"First time taking a training course online and it was great!"
tefl online pro review, submitted by Camilla. First time taking a training course online and it was great! Superb content with a fun multiple-choice quiz to complete each module before going onto the next one. I loved the support too! I had questions and they all got answered within a few minutes via the course messaging system. My tutor also took the time to give thorough feedback on my two…

If you don't mind me asking, where are you teaching English in Japan? And with what program? I'm looking to apply to programs in Japan or China after I graduate.
Wow, I have no idea when this message came. I just opened (like, 15 years into using Tumblr) the message request menu 😂
I was teaching with Interac, an ALT company for 7 years. I worked for the Hiroshima Branch. There are many more different companies now than when I first came, so there are plenty of options anywhere you’d want to live in Japan.

cultural perspective being indispensible in media consumption but looking back i find it so funny that for years and years before teaching in japan i thought it was another suspension-of-disbelief surrealist kagepro thing that haruka and takane spent all their time in a homeroom class for just the two of them and now the maximum number of kids we've ever had in my special needs class is 3
#granted i work at a really small school but having separate classes and teachers for 1-4 special needs kids is really standard in japan#i know there are specialized high schools but i think most kids go through public school no matter what#i'm no expert on the subject but i think the approach is interesting#the fact that they're willing to dedicate that much personal attention - separate homeroom classes#and other teachers teaching individualized curriculum for all subjects - is nice#i also feel like i'd be planning really different content for english class with each of my two usual students than i am for the both o the#so that's just part of my job but again. that's just part of my job#yuukei yesterday was already one of the most grounded parts of kagepro#but knowing just how normal mr. tateyama's homeroom class is in cultural context it really is just an ordinary teen love story#i think i might've felt even stronger abt that when i was 16#personal#kagepro

Accidentally had a bunch of parents and kids at my local culture festival concerned for me a few weeks ago lol
So my junior high held their culture festival and I got to order some food for the two days I was there. You write what you want and send the money in an envelope to the vice principal, and I got tickets for my menu items. I saw on the menu that they had コーンパン (literally corn bread), and my Southern US self got very hyped because I didn't even know they HAD cornbread in Japan! But they seem to have corn dishes in a lot of cuisine, so I thought it made sense. So I order corn bread.
I get my bento bag and am expecting the bread of my childhood, cornbread. Warm, fluffy, like a brownie but made of cornmeal in all its redneck and indigenous-origins glory.
My friends and fellow hoes, I did not receive cornbread. I received...Japanese cornbread.
Now on its face, I like the three components of this food. I like corn. Of course I do, I'm American, we put corn in everything. I like mayo. I love bread. But when you are a Texan, you're already missing some cultural aspects of your home like its cuisine, and you are expecting CORNBREAD, and you get this?
I spent a solid thirty seconds just blinking at this corn bun and I looked so dejected that multiple students near me asked if I was okay. I live in a first-person perspective like everyone else but I imagine my face was similar to this:

Gonna!!!!! Have my first Japanese class this Thursday!!
#you guys have no idea how long i've wanted to take a proper japanese course#i wanted it in highschool but had to take spanish bc that was all they offered.#then i wanted to take it in college but they didn't have it there either so i took french.#and!! don't get me wrong spanish and french are fun but japanese has always been a language i've been super interested in.#hiragana / katakana / kanji really lights up the artist part of my brain i think. i love how it looks.#sdfklsk that is not the reason i want to learn it. i genuinely just think the language & culture is lovely & i would like to visit japan.#tried to teach myself for years through w/e books or free apps i could find but i don't think my brain is made for self-teaching language.#esp one that is so different from english. spanish? okay fine. it's easy and i think i can generally guess how something is pronounced.#japanese?? i could maybe teach myself to read but i think i'd butcher speaking.

it’s hard if you do what i do (i’m not implying my job is hard okay) and read like any reddit thread on the subject because all you read is how your job is a waste of tax money, should be abolished, how you’re just a dancing monkey, and then if you want to learn how to use your skills to get into a new job, you just see a bunch of comments that are like “if you haven’t been getting a masters, learning coding, become fully fluent in japanese, and already have several references under your belt, you might as well kill yourself because you’ll never be as good as your peers back home”
#like man i just wanted to live in japan and teach english for a while i didn’t realize it would be a black hole on my resume #sometimes i don’t care and other times i worry. idk. sorry i only come on here to rant these days

sleepy and v fed up w this blasted reading for japanese history class tomorrow. give me 45 minutes to finish this article and i will be back to talk about kissing or something
#for the blissfully uninitiated: hello i am history student#which is a fantastic thing to be but also a significant pain in the [REDACTED] when it wants to be#the professor for this class is almost unbearably terrible which does not exactly make me WANT to do this reading#but the exam is in like 2 weeks lol#so yk. i have the hardest life of anyone on earth etc etc#god forbid i actually do the degree i asked to do lmao#also i up early this morning to drag myself to the immigration bureau for a visa amendment#which meant a decidedly unpleasant hour on the metro during rush hour :(#its bc im applying for this english TA position in spring#its literally only for 5 days and tbh i wouldn't mind doing it for free bc i am sad like that and enjoy teaching for fun#but it IS paid - and paid work is Not Allowed under my student visa#so even though i literally have not even GOT the job (applications close today) i still had to go and apply for permission to work#watch as they dont hire me lol#oh i should mention - for those who may not know i am in tokyo this year#i am british and i usually go to uni in the uk but im on a study abroad year this year#i came to japan in sept of 2023 so ive been here for coming up on 5 months and i will be going back home in august on 2024#its weird to think that im approaching the halfway point#tbh i should really just make this a separate post but whatever#coming to japan has been very strange but a good thing i think

watching one of those house hunting shows where this guy is moving to a new country.
Wanna know what his reasoning is?
To help developing country's.
Wanna know what country he picked?
Japan.
#Ya know#A country that is like#Very successful#Honestly I don't understand what Americans idea of “developed” is#He also didn't know what a peninsula is#He grew up by an ocean btw#Do American think “developed” is speak English?#And prioritizes cars over public transport#And has an education system that doesn't teach children what a peninsula is#Ughhh#Also hasn't Japan been around longer than America?#I'd consider it developed by now

Staff transfers here have been amazing so far! Mainly cuz at my JHS an awesome JTE I worked with at another school came in. And at my ES it’s mostly folks from the smaller ES that closed and a few folks that I had worked with or met prior!
Just a shame this is happening a few months before I finish JET. Gonna enjoy it while I can.
