I know I already posted both of these but I think they're funny because apparently in order to be my friend you have to have:
A: a herding dog
B: tanpoints only
C: no braincells club

With no negative consequences, you can bring one color/pattern/marking not in a dachshunds into the breed. Which one are you picking?
I had to go check the standard and I think that just about every color occurs in dachshunds. They've got liver, tanpoint, merle, piebald, the dilutes, sable, ee red, agouti (wild boar), brindle...
I think about the only thing that doesn't occur off the top of my head is a black mask, so I'd add that and get a black masked sable.
That way I could get my black masked sable shepherd and my black masked sable longdog.
Thank you for asking!

I had a dream that I wrote a tumblr post on labrador retriever colour genetics for some reason and now I'm like well since dog colour genetics IS an interest of mine, why not. I don't remember what I wrote about specifically in my dream but here's a few lab colour facts.
(N.B. I am not getting into the debate of purebred vs mixed, I am not saying one is better than the other etc, just stating a few facts)
There is only one breed of labrador, the labrador retriever. Yellow/brown/black lab just refers to the coat colour. They share the same breed standard, are judged together and can be interbred, they are not different breeds.
All colours you can find in dogs are created through the interaction of two different kinds of colour pigment, they are eumelanin (black/chocolate brown/blue/lilac) and phaeomelanin (all shades of red from deep copper to off-white). White is absence of pigment all together.
For labradors specifically, black and brown are expressions of eumelanin, yellow labs express phaeomelanin. From a genetic viewpoint, all yellow labs from the super pale cream ones to the deep fox red ones are genetically "red", they just have additional genes that bleach/darken their red shade.
Most (maybe all) labrador retrievers are genetically tanpoint ("dobermann pattern") but almost all of them also have a gene called "dominant K" which overrides that pattern, leaving them solid black or brown. In very rare cases, purebred puppies can be born that show the pointed pattern.
Yellow labs also have a gene that prohibits the expression of eumelanin in the coat, instead they exhibit only phaeomelanin, which is otherwise "overridden" by the dominant K, black/brown -> red.
In very rare cases, dogs can have something called a "somatic mutation" where you can get a dog that expresses two or more coat patterns/colours at once. Try googling "somatic mutation labrador" and you'll see some cool labs that are mixed black and yellow, which is normally impossible. This kind of mutation happens randomly, it is not genetic and can not be bred for. It is not the same thing as merle.
Small white markings such as a chest spot or white toes is something that can randomly happen in puppies if the pigment did not have time to develop fully before birth. Often such markings go away as the dog ages and the pigment fills in. However, more extensive white markings (like white that forms a full or partial white collar, extends pasts the toes etc) is a sign that the dog has another breed or breeds mixed in, the genes to produce that amount of white spotting does not exist in purebred labradors.
"Silver" labradors are labs that have been crossbred with a breed that carries the dilution gene (usually a weimaraner), which turns black to blue and brown to lilac. Unscrupulous breeders try to pass these dogs off as rare and exotic purebred labs to fool unsuspecting buyers. Breed DNA tests are not reliable as they can not spot a mixed in breed after 3 generations. The breeding of silver labs is unethical as the dilution gene is tied to health issues, in particular CDA (colour dilution alopecia) which can lead to itchiness, flaky skin, hairless/balding and skin infections.
Artist bonus: - If you are drawing a black lab, it should have a black nose and brown eyes. - If you are drawing a brown lab, it should have a brown or flesh-coloured nose and amber or light brown eyes. It is genetically impossible for a brown lab (or any other dog breed that comes in dark brown/chocolate/liver colour) to have a black nose and dark brown eyes. They just can't produce that kind of pigment. SO many people including professionals get this wrong and it drives me up the wall, use references people lol - If you are drawing a yellow lab, it can have black OR brown pigment "behind the yellow", but black pigment is most common, so black nose/brown eyes. These dogs sometimes have a flesh-coloured spot on their nose, which is called a dudley nose.

What is your favorite color of dog? Or any animal? It seems like you have had mostly blondies but that might be a happenstance
It is happenstance ! I actually like darkly shaded sable dogs or agouti best. But shaded sable with a black mask is also a favorite for me and i love tanpoint as well. A locus, woooo!

