Random mdzs headcanons that I don't think interfere with canon:

Though sufficient cultivation cures this, lwj is short sighted. (this is because of that mxtx interview but if he actually was short sighted he would be wearing glasses in canon.) Similarly, so would lxc and lqr is already halfway there lol.

Wen chao is barely older than the main cast. Like a couple years at most. This is is because it took until his poor wife (who shall forever be unknown, rip) being mentioned for me to go 'that's an ADULT?!'. Everything from the voice to the face to the short sighted immaturity and the lying to adults in charge, there's no way this guy is anything over 20.

Lqr isn't a very strong cultivator for all his technical skill is impeccable. I think this because I thought he was young grandparent age when he's the uncle!! It's too much stress! Major props.

He's also aromantic! We know that nothing will stop a lan in love, much to their detriment, but not only does lqr seem to regard the lot of them as idiots for finding the absolute worst choices ever but I feel if he'd also loved and lost it would have been... Relevant.

Jfm was gay, and his unrequited love was wcz. Alternate sexualities (and queerness as a whole) is one of those things that's still so dangerous in many countries, and I guess ancient fantasy China is one of them! Poor mxy. Anyway that plus arranged marriages plus jfm being an only child (to my knowledge) and needing heirs... Yeah I feel like that's one of those things that happens. It's common all throughout history, forcing people into het relationships for any number of reasons or risk social (or even physical) death. I could so easily trace how that would have affected him through the courtship, marriage, his parents, him genuinely trying to love yzy and maybe deep inside knowing it was doomed to fail, her intelligence picking up on that and trying to figure out how she was unworthy, her feeling hurt and disrespected, getting more and more paranoid and sensitive as it wears on, her being so close to the right answer but correcting her would expose him. Him just trying to settle for mutual respect and teamwork and her never getting what she needs to be fulfilled in life, what she was raised and trained all her life in preparation for. The way he's so unwilling to force his kids to do anything miserable and the way he's so quick to call off the engagement when all he's hearing is disinterest and incompatibility. I could make this a whole post on its own but I fully believe this man lived and died like so many other queer people have in the past - never being able to find out who he truly was, and that he wasn't broken for not being the way he needed to be. Wangxian have an easier time of it, but when there's stories like mxy? People keep their heads down. He raised jc the way he was raised, and he turned out fine. It wasn't their fault he was such a failure of a son.

To cheer things up, I firmly believe that wwx is bisexual af. Just because lwj is his soulmate doesn't mean he's not. Are you an mxtx protag if you're simply, straightforwardly gay? I think not.

Though I do wonder if jc being Banned From Women was 100% an entirely whoopsie daisy accident. Sometimes standards are supposed to be impossible... Now I think about it, the certainty lwj hated wwx, the total lack of any partner, the focus on jl, the constant frustration with wwx's flirting and incomprehension with jyl crushing on jzx... I think the women are the only straight ones in the family, cuz he's sounding the aroace bell! Good for him tbh!!! Break the cycle!!!!

Lsh is the child of either wrh, wc, jgs, or two perfectly lovely normal people who died in war/childbirth. He was 100% a village kid, so thank goodness they all stepped up. I feel like one of the wens would have told wwx his parentage either way, so if he hasn't told anyone else I can't imagine it's great.

Each sect is associated with an element. The wens of course were fire, the nie earth, the lan air, the jin water (koi/carp tower), and the jiang are lightning (given we assume yzy and the jiang territory are compatible (her husband is probably water lol oof)). Years of specialised clan training and select marriages have caused the clan members qi to take on movement (at minimum) matching the respective elements. This is based on the anime, where everyone has nice handy colour coded qi, but the twin jades have the prettiest cloud texture that perfectly matches their crest and wwx has an almost lightning spiky red with just enough smoulder to make he sure he's a fire type. This also!!! Matches their fighting styles, have you noticed?? Idk if they did it on purpose or not but it's so cool!!! Wwx and jc are constantly moving, redirection, bounce and flip around; lwj and lxc are very twirly, lots of attacks from above, lwj often lets his sword fly mid battle, and of course the music! And the nie are very... Brick wall lol. I'd say NHS is air? Maybe? Water?

This one's a bit silly, but I like to imagine csr and bsr are mother and daughter from a distant land where people use their surnames last (gasp) and it wasn't really important to bsr cuz secluded mountain but they did figure it was going to be a problem a touch late. 'oh but phoenix they have different spellings in Chinese' csr got asked 'oh so like the immortal?' panicked and changed it on the spot. Her husband's nicknames all use her 'surname', he's the only one who knows about the mix up.

