STORY DESCRIPTION

Four death row inmates with unique personalities are given a stay of execution with the condition that they go on a suicide mission as ordered by the Shogun. Their team is called the "Jakkotai".

In addition to Nogizaka46, she has also created choreography for Namie Amuro, Ayumi Hamasaki, AKB48 and others.

LICO-san is the choreographer for the songs that have added flair to Nogizaka's [latest] summers, last year's 'Ohitorisama Tengoku' and this year's 'Cheat Day'.

LICO-san, who's been in charge of Nogizaka46's choreography for no less than 10 years, looks back on the works she's choreographed and talks about the changes in Nogizaka46.

Q: LICO-san, please tell us how you became a choreographer.

A: Since I graduated from acting school, I used to sing & dance to choreographies I'd created myself. As I was teaching Avex newcomers, I was asked to choreograph. I remember starting to work at around 18 years of age. After that, I started working as a choreographer for Nami Tamaki-san, Namie Amuro-san and Ayumi Hamasaki-san.

Q: Was AKB48 the first idol [group] you worked with?

A: Indeed. I think the first time was for Team B's 3rd Stage, 'Pajama Drive'. Afterwards, I was in charge of the entire thing for Team A's 6th Stage, 'Mokugekisha', and I began properly choreographing for idols.

Q: Even though they had back dancers, Namie Amuro-san and Ayumi Hamasaki-san both are solo singers, so wasn't it difficult to choreograph for AKB who fundamentally has 16 people [on stage at the same time]?

A: If anything, I rather liked coming up with formations for a large number of people. I enjoy thinking about things like 'Would it look nice if we did a canon* with this many people?'. Namie-san had a one-man-show image in a good way, but Hamasaki-san's had back dancers, which made it a whole production, while for AKB48 [the performance] is made up of strictly the members. As I kept on doing it, I thought to myself "Maybe I'm cut out for choreographing for idols". Precisely then is when I got the offer to choreograph for Nogizaka46.

Q: Please tell us your first impression of Nogizaka46.

A: My first work for the group was 'Dekopin' (5th single coupling song), and I thought that both Shiraishi (Mai)-san and Hashimoto (Nanami)-san were SO cute that they came from a different dimension. At that time, there was this certain "I'm not sure how far can I go" hesitation, but either way, I was serious about working hard on coming up with something good.

Q: After 'Dekopin', which was the next song you choreographed?

A: It was 'Sekai de Ichiban Kodoku na Lover' (6th single coupling song). It's a dance-focused song, but the [individual] parts that make it up aren't that difficult. Since the lyrics are about feelings of love [peering through] in the midst of [acting] tough, I wanted to create an atmosphere of intense dancing while also making it look cute. For instance, the choreography during '心叫んで涙も拭わないまま (when my heart is screaming like this and my tears won't dry)' is one such case.

Q: The A-side of the 7th single, 'Barrette', features the memorable choreography of Hori (Miona)-san, who had just joined the group as a 2nd generation member and was chosen as the center, walking down the path created by her seniors.

A: I had the image of Hori-san going out and away and not losing to her seniors, while living a strong life in an unsparing world.

Q: What did you think about the 8th single's coupling song, 'Romance no Start'?

A: Since the song was also used in a commercial for Megashaki [= carbonated energy drink], I added some moves that gave off the impression of waking up.

Q: Are there any differences between working on an A-side and a coupling song?

A: Basically, there aren't any differences rooted in them being the A-side or a coupling song, it all just depends on the [sound/lyrics of the] song. Nevertheless, for the A-sides there's a lot of pressure, and I think there are expectations for it to look good and catch on. I think you get more freedom in the case of coupling songs.

Q: The A-side of the 10th single, 'Nandome no Aozora ka?', is one of Nogizaka46's royal road* songs.

A: I thought "It'll be difficult to make this song 'catchy'", so I had all sorts of discussions with everyone in the staff. The highlight of the song is the change in atmosphere during the chorus, from the skyward movement to the hook where they're counting on their fingers, all the way until the interlude.

[*T/N: royal road = an easy or straightforward procedure for achieving a goal; a procedure that requires little effort & a chord progression, IVᴹ⁷–V⁷–iii⁷–vi, common in japanese pop music.]

Q: Did the presence of the center, Ikuta Erika-san, have an impact on the choreography?

A: Ikuta-san's presence was decisive. Maybe it was because of the good upbringing she received from her parents, maybe it was her good environment, but Ikuta-san is overflowing with talent, yet very easy to approach also.

Q: You've also choreographed 'Boku no Shoudou' (the 3rd generation coupling song), but, what was your impression of the 3rd generation members?

A: When the 3rd generation came in, I got the impression that these girls had a strong desire to improve themselves. As they continued their activities, I started feeling like they were becoming more and more 'Nogizaka-like'.

Q: 'Boku no Shoudou' is an intense song.

A: At that time, even with the performance of headsets, handheld microphones were still the norm, so I wanted to create a choreo that would push people to their limits while holding a handheld microphone.