I have mixed feelings about dogs showing up in non-standard colors (e.g. Merle bulldogs and poodles), because on one hand it’s just color and who gives a shit, after a few generations they’re going to test as 100% pure anyway, there’s functionally no difference in two Labradors if one of them had a Weimaraner as a great-great-grandparent. It’s whatever.
on the other hand SO MANY of these dogs are coming specifically from shitty breeders aiming for “rare” colors that I totally understand the people who get so pissy about it. Like yeah sorry your lilac Merle tan point Frenchie didn’t come from a good breeder, let’s not pretend otherwise. the vast majority of “rare color” purebreds were intentionally bred for that color and if that DOESNT set off red flags for you, idk what to tell you.

okay. so i am thinking, have been thinking. n this is the simplest i can think to get to it. so mayb. if there was a line of dogs tht was like. composed of….. like. some greyhound, flat coated retriever, great dane, n mayb…american bulldog? mix those genes all around until u get something that is. biggish. with decent health. just like overall fairly easy temperament & exercise reqs. lastly && most importantly.. ….a short single coat. this is the main goal, short n single
then. there will be a second line also. composed of…. of maybe.. corso and tosa inu and maybe presa genes? boerboel? bully kutta if u could get em? & to whatever good lgd are available, probly mostly anatolians n working pyr if this hypothetical takes place in america? then stir them up together in a big pot to get a solid short double coated farm-y guardian mutt
Then,
could hypothetically. maybe use these to make some nice medium energy, fairly trainable for dog-beginners but still more aloof, tinged toward guardian temperament “breed” with a short single coat bc…. there is just a lot of fur. longish medium double is a lot. it seems like SO just in case anyone wanted to dedicate their life toward a dog w my exact specifications. & u may be thinking “des what is the utility of a guardian breed whose coat wouldnt allow it to live full time outdoors?” well. not much utility probly. i dont need it to live out there, mines a pet. it wouldnt be very useful i imagine, thats why they dont fuckin exist in any form as far as i can tell. all the group 2 breeds have double coats, it’s inescapable. im not saying i made up a useful breed its just the one i want to exist
anyway post brought 2 u by ummm i saw the first snow of the season recently & pups winter undercoat feels so dense n thick im intimidated for the coat blow already & i have been inventing a fictional short single coated guardian-esque breed in my head to cope

Tanpoint <3 this dog's siblings and pedigree are nearly all light sable or agouti, at least the ones with photos available. Tanpoint is recessive to both sable and agouti so he was a little surprise :)

I'm sending you an Australian cattle dog
Fun fact: Back when I was planning to get my second dog when Bindi was two or three (hahaha ha ha haha haaaaa…), ACDs were one of the breeds I looked into.
Anyway, I’d get a bitch because I’m not bringing a strong-willed asshole male into a house with Zaku in it. She’d be a black tanpoint bitch and I’d name her Bam Bam.
We’d do all the things: Agility, nosework, bikejoring, racing, dock diving. She’d come on hunts and hikes with us and she’d probably be a hell of a crittering dog. ACDs are pretty sharp so it would be a lot like managing Bindi, just hopefully more stable.
There are a lot of ACDs involved in sports about an hour north of me, so we’d be adopted into the clan immediately.
Thanks for asking!

No labor is the same! This one was a little wild. Only 15 min between some of them
It took Gigi a lot longer to realize what was happening and what she needed to do compared to my other moms, I'm guessing due to age. But her instincts and hormones kicked in and she's doing phenomenally now ♥️
After sister Kestrel's 7 hr whelping pause I won't say she's definitely done but she did have 6 total, which was all we were 100% certain of in the x-ray. There may be a couple more being shifted into position as she sleeps
Sadly, only 5 were born viable. Having Pip here to cry on made the stillborn so much more bearable than the last. And now I'm simply grateful Gigi is doing well and that her 5 beautiful puppies are eating and pooping like champs already!
Formal introductions tomorrow, but we have:
Two long coated sable girls, Alexis and Moira (who has one long opera glove)
Two tanpoint boys, which will shade out to creeping tan or saddleback. David and Johnny
A short coated sable boy, Roland
I wouldn't complain about a black female to be Stevie haha!
They're definitely Kai's thank god. Lining up homes has been much easier than expected and everyone is healthy so far. All I could ask for to come out of such a shitty circumstance.
The back room here has a bed right next to where her whelping box is. At first I was worried I wouldn't get any sleep for a couple of days because she almost stepped on a couple and didn't keep track of when we took puppies from her. But now Gigi's being the attentive, careful mother her own was. Sleeping curled around them nuzzled up is a new one, so sweet

hi sorry to dog breeding game post im just giving you a glimpse into like a 20 minute daily activity w insane mechanics but i imported a fake dog with an R/r color gene but it has a non-lethal musculoskeletal disorder which means that in 3-4 generations if im lucky i can have tanpoint or creeping tan greyhounds that are moderately healthy and look more or less decent. ive been TRYING to have a non-saddle at/at greyhound for weeks but the last one w R/r died before i could breed him because he had IBS. afaik im the only one on the site w at/at greys. breeding for color is unethical etc etc but their conformation has been drastically improving also theyre fake and also look this one is blue