Spinning in the air helps you change an attack or helps you float. Yes this is based entirely on the anime (donghua?) where even the most serious of characters (lwj) do three full rotations before landing a big attack midair. It might be so he has time to get his guqin out lmao.

Jc is left handed, I'm pretty sure that's anime canon at least. Any good swordsman (or dual sword whip wielder!) can do a little ambidexterousness tho.

Wwx can do decent guqin cuz he's the gentleman prodigy of the arts but he probably whittled a dozen dizi out of roadside bamboo on long journeys to entertain himself which is why chengching was such a fine tuned spiritual tool.

The jiangs were a great sect lead by good people in an ehhhh family. Individually they're all actually decent people but they bring out the worst in each other even as it keeps them all in check.

I firmly believe that yzy was holding back a LOT when made to whip wwx in front of the wen wench. That's a whole entire spiritual weapon and she was going at it wildly in a barely stable environment. Compare that to lwj who took the discipline whip not too many more times (if any) and was rendered bed bound if not house bound for years recovering (and grieving) and over a decade later is still a mass of scar tissue. And that was an orderly and structured punishment using materials designed to NOT kill the victim, not a whole entire LIGHTNING MURDER WEAPON. Wwx was back on his feet minutes later sword fighting, rowing, carrying jc on his back... Lwj is the more realistic result, real whips can be lethal, and very, very dangerous. They are excruciatingly painful and if you make a mistake they can easily flay skin and muscle to crack bone. You're not supposed to strike the same patch of skin twice. Yeah wwx and his stupid pain tolerance but I truly believe him and yzy were in full accord in that moment with the roles they had to play (and jc hated every second). She could at least have apologised... in the middle of heated battle for her home and life though....

Lwjs eyes are gold and sunset and stars' YES ALSO BUT I looked at them and my immediate reaction was 'that's a bird of prey'. They're LITERALLY falcon eyes, they're identical, and I've never once seen that comparison :(. He's already piercing/intense/pinning/scouring, (and his anime eyeliner and dark lashes look like the markings) he's so perfect for the metaphor. Make it that wwx is the rabbit prey, come on.

Why is wwx sun coded but moon aesthetic and lwj moon coded but sun aesthetic like how's that fair why does it always happen.

Stop blaming wwx for Suiban he admits he came up with a zillion good names and it was jfm who didn't pick any and named it as a joke. Ngl if that was my trusted person who went and did that I would have been gutted but hey wwx thrives. I do feel like jfm naming the sword that wwx sacrifices to save jc is grounds for some angst at the very least.

Lxc was definitely in some situation with the other two because he does read as a parallel to lwj. Their romantic lives are basically inversions of each other, you could hold a graph up to a mirror. It's just that lwj was so deeply lucky to get wwx back, and he fell in love with someone true to himself. Lxc just got used and left with the ashes, no matter how much true love was on either side. Wwx chose family, kindness and community with poverty and jgy chose greed and power and wealth for total isolation. It was NHS that inverted their fates, but either brother's love could only come at the cost of the other. Poor qiren...

All those fancy huge ribbons in everyone's hair (again it's the anime donghua) are special and ridiculously sturdy ribbons given by the parents they wear in varying styles to tie it all up and as they grow up so they don't trip on it. This is a silly headcanon but I love it cuz those ribbons are stupid long and literally everyone has it. Maybe it's the mdzs equivalent of the guan ceremony?

Wwx has for sure done cannibalism.

Ooh painful headcanon time - his parents died in yiling right? And all corpses get tossed into the mounds for centuries, right? Nonzero chance wwx's parents bodies broke his fall.

Lwj gets wwx a mule for a birthday/festival cuz those guys are basically the perfect mounts humans are ever going to get, they're just v rare and infertile. They're smart and brave as donkeys and fast and strong like the horse, resulting in an animal that is down for mounted parkour with the right training. And then lwj can ride a horse alongside wwx when they go travelling ^^. Idk I just think it'd be super cute.

Wwx only comes up with good names when he's doing real bad. Names when he's doing good: Suiban, li'l apple, rulan (after his bf). Names when he's doing bad: chengqing, yin iron tally/stygian tiger amulet, compass of evil.

