I've been trying to pinpoint for a while why Taylor Tomlinson's After Midnight feels so nostalgic, and I think I figured it out.

Taylor Tomlinson is a blonde, round-faced woman approximately my age with a tragic family backstory that found refuge in comedy and ended up quite successful at it, and now has one of the best jobs in the field. She has a very dark humour filled with material about religious trauma and mental health in an abusive household, which reflects her real life history but also serves as a cathartic way to vent out emotions and spread mental health support.

And not to detract from Taylor's merits, she's a great comedian and she definitely deserves the spot, she's fantastic at it,

But the thing that has been nagging me for two seasons, that I couldn't verbalise, was the feeling that in a slightly better world, this would've been the spot for Jennette McCurdy.

After Midnight, the way it's structured, is basically "what if Sam kept doing iCarly by herself and it turned out good".

The types of games, the guests, the fact that fooling around is more important than the outcome of the game, the pink and purple everywhere,

That's why it feels so nostalgic. And that's why it feels so bittersweet. Because it's impossible not to remember what inspired it, what every millennial grew up with, and the harm it did to a young girl who didn't deserve the hand life dealt her.

Because this is the gift that was dangled over her head for so long. It's the false promise that could've justified at least a little bit of all the suffering, that could have made it if not worthwhile, at least paid off.

The promise that was broken for an Ariana Grande vehicle she didn't even need because her career was already booming.

In a slightly better world, with just a little bit more fairness, After Midnight would've released ten years earlier with a different title.
