I am a fan since: 2017, I got it for Christmas in 2016 so I always just say '17

Favorite Game of the series: By virtue of simply replaying it the most, three. I really love the combat in it so I've played it near thirty times? But all time fave would have to 1 because of the aesthetic, tone, and story. There's something about first discovering a world which is what me1 is about.

MShep or Femshep? Gotta go with Femshep. I have played both, its just hard to capture the male shepard image I have in my head in the character creator so Femshep it is.

Earthborn, Colonist, or Spacer: earthborn! My main Shepard Jenn is earthborn so that's what I'm going with. Though, I have numerous Shepard's are various background combinations. I have feelings about each background trust me

Biotics or tech: Both! Though I really do love biotics, you can do some cool stuff with them, setting up and detonating both biotic and tech explosions.

Paragon or Renegade: I have to repeat what nowandthane said, paragon choices, renegade dialogue.

Favorite Class: Sentinel. I love the versatility of the class, but I do have an affection for Infiltrator because that's what got me through me2 on insanity.

Favorite Companion: Tali. By story value, Javik. He's like one of the most important characters

Least Favorite Companion: Javik, throw your attitude out the airlock. IM JOKING! (he has every reason to be like he is. I love him very much) Liara is my answer though only because I don't like some of the story choices the devs did with her. (ex: why does she have Shepard's armor in a display case when i didn't even romance her??? I can't mention this at all??)

My squad selection: For Jenn's playthrough: Wrex/Tali in me1. Garrus/Mordin/Miranda generally in me2. Thane and Miranda/Samara for the collector base. Kaidan/Javik/James in me3. Of course, I mix it up based on story aspects and the difficulty settings. But me3 is pretty fixed bc I always play on insanity.

Favorite in-game Romance: Tali and Garrus. I'm a sucker for awkward, wet cat of a man like Garrus is. But Tali's romance man.... her parting line to Shepard during the beam run "I have a home" makes me insane actually

Other pairings I like: Obligatory Nihlus/Shepard/Kal (and the duos within in this throuple) mention here. Other than that, Joker/Miranda and Joker/James, Ashley/Garrus, and Shepard/Wrex, I could list a whole lot so I'll keep it to those ships lol

Favorite NPC: Nihlus and Kal'Reegar for sure. Victus and of course Niftu Cal our favorite biotic god.

Favorite Antagonist: Saren. He's the best one that we get in all three games (Harby could have been number one if they did anything with him in three but that's a rant for another time lmao)

Favorite Mission: Haestrom/Tali's Loyalty mission because that's when I get to see Kal <3 and blow up a colossus with the Cain. Also, the Collector Ship mission I have to mention because it's frankly the only mission besides the two previously stated where I've loaded up the save to play it on insanity when I'm bored. It's fun. Of course, this is with the Infiltrator.

Favorite Loyalty Mission: Tali for numerous reasons. Kal mention here. But I love the insight into Quarian culture we get. Also we see that fire in her when she's talking to the Board which I always appreciate. Along with her dialogue at the end, "I got better, Shepard. I got you." and then on the ship afterwards, "I don't think life is about what we deserve." I love her so much.

Favorite DLC: Leviathan. Only because of the horror aspect.

Control, Sythesis, or Destroy? Destroy. I have so many issues with the ending and that's the least worst option in my opinion so. (I too ignore that it wipes out the Geth and Edi fuck that)

Favorite Weapon: The M-90 Cain or the M-99 Saber aka the "Big Iron". Lancer in three was my favorite weapon before I found the Saber. Special mention to my bud the Mattock, I have been convinced of its glory. I do not think the Harrier is better anymore lol which my brother would be happy to hear

Favorite Place: me1 Citadel my BELOVED.

5. Do you respond to comments?

I've been trying to more recently! But I'm not always great at it. At the very least when someone comments something detailed and thoughtful I try to reply - those comments always mean a lot to me.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Not fully intentionally but the place @holdsteady and I left our collaborative fic How to Live Here was basically right after a massive fight/breakup between characters that we fully planned to resolve and then just.... never did. Oops. Surprisingly, people are very rarely mean to us about this.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Probably Body Language? Very much intended to have that one wrapped up with a bow.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not in a long time. Last time I really did was on some of my Life is Strange fics (either homophobic hate or bc i was writing a ship people didn't like).

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yeah! Femslash only.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I sometimes joke about/hc elaborate crossovers when I'm watching stuff with my friends, but I don't really have any interest in writing any. Or reading any, really, for that matter.