I love madam yu and I love that she’s horrible and that she’s venting her anger and letting everyone around know her opinion. she walks in, wrecks shit like a massive bitch she is, no fucks given, and then leaves. she will let nobody shut her up.

and women are expected to just sit in silence and not have feelings and be nice and appease the situations but madam yu will stir shit up, she won’t bottle up her rage and just lets it fucking spill out no matter who gets hurt she’s hurt too and she’s mean and doesn’t care and won’t let anyone “put her into her place” because she’s the boss here too and I get so much kick of watching her just go absolutely apeshit

and yes she’s absolutely terrible and I also feel so bad for the yunmeng sibs that they have to go through this. but at the same time it’s so fucking liberating to just watch this hurricane of a woman go and I can handle those two contradicting emotions just fine.

here some of the jc and yzy stans opinions that I'd never be able to comprehend : 

 she wanted to marry him(jiangfengmian), even though she knew that he loved WXW’s mother. That love must be so strong. Strong enough for her to still care and accept WXW. (Yeah accepting him by abusing him and whipping him. wow just wow).

 LOVE how she's not worried about the fate of the clan after she beats down Wen's lady. I feel like its so rare to see a female character NOT THINK. She just for it and she's not scared at all HDJDNFKFJ . (What the fuck I feel like some 8years old wrote this because It does not have a meaning at all.)

how unfairly she treated WWX but he was a troublemaker tbh, maybe she just hates troublemakers LOL.

 how physically abusive she truly was gets seriously exaggerated sometimes. I never really saw any hint that Wei Wuxian received more than the usual level of physical discipline common for disciples. To put it bluntly, he was a troublemaker, a fact that he even acknowledges himself, and the same would have happened to him in any other sect too. (any sect will be happy to have a troublemaker like him because he is genius, a natural born leader, a capable person who shows great durability and adaptability and the list goes on ).

Another episode in the animation also had Wen Qing treat WWX's injuries from the zidian but she says, it seems like Madam Yu doesn't hate you as much as rumours had it.(bruh that scene is not from the novel ).

She's a victim too. Thrown into a loveless marriage and constantly bombarded with rumors. ( the fuck half of them did not even read the novel ).

The screen time given to her wasn’t enough to reveal what she kind of person she really is underneath her tough exterior.( Kind person ? BRUH.)

They grew up as brothers, they both sacrificed themselves for each other, so there’s some element of love and care for each other. On the other hand, JC struggled with always being compared to WWX by the cultivation community and his family. Then he thinks WWX killed and did lots of wrong things. It would be hard to not resent WWX after all that, and there’s definitely some complex emotions between the two of them.(  he always wanted to find someone to put all the blame and sadness on. He said that himself.)

if you hate someone. Even during the period he was apparently hurting demonic cultivators, that desperation is born from love, need and longing, not hate.(seriously the fuck is this.hhhhh.)

I’m sympathetic to YZY, because she’s in a loveless marriage and her son who is extremely similar to her -personality wise- is ignored by her husband.

JFM favouring his adopted older brother over his own son leads to Yu Ziyuan disliking WWX and putting even greater pressure on JC.(first of all wwx is not adopted to the jiang family . second of all yu ziyuan hated wwx the moment jfm brought him not to mention she hated his mother for no reason . and third even before wwx arrieved she told jc that his father hates him . what kind of mother is she ?)

A lot of characters were homophobic in the novel and JC was singled out for no reason. In his heart he always has/has wanted to support Wei Wuxian, he just does not know how to express this.

okay so i had the thought: what would my non-yrz ocs be doing in the mdzs universe? and then the idea just kinda ate my brain for a while. 

Hana - youngest child of wen ruohan, the only daughter, and the heir. she’s wrh’s pride and joy, the child everyone has to measure up to. she surpassed wen xu by age ten. wen chao wasn’t even an afterthought.  she’s as stupidly competent at cultivation as she is at everything else. ambivalent to her family and sect, doesn’t even care enough to hate them. super fucking detached, because she didn’t even have kise to ground her in this life. instead, she has i  wzl. even though she doesn’t need protection, she’s still the heir, the future of the wen. wzl is hana’s only human connection among the wens. yikes. stabs wrh to death when he starts going evil overlord. feels nothing about it -- she just thought a war would be annoying. wzl says nothing, because -- what can he say? she’s the sect leader now. almost certainly ends up with wen qing, as the only one who’s not high keyed terrified of her. low key terrified, sure! hana will take what she can get. (then time passes and -- it’s hard to be terrified when you’re furious at your stupid sect leader b/c hana is just the fucking worst patient)(hana worries wen qing. it’s like she doesn’t care if she lives or dies). Name: Wen Hui (to destroy by fire, lol subtle wrh), courtesy name Ronghua (glory and splendor, also hua is the same character for flower!)(she gets a courtesy name because she’s not a Disappointment like her brothers)

