, I hope they don’t put more ex actors to involve in anything relationed to MMPR, because Tommy was always the most explored character from OG 6, after JDF’s passing I expect they set his character the way it is, let Tommy age, happily married with his family (Kat and JJ), like JDF himself WANTED and CHOSE. That’s all.

Wacky Power Rangers Cross Overs that I've Written or Could Write

Star Wars Original Trilogy:

I took a prompt from KrissyKat on Fanfiction.Net and wrote ten parts before school caught up with me. The team consisted of a much younger Han (blue), Leia (yellow), and Luke (red) (Luke and Leia were 15) and would've also included a young Ezra Bridger (green), Sabine Wren (purple), and maybe Cal Kestis (black). Rex and Ahsoka were set up to be mentors.

Star Wars Clone Wars:

This is based on a fanfiction.net fic I can't find anymore that had Obi-Wan, Anakin, Ahsoka, and Rex working as Power Rangers via Zordon's lineage. In the version I had planned Obi Wan (yellow), Anakin (red), Ahsoka (pink), Rex (blue), and Cody (orange) where the main five. But this one would've been a Dino-Fury esque season with a lot of extra characters which would've included Plo-Koon (graphite), Wolfee (slate), Fives (navy), Echo (scarlet), and a tenth character I never settled on.

There was also an idea to just make it Cody (mustard), Rex (blue), Echo (scarlet), Fives (navy), and Wolfee (slate).

The Wiggles:

based on Mighty Morphing Power Wiggles by Flakingnapstich on AO3, but more of a legacy idea. In their story the Wiggles were created as a cover for the original four - Greg (yellow), Murray (red), Jeff (purple), and Anthony (blue) to be Power Rangers. As the crew has evolved, I feel like it lends itself to a multi-evolution team like the original Mighty Morphing run.

In this version the Wiggles main four were Power Rangers, and in addition to saving Australia they also operated wherever their tours were, such as the US.

The medical condition that forced Greg to retire in real life back in 2006 was actually the stress of an old injury in tangent with being a Power Ranger and performing. Sam steps up as yellow, then when Jeff and Murray leave Pryce and Lachy step in as red and purple, respectively.

Anthony is our Tommy Oliver character, as he's never left the team.

In the fic Captain Feathersword is the fifth ranger, but I kind of like the idea of having him, Dorothy, the Octopus, and the dog (whose names escape me) be like the spirit rangers of Jungle Fury.

The current iteration with the two of each Wiggle differentiates either by shades of their respective color or by suite design.

I just think it'd be cute to have a little moment with Anthony and his daughter doing a passing of the torch like how the fandom sort of passed the torch to JDF's daughter after his passing.

Bonus points if we get a khaki and olive green ranger and it's just Bindi and Robert Irwin. Super bonus points if Bindi's current husband Chandler ends up being the one running everything back at base (like Alpha in the original or Sam prior to getting the Green Samuari suite in Ninja Storm).

Top Gun

Now hear me out.

The original Ranger team is made up of some of the first Top Gun graduates, as well as other crack pilots. Viper and Duke (Maverick's dad) are two such members. Duke goes down during a fight but is never replaced as a Ranger.

Come Top Gun, Viper's manipulated everything enough to get who he wants in the running or the next Ranger team. Maverick and Goose weren't who he was expecting, but they stand out.

The Rangers work in tandem. Iceman is red, Slider is blue. Hollywood and Wolfman are yellow and green (doesn't matter which to me). Maverick is black, leaving a final color on the table. Initially, Viper holds onto it for himself, serving as a sixth white ranger before he's hurt and passes it on to Maverick's current RIO: Merlin. But as RIO's retire Mav has to keep giving it out. So when he eventually can get into a single seater, he takes the chance, and the Rangers before a five man team.

Iceman had initially wanted to assemble the next team post uranium mission, using Mav's picks, but he knows he'll die before he gets the chance. So he gives Mav the job. Maverick keeps the black morpher and gives Rooster (blue), Phoenix (red), Bob (yellow), Fanboy and Payback (white and green, undecided) morphers.

