Narrated `Aisha
The necklace of Asma' رضی اللہ عنہا was lost, so the Prophet (ﷺ) sent some men to look for it. The time for the prayer became due and they had not performed ablution and could not find water, so they offered the prayer without ablution. Then Allah revealed (the Verse of Tayammum).

ISLAM 101: THE HOLY QUR’AN: Part 7
Why is the Qur’an in Arabic?; How can the Qur’an have a universal nature if it was revealed in Arabic?
The guidance from God comes through the Prophets and the Messengers; they brought with them the Book from God in the language of their people. The fact that the Qur’an was revealed in Arabic is clearly referred to in the following verses:
Alif. Lam. Ra. These are the Revelations of the Book clear in itself and clearly showing the truth. We send it down as a Qur'an (discourse) in Arabic so that you may reflect (on both its meaning and wording) and understand. (Yusuf 12:1-2)
We have sent no Messenger save with the tongue of his people, that he might make (the Message) clear to them. Then God leads whomever He wills astray, and He guides whomever He wills. He is the All-Glorious with irresistible might, the All-Wise. (Ibrahim 14:4)
This (Qur’an) is indeed the Book of the Lord of the worlds being sent down by Him (in parts). The Trustworthy Spirit brings it down on your heart, so that you may be one of the warners (entrusted with the Divine Revelation), in clear Arabic tongue. (Shu’ara 26:192-195)
The divine reason why God sent Messengers from among human beings and why He revealed His Books to them was to guide His servants to the right path via the same Messengers and Books.
God sent every Messenger to communicate in the language of his people.
Prophet Moses and Prophet Jesus, peace be upon them, appeared among the Jews, the Books sent to them were revealed in Hebrew. In the same way, God’s Messenger appeared among the Arabs as the last link of the chain of Prophets and was sent with God’s final Revelation to all humanity, which was in Arabic.
The Divine reason why the Qur’an was revealed in Arabic is that the people, to whom the Qur’an was initially addressed, would better understand God’s commands and prohibitions. If the Prophet had been sent revelations in different languages then his people would have been confused and would not have understood anything; they would have demanded an explanation.
Accordingly, one of the purposes of the Qur’an being revealed in Arabic is that the Arab community was expected to understand the perfection of the Qur’an which was clear evidence to its being a divine Revelation. It was revealed to the Prophet in his own language and therefore, they could not hide behind any excuses for not being able to understand the Book.
The fact that the Glorious Qur’an is in Arabic does not mean that it was revealed only for the Arabs. In the following verse, God Almighty calls on people to reflect on the fact that He never sent any Messenger but in the language of that Messenger’s people so that the message would be clear to them:
“We have sent no Messenger save with the tongue of his people, that he might make (the Message) clear to them. ” (Ibrahim 14:4).
This verse does not mean that the Message brought by Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is not binding for all to whom it is conveyed.
God says in the Qur’an:
“We have not sent you but to all humankind as a bearer of glad tidings (of prosperity for faith and righteousness) and a warner (against the consequences of misguidance). But most of humankind do not know (this, nor do they appreciate what a great blessing it is for them)” (Seaba 34:28).
God’s Messenger said,
“Every prophet was sent to their people in their respective language. God Almighty has sent me to both the red-skinned and the dark-skinned from among His creatures.’’
In another tradition, he says:
“I have been granted five things which were granted to no one before me: God made me victorious with awe (He caused awe among my enemies) for a distance of one month’s journey. The earth has been made for me (and for my followers) as a place for the offering of prayers and as a thing for purification (to perform tayammum); therefore anyone of my community can perform the prayers wherever they are at the time of prayer. The gains of war have been made lawful to me yet it was not lawful to anyone else before me. I have been given the right of intercession (on the Day of Resurrection). Every Prophet was sent to his nation alone, but I have been sent to all of humanity.’’
It is quite clear that even a Book with a universal nature must perforce use of the words of one of the many languages in the world so that people can understand teachings of the Book and convey its messages to other people, especially to those who are not conversant with the original language.
This is the only way by which the Divine Message can become universally widespread.
The verse,
“We send it down as a Qur'an (discourse) in Arabic so that you may reflect (on both its meaning and wording) and understand” (Yusuf 12:1)
implies that the Revelation is sent in the language of the Arabs. The addressees of the Prophet at the time were unable to make any excuses or to say that they could not understand whether the message was true or not, as they did not understand the language.
The words, subject, style and language of the Qur’an are all clear and it cannot be alleged that it was written by the Prophet himself or by any other Arabic speaking person.
God did not send any Prophet to people with a message that was in a different language. He sent them all Revelations in the language of their communities. This is Sunnatullah, or practice of God.
Indeed, the fact that God sent every Messenger with a Book to their respective communities in their own languages so that the Prophets could easily communicate the religion to these communities and so that these communities could understand God’s commands and transmit them to others is one of God’s blessings. It is in this way that Almighty God made it easier for them to find and reach the truth.
Thus, all Messengers were sent with a Book in the language of their people so that they would be able to explain the message for which they were responsible. They were also reminded that those who know something have a duty to inform others and those who are present must inform those who are absent.
The mission of Prophets is to declare their Prophethood to their communities and to invite them to faith in God, whether they were sent to only a particular community or to other communities, or whether this is, as in the case of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, all of humanity and the jinn.
Such a duty is best fulfilled in the language that the community most easily understands. As in the verse,
“And (O Messenger) warn your nearest kinsfolk” (Shuara 26:214),
God’s Messenger is ordered to warn first his kith and kin. Starting from his close relatives, the Prophet delivers the divine Message to all of his community and, during the course of such a delivery, those who know Arabic can render the Message into the languages of other communities and thus convey the Message to them.
People with knowledge of more than one language thus have the honor of being messengers of the Messenger and heirs of the Prophet. In order to enjoy the same honor, other individuals also learn Arabic and the Message is conveyed widely from one language to another and from one community to another.
It should be noted that there must be other divine reasons for the revelation of the Qur’an in Arabic; some of these we can know, while others we cannot. One of these reasons may be that Arabic could be the most appropriate language in the human realm for Divine discourse. In the Qur’an, God Almighty described it as the “Arabic Qur’an,” thus making the Arabic language the vessel for His miraculous Book.