Masae - he’s Jiang (possibly younger brother of Jfm??) for five minuets before he gets bored and wanders off. hailed as a divine healer. possibly a demonic cultivator? really fucking good at talismans. Ue is a cursed blade, or a spirit parasite that attached masae and got attached emotionally  masae never bothered to like. get rid of it. possibly they still eat people? maybe a venom type situation?? anyway, i know that one day masae trips over xue yang and is charmed when nine year old xue yang threatens to stab him to death in increasingly creative ways. adorable. he basically kidnaps xue yang to be his son/disciple (does xue yang end up more well adjusted or less??? i’ll leave that up to you). also very fond of meng yao when they meet, b/c of course he is.  still marries this world version of aizen perhaps??? Name: Jiang Zhen (blessing), courtesy name Baituo (to cast off (old ideas))

Oc!Kiba - Jin!!!!! Not main line, but i feel like he’d be related to jin zixun b/c kiba  can’t catch a break tbh. adjusts slightly better to being among the snakes of koi tower than the dogs of the inuzuka. he’s an orphan. a nobody. there’s like, three people who know his name among the jin.  He’s a master of anything related to going unnoticed or information gathering. by the time he’s twelve madame jin has payed him to slip impotence drugs into jin guangshan’s cup for a year straight and he never gets caught. he hears and sees pretty much everything, because he’s so low-key. has dirt on e v e r y o n e. yes, even you. blackmail is a beautiful thing. sometime in the future, he might defect? or take over the sect via puppet master strings?? honor is for suckers. very nervous and quiet as a kid, but grows into the living version of that one song line ‘if your boyfriend says he’s got beef, tell him i’m a vegitarian and i ain’t fucking scared of him’ real quick.  it takes meng yao three full years to even notice that kiba is not what he seems. probably assassinates jqs and doesn’t feel bad about it.(you know what? yrz would kill to have kiba’s super power of invisibility. the world is so unfair) Name: Jin Wu (fog/mist/vapor), courtesy name Yinmo (to vanish gradually/ to disappear/ to fade out). (doesn’t get the zi character b/c he’s not mainline jin)

Jeong - tbh, i had a tough time with this one. I think they probably started off with Baoshan Sanren, but came down the mountain, and joined the Nie after a rough few years among the common people. the Nie creed of facing evil and protecting the innocent would appeal to them the most. They joined the sect a few years before Papa Nie qi deviated. when he did deviate, they killed him so nmj wouldn’t have too. nmj is grateful, but it also takes him years to fully forgive them. in ‘penance’ jeong became nhs’s personal guard because they had previous experience body guarding (the whole king killer thing still, uh. it happened). also it takes a burden off nmj’s shoulders to know that one of the most powerful people in the sect is watching over his little brother. (there may have been a few attempts on nhs’s life before this by the wen).  nhs is thrilled by this, b/c jeong is notoriously easy going when they’re not in training mode, and all children naturally love jeong. really fucking sturdy, even for a cultivator. might actually be immortal by this point. not quite human? might’ve known cangse sanren, depending how long they were on the mountain. Name: Chénfú (ebb and flow, or rise and fall, or sinking and floating) Sanren (b/c if wwx’s mom can use the name so can jeong).(nhs and all the nie kids call them Renren lol).

i just read through all of the rp verse in one morning, and i’m really enjoying it! i was wondering (although i’m not sure if you’ll have an answer to this lol but) what’s qingheng-jun’s deal in that au? just like. his standard emotionally distant father thing? is he still in (whatever the non-cultivation equivalent of) seclusion? how and when did jfm save his life?

this is exactly the sort of questions i need to help me procrastinate! i’ve been thinking about this since i saw this ask in the morning because work is ugh, and this is so much funner to think about, so here, have some headcanons that are not relevant to the main rp verse at all: 

qingheng-jun doesn’t appear in the main rp verse, but he’s still technically the emperor. everyone knows the country is run by the council of elders that qingheng-jun appointed before he went into a self-imposed seclusion, though.

speaking of seclusion. qingheng-jun decides some years after the empress (mama lan) passes away that life on the throne has no meaning, and that he needs to go into seclusion to find peace, yada yada yada. the works, y’know.

before he goes into seclusion, he appoints the council of elders to take care of the country, because he fought really hard to get here, and by god, he will keep it safe until one of his sons is ready to take over as emperor. 

qingheng-jun also decides that he should repay jiang fengmian’s life debt before he essentially cuts off all ties with the world, and decides that a marriage between the families would be the best way forward. his sons are still young, and an alliance with jfm will mean that his sons will have the army on their side, and prevent any usurpation attempts. 

qingheng-jun was not in line to succeed the throne, and never wanted it until the woman that he loved (mama lan) was forced to marry the then emperor, and killed him on their wedding night. for her crime, she was sentenced to be beheaded by the next emperor.