During a fight, Maverick is injured and realizes how eerily similar his situation is not Viper. So rather than try to keep fighting through it, he gives the morpher to Hangman, making him the black Ranger.

There's also a storyline where the other six uranium mission candidates (who I give the headcanon name of Daggers) get turned into evil rangers a-la the Psycho Rangers. However, once they're brought back they still have their morphers and operate as a second team. Coyote (slate) heads the team with Omaha (maroon), Halo (mustard), Fritz (navy), Harvard (steel), and Yale (forest).

Tombstone

This one just came to me.

The Earp brothers are a team of three: Virgil is blue, Wyatt is red, and Morgan is yellow.

After Morgan's death and Virgil leaving, Doc is given a choice between the yellow and blue morphers. The other two members of their party get the green and black morphers. The morpher Doc doesn't pick is given to the fifth member of the posey. I cannot remember any of their names.

Ninjago

Its very similar to the actual IP, just with Power Ranger ninja suites and their elemental powers come from their power crystals or something like in Dino Thunder. Lloyd is green, Kai is red, Jay is blue, Zane is white, Cole is black, and Nya is aqua.

During the arcs with the elemental masters their ranger identities are just various colors and shades. Tox is lime, Chamile is purple, Turner is cream, Karloff is steel, Neuro is gray, Ash is ash, Jacob is maroon, Gravis is tan, etc. Skylar moonlights as an orange ranger.

With the new Dragons Rising line, Arin and Sora are the next two rangers: Orange and Pink.

Farkas Bulkmeyer!!

HIM. The only person who has had more guest appearances than him is JDF, but this isn't counting Hyperforce, so he might actually be in more. Which really just says a lot about the devotion of the actor. But aside from how wonderful that is, I Love Love LOVE him in the comics. ESPECIALLY in the Coinless universe and during the Dome Arc in Mighty Morphin. The live action did a pretty good job of illustrating the positive changes he went through, but not nearly as well as in the comics. He's gone from annoying, to almost serious, to the most caring papa bear who will ever exist in Skull's life, to be hinted at being new support for Promethea. And that's not even getting in DEEP with his Coinless counterpart, whom I would sell my kidneys to give a happy ending for. My goal in this fandom at this point is to put him into a romantic scenario with every single one of the Mighty Morphin team at least ONCE. He is a king and I am of the mind to make sure everyone else knows it.

I fucking KNEW watching all that Power Rangers and seeing JDF before bed was gonna make me dream AND IT FUCKING DID

Anyway I had a Criminal Minds/Power Rangers crossover dream and it was wild

Right so in the dream I was like the Power Rangers' connect with the US government. So my whole job was to report on the shit they were doing.

I was married to Tommy BUT APPARENTLY there was trouble in paradise because I was having an affair with Mat Cruz from CM which like I WOULD NEVER 😭

It was such a cliche affair because I think I told Mat "you understand me more than *he* does" LIKE EXCUSE ME BITCH

Tommy who was in charge of recruiting new Rangers whenever there was an opening invited me out on a mission

I'm a paperwork bitch I don't belong on the field

So when I was telling Mat about it he joked about me barely even being able to use a gun and offered to give me training but apparently I had my own Ranger suit that was an "in case of emergencies" type situation and I showed him my morpher which was a Light Speed Rescue one which is wild I would have thought my nerd ass would have a Dino Thunder morpher but I digress

And Mat was like "since when" and I told him about a time Tommy had one made for me because I almost died in the field and that's why I usually stay at my desk job

So then he's like "then why does he want you back on the field if I were him I'd keep you in your office where you're safe" but he said it so protective 🥺

So anyway the day comes and I'm in my office prepping for this mission and Mat and Tommy show up at the same time and I'm just like "hi"

Mat is there like "by the way I have a back up team at the ready if shit goes down" and Tommy is so grateful and like I didn't think he knew about the affair (but I was wrong 😭)

And Tommy is there to brief me for the mission and after Mat leaves he goes "I like him good to know if something happens to me he'll take care of you" LIKE WHAT 😭 and I'm like "wtf are you talking about" and he just doesn't address it further and just tells me about the mission but I'm still like 😳

