Sometimes your childhood friend shits himself in class and joins a biker gang but sometimes they become a ichigo 100% themed antagonist of the week and explore cool new dimensions of transgenderism. And sometimes they become redeemed as a cool enby swordsman and sometimes they hang up their biker gang haori and start wearing the uniform of your idol otaku fanclub instead. So what I'm saying is that Takachin is Kyuubei's waluigi. In this metaphor, the Mario Luigi wario waluigi are Takasugi-Zura-Kyuubei-Takachin.

Hello there! For the mini event may you please do gintama with the au avatar the last airbender, thank you!
Hello there, my lovely anon! I definitely can do that - I really couldn't come up with solid ideas, so I admit to taking the lazy way out, so have a pretty comprehensive list on what type of Benders everyone would be in this AU! And guys, there are so many characters in Gintama so I swear it wasn't as easy and lazy as it looks! Thanks for sending in a request and I hope you'll enjoy!
Okay, so we're going into this AU with there being the four major bending types - Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Each bending type is as it is portrayed in Avatar: The Last Airbender, with people possessing different degrees of bending and different skills being present within each bending type.
So, when considering which type of Bender each character would be, I kind of broke it down into personality types and traits and qualities to look for, based on what I figure the 'stereotypical' Bender is for each of the four.
Earth Benders are a little rough around the edges, slow to anger, slow to decide on things, but stubborn once their mind is made up. They can be sensitive and they are often very patient.
Air Benders are gentle souls, respectful and adaptable, changeable. They're fast, both in their movements and in their thoughts.
Water Benders are typically calm and easy-going, flexible enough to adapt to their companions or situations. They're often quite easy to talk to and rather content with their lives.
Fire Benders are often prideful and confident individuals who are loyal, determined and ambitious. They can be very playful and fun but they often also have very short fuses on their tempers, which can be very volatile and explosive.
Keeping that in mind, this is what I figure the characters would be for Benders.