(i love mama lan tbh so let’s just say that the emperor she killed was evil and Really Bad News and deserved it, and that the son who succeeded him was the same.)

qingheng-jun could not have that, so he started a rebellion with jfm and his army by his side. this is probably where jfm saves qingheng-jun’s life, and becomes qingheng-jun’s right hand man and most trusted general. 

they win, qingheng-jun becomes the emperor, and saves mama lan, but instead of letting her go so she can do whatever the hell she wants, he decides he loves her too much to let her go, and marries her and makes her the empress instead. :( mama lan is probably against it, but ends up going along with it, because qingheng-jun saved her life after all. 

mama lan is unhappy most of her life, and ends up taking her own life when she felt that it was time. 

lan huan was already starting to realise how sad she always seems, and it will be a matter of time before lan zhan is old enough to see that she is essentially a prisoner in the palace. she wants them to grow up happy, and she owes it to qingheng-jun to make sure their children don’t grow up hating him. she will do this one last favour for qingheng-jun, and then they will be even.

now wwx is telling lwj about how he used to spend a ton of time in that shrine bc m-yu would punish him by sending him there to, idk, reflect on his sins before the ancestors or smth

and lwj is like, yeah, i heard about that

then wwx comments on how he's never met a woman as irritable as m-yu, and how she punished him for trifles all the time

then he laughs bashfully and says "my fault, my fault" and bows another 3x bc omg wwx you can't speak ill of the dead, especially not at their shrine

this is a nice moment between them so far, actually. 

it's nice to hear wwx reminisce in a way that's not 100% painful

and the fact that he's sharing these little bits of inconsequential info with lwj, his soulmate, is just very sweet to me

lwj: won't you tell jc?

wwx: idk. at least not yet

lwj: after all, you two are sworn brothers

it's nice of lwj to acknowledge that, without any sort of rancor in his tone, considering how much he does not care for jc (to put it mildly)

Yeah that’s something maybe I won’t understand fully about Yu Ziyuan character as she is from a different culture and race, and sadly we all go through different things when it comes to things like this because of culture and race.

Yu Ziyuan can respectuflly step on me okay I understand this because I have to accept that she was one strong independent woman and not only that she was beautiful to boot. She did love JFM she just didin’t like him makes perfect sense, I don’t think there was never a doubt that she loved him but I think the reason that she never liked him was because he never tried to actually fight for them and lets face it he just smile and never tried anything to fix things either. There more I think about it her life was a sad one and it makes you understand her anger even more.

It’s funny that you mention Wen Qing beacause her death didn’t made sense at all, I mean I understand MXTX needed to create that conflict but couldn’t they use someone else lol. I mean the lady killed so many to create that conflict and tension but damn she went into a killing spree with her characters specially the women. Lol Talking about Wen Qing and how she could have survive I think I read a fic about how Baoshan Sanren did help Wen Qing to live but I think in that story it was more her spirit that kept on living so she was this type of ghost that you could see only thanks to BS. Talking about Boashan Sanren I never understood why she didn’t help the student that died, I know she pretty much told them you leave don’t come back but come on she was this magical being that could do so much she could have help them.

As for who I would choose, I would also chose Jiang Yanli (I mean why kill her, the siblings were already suffering as it was) I personally think she would have been a very strong -no one messes with me- type of sect leader until her son came of age and took over. Specially with everyone knowing that she had the protection of not only Jiang Cheng the sec leader of the Yunmeng but also of Wei Wuxian the Yiling Patriach no one would dare to defy her.

Now my next question: What are your thoughts about the Yi City arc and it’s characters?

Ah ah ah yanli :( I think the only person who loves wei wuxian as much as lan zhan is jiang yanli. She died still believing in him and it's so so sad that she never got to see wei wuxian happy, having a son and a husband, didnt get to see her own son grow up. Oomph the thought of Sect Leader Yanli is just 🥵 what I loved about the scene where jin zixun is being a stuck up nuisance is JYL respectfully roasting the shit out of him fjfjf like she is a cinnamon roll but she is more than capable of ending you right there with just her words. I love it!