Yeah! Had one of my LiS fics translated to Vietnamese. That was cool.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yeah! I co-wrote How to Live Here with my best friend @holdsteady! That's the only one that's been published, at least. @nataliving adn @jewishsuperfam and i have worked on some stuff together too and that's been fun :)

14. What's your all time favorite ship?

I don't know if I actually can pick one but honest Buffy/Faith are all-timers and absolutely formative. Second to that would be Rachel/Max/Chloe from Life is Strange.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

God, How to Live Here absolutely haunts me. There's a few Mass Effect ones (Shepard/Liara arranged marriage AU and my Jack/Miranda series) that I would love to finish but probably never will. Those are the ones that probably have the most written for them that I just haven't wrapped up.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm good at a lot of it! I write pretty good smut, I'm good at character voice, I think my writing is pretty readable

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Actually writing lmao. I struggle with coming up with workable ideas. I intimidate myself out of projects a lot. I fall off stuff kinda easy too tbh. And I'm TERRIBLE at writing alone - for anything bigger than a oneshot I need someone to hype me up and hold my hand through it or else I get bored or lose confidence :?

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Generally in favor of skipping the google translate stuff. It's usually pretty whack

Technically digimon when i was a little kid and before I even knew what fanfic was. First i posted was Danny Phantom

I think Body Language is probably my best fic but for sentimental reasons I really love How to Live Here, since i wrote it with my best friend.

Least favourite Companion: Don't really have any bc I love them all, might have to say Jacob just bc of how bioware wrote him, and hes mean to tali, garrus and thane... and the fact he can cheat on you??? But its not fair, its not his fault they made his character like that. He deserved better. :/ (and also Liara SORRY just mainly bc of how much she is shoved into everything)

My squad selection: I have a soft spot of garrus & tali since you can have them in every game! but otherwise I mostly pick whoever would be good on the mission...

Favourite In-game romance: Garrus is what got me into Mass Effect but I dunno, I enjoy a lot of them. Jack and Thane's are very sweet, i'm a bit partial to Miranda bc she's my fav girl. Oh of course how can I forget Samantha, i love hers a lot!! Probably between her and Garrus!

Other pairings I like: Oh geez we will be here forever if i list them. But also I like almost everyone together lol. some top picks are Joker x Edi, Miranda x Jack, Shepard x Wrex, and Shepard x Legion of course lol

2023 Year-End Fic Round Up

Words written (published or not, WIPs totally count too!): I'll just note my published count, since I don't feel like counting up all my WIPs and paused WIPs, which is 116,111. A whole lot more than I thought lol

Smut scenes written (if applicable): Again, going off of published works: 5 (I think) which is way more than I ever expected, and I find it very fun to write. Just need to actually write my triad(s) together instead of just couples at one point...

New things I tried: This whole fic writing thing is new to me, so technically everything, especially more explicit scenes.

Fic I spent the most time on: feeling numb, lost in time, my Regis and Kaidan ME2 reunion fic. Took me ages to write, one of my longest word counts, and is probably one of my favorites just because of how much it fixes some of the many, many problems I have with ME2.

Fic I spent the least time on: temptations, I wrote it like in a day, and it was also the first time I just wrote PWP. I can never look at Zaeed's ME3 cameo the same ever again lol.

Favorite thing I wrote: Just one? Hmm... don't ask about ryuusei. Again, turning some things I wasn't a fan of in ME3 into my own preferred thing, filled with Masshenko goodness, Zaeed and Kaidan rescuing Regis, and Regis being a snarky shit to Joker, which is always fun.

Favorite thing I read: Easy. Situational Awareness by @threewhiskeylunch. It led me to shipping Regis/Zaeed/Kaidan together and I wouldn't have it any other way. Just a fun, lovely fic with great art too.

Writing goals for next year: Try to develop Nyx Shepard some more and write more of Regis's ME2 canon (such exactly as what establishes the lack of Liara in ME3 and maybe some more insight into his indifference of Vakarian, Grunt, and Legion aka his suicide mission deaths, as well as Arrival and all that fun stuff) and how I want to approach some parts of ME3. Also, I want to explore more of my Subject Zero!Kaidan AU and getting something more substantial for that. A lot of goals lol.

B A C K S T O R Y

Dani is the daughter of a single mother (Maeva) in the Outer City and some deadbeat bard dad who she's never met and doesn't care to meet. Her mother works as a seamtress and laundress now, but she was a barmaid at a tavern when she met Dani's father. Maeva was still working as a barmaid (this time with a very young infant daughter) when she crossed paths with Brannon Rufford, the human leader of a small band called the Merry Rovers.

Brann's wife, also a Rover, went into labor while they were performing at Maeva's tavern. Maeva helped a little with the birth, but Brann's wife died. She agreed to look after the baby, named Liara, while Brann worked to get enough money to support and feed her. Ever since then, Brann and Liara have considered themselves family with Maeva and Dani.