Mission happens and shit goes DOWN

And I am unprepared so I do call for backup because these nerds are getting their asses kicked and I lose sight of Tommy and Mat is like "wait for backup" but I'm like "I gotta find him" LIKE A DUMBASS and Mat is trying to convince me to not be fucking dumb so I turn off communications

Never have I ever said dream me was smart

I fucking morph into my suit which I can't see from first person but based on the gloves and morpher I guess I replaced Ryan as the titanium ranger which like fine whatever

I find Tommy after my dumbass gets captured and man is fighting for his life fully injured, barely conscious and I'm trying to make sure this man doesn't pass out and I'm talking to him and he's mumbling responses to me

I was asking him about moments from our relationship and basically once again I am questioning how dream me would ever cheat on him

Anyway we get captured by Mat and his backup team and at the hospital in in Tommy's room as he's recovering and Mat comes by to explain that despite the setbacks the mission was a success and he gives my shoulder a reassuring squeeze before he leaves and aftrt he leaves Tommy is like "I know"

And I'm like "know what?"

And we end up having a very serious discussion about our relationship and what's gonna happen moving forward

Long story short Tommy snd I get a divorce but we remain friends

And I guess dream me lived their best life with Mat Cruz

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Always is going to be heartbreaking for me. Seeing everyone together but no JDF... Part of me wishes it wasn't going ahead... Power Rangers isn't Power Rangers without the whole team ( I know they've figured out what to do for Trini to still be a part of the team which is nice) it just feels way too soon

To be fair Austin and Amy Jo aren't going to be in it either. Austin has his legal issues to deal with and Amy Jo turned down returning for whatever reason.

My brain is a very interesting place, so within like 24 hours of hearing about JDF’s death, I kinda started building this Power Rangers Star Wars AU. It exists mostly in my head at this point, but its Rebellion Era and inspired at various points by Rebels, Rouge One, and the original trilogy. 

The original team, meaning Trini, Jason, Zack, Kim, and Billy are a Rebel cell. I don’t know their specific backgrounds yet, but I am leaning towards Trini having the most specific knowledge of the Jedi of the group because someone in her family was Force Sensitive. I’m thinking one of them may be Mandolorian, but again I don’t know at this point. 

Alpha is a droid, I’m not sure of all the droid types in Star Wars, but definitely one that is basically humanoid in shape. Maybe he’s a modified protocol droid or something... I don’t know at this point. But he’s still Alpha, just in a Star Wars appropriate droid.

Zordon is one of the leaders of the rebellion, initially he’s just in charge of several cells, but when the Rebellion actually comes together into the form we’re more familiar with, he’s very high up in the command structure without actually being the leader (I’m being flexible about it because then it allows several other mentor figures to be in command positions from his era of Power Rangers. Later shows will take place in later parts of the Star Wars timeline... but for now I’m worrying about before the Battle of Yavin and after the Battle of Yavin through roughly Return of the Jedi).

Kat is an Imperial who defects, somewhat in the vein of Wedge Antilles and Alexsandr Kallus. I don’t know the details yet, but its very much Kim and Tommy who wind up being the reason she defects and is pulled out of wherever it is the Empire it is has her stationed.

Tommy I know is also a defector (half of why he’s able to help Kat defect is because he did so first, and thus understands some of her reservations), and I think may wind up being Mandolorian but without knowing he’s Mandolorian (I’m leaning towards he was born on Mandolore, but at some point during the Empire’s occupation he was taken and grew up without the cultural knowledge of this. Yes this is me specifically referencing the Native American’s forced cultural assimilation), so at some point when he learns he’s Mandolorian and Kim explains what the Dark Saber means to Mando’s (I don’t know if she herself is mandolorian, but she’s definitely going to be my info dump about the Dark Saber’s history), he’s going to find his brother and damn well learn about his culture and family history. 

Aisha, Adam, and Rocky are another, smaller, Rebel cell and they eventually cross paths with the other five and eventually, along with Tommy and Kat, the whole group forms a larger cell and eventually a squadron.