Ahh as for your question, I adore the yi city arc it's literally like lets step away from the main story for 5 min to check out these other cultivator husbands but at the same time (in cql) the parallels between songxiao and wangxian is amazing! I love the longing lwj saw in them when he meets them the first time compared to the sadness when he finds out about their fate.

Xue Yang is without a doubt my favourite villain. He's just shameless, he's straightforward and he doesnt beat around the bush. Literally like yes I'm a psycho what about it? I can and I will murder you all :D I sympathise with him too in some areas like how his upbringing or the lack of and the way the society treated him affected him. Like mxtx focuses on the three XY, JGY and WWX and how the three orphans were affected by society but each of them handled things differently.

Xue Yang and Jiggy both value themselves over everyone while WWX thinks I owe everyone everything and kills himself dead over it. Xue Yang is open about and and Jiggy is discreet. It's such a brilliant thing! I love it way too much.

With xuexio I think xue yang himself didnt know how to handle when something good, when kindness is actually giving to hil freely and thats why in a way he tricks xiao xingchen.

Coming to SongXiao 😔😫 a tragedy. They could've been crime fighting rogue cultivator husbands :(( it's heartbreaking how they parted the way they did and when the finally met it they couldnt even clear the air. It's just one tragedy after the other with them.

Also, small Zidian tangent with a side of “JC is a good boy”, I haven’t counted the lashes but let’s say he got 10. 10 lashes is enough to have someone as strong and WWX laid out for a month. When JC hits him with Zidian in Dafan mountain to “expel the spirit” WWX gets up pretty much right after, yes it was only one lash and he’s complaining, but he’s got no core, got beaten up and fell down a hill earlier that day, so I’m assuming he’s not in the best of shapes. That, combined with the sad+defeated face JC makes when no spirit is expelled really leads me to think he absolutely thought it was his brother and pulled the hit. I might be reaching, but anything to not have to think about what’s actually happening on my screen.

Back to this fucking mess now:

I am going to shank Mme Yu at this rate ngl. Again, she keeps giving into JiaoJiao’s demands, and she seems to think they won’t keep climbing higher, is she blinded by her hate for WWX or have I missed an indicator that JiaoJiao would be satisfied with the hand?

Should I talk about WWX’s willingness to let himself be mutilated? I’m kind of reminded of Jamie Lannister (he’s a fave, again, don’t @ me) and how understandably fucked up he got after losing his dominant hand, as he says “I was that hand”. Now, we all know that isn’t true, but with WWX’s self-worth issues why wouldn’t he measure his worth by how useful he can be? He’s a hell of a fighter, and that’s what “makes him useful” in his own eyes. Oooof ooooof, ok ok, lots to unpack in those sentences. “You should look at the owner before you punish a dog” & “How dare you come here and penalise my family members before me” they’re both kind of terrible. On one hand, she’s recognising WWX as part of her family and no one is allowed to touch them, on the other hand, is in the role of someone way below her actual family, and it is very clear that, while no one else is allowed to hurt her family, she is, which is not super great tbh. So yay Mme Yu finally recognised WWX as family, not so yay she still is a terrible abusive person? Even worse because it looks like she’s come to terms with WWX being family long ago, yet she kept treating him like garbage all this time?

Ok but Jinzhu and Yinzhu are badass tho.

This might be the only instance you will read me cheer for Mme Yu but here we are I guess.

You know what would’ve made me 10000 times more sympathetic towards Mme Yu? If, after she screamed she hated WWX she would’ve hugged him too. Deal with me for a second. JC and Mme Yu are very similar aren’t they? They’re harsh, quite angry, and, although they care no one will catch them showing it. When JFM scolded JC saying to not blurt things out in anger I hoped this would be what happened with Mme Yu, she’s angry and worried, so she’d babble some bullshit at WWX. But she also knows she’s going to die, so I thought, that, as a goodbye she’d at least show him some affection as if to say “I care, but I’m also a very angry bitter woman and there is no time to put it in words, take care of each other.”

Do I still dislike her with all I have? Yes, but I can recognise she’s the only maternal figure our Yunmeng sibs have ever had and, terrible as she might be, they still love her and losing her is going to hurt a lot.

Ok ok, another sad musing for y’all. WWX told JC to stop JiaoJaio, yet he (understandably) got distracted trying to help his mum against WZL. We’ve all seen the super sad scene of these two in the tall grass and JC trying to strangle WWX screaming “it is your fault I want my parents” and yet WWX wasn’t the one stopping JiaoJiao, JC was. How many of you wanna bet JC fully believes it is his own fault the siege was successful and blaming WWX out loud is his way of projecting all the anger he has toward himself?