Though Brann eventually took to roving and barding again once Liara was old enough to join him, he and Liara continued to return again and again to drop in on Maeva and Dani. When Dani was 10, she met her new best friend, a dragonborn bard named Paraxxel who was performing as a street drummer when he got jumped by a small gang. (I have a fic about this lol) She convinced him to join up with Brann and Liara as part of their band. Later, a half-elf named Kellen joined up too (and Liara instantly fell in love with him and swore she'd marry him).

When Dani was around 15, her mother took seriously ill and was bed-ridden for weeks. She worked as best she could to afford healing costs for her mother, but it wasn't enough. Her mother's legs are now permanently weakened and she requires a healer to help restore some vitality to them about once a month.

Because of this, Dani begged to join the Merry Rovers, as they would make more money than she could alone or working as a laundress. Maeva reluctantly agreed, and for the last ten years Dani has been wandering with the Merry Rovers as their main fiddle player, sending money back to her mother as often as she can and thoroughly enjoying the rover's life. To her, the Rovers are as much her family as her own flesh-and-blood mother.

She was out roving and performing with them the day she was taken by the nautiloid. Paraxxel was snatched too. If Dani were a companion and not the player character, part of her questline would be trying to find Paraxxel and rescue him from being a slave of the Absolute.

She’d never officially learned how to warp something. She’d tried, obviously, back in the Alliance. She’d drill all day until she would collapse on the ground, had to be spoon fed electrolyte water mixed with protein powder until she at least got the energy to vomit the sludge up. There was just something that never clicked, she could never figure it out. 

Until now. She knew exactly what was missing. 

Fucking vengeance. 

She channeled her biotic field in the dead center of the krogan’s chest. She imagined ripping his gullet open and filling it with acid. He stopped in his tracks, as if he were put in a stasis. But blood started to pool from his chest. She felt a tug pulling at her jaw, threatening to throw her forward. But she kept going, kept finding every little nerve and blood capsule in the krogan’s body and dismantling it. He fell to his knees and she rose to her feet. Her ears were roaring, her chest was tightening and tightening, but she didn’t dare stop because if she stopped then Garrus would be in danger-- 

“Shepard!” She vaguely heard Garrus call her name, but he was entirely in another plane of existence. The krogan was still moving, his eyelids still fluttered, his limbs still convulsed. It wasn’t enough, it was never enough. She extended out her other arm, she imagined her biotic forces forming into a javelin that would strike his chest and tear him apart, tear him in half, tear him like she tied his limbs to threshers and made them pull him until he was nothing more than blood and guts-- 

“Shepard!” Garrus took her shoulders in his hands. She dropped the krogan instantly, meeting his eyes. And for the first time, when Garrus looked at her, she saw fear. Genuine fear. Shepard took a gulping, quivering breath. Her head pounded like the worst hangover she’d ever experienced in her life, her teeth chattered. “He’s dead, okay! You can stop now, he’s dead.” 

She dared to look down at the krogan. He looked as though his entire body had been leached from blood, pooling around him as if his body were suddenly poisonous. Shepard did that. Shepard did that. She wanted to throw up, she wanted to laugh, she wanted to curl up and cry under her sheets. 

“Fuck,” she whispered to herself, her voice sounding unfamiliar to her own ears. 

“Since when have you been able to warp something like that?” Garrus asked incredulously, a hint of awe in his voice. 

“I-- I’ve never…” She felt as though someone had replaced her brain with sand, and it was pouring out of her eyes and her ears and her nose. Bile rose in her throat, she forced herself to swallow it down. 

“Crap, Del, why did you choose now to test it out?” 

Shepard looked at Garrus. The fear, the trepidation hadn’t entirely left his expression. What could she say? Garrus was in danger, that krogan was going to kill him? She wouldn't let anything bad happen to him, not after all of this time. So what if she molecularly decimated a lumbering alien at point-blank range? Garrus was okay, he was alive, he was breathing-- 

“I just…” she gave a little shake of her head. “I just did.” 

Garrus swallowed, not breaking eye contact with Shepard. He took a step towards her and cupped her face in his hands. His hands were so big, his palms rested entirely on her cheeks, his thumbs on her jaw. She could feel his subvocals from his touch, she was desperate to know what they meant. For a wild moment, Shepard thought he was about to kiss her. Surrounded by a pile of dead bodies, Fist waiting for them in his backrooms, and Garrus Vakarian was about to kiss her--

But he just traced a finger gingerly underneath both of her eyes. “Your eyes are bleeding…” he whispered, almost so quietly she couldn’t hear it. She squeezed them, feeling the blood inch down her cheeks. They didn’t feel any different than tears.