Hi! Thanks for reading and commenting 😁
I agree with you certain events that may’ve been impactful in youth are just experiences over time. The thing is, Shinpachi is still young, and I think some of those events should’ve left a lasting impression on him. I would say that part of the reason why he’s often considered a less interesting character than Gintoki and Kagura is precisely because, unlike them, he doesn’t go through said events.
For that reason I mentioned a romance with Kirara, but it could’ve been something else like a rivalry of some sort with his friend Takachin (whose existence I’d forgotten) for example. Concerning Obi Hajime, here I do consider that the impact should’ve been much greater taking into account the entire setup of how important he was in Shinpachi's life.
Regarding his dream, I agree it doesn't have to be something grand, but Shinpachi and Kagura were supposed to be the youngsters with aspirations, unlike Gintoki. Most of the characters in this series are adults who have already found their place in life, so I think there’s something valuable in showing that kind of coming-of-age story with Shinpachi.
In that sense, I like the idea of him joining the Shinsengumi because it's a different path (which was teased in the fake time skip arc). Inheriting the responsibilities of the dōjō was something his father had imposed on him, not something he decided for himself. Therefore, if he decides to be Ootsu's manager, work in a Host Club or something else, it would be fine.
I understand that not many 18 yo in real life know what to do with their lives, but also not many 18 yo face what Shinpachi did in the series. So I think it's normal to expect him to take a big step. It's not about him not being valuable in some other way, it's about realizing what he's good at and following his own path.
That's why I didn't like how he was shown to be incapable of moving forward if he wasn't in the Yorozuya. In Gintoki's case it makes sense that he’s stuck for everything that happened to him, but not with Shinpachi. I agree that Kagura represents the most traditional shōnen hero, even Sorachi once said she would end up as the most developed character of the series. However, all three ended up at the same place.
I wish instead of letting the audience assume he’ll eventually get better; his character development was shown. By this I don't mean in a shōnen way, just character development with relevant events and lasting consequences, in which Shinpachi has found something he wants to do and allows him to grow.
Thoughts about Shinpachi
Tumblr media
Many times I’ve seen how he’s called out for being a boring character or that he’s annoying for yelling a lot, and although he never seemed like an annoying character to me, I’ve to agree that he’s dull compared to his companions.
Shinpachi is the ordinary character of the main group, the straight man who balances Gintoki and Kagura within the Yorozuya. He starts out as someone who lacks strength and courage, but gradually improves over the course of the series. His initial goal is to save his family's dojo, though that’s more of something Tae wanted to do for his father, not a personal aspiration of his.
At first he was given the trait of being the leader of Otsuu's imperial troop, which was an interesting contrast to his usually submissive personality, showing he has leadership skills, but he never made much of it. Although it does help characterize him as someone with a very good heart, supporting Otsuu when she was just a street artist.
I think that's the strong point of Shinpachi's character. He’s compassionate and always remains optimistic despite difficulties. He’s kind and genuinely good. But he also suffers from an inferiority complex, he feels he has no control over his life in a society in which he lost the only thing that made him special, being a samurai.
In the case of Gintoki and Kagura, their stories were relatively planned from the beginning (at least Sorachi had an idea), which wasn’t the case with Shinpachi. We could say that Beam Saber arc is the arc of his past. Here, like his companions, he must face someone from his past who has become a villain. While it's a very emotional moment for both him and Tae, this whole situation has the problem that it was never brought up before and never brought up again.
Part of the arc's conclusion is how the two siblings go on vacation after the fact, a joke that takes some weight off the situation in my opinion. The true conclusion of the arc shows Shinpachi reviving the dojo by teaching the homeless, but later we see that this doesn't hold up over time either, so the whole arc ends up feeling kind of pointless in regards to his character development.
Tumblr media
Something similar happens in the Correspondence arc, in which Kirara is introduced. Here they both pretend to be someone else when they meet, however, in the end they show themselves as they are, realizing that they’ve many things in common. It always seemed like a very nice thing to me, so I regretted the fact that Kirara didn’t appear again.
This wasn’t only because it was an important lesson for him to learn, but also because it would’ve been interesting to add another layer as Shinpachi's love interest. I don't mean including Kirara in the main cast, but keeping her present through the letters she would write to Shinpachi and bringing her back from time to time would’ve been enough.
Nevertheless, I consider the biggest problem occurred at the end of the series. Shinpachi was slowly but surely becoming an independent character. However, in the ending he’s shown to be unable to move on if he’s not with Gintoki by his side. And don’t get me wrong, I'm not trying to say that it's wrong that Shinpachi is very fond of Gintoki.
Nor it’s bad per se that he wants to be with the Yorozuya. It's about how it was shown. It appears that Shinpachi never followed his own dream. Restoring the dojo was something his sister wanted to do, not him. In the time skip he’s already an adult of 18 years. Staying in the Yorozuya seemed more like the need to remain in a shelter to avoid going out and having to face the world.
I would’ve liked to see that at the end of the series, someone who feels they’ve no control over his life would decide his own path. For someone with an inferiority complex to feel self-confident. Since the first prototype of the character was Nagakura Shinpachi, the captain of the second Shinsengumi squad, I would’ve loved Shinpachi to join the Shinsengumi, taking advantage of his leadership skills.

