I think next year I want to make art about the sea, and transformations. Spent the last while on-and-off fixated with the ocean and all its children, been swimming again. I have to pick one big project and work on it basically the whole year and I think I have enough to go off of on my love for the sea and also werewolves/creatures that transform to manage that

Today is the Finals day of Te Matatini, and if you’re not watching already you should really tune in! Te Matatini is a kapa haka (Māori performing arts) competition in Aotearoa that’s often called the Olympics of Kapa Haka. The performances are absolutely stunning to watch!! As an American who just learned about this event, it’s been really cool to find out more about Māori culture while admiring some absolutely breath-taking art. It’s available to stream live or watch prerecorded on TVNZ or Haka Translate, with live translations in many different languages available! Even if you miss the live finals today, to my knowledge the competition will still be available to stream for a few more days afterwards. Unfortunately those websites are only available to people in Australia or Aotearoa, but with a little bit of stubbornness and a decent VPN you can watch from anywhere. (I’ve been using the free VPN TunnelBear, with the only downside being that every now and then I run out of free data and have to make a new account.) Mata Kohore by Lorde. Her voice is enchanting in this one, and Marlon Williams' background vocals are as well. This song is absolutely gorgeous and everyone should listen to the Te Ao Marama album.
Obligatory Lord Huron answer: Drops in the Lake. The vibe in this song is outstanding and it owes a lot to Ben Schnieder's really haunting vocal performance in it. He doesn't bust out that aura all the time which is pretty cool.

Whatungarongaro te tangata toitū te whenua
As man disappears from sight, the land remains
As with many indigenous peoples across the globe- we are people of our land, our ancestors held the upmost respect to the land that nurtured them. The people/tangata will perish, the land/whenua will remain as it has always done so.
We never sought to control our lands and what fed us. In my opinion, this whakataukī is evidence of how small they viewed their power over the whenua.
Through all the land confiscation, wars, deforestation and pollution the people have tortured the natural world with - the land will always remain, to find another way to flourish again once we disappear.
The eldest of all elders, us younger generations of theirs should hold to the highest regard, to remain grateful to land our own roots grow within.

Kia ora, quick disclaimer! I'm still sort of new learning Te Reo Māori! (Teh-*r*eh-awe maah-*r*ee: the māori language) I only started my classes in term 1 and its term 2 currently. (a term is half of a semester, there are 4 terms in a nz school year) so yea! If you happen to know more than me and or spot a mistake I make when posting in or about Te Reo Māori, please correct me! Te Reo Pākehā (teh-*r*eh-awe paah-keh-haa: the English language) is my first language so I'm fluent in that :)
Also Te Reo Māori is kinda like a spinterest atm lmaoo im so excited about hearing the language being spoken and seeing it written around the country and im excited to learn!! Yayy!! Learning the language and Te Ao Māori (Māori ways/culture/traditions) helps me feel more connected to my Māori whakapapa aswell! (fuhck-ah-puh-puh: ancestors/ancestry) I am Māori, it doesn't matter if you're white or mixed. Having Māori ancestry = Māori. Period. In Māori culture we dont believe in blood quantums!!! so im what people call a "White Māori"

Fun fact: the p sound is very soft! Like the p in "poo" NOT like the p in "keep" does that make sense? another super fun fact: all kupu Māori (cooh-pooh maoh-*r*ee: māori words) end in vowel sounds and never consonants!
Māori vowel pronounciation:
a - "ahh" as in: car, star, bar, guitar, far
e - "eh" as in: lego, leg, peg, said, head
i - "ee" as in: key, bee, see, reach, scream
o - "aw" as in: saw, claw, maw, jaw, NOT as in "oh/low/so/no"!! This is the most abused vowel by English speakers!
u - "ooh" as in: poo, moo, goo, soon, lose, choose, move, room
Digraphs:
Ng - "ng" as in: song, long, pong, singer, rung NOT as in: finger, linger
Wh - "f/ph" as in: phone, food, few, far, physical, philosophy, phile. NOT as in: who, where, when, what, whether, why, while .
note: different Māori dialects sometimes pronounce this sound as a "w". eg: lots of people pronounce "whanganui" as "wanganui" (fah-*ng*ah-noo-ee/wah-*ng*ah-noo-ee) For other sounds: For "R" focus on rolling your 'r' sounds, It's a soft rolled 'r' (NOT as strongly rolled as how Spanish speakers would roll theirs).  the sound you should aim for is somewhere in between an English ‘D’ and 'L'. e.g. like the 'dd' in judder, or the 'tt' in a kiwi accent for 'butter'. You should feel your tongue tip touching near the backof the roof of your mouth. T is pronounced kinda like a sharp "d", but 't' pronunciation varies depending on which vowel appears after it. When succeeded by an ‘a’, ‘e’ or ‘o’, it’s unaspirated (softer, closer to an English 'd'). When followed by an ‘i’ or ‘u’, it is an aspirated 't' (sharper, closer to an English 't'). Hope that makes sense!!!
Tohutō vowels:
(Special vowels sounds written with tohutō (macrons) on them)
ā - exaggerate and deepen the regular māori "a" sound and make sure it stands out from the other vowels! But not too much or you'll look like a fool lmaoo X3 eg: when pronouncing the sound, open your throat and lower the back of your tongue. And say "ah". It should sound different to normally saying "ah". another example is that "tohutō" is pronounced "toh-who-taww" not "toh-who-toh" !!