Even sadder musing. When Shijie gets injured, he’s holding onto her from behind, Shijie sees the man going for WWX and has time to push him away yet JC doesn’t. Once again, another person he loves is dead because he was distracted, and on cue again, he lashes out at his brother.

I am not saying that’s healthy or that the fact that he didn’t go for the killing blow in either of those instances is praiseworthy but I’m pretty sure he fully believes all his family is dead because of him, so yeah.

Back to the show now:

So I’ve got a bone to pick with JFM, yes yes, it is very sad, another parent who is walking to his death saying goodbye to his children, but look at the way he does it. He touches JC and Shijie’s faces and tells them not to cry, he then pats WWX on the shoulder and tasks him with taking care of them. I don’t know if he’s so deep down the rabbit hole that he truly thinks that, bc WWX is an orphan, his death won’t affect him the same way it’ll hurt is kids or what. But that was fucking cruel and yet again, explains soooooo much of WWX’s trauma. Neither parental figure spared a word of affection for him before dying and he can’t remember much of his parents, so it’s not like he has their heartfelt goodbyes either.

ETA: so I just noticed that JC and WWX are holding hands at the end of the episode and, I’m assuming, they’re also holding hands with Shijie. Fuck me I’m crying.

You guys my black cat, who really doesn’t like cuddling, just came up to me for a head rub, so just imagine how sad (and angry) I must be feeling. Or maybe she’s just hungry.

oo ive got lots of thoughts on those two so this is gonna be a Mess. gonna put my rants under a cut so i dont annoy anyone lmao 

i think they absolutely should reconcile post canon. they obviously still care about each other and still see each other as brothers and theres a Lot more for them to talk through now that they got the golden core thing out of the way. and the golden core switch specifically disproves jc’s idea that wwx doesnt care about him or cares about him less than the wens or lwj and from there it’d make sense that that would be the start of them working through the rest of their problems. plus i think them reconciling would be good for them to work through some of their Other issues like everyone’s deaths and the various ways the jiang parents fucked them up as kids since those are things they Both went through. 

both the jiang parents failed all three of the yunmeng siblings but you specifically asked about the brothers so im not really gonna talk about yanli much here but just Know. i love her and she deserved better. anyway. jfm’s favoritism toward wwx obviously fucked up jc by giving him his inferiority complex and tbh probably fucked up wwx as well and i Do have some thoughts on that but bad memory has kicked in so i dont remember what they were. oops. madam yu Also fucked them both up, she seems to take out her problems with jfm on the kids, also fuels jc’s inferiority complex and explicitly tells wwx she hates him and blames him exclusively for the wens taking lotus pier as her last words to him. and if i remember right they Both enforce the idea that wwx has of his value as a person coming from what he can do for others and at least one of them tells him to protect his siblings with his life. which is. not a great thing to say to your 18 year old adopted kid. these things kinda lead to the rift that forms between them later so like. yeah bad. 

i understand why jc didn’t stand up for wwx when he was in the burial mounds. things between them were already a little strained and, while he was right, wwx was going against everyone else and as a sect leader with a kinda unstable position since he is so young and had Just rebuilt the entire sect from the ground up. it makes sense that he couldn’t really say anything. i wish he had and if he had a lot of went wrong probably wouldn’t have (or at least wouldn’t have in the same way since like. demonic cultivation is unstable and wwx is a very good scapegoat, so even if things didnt go the way they did they still probably wouldn’t have gone well.)

So they keep interrogating the spirit and find out that the spirit knows nothing

They keep asking questions and determine that jin ling is in fact in the room even tho they haven’t seen him anywhere!

Look, i know he means it bc spirits can’t lie through inquiry or whatever but i LOVE the implication that people simply cannot lie in the presences of the great hanguang jun

Lwj starts guqin’ing again while wwx searches the blades shrine again

We get a shot from outside the bunker and see the robes of a ~mysterious figure~

Ooooh, and we get an absolutely GORGEOUS close up shot of lwj’s eye (lovin that eyebrow, man) as he listens to the spirit’s response

Wwx: what did you ask him?

Lwj: his age and where he’s from

Wwx: what did he say?

Lwj: 16, lanling

WORRIED UNCLE!WWX (also, i guess jl is not twelve, but whatever)

Aaaanndd we find out jin ling is inside the wall of the blades shrine!

