My three nickels would be Conan Oā€™Brien, John Oliver, and Seth Meyers
If I had a nickel for every time I was attracted to a late night talk show hostā€¦ā€¦.i would have 3 nickelsā€¦which isnā€™t a lot, but itā€™s weird that itā€™s happened thrice

Conan talking about kissing Patrick Stewart and Ryan Reynolds like he's the bell of the ball is so great, and how obviously uncomfortable he is with physicality becoming manifest as he recounts that Ryan Reynolds played with his ear when they made out šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜
that's insane commitment from Ryan Reynolds and it's so funny how conflicted Conan feels about it years later LMAO god as a gay guy i adore homiesexual shit it's so funny every time
especially how Conan accurately mimes exactly how Ryan played with his ear despite the fact that he is very clear about the fact he never watches his own work-- that means that it is engrained in his memory šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

Conan's started travelling again!! šŸ§” I'm so happy šŸ§”šŸ§”
The world somehow seems more exciting now, with the prospect of Conan feet walking along new lands. Even if it is a very long shot that he'll ever visit central Florida. ;.; I won't give up hope though!

spent my whole life self-conscious about having niche, esoteric interests that nobody else in my peer group could relate to. It was othering and isolating.
means a lot to me, in a sentimental and vulnerable way, to see Conan O'Brien go big viral while eating hot wings. I used to record Conan and watch episodes back to back. Conan was like my church. He was smart and weird. He didn't mind debasing himself or being the butt of the joke (because he is in on it even if other people don't always realize); his persona involves a unique flavor of subversive confidence that I found instructive.
A lot of confidence and personality is about feedback loops. Unfortunately, too many people never get the feedback they need to properly develop, whether that's due to nature, nurture, environment, etc. Using humor as a maladaptation to hack this process is nothing new, but Conan's persona is unique even among the very best in that he is the butt of the joke and simultaneously it's okay if you don't get it, totally fine, in fact that's even better. This is like drawing blood from a stone. It doesn't make sense, shouldn't work, and yet it does.
That's a big contrast from traditional comedian types who desperately need you to get the joke to laugh with them and performance art types like Sacha Baron Cohen, Colbert Report Era Stephen, or Nathan Fielder, among whom it's better if you don't get the joke because that means the joke is on you and even funnier.
Whether it's Pierre Bernard, Jordan Schlansky, or Conan himself, a recurrent theme of his show was letting your freak flag fly, putting on a spectacle to make fun of yourself, then miraculously deriving confidence from the process. I'm moved by Conan smearing hot sauce all over his face while laughing manically on a multimillion-view video. makes me feel validated even though Conan already taught me it's fine if nobody really gets you.

A Visit To The Last DVD Store While packing for a trip to Auckland, I saw that one of the latest episodes of Conan Needs a Friend podcast was with a caller working in ā€˜The Last DVD Storeā€™.
Tumblr media
The aforementioned store is Alice in Videoland and it's based in Christchurch, where I was staying with relatives for a month. So I HAD TO give it a listen and, eventually, a visit. Luckily, I had friends in town who were down to accompany me on this admittedly geeky excursion.
Didnā€™t meet the caller, James, but we did get to talk to one of his co-workers who told us that weā€”at least to his knowledgeā€”are the first people to visit the store because of the podcast. He also had interesting news to shareā€¦
Tumblr media
Conan recently dropped by himself as part of his HBO travel show, Conan Must Go. Thatā€™s James with him on a framed photo that sits proudly on the storeā€™s wall. Itā€™s for the second season, which hasnā€™t aired yetā€”so I guess thatā€™s a spoiler?

Team Coco connection aside, as a film geek who grew up in the era of video rentals, but had no access to a shop with a selection this massive, I was truly in a wonderland. I could have spent my entire day there.
Tumblr media
I mean, this is just a small section of the store but it already offers an array of standout films: The Holdovers, Anatomy of a Fall, Perfect Days, Civil War, Barbie, Past Lives, Furiosa, Challengers, Pearl, May December, Decision to Leave, TƔr, Monkey Man, Dune, Monster, and The Banshees of Inisherin.
Tumblr media
The international section was also impressive. Scanned it for Daniel BrĆ¼hl films and was not disappointed.
Tumblr media
It also has an accompanying theatre. I didn't get to watch a movie there, but I did catch the 70th anniversary screening of Seven Samurai in LumiĆØre Cinema. I've been meaning to check out the works of Akira Kurosawa for a while now and to also watch a movie in a boutique cinema so I figured - why not hit two birds with one stone? Never mind that it was 3.5 hour black and white Japanese movie from the 1950s and that I woke up at an ungodly hour that day to catch a 6AM flight back to Christchurch. They served my coffee in a ceramic mug and all the seats had a tray attachedā€”I was chuffed.

Also, not me stifling a squeal in an art gallery when I saw Goodbye, Lenin! in the Canterbury Film Society brochure... and the disappointment when I realized the month it was scheduled for had already passed.
Tumblr media
Oh well, you can't have it all. Did get to explore Hobbiton as wellā€”because New Zealandā€”but perhaps I'll save that post for a different time.
