wip wednesday!

I've been working on this zukka fic for mermay, set on Ember Island in the year 1989. it's nowhere NEAR being finished but hopefully I'll at least post chapter one before the end of the month. here's a snippet:

The radio wouldn’t work. Zuko was pissed. He sat alone on the white sand of the cove, a fresh striped towel stretched beneath him, sandals strewn by his feet. It was the kind of place you had to be shown to even know it existed, led along the rotting boardwalk and down through the yellowing marram grass till swaying trees appeared, not one piece of litter to be seen on the entire journey. Stones scattered the ground, covered in dusty soil and specks of sunlight trickling down through the canopies. Birds sang to each other. The place smelled like growing. The earth sloped downwards, the trees thinned out. Then suddenly it was there — a slim crescent of sand surrounded on three sides by towering jagged black rock, slick with orange moss, spiky with periwinkles. The sharp green water glistened under the plump afternoon sun and sloshed against the shore in a lazy rhythm. He didn’t even notice he was taking deep breaths, in and out with the sea.