Pronouncing "Aotearoa" (plus some interesting notes on Maori pronunciation)
Was asked for a lil guide on pronouncing this so thought I'd chip in.
Usually, we start learning meaning and pronunciation in Maori by breaking down the word or name into its roots. In this case:
Aotearoa -> Ao-tea-Roa
Ao means cloud, tea means white or fair, and Roa means long. So we get the meaning of the name- Long white cloud. Some say this name came from Kupe finding the land by following such a cloud, others say his wife named the new country because it looked like a long white cloud.
But how do I say it?
Great question! A few simple maori notes first:
Our vowels in Maori are a lot like English. But we pronounce them differently.
A as in "ah-choo!"
E as in "egg"
I as in the ee in "eel"
O as in "oar"
and U as in the oo in "poo".
As for consonants, we have far fewer. Only H,K,M,N,P,R,T,W,Ng and Wh. (Wh makes an f sound and Ng is as in bang. They are considered their own letters.)
R is always rolled, with no exceptions (this is usually hard for English speakers to do at first)
When you do the maori alphabet, you just pronounce the letters as they're said. So for "wh" I would just make the "ff" Sound.
Lastly, we have some interesting rules for T.
In English, you use a "sharp T". You're hissing, almost, on it, by putting your tongue through your teeth. In maori, you only use a "sharp T" for ti- and tu- sounds. For others, you "deaden" your tongue by letting it hit against the roof of your mouth instead of between your teeth, so the T comes out a little like a d. So we would almost sound like we're saying "Da, De, Ti, Do, Tu".
But! Back on topic-
When we break the name into syllables and use our pronunciation tools, it's fairly easy to figure out.
Ao-te-a-ro-a.
Ao as in "l-OU-d".
Te as in "TE-d" (remember, "dead" t)
A as in " AH-choo"
Ro as in "RA-w" (remember, rolled R)
A (same as before)
Aotearoa = Ou-te-ah-raw-ah

Hello, World! It's official - Robbie has a tumblr now. Absolutely unfathomable. Honestly, it's mostly because it was this or Wordpress (or a more obscure indie dev forum) and this seemed the most accessible and quirky. I'm sure this won't lead to another awful endless scrolling habit. Any advice for the visual side of things is warmly received! I want this blog to be a fun part of the week, because a lot of fun will be had developing RoB. Just realised that acronym happens to be my name. Could be worse.
Okay! Now that the initial ramble into the void is out of the way, it's time to get into the c o n c e p t.
This tumblr is a devlog for my NZ ecosystem simulator currently titled "rule of birds", which I will be working on for the next 8 weeks as part of Blackbird Foundation's "Protostars" program. This means a weekly check-in with the other creatives in the program, the organizers at Blackbird, and a post for all of you here.
I'm breaking this week's post into 3 sections just to cover the bases;

So here's the intro post, where I ramble about myself for a sec.

So! basically, I specialize in spatial design, I love working with anything nature-related, and I want to make a video game.
Lately I've been on a tangent based around art in NZ's cultural context - the design principles behind whakairo (Maori woodcarving) and how their composition conveys meaning, how histories of spirituality, tribal and colonial relations affected design, and my own art interpreting my natural surroundings with photography and charcoal drawing. I can neither confirm nor deny whether there will be an art zine compiling a wee bit of this work on the community table at the Whanganui Zinefest this Saturday.
That tangent branched off into a focus on natural history that's the keystone of rule of birds. My motivation for focusing on an ecosystem simulator is to articulate a basis for the sort of games I want to come out of Aotearoa. The sim will be the proof of concept - and I suppose this blog will be the manifesto.
I feel like there's a massive demand for games exploring NZ history - like, imagine a big-budget maori-led release set in pre-colonial time, with all the unique aspects of survival, resource management and day to day activity that involved - or an assassin's creed type action game based during the time of Te Kooti. It goes unsaid that Kupe is one of the best parts of Sid Meier's Civilization VI - iykyk.