Q: Thanks to the impact of Nogizaka Koujichuu (TV Tokyo) also, the final facial expression of the center, Ito Riria-san, has been attracting attention for the past two years.

A: I didn't expect her to be so proactive. I think that's what's so amazing about her. For 'Sazanami wa Modoranai' (32nd single coupling song), I incorporated choreography that brought out the most of Riria's facial expressions and told her "Since you're in the center, I want to see an expression with a feeling that seems ripped straight out of 'Boku no Shoudou'".

Q: You were in charge of the choreography for the first 4th generation song, 'Kiss no Shuriken' (included on the 4th album).

A: From the very moment the 4th generation joined, I thought they were 'Nogizaka-like'. It might've been the aura of Endo (Sakura)-san that made me feel that way. Given that the girls couldn't dance all that well yet, we decided to make the 'Kiss no Shuriken' simple and cute, from finger hearts to throwing shurikens. When you get to the 'Shushushushushu' lyrics, there's nothing else you can do but throw shurikens (laughs).

Q: When you first heard the 4th generation song 'I see...' (25th single coupling song), did you think it was going to be buzzworthy?

A: I never could've guessed that it was going to cause such a buzz. For the choreo, I just wanted to convey the joy I'd felt when hearing the song. I was getting more and more excited myself when making the choreography. So much so, that during a concert I was dancing together with them (laughs).

Q: The representative pose is done over and over again, isn't it.

A: I included the movement for 'I love you' in sign language. Precisely because of its simplicity, I aimed for a choreography that everyone could dance to. To say the least, Kaki (Haruka)-san's smile really was invaluable.

Q: Wilderness World (26th single coupling song) was a dance song with (Saito) Asuka-san in the center.

A: If it was Asuka-san who was in the center, then I wanted her to dance. Plus, I wanted to make the formation look beautiful. I also incorporated some sniper-like moves to tie-in with the 'Knives Out' tie-up.

Q: Please tell us about Asuka-san's charm.

A: No matter what she does, she's great at showing it off, and whenever Asuka-san dances, the atmosphere completely changes. When Asuka-san's in the center, I feel like I want to make the choreography difficult. I think 'Fukayomi' (29th single coupling song) with Asuka-san in the center was difficult for the members, too.

Q: 'Gomen ne Fingers Crossed' (27th single A-side) features a striking fingers-crossed pose.

A: While I was wondering how to make that pose look beautiful, I thought that Endo-san would be able to make the movement look really cool from the top-down. I was kind of worried whether it'd be okay for her to dance like that, but, during the MV filming Endo-san improved a lot. I think Endo-san had an awakening through 'Gomefin'. Now, she's someone who's able to change the atmosphere of the whole thing. At the time of this year's Zenkoku Tour, during 'Wilderness World' too, Endo-san almost seemed possessed [by something] and broke through to the audience.

Q: As for 5th generation songs, you've choreographed 'Band-Aid Hagasu You na Wakarekata' (30th single coupling song).

A: The lyrics made it easy to picture the choreography. There are many highlights, from the members illustrating the waves in the canon to the moves that start from '夏の恋はフェードアウト (summer love fades out)'. Even though we were filming the music video during a heat wave, everyone was dancing and keeping their facial expressions steady without blinking an eye and I couldn't help but imagine "These kids are going to turn out amazing". All of the girls were already perfect, and I found it unbelievable how the center, Sugawara (Satsuki)-san, had no prior dance experience. I guess she must just have a feel for it. Ioki (Mao)-san and Tomisato (Nao)-san had a hard time figuring out where the midpoint was, but by the next time we had met they'd figured it out.

Q: The 31st single's A-side, 'Koko ni wa Nai Mono' is Asuka's graduation song.

A: When I was entrusted with choreographing her graduation song, I was wondering what kind of present I could gift her. Originally, I made a beautiful choreography to match the music, but the production side told me 'We'd like a choreography that's more LICO-san-like', so I made it into a choreography that involved proper dancing. No matter how many times I had tried to make it work, the moves in the interlude that are supposed to look like wings felt out of place. There was a moment when I almost gave up, thinking "For Asuka-san to fly, it HAS to look like wings, otherwise there's no point". However, my staff told me "If you keep putting in the effort, it's bound to look like she's spreading her wings". As I continued trying, I saw the wings take shape.

Q: What did you keep in mind when creating the choreography for the 33rd single's A-side, 'Ohitorisama Tengoku', which symbolizes the emergence of a new generation in Nogizaka46?

A: When I first heard the title 'Ohitorisama Tengoku' (One-Person Paradise), I was taken aback and worried about how to best express it. At first, I thought of creating an angel's halo above their heads for when they'd sing the 'Ohitorisama Tengoku' part, but after talking to the staff on the production crew, we thought it'd be better to change it up a little, which is how we ended up with the lower, shoulder-height movement it is now. The clap at the beginning of the choreo is meant to let the audience know that this is a live song.

Q: The truth is, it has become a song that gets people excited during live shows. As for Inoue Nagi-san, what kind of impression did she leave you with?