I know that Kat and Kim are pilots, that just makes sense to me given that at one point they functionally share a zord. They’re just better at different types of flying, and Kat is particularly good at picking apart Imperial pilots as she understands how they were trained and the nuances of Imperial ships. Not unrelated, Tommy understands Stormtrooper tactics better than any one because he went through that training and was even in command of some stormtroopers before he defected. Between him and Jason, ground troops do not stand a chance, just like between Kim and Kat the rebellion rules the skies. I’m not completely sure where everyone else fits, but I know they’re all very good at what they do and when Tanya comes on board it does not take her long at all to fit in.

Also, ain’t nobody got time for stupid ass love triangles and Tommy has two hands.

I just want at least one universe in the comics to show Tommy Kimberly as endgame.

I really don't know why the show decided to show Tommy Kat as endgame in the main universe (I love Kat, I do) but almost everyone ships Tommy with Kim.

It was like a big "F U" to the fans.

Especially after showing those two together in the 2017 movie and giving us hope

Gonna try and summarize this best I can based on talking around and just educated guesses -

a) 1995 - Amy Jo Johnson/Kimberly exits the series, leaving the show without its most popular female character and beloved romance. They want to recreate that with Kat, so they pair her up with Tommy and almost immediately show them married with a family as a way to sell that this is their new great romance. (With bonus Dear John letter to fully write off Kim as Not The One For Tommy.) HOWEVER, everyone gets mad at this, and Kim/Tomberly continues to be hugely popular, so when Amy comes back for the Turbo movie, they indulge those fans by playing up Tomberly again despite TomKat being together and supposedly married in the future.

b) fast-forward to 2018. Dino Thunder had previously established Tommy was single and kind of flirting with Elsa, with no mention of either Kim or Kat, leaving the triangle wide open. But due to MMPR nostalgia and just them being two of the most popular characters/actors in the franchise, they still capitalize on Tomberly for things like the merch, comics, games, and 2017 movie cameos. HOWEVER - the current team on the actual show wants things to stay in one fixed continuity, and the show had established that Tommy and Kat got married. There's also the bonus that Catherine Sutherland is just more available and willing to come back to the show than Amy Jo Johnson.....and she and JDF are both coming back for the 25th anniversary episode, Dimensions in Danger. So........in the end they stay with Tommy and Kat endgame. It just is what it is. And TomKat does have fans! We don't need to disregard them

It's why I also think the comics establishing an alternate universe where Tommy and Kim are endgame is a good compromise to keep both groups of fans happy. And hey, Amy's story has given us a great start!!!!!!

I made a post like 1 month ago talking about my thoughts on Jason x Kimberly ship and how I think it was literally meant to be but was cut off due to salary’s fight on BTS. It isn’t a post to hate on Jason David Frank, but it’s like an explanation about JDF x ASJ legendary rivalry. Our Vegeta VS Goku lol.

The special episode about 30 years of Power Rangers is closer than ever, so I was watching MMPR S1 and it took me to some trivia on Google.

In this link I put here (all in spanish) it was basically what I thought. According ASJ, all the six actors from MMPR cast were unhappy about their salary and the amount of hours of job they had, the six had issues with Fox and tried to do a riot about it.

It happens that Tommy would appear for a few episodes, but everybody loves a bad boy and Fox received like a plenty of letters asking for Tommy to stay. His popularity was instantaneous. So, in that time, the actors needed the six to make a difference, specially JDF, the MVP in that moment. So, fighting about it with Fox, the six actors threatened to leave the show if the payment wasn’t fair. That’s when the things got harder, Fox offered to JDF the lead role as white ranger (the white ranger would exist anyway, but an actor called Brad Hawkins had been cast and, after all this, replaced by JDF). JDF knew he was the most popular character at this point, he knew about the movie and convinced David Yost and Amy Jo Johnson to give up and stay with him.