REFLECTIONS ON THE QUR'AN: Suratu'l-Baqarah (The Cow) : Part 23
“God wills ease for you, and He does not will hardship for you.” (Al-Baqarah 2:185)
Basically, there is no compulsion in the religion. Things that are seemingly hard are actually a means of ease. God always prefers ease for His servants in matters involving difficulty and trouble. Shortening the Prayer during travel; the permission for breaking the fast in the evening instead of ordering a fast from dawn to dawn; and the permission for tayammum (dry ablution using sand or dust, which may be performed in place of the ritual ablution or the whole body ablution if no clean water is readily available or there is some serious harm or danger in using water) are only a few examples. Even the mistakes in the devotions are forgiven if they are out of forgetting. For instance, if a person forgets that he or she is fasting and eats or drinks, this is not considered a violation of the fast; rather, it is considered a feast from Allāh. Furthermore, some exemptions are granted for the excused due to an essential or incidental reason, and easiness has always been preferred in the practice of the religion. For this reason, there are many seemingly-hard obligations that are in fact the cornerstone of the eternal happiness. For instance, many acts of worship involve struggling with the carnal soul and requiring patience. But they cause believers to rise to higher levels of the spiritual life, to gain resistance against any hardship, and to acquire a state apt for the afterlife.
In addition, if certain acts of worship cause trouble for those with some impediments or excuses, Divine dispensation or exemption comes to their help, and these acts of worship are either changed with easy substitutes, or they can even be omitted by the excused persons, leaving the spiritual reward to come from them to the good, sincere intention of the excused. For example, material or financial compensations or atonements compensate for the permitted omission of an act of worship, while the exemption from some acts of those who are too old or too weak to perform them or of those who suffer irrecoverable disease is compensated by the sincere intention of believers to perform them.
Difficulty and ease in fulfilling religious commands are directly proportional with one’s spiritual condition, educational level, habitude, and so on. This is so because the religion is all-inclusive, from the beginners to the educated and the pious. That is, it does not matter if the members of the religion of Islam are professors or students or doorkeepers, laborers, or bosses. It perfectly satisfies everyone with every level of understanding intellectually and spiritually. Everybody can feel the happiness and contentment of obedience to God’s commands and prohibitions according to their own spiritual level. However, if one examines the commands and prohibitions of Islam in regard to their essential nature, one understands that so much ease and tolerance are included in those commands and prohibitions.