A: Inoue-san is an all-rounder. She's good at singing, she can dance, she can even create her own worldview. It's left me thinking, "Is there anything this girl can't do?" Her heart is so sincere that it can be dyed any colour, so she doesn't have to worry no matter which song might be coming her way.

Q: The under song from the 35th single, 'Shadougawa', was made up of only 4th and 5th generation members.

A: The lyrics depict the relationship between childhood friends, and since the front members are Tsutsui (Ayame)-san, Sugawara-san and Tomisato-san, I wanted the choreography to also be cute. I created a choreo that focuses on the face quite a bit and features a lot more hand movements focused on the fingers, in hopes of people imitating it on TikTok. I often get ideas while I'm driving. I'll have the song playing on repeat when I'm driving, and at times I'll stop the car, kind of move my hands and think "This move might be cute!" Anyone who sees such a thing will probably curiously wonder "What on earth is she doing?" (laughs). For some reason, inspiration comes to me more easily when I'm actually doing something.

Q: What do you put emphasis on when you create choreography? I suppose it could be something such as 'expressing the lyrics' or 'fitting the song'.

A: The most important thing is expressing the lyrics. About as important is who stands in the center. I ponder "Since it's this girl, we should try creating this kind of atmosphere". We're paying attention to the whole formation also. I believe that the choreography is meant to synergize with the music. I reckon that my job is to double or triple that synergistic effect.

Q: For instance, on 'Cheat Day' (36th single A-side), the center Inoue Nagi-san is joined by two fellow 5kis, Ikeda Teresa-san and Ogawa Aya-san, who are at the front for the first time.

A: Even when I was creating the choreography, I got the feeling that having these three at the front made it so much fresher. The Cheat Day pose was conceptualized as an unrequited [hand] heart motif. The most difficult part was the 'yoroshiku' in "Yoroshiku cheat day". Up until then, the tempo is fast, but during 'yoroshiku' it slows down. I could've used a conventional pose like a salute or something like that there, but I didn't want to do that. There's no mention of eating in the lyrics, but I had them pose as if they were touching their mouth with their fingers after they had just eaten, and I put in a quick 'sorry' afterwards, before proceeding with the Cheat Day pose.

Q: Have you noticed any changes in Inoue-san?

A: Last year, I could sense that she was very on edge, but it got better while we were working on 'Ohitorisama Tengoku'. On 'Cheat Day', [you can see that] she's wholeheartedly having fun. Nevertheless, at first she seemed embarrassed about the 'Gomennasai' spoken part, so I remember telling Inoue-san that I pictured her shouting it seaward right as the sun was setting.

Q: Having choreographed for Nogizaka46 since its early years, have you noticed any changes?

A: When the 5th generation joined the group, it felt as if it had become fresher all at once. But there's one thing that's stayed the same all this time. The 5th generation members have also become 'Nogizaka-like'. Being in a large group can often seem tense, but the atmosphere in Nogizaka46 always is a good one. I'm intrigued as to what kind of training the management provides.

Q: LICO-san, is there anything you always tell the members whenever you teach them choreography?

A: I don't have any rule set in stone. However, if I think "This girl is doing something good", I make sure to diligently praise the person in question.

Q: Are there any members who haven't been mentioned thus far, but who you personally think are great?

A: Everyone's amazing. For instance, Kanagawa (Saya)-san is beautiful, she has a great figure and she's good at dancing. Umezawa (Minami)-san's atmosphere has become more malleable, too, so I've let her know that she's improved. I like Tsutsui (Ayame)-san's recent aura, and Ogawa-san is healing. There are things I love about everyone, and once I start talking about it, I can go on forever (laughs). I'd like to praise just about everyone.

Q: What are your expectations for Nogizaka46 from now on?

A: I'm curious as to what kind of girls will be joining with the [arrival of the] 6th generation. And with the 6th generation joining, I'm looking forward to seeing just how everyone - from the 3rd generation to the 5th generation - will change. [And,] From royal road songs to dance songs too, please leave the choreography to me.

I just finished playing Glass Heart: Retold and OMG IT IS SO GOOD. Was super interested in how a bunch of the love interests had connections. The music is beautiful. I looove the sprites. The game is fully voice acted and the love interests voice actors did an incredible job. Some parts are a bit cheesy but it's fun :) It's absolutely CRIMINAL that I haven't been able to find a fandom for this game. I've only found 8 fics on AO3 and ONE OF THEM IS IN FRENCH.

In Glass Heart you play as Meira, a 21 year old woman with a rare heart condition that has kept her in the hospital for most of her life. She got a heart donor right as her heart started failing. Her transplant surgery is a month away with a 20% chance of success. Meira wants to experience life outside the hospital before her high-stakes surgery, and each of the 6 love interests will help her do that.

Glass Heart: Retold is a remake. I haven't played the original, the main difference I know of are the 2 short stories after each route in the original. I was looking at the game files and found the CGs and sprites for those stories!! also saw a file with diary entries about each guy at different affection levels. maybe they'll be added in the future?

STORY DESCRIPTION