ASJ, Thuy Trang and Walter Jones had no idea about the caracters’ popularity, like ASJ said, they hadn’t social media in 90s, they worked so hard, they didn’t even know the hit the show was. Maybe they didn’t expected that Fox actually would fire them and the other three actors would give up the fight. The fact is that ASJ told Fox mocked they about Tommy’s popularity factor and said basically they didn’t care because the viewers wanted green ranger and they would make Tommy greater. And, well, they made everything about him without doubts. His image was already saturated. And that was the factor that cut off all the team when JDF decided to leave.

It makes sense to me, I respect JDF and I understand his reasons but I understand ASJ’s reasons too. Also I know ASJ isn’t a saint and neither JDF, but we can’t deny JDF was always a little egocentric and always wanted to be linked to PR franchise in some way, like “the best ranger ever” and things like that. The comic about Tommy is an example, the independent movie he was filming too. It’s ok, it’s ok to be ambitious. I can’t say he did wrong when I don’t know his versions of the sams situation.

So I was searching an answer because my ship didn’t sail back to 90s’ and we have that much of BTS.

It honestly feels like a dream and it’s so hard to put any of this into words. Today, I want to share something really special with you.

What all started with a simple fanpage on Tumblr turned into something that really means a lot to me…

After 4 years of hosting „Julian Draxler Fans“, creating 2 fan-projects, updating a fanblog and miscellaneous Social Media pages everyday, I got the honor to travel to Paris - to watch a match at the Parc des Princes and meet Julian Draxler. He will finally get the fan present for his 23rd birthday that I made him and that over 200 fans are part of.

I was trying everything to give him the present. Failed for over one year. So many of you messaged me, asking about the present, what’s happening with it and if he will ever receive it. I never gave up trying and then I got the message of Julian himself, inviting me to Paris. I could not believe what I was reading, I was overwhelmed. So now I can tell you that he will get the present, that he will see what we all created for him.

At this point I really need to thank every single one of you for following „Julian Draxler Fans“ through all the years; for visiting my blog, liking my posts, writing comments, showing so much support for this community and making it into what it is today.

Musings of An Otaku #9- On Thomas Oliver....

Being a fan of Power Rangers since the beginning back in 1993 and watching it religiously till Power Rangers: Wild Force. Then having an on-again and off-again to pretty much now. I pretty much watched a few episodes (out of every incarnation) of the Disney-era, got bored or disgusted by the looks of how they approached it and stopped watching. Had hopes when Saban purchased the rights back from the mouse but found myself once again, doing the same thing. Watch a few episodes out of the current series, get bored or disgusted by once again how they approached the series and stopped. Saban passes the torch to Hasbro and I have not picked up watching a single episode at all. Even going back and watching all the Disney seasons to see if my opinions have changed and tried not to compare them so-much to the original source material. However, this is not what this muse is about. It’s a season by season breakdown. Or an American comparison to the original Sentai. No. 

There’s one Ranger in particular that every single person seems to be fascinated with. Someone that everyone seems to worship the ground that he walks on. He’s somehow the most powerful Ranger that has ever walked upon planet Earth. Everything seems to revolve around him. And it’s not just the fanbase. Lately, it seems like Hasbro can’t get off of Tommy’s dick either. Every piece of nostalgia has to be Tommy, Tommy, Tommy, Tommy. There are a Shit ton of other Rangers out there that deserve the same treatment. He is not an omniscient God 

Now, okay….before I go any further, I am not in any way shape or form dissing Jason David Frank. I love the guy! No, no, no, this is about the character that he portrayed. Unlike some people, I see both JDF and Tommy as two different individuals. Two different people. Like both could reside besides each other in the real world. 

 This is just about Tommy. And NOT the Tommy from the Boom Studios comic series. Cause...oh my god...yes, he is one powerful son of a bitch. No. No. This is just about the television series, Tommy! No alternate universes being thrown in. 

Let’s step back in time for a minute. When Tommy was first introduced into the series and became the evil Green Ranger- I enjoyed the character. I loved the struggle he faced between being good or being evil. Yes, while under Rita’s spell he was pretty powerful but one has to wonder if he wasn’t her power that was enhancing his power and abilities. Any Ranger with the help of an evil witches power can become a pretty strong opponent. 