"a resistance fighter seeks the opinions of scholars. He asks, "Peace be upon you. my feet are swollen from exhaustion and fatigue, and the flesh nails in my feet hurt me from standing too much. i can't take off my shoes because of the pain, and if i take them off, i can't put them back on since they'll be bleeding. sometimes, due to the intensity of the pain, tears stream down my face, and my hands crack from the cold at night. my question is, what should i do in my prayers, especially fajr? can i perform tayammum instead of ablution, knowing that water worsens the wounds and if we find it, we use it for drinking. the scholar responds, "may my soul be sacrificed for your sake, my brother. how unfortunate it is that we sleep all night on a soft bed with warm, tender feet, and then we rise heavily to pray fajr, if we don't oversleep. if a fighter like you, besieged, exhausted, and worn out from the battle, often experiencing hunger, thirst, and cold, asks this question, what do we say then?!! we complain to Allah, and there is no power or strength except with Allah. perform tayammum, O delight of the nation's eyes, the crown of scholars and imams, perform tayammum, my beloved."

5:6
O believers! When you rise up for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of ˹full˺ impurity,[1] then take a full bath. But if you are ill, on a journey, or have relieved yourselves, or have been intimate with your wives and cannot find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth by wiping your faces and hands.[2] It is not Allah’s Will to burden you, but to purify you and complete His favour upon you, so perhaps you will be grateful.
[1] This ruling is called tayammum or ‘dry ablution.’ See footnote for 4:43.
[2] For example, following sexual intercourse or a wet dream.

SAHIH AL-BUKHARI, Book 8, Hadith 87
Chapter (56): The sayings of the Prophet (SallAllahu ‘alaihi Sallam) "The earth has been made for me a Masjid (place for praying) and a thing to purify (to perform Tayammum)."
Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah (RadiyAllahu ‘anhu):
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "I have been given five things which were not given to any amongst the Prophets before me.
These are: -
Allah made me victorious by awe (by His frightening my enemies) for a distance of one month's journey. -
The earth has been made for me (and for my followers) a place for praying and a thing to perform Tayammum. Therefore my followers can pray wherever the time of a prayer is due. -
3. The booty has been made Halal (lawful) for me (and was not made so for anyone else). -
4. Every Prophet used to be sent to his nation exclusively but I have been sent to all mankind. -
I have been given the right of intercession (on the Day of Resurrection.)

Although the deeds of worship are not explained in the Quran, how were they, for instance, the number of the rak’ahs of prayers, determined? Is the source sacred hadiths since the amount is not mentioned in the Quran?
Sunnah: The words, deeds and approval of the Prophet (pbuh).
"If a person skips a prayer by sleeping or forgetting, let him perform it when he remembers." (Abu Dawud, Salah, II; Darimi, Salah, 26)
The hadith above is an example of verbal sunnah (sunnah based on words).
"Perform prayers in the way that you see me perform." (Bukhari, Adhan, 18, Adab, 27, Ahad, I)
The hadith above is an example of actual sunnah (sunnah based on deeds). A Companion performed prayer with tayammum because he could not find water and he did not perform his prayer again though he found water after performing the prayer; the Prophet (pbuh) approved it, which is an example of sunnah of approval. It is unanimously agreed in fiqh that sunnah is the second main source after the Quran. It is definite by verses of the Quran that sunnah is regarded as evidence:
"…So take what the Messenger assigns to you, and deny yourselves that which he withholds from you..." (al-Hashr, 59/7).
"But no, by the Lord, they can have no (real) Faith, until they make thee judge in all disputes between them, and find in their souls no resistance against Thy decisions, but accept them with the fullest conviction." (an-Nisa, 4/65)
''He who obeys the Messenger, obeys Allah...'' (an-Nisa, 4/80)
"O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those charged with authority among you..." (an-Nisa 4/59)
''It is not fitting for a Believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and His Messenger to have any option about their decision..." (al-Ahzab, 33/36)
Sunnah is the Prophet’s fulfilling the duty of messengership he took from His Lord by conveying the message to people. The following is stated in a verse regarding the issue:
"O Messenger! Proclaim the (message) which hath been sent to thee from thy Lord. If thou didst not, thou wouldst not have fulfilled and proclaimed His mission..." (al-Maida, 5/67).
The Quran states that the Prophet (pbuh) speaks based on revelation:
"Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire. It is no less than inspiration sent down to him." (an-Najm, 53/3-4)
On the other hand, the verses of the Quran states clearly that it is necessary to believe in the Prophet (pbuh):
''…So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the Unlettered Prophet, who believeth in Allah and His words: follow him that (so) ye may be guided.'' (al-A'raf, 7/158)
Sunnah has three functions in the face of the Quran. It explains the ambiguous and concise verses of the Quran, specifies general decrees of the Quran, mentions the abrogating and abrogated verses, introduces complementary decrees to the verses whose origins are certain in the Quran, imposes some decrees that do not exist in the Quran. That the way of performing prayers and paying zakah, which are orders in the Quran, are explained by sunnah, the decree that the marriage of a man who accuses his wife of adultery but who cannot prove it will end if he practices mula’ana (mutual damning), and the hadiths that prohibit eating the flesh of domestic donkeys and birds of prey are examples of it.