A Gintama episode a day keeps the ending away…Episode 158
Episode Title: If A Friend Gets Injured, Take Him To The Hospital, Stat! (lol, like that was going to ever happen considering what was at stake in this case)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MY 17 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN EPISODE 158 (manga chap 240):
Tumblr media
1) Mako-chan’s cameo! (and Sadaharu’s as well)
Tumblr media
2) Tosshi’s little giggle at around the 5:09 mark.
Tumblr media
3) I just want to thank the anime director for focusing on Tosshi Hijikata’s chest during his monologue for no good reason other than why the hell not.
Tumblr media
4) Another nice view, and again, can’t believe I love seeing that man smoke so damn much.
Tumblr media
5) Caged Tosshi looking all sexy dangerous.
Tumblr media
6) Hijikata’s Evangelion-inspired slide show. Someone on the anime staff obviously loves Evangelion since that was not in the manga (then again, who doesn’t love NGE).
Tumblr media
7) Those guns.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8) Really wish they fought part of the battle in this style mode cuz it looked so gorgeous.
Tumblr media
9) This family’s reaction to the shit-eating talk was HILARIOUS.
Tumblr media
10) I usually do not like scatalogical humor, but this was so beyond gross that it somehow magically came back around to being funny again (and in case you can’t remember, Gin-chan is referring to Otsuu’s shit. Literally)
Tumblr media
11) Their hero pose…even though they’ve just being talking about eating someone’s poop.
Tumblr media
12) I appreciated Kagura-chan’s singing even though Gintoki clearly didn’t.
Tumblr media
13) Look how into it she is! SHE’S SO CUTE!!
Tumblr media
14) This pretty lady was not in the manga and I appreciate her inclusion in the episode. Must be one of Saigou’s gals.
Tumblr media
15) Shinpachi being carelessly brutal towards poor Takachin.
Tumblr media
16) I wish I could’ve been more upset about Takachin being run over by a car, but I was too busy being happy about seeing Sougo dressed up as a Tsusengumi member.
Tumblr media
17) I wish I could’ve been more upset about Takachin being dead and dragged around a la Weekend at Bernie’s, but I was too busy being happy about seeing Yamazaki dressed up as a Tsusengumi member.
SHIPS TALLY:
Shinpachi x Otsuu: I know it’s mostly 100% in his imagination but out of respect for Pachi-kun, I will always include his ship.
Tumblr media
Shinpachi x Hijikata: interesting that Shinpachi knew Hijikata so well that he was able to see through his ruse.
Tumblr media
Shinpachi x Takachin: dear sweet Takachin. Shinpachi doesn’t deserve him sometimes.
Tumblr media
Gintoki x Takachin: I thought it was sweet how complimentary and supportive Gin-chan was of Takachin’s more prominent feature. I choose to believe he was being sincere.
Tumblr media
Gintoki x Kagura: even though Gintoki was clearly not a fan of Kagura’s super cute singing, I thought their interactions were still adorable.

Gintama: Review de episodios -Parte 6-
Episodio 25:
No frieguen.
Tumblr media
Y lo mejor, obviamente, estos dos monstruos. Las verdaderas generales de la cacerola:
Tumblr media
Ay, qué buen episodio, diablos.
Episodio 26:
Me gusta.
Tumblr media
***Hasegawa no debería dejarle a la Yorozuya nada a cargo. En serio que no.
Tumblr media
Episodio 27:
Mataron a Kidomaru… Realmente lo mataron.
Tumblr media

you might think that me, a shinpachi fan, would actually really love the beam saber arc huh?
i have mixed feelings about it
mostly because obi-one is the “remember the new guy” trope, where he’s never been mentioned before, OR EVEN AFTER this entire arc. feels a little like they needed to give pachi some true pain or something
i dont mind seeing the shimuras having an attachment to someone that gin and kagura aren’t acquainted with, i think it’s a very neat dynamic. shinpachi’s wish of having his two brother figures meeting also hits like gin wanting to show shoyo his new family.
maybe im not a star wars fan
maybe i dont like “dont cry, smile to hide it” theme. maybe i read the theme wrong and he really meant “smile after youre done being sad” but thats not how it was presented to me
also the brothers term was thrown around a bit too much. i dont really like when they use labels for the yorozuya (even kagura BF arc) i just like when they love each other a lot
the macadamia nuts being a run on gag was... an interesting way to end the arc. i do think its funny but it kinda feels like you can never ever really take the shimuras seriously

Takachin appears in episode 26. Kyuubei isn't even a glint in Sorachi's eye and Hachibei is already here. Shinpachi/Takachin truthers we must rise. Of all the reunited childhood friends that you can ship in Gintama they are not the coolest but they are the absolute biggest losers and I think that's what makes it compelling. They're in loser love with each other. I know it.
He's really like. Takasugi and Zura and kyuubei coded in certain ways but in a way that matches Shinpachi's megaloser energy. I love it.