The entire evil Green Ranger saga ends and Tommy joins the side of good (obviously…). Tommy didn’t single handedly defeat Rita in the end because she was banished to the depths of space in another dumpster by Lord Zedd. Moving into season two, obviously we have Lord Zedd taking over and the entire Green Candle saga starting. When he loses the Green Ranger power, it’s understandable. Things do not last forever. Power can’t last forever. Sad to see him leave the Ranger team but I wasn’t devastated. Yes, it was a complete shocker to see the White Ranger power being created. Awesome, new Ranger, new Power. HOWEVER, I knew Tommy wasn’t up and done completely being a Ranger. I had a slight feeling he was going to come back for that. His story as the Green Ranger may have been finished, but this new chapter was just starting. 

What I did not like though, was when the Power Transfer took place and he just pushed his way into the leader position. He did not even give Rocky a chance. In Ranger-lore the Red Ranger is typically the leader (no matter what character type they possess). Yeah, Rocky may seem a little aloof (and he’s completely different from Jason), but he still should have been given a chance to prove himself in the position. Was it alright for Tommy to just push him aside without allowing that chance? Why was everyone else so chill with this decision? It was kinda a dick move there, Thomas. 

Zeo comes trotting along and almost all the storylines are still focused around Tommy. Granted, yes..he’s finally the Red Ranger. In my eyes, he finally has the mantle to be leader of the group. But still, why was he singled out. I thought the Rangers implored teamwork. I thought to fight evil, they had to fight together- all of them- together. Not this, “Oh! If we just attack Tommy- the others do not matter.” Poor Adam and Rocky were just kinda pushed towards the back burner in this season. And I won’t even get into the strange relationship that seemed to be going on between them. It’s not like Tommy single handedly beat Rita and Zedd. They hightailed it out of dodge when the Machine Empire showed up on their doorstep. Not like he single handedly defeated the Machine Empire either. Shit, the Zeo Rangers did not even destroy the Machine Empire. Zedd and Rita came back to give them their just deserts. 

Shifting into Turbo, we see Thomas once again being given the mantle of Red Ranger. Shocker. By now the Rangers are getting ready to graduate (except you, Justin…). This is obviously foreshadowing things to come and another power transfer. Also noted here is where Tommy mentions that when he graduates, he mentions something about becoming a racecar driver or something to that line. If that is the case, then why the hell did years later he show up with a fucking PHD in Paleontology. I would still LOVE to see the look on Billy’s face for that one! He was the science nerd. IMHO, he should have been the one in that role. But nooooo...his character had to be sent off to an all water planet to never be heard from again. In my eye’s the character of Tommy will never be related in any way shape or form to Science. I honestly saw him opening up a dojo of his own (whether it be on the other side of Angel Grove or some other town). When I think of “Tommy” my mind connects that to martial arts and fitness. In a way, he could have been a mentor to a young team of Rangers (a team that revolved around martial arts and not Dinosaurs). 

But seriously, I digress. Where within the television tropes did he become this all power being that all of fandom and marketdom has to worship?!  Many other Rangers have shown time and again that they have faced similar situations (that he had gone through) and prevailed. What makes him so special? I mean seriously, cut me some slack! ANDROS FUCKING SACRIFICED ZORDON’S LIFE TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE!!!!!!!!!!!! He did not want to swing that Drill Saber and end Zordon's life, but he still did. He may not have been the best leader. He was kind of a pissy asshole (but I loved him anyways and still do). But this isn’t about Andros. Why is all the attention drawn to this one single character though? Not everyone can relate to Tommy, so why is so much emphasis in Ranger history based around him? 

Tommy Oliver is an overrated individual and as the series went on, I became more and more distant away from him. As a character, I only enjoy him in the very early Green Ranger days. I tolerate him from then on. As a leader, yes, I liked Jason. I liked Rocky for his goofy side and he should have been given a chance to prove himself as a leader. In the alternate universe of the comic book series- I absolutely love Tommy. Lord Drakkon, Shattered Grid, pure evil, pure insanity, pure mayhem. Yes! Jason David Frank- is an amazing person, a great actor, he did a good job portraying a character that I love to hate.