Lwj goes and cuts the wall to pieces with bichen like a badass

And wwx immediately starts digging his little nephew out

HE’S SO WORRIED FOR HIM

He’s calling his name out and lwj goes and gives the boy some spiritual energy since he’s all unconscious from being stuck in a wall

Lol while lwj is doing that, wwx grabs bichen and starts poking it into the dirt

Seems kinda disrespectful to bichen, if you ask me...but lwj and bichen don’t seem to mind so whatever

Wwx gets all woozy from the resentful spiritual energy again

He’s starting to piece things together when jin ling suddenly wakes up (kinda)

Jin ling like, zombie-walks himself back into the wall

Lwj and wwx look at each other like what the heck??

They decide they probably shouldn’t stick around so get out of the bunker

They spot someone running away from the area and wwx is like go catch them, lan zhan!

Lwj: i’ll go. You and jin ling…

And wwx is all, i’ll get him out of here and we can meet up at the tavern after

Lwj stares at him BC HE DOESN’T WANT TO LEAVE HIS SIDE, HE JUST GOT HIM BACK LAST EPISODE!!

But wwx is like, lan zhan go catch the bad guy before he gets away!

Wwx: i’ll be there. Lan zhan, take care

Chase scene!

Huh, nhs is pretty nimble on his feet, isn’t he?

Lwj chucks bichen at him but only manages to slice off a piece of his robes

Oooh, wwx got jin ling back to his room and noticed a curse mark on jin ling’s leg

He pulls open jl’s robes to see if the mark spread to his chest (it hasn’t)

Ofc jin ling wakes up just as wwx finishes doing that

Jl: whAT ARE YOU DOING WHY ARE YOU TAKING OFF MY CLOTHES

Good boy, jl, that is exactly how you should react if some strange guy tries to undress you when you’re unconscious

Wwx: why are you freaking out bro, i just saved you from that man-eating wall

And jl is all IMMA KILL YOU!!

And wwx is like been there done that, don’t really want a repeat…

Wwx sees jl’s jade lotus pendant and asks him about it

Jl: my mother left me this! Don’t touch it!!

See, jl is such a brat but then these little moments happen and i just want to hug him and bundle him up in blankets and make him hot chocolate…

HE’S SO STARVED FOR LOVING FAMILY AND AFFECTION, THAT POOR KID ;_;

We get a flashback to jyl giving wwx a similar pendant and wwx clutches at his robes in AGONY at the memory

Jl uses this moment to put on his boots and FUCKING BOOK IT RIGHT OUTTA THERE

Cut to street view, wwx is wandering around trying to find jin ling but instead he hears jc’s voice and dives for the first hiding place he can find

Wwx almost avoided a jc encounter

He would’ve gotten away with it too if it weren’t for that meddling dog

At least we get to see jc use zidian. I love zidian.

We get a big reveal scene and jc finds out that mo xuanyu is Wei Wuxian, surprise!!

Oh no, sad/angry yunmeng bro time (I MISS MY HAPPY YUNMENG BRO TIMES, GIVE THOSE BACK)

They’re back at an inn or whatever and jc is really just tearing into wwx

We’re not gonna go into detail except for this bit - 

Jc: 16 years...and lan wangji STILL wants to protect you

He’s so mad

It’s giving me Emotions™

Jc: maybe he’s not doing this to protect you. Someone with such integrity couldn’t possibly tolerate you. Maybe he had a deal with the guy who saved you.

Wwx: JC! Watch your language!

Yikes, they keep arguing and jfc they really know how to hit where it hurts, don’t they?

He lies through his teeth to JC. like yeah, i totally saw wen ning in an abandoned shack really really far away from here, for real :D

Now jin ling is in charge of guarding wwx after jc ties him up with zidian (seriously the COOLEST spiritual tool)

Jin ling takes it right off 

I LOVE THAT THE ZIDIAN LISTENS TO JIN LING OMG

We get a lot of fun uncle wwx and nephew jin ling interaction here bc jin ling helps wwx escape into the forest

Oh look, another moment that makes me like jin ling

He helps wwx escape since wwx saved him from the killer wall

He has honor!

Also wwx apologizes to jl here for that time he stuck his foot in his mouth way back at the start of the series

Wwx demonstrates his A+ acting skills by pretending to have been caught by jc and jl whirls around in a panic and wwx knocks him out

He inspects the curse mark on jl and is all, hmmm, can’t undo that curse rn but i can totally transfer it onto myself to save my nephew

And that’s the end of the episode!