Note
One of the inconsistencies in Tae's characterization imo is that during the Beam Saber arc, Shinpachi claims that she hasn't given a damn about the dojo for over 200 episodes. It feels like she's there in the story but doesn't really do anything, not even contributing to her own goals.
But in beam saber she explained that she’s was still saving up/ or has already saved enough right? How is that not consistent? Moreover i do not think her always being busy with cabaret club, being greedy with money and occasionally gorging on ice cream take away from her goals of saving up to revive the dojo. In fact her side hustles and occasional forays into luxury support her end goals even more.
“It feels like she’s there in the story but she doesn’t really do anything, not even contributing to her own goals.”
...are you sure? Is Otae living in her own way true to herself not helping the story at all? Isn’t it because she was who she was that some parts of Gintama are actually going forward arc-wise? (Takachin arc, Ski resort, farewell shinsengumi, cult arc, benizakura arc, soul switch arc, silver soul arc, etc.). It’s because of the solidity of her base character that the ending of some arcs are already hinted at the beginning of the arc (see ryugujou, kintama, etc.) Maybe she’s not as gung-ho as other fighters but the consistency in most of her writing affects the story more ways than what one normally sees.
Throughout the series (like before beam saber) Otae’s done nothing but look for ways to get even more money and get ahead in everything. (Lady Yagami arc is the most prominent arc iirc). In that regard I do not see inconsistency. I do not mind that she does not always remind watchers of the dojo thing. As long as we see her always busy and working her ass off and also occasionally imparting bushido wisdom to shinpachi/gintoki/kagura, we know ultimately what her end goals are.
Anon maybe you are expecting too much from her? Like for real did you really want to see her mention “I wanna revive the dojo” everytime she appeared? Won’t people get tired of that?
And like... Otae yknow... the dojo wasn’t her only priority as the story progressed. In time Yorozuya became important to her, the cabaret club became important to her, gradually Snack Otose squad became important to her, Otose herself became important to her, then finally Kabukichou became important to her. As the show went on Otae’s circle of friends grew. The people who cared about her and believed in her grew. If her scope of care and influence had gone beyond the dojo, isn’t that proof that she’s always been pursuing her own desires and doing what she wants? That she’s stepping into her potential?
Or are you the type who thinks that just because she is Yorozuya then she isn’t pursuing her own goals? Well I hate to break it to you, but Gintoki and her always ask assistance from each other regardless of the initial intended outcome. (Cabaret club arc, lady yagami arc, hdz idol 48 arc, group date arc, love chorris arc, stalker arc, panty thief arc, correspondence arc, new four devas, etc.)
Gintoki does what he wants when it’s her request and Otae does what she wants when Gintoki asks stuff from her. And when she watches over Yorozuya in the later episodes it was because she already acknowledged Gintoki as “their leader” as early as Kintama arc. She even went above and beyond expectations by bringing them all back together.
Ofc anon we can always agree to disagree on this thing. But this is the way I see her as a character. She’s a lot more selfish and independent than you are implying. She’s been acting on her own, growing on her own, outside and together with Shinpachi and Yorozuya since Lesson One. (They share common interests often though but that just shows how similar she is with Gintoki and the rest of the team.)
If there is an inconsistency with Otae, I think it would be her behavior in Kyuubei’s birthday party IMO. Up till now I still dont get why she didnt fight/talk back at the people who knocked her down. At that point I actually didn’t expect her to succumb to social norms that easily. Maybe some of those guests were patrons in the cabaret club? Maybe she didn’t want the elites to think badly of Kyuubei for having low class samurai friends? Was she faking it? Is she only unhinged when it comes to people who are her stalkers or the same and below her in social caste? Was that a forceful reminder to the classism in edo period?
That’s the only time when I thought her behavior was a bit off. Honestly I don’t know. If someone can give me an explanation of why she was like that in that arc, then let me know.