What I think separates a good game from a great one is how alive the virtual world feels - rather than being led through an a-to-b progression of events presented in the same visual style I've seen countless times before, if the world can react in a dynamic way, and the details in the background are crafted to feel organic and immersive, I'm going to want to stop and wander off the beaten track that an objective marker may be pointing me towards.
The last game that caught my attention in this way - and coincidentally the one that made me want to put my coding knowledge to the test with gamedev - was, of course, Rain World. To everyone who knows me, I'm sure you're surprised I've made it three paragraphs without bringing this game up. I'm not going to go into too much detail here, because there is *a lot*, but key points are you are one creature among many scavenging for food in a brutal biomechanical ecosystem, hibernating between cycles of cataclysmic rain, and the game plays like basically nothing else due to how the coded behaviour of every entity in the world follows its own logic that has much more to do with its own survival than the experience of you as a player.
Here's a nice little illustration of the physics behind a movement-sensing tentacle monster, to give a sort of discrete example - but the creatures that act according to behavioural karma systems and the dynamics of how the different lizards scuffle and coordinate with each other is worth looking into too, if this is your thing.

ARE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE: I guess, my English name comes from the band Cold Chisel (rock band from Australia)
LAST TIME YOU CRIED: I think the last time I actually set some time to freely cry was last month...... such a good stress reliever. Nothing like crying in the shower 😗
WHAT SPORTS DO YOU PLAY/ HAVE YOU PLAYED: never did extracurriculars growing up because of money 🥲💔 I have a yoga mat and sometimes do yoga at work hahahahaha. And the odd zumba video at work
THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE: I used to really like looking at people's eyes. For a while it was people's smiles, and for non physical I like to hear if they're monotone when they speak or not hahaha (cos in NZ pretty much anyone with a kiwi accent is monotonous 🙂)
SCARY MOVIES OR HAPPY ENDINGS: Happy endings. Does Cam (2018) count as a scary movie I was scared shitless. I'm all about happy endings hahaha
ANY SPECIAL TALENTS: hmmmm for work I can do mat times (all students on the mat and doing activities and listening) for over an hour.... also when I was younger I used to be very good at detangling necklaces I'd always untangle my mother's necklaces

HOBBIES: reading, watching films/shows, walking, lingering in the library, going to art shows, listening to music. hobbies i havent had time to revisit are flower pressing, journalling, cross stitching

The paper was called Hokioi o Nui-Tireni, e rere atuna (The War-Bird of New Zealand in Flight to You) and is digitised on PapersPast (in teo reo Māori, as it was printed). There's more history (in te reo and English) there too:
In 1857 two Waikato chiefs, Wiremu Toetoe Tumohe of Rangiaowhia and Te Hemara Te Rerehau Paraone of Ngati Maniapoto, went to Austria on board the frigate Novara. From their account published in Te Ao Hou (October 1958: 42-43) it appears likely that they went to Vienna with the express purpose of learning the art of printing. The Emperor of Austria presented them with a ‘printing press and types’ (ibid. ) which they brought back to Mangere, New Zealand, where Potatau, the first Maori King, resided. The press was used to print the Maori King's proclamations. The very first documents were single-paged letters by Tamati Ngapora and Te Hira Te Kawau notifying people of the deaths of Kahukoti and Wi Koihoho. Tamati Ngapora's letter was published on 2 September 1861 and Te Hira Te Kawau's on 21 September 1861. They both bear the imprint, ‘Mangere. I taia tenei ki te Hokioi o Nui Tireni’ (This was printed at Mangere at Te Hokioi of New Zealand). When the Maori King shifted to Ngaruawahia the press went too, and in 1862 the four page-long newspaper Te Hokioi was published. Te Hokioi was a spirit bird of ancient times. It was never seen but its cry was known as an omen of war or disaster.
and a shoutout to the two Māori men who travelled to Vienna in 1859, got themselves apprenticed as printers (and incidentally became accomplished ballroom dancers), and finally had an audience with Franz Josef where they charmed him so much that he sent a printing press to New Zealand….which was promptly used from 1861 to print the newspaper of the Kingitanga anti-colonial movement.