Narrated `Aisha
She borrowed a necklace from Asma' رضی اللہ عنہا and then it got lost. So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent some people from his companions in search of it. In the meantime the stated time for the prayer became due and they offered their prayer without ablution. When they came to the Prophet, they complained about it to him, so the Verse regarding Tayammum was revealed . Usaid bin Hudair رضی اللہ عنہا said, "(O `Aisha!) may Allah bless you with a good reward, for by Allah, never did a difficulty happen in connection with you, but Allah made an escape from it for you, and brought Allah's Blessings for the Muslims."
Narrated by Sahih Bukhari in his bookImam Bukhari

ISLAM 101: Your Purification: Part 4
The Major Ritual Impurity and the Full Ablution(Ghusl /Ritual Bath):
Things which Require a Person to Perform Full Ablution:
There are certain things which require an adult Muslim to perform full ablution (ghusl) before engaging in the prayer or circumambulating the Ka‛bah. Before he performs such ablution, he is said to be in a state of a major ritual impurity.
These things are as follows:
Ejaculation with pleasure and by any means, while asleep or awake. Ejaculation involves the expulsion of seminal fluid, a thick whitish fluid, from the urethra of the penis during orgasm, which is generally followed by a feeling of lethargy and inertia
Sexual intercourse: This involves penetration even if it does not lead to ejaculation. In fact, mere penetration of the glans into the vagina provides sufficient grounds for performing ghusl, i.e.taking a ritual bath. The Qur’an says, “If you are in a state of major impurity, then purify yourselves.”(Soorat Al-Maa’idah, 5:6)
Menstrual blood and post-natal bleeding
•Menstrual blood is a natural type of blood, which flows from the uterus of women and occurs at roughly monthly intervals during a woman’s reproductive years. It usually lasts more or less seven days with some variation from one woman to another.
•Post-natal bleeding: This bleeding takes place following a delivery in the post-natal period and lasts for a number of days.
Menstruating women and women experiencing their post-natal bleeding are exempt from fasting as well as from performing the prayers. They must, however, make up for their missed fasts but not for the missed prayers. During this period, a husband and wife can satisfy their sexual desire but without having an intercourse. At the end of menstruation and post-natal bleeding, women must take a ritual bath (ghusl).
As the Qur’an states, “They will ask you about menstruation. Say, ‘It is an impurity, so keep apart from women during menstruation and do not approach them until they have purified themselves. But once they have purified themselves, then go to them in the way that Allah has enjoined on you.’” (Soorat Al-Baqarah, 2:222)
How to Remove the Major Ritual Impurity (Janaabah)?
To perform the full ablution, It would be sufficient for a Muslim to wash the entire body with water with the intention that it is for the purpose of purity and worship.
However, the best method of taking a ritual bath is to wash oneself in the same way one cleans oneself after answering nature’s call, perform wudoo’ and then wash the entire body with water. Doing so increases one’s rewards, as it is in accordance with the guidance of the Prophet .
After taking a ritual bath that way, there is no need to perform wudoo’along with it. However, the best method of removing the major ritual impurity is to perform the full ablution which includes wudoo’, for this was the very practice of the Prophet .
What to Do in Case One Is Unable to Use Water
If a Muslim is unable to use water to perform wudoo’ or take a ritual bath (ghusl) due to illness, when water is not readily available or when using the available water for wudoo’ or ghusl would leave insufficient water for drinking, he can resort to pure earth as a substitute for ablution. This is called tayammum, and he can continue to do so until he finds sufficient water or becomes able to use it.
Manner of Performing Tayammum:
(1) Strike both hands slightly on pure earth once,
(2) wipe the face with them,
(3) wipe the back of the right hand with the palm of the left, and then the back of the left hand with the palm of the right hand.