🧡 - Favorite non-Shepard pairings? Why do you love this/those pairing(s)?

🎗️- Something you would have liked to see more of in the games?

Fave pairings> Kolfer and Kriortez, aka Kolyat x Feron, and Thane Krios x Steve Cortez. (Also Pavan and Mickey, which are two total OC's, Blaise Shepard's dads.) They are all heavy headcanoning, I think that's what appeals to me about rarepairs so much though. You've got some bare bones to work with and then can adapt the stories and flesh out the characters to fit your own tastes. I'll try to give a brief overview. kolFer is: tall pouty prickly lad who is an introverted nerd annoyed to find he's fallen for the charms of short muscly extroverted flirty king, even more shocked to discover Feron isn't just a big old flirt but genuinely adores the ever loving shit out of him and they fall wildly in love. The more Kol pouts, the more Fer loves him. They work together as agents of the shadowbroker Liara. Kriortez: No one will ever sum it up better than @zet-sway did: "I'm just imagining their relationship. Both of them, professional as fuck. House is impeccably clean. They're well spoken and dependable. And the moment their spark is lit they're on each other like white on rice, handprints on the windshield, clothes on the floor, [redacted to keep this SFW lol] Heart eyes for days." I actually spend way more time thinking about non Shepard pairings than I do Shepard pairings. Like don't get me wrong I adore Shepard and my two Keahi and Blaise are my special blorbos, but I think the freedom of having less strict storyline beats with KolFer lets my imagination really go down a rabbithole (which is also probably why my Shepards are both pretty AU compared to the games). Something I'd like to see more of? More interactions that don't involve the main character. Those moments in 3 where you'd find squadmates chatting. The conversations in the rover in andromeda. All the interesting NPC's on the citadel. That stuff sparks the imagination and fleshes out the world so much and I love it, can't get enough, and would love to see more. Especially with the less explored species. Give me that juicy hanar lore, some elcor drama. A world that adapts and changes over time is always incredible too, though I know engine limitations are a thing. The more I think about this whole description the more insane I get:

Okay! So! One by one:

I just really hate how this is phrased and the word choices in general, but I’m gonna hone in on that parenthetical clause: “commanders who dare to duel.”

Who? Which commander? Because Commander Shepard never dueled Kaidan.

They had a duel/fisticuffs with James. They had a stand-off with Kaidan. But they never dueled Kaidan.

When did they duel Kaidan, Bioware? I would remember if they dueled. I would not shut up about it if they dueled.

I am just fascinated by putting cold one in scare quotes. Like that’s special Mass Effect slang for a beer, and not like... a general colloquialism in the States (and maybe Canada? Canadians let me know.)

(Although if its strictly a States thing that may go a long way to explaining why it’s in quotes.)

Also gotta make sure this ad copy is strictly profesh for our collectible statue of a video game man. Don’t want to get too familiar with potential buyers.

I’m not going to go too into this since this is what our little corner of mini-fandom has been focusing on, many others have pointed out the ridiculousness of this.

I will just reiterate what I’ve said elsewhere: whoever wrote this skimmed the fan wiki entry for Kaidan. That is the only explanation I can think of for why they’d name drop a character he mentions twice in the first game, and who is never seen on screen and is mentioned once outside of those particular conversations, if you happen to make the choices to get that dialogue line.

Like the writer was stumped for stuff to put in this description, hopped to the wiki, skimmed the entry about his early life, “oh he loved Rahna, I’ll put that in there, see boss I totally how to weave in game details,” and called it a day. Because I don’t know about you, but if the world was ending around me and I had to fight cyborg zombies all day, I’d be thinking about my high school crush.

The truly baffling thing is this should have been a layup. “His eyes are lost in thought, perhaps about a certain commander....” BOOM! The Shenkos would eat that right up. Particularly since who the fuck else is spending $125 USD on this? You can lean into the romance options on character merch if they’re a romance option. It’d be like if Thane’s body pillow’s description talked about how he missed Irika. Sure, yes, but maybe don’t mention it on the thing you’re selling to people who like to pretend to smooch on him?

Damn I lied, I did go too into this.

I don’t know if that has a special name or not, I’m not about that life.

What I AM about are tiny little details like this. You can put Kaidan in that outfit with mods, and he does look good, but that’s not “his” outfit. Hell, his outfit isn’t really “his”, it’s the default casual look for most of the Alliance characters.

It’s not that I don’t like the outfit. I mind that the copy says they’re recreating it “to perfection” and it’s not even his.

Anyway I have had a total of 10 hours of sleep over the last two days (work stuff - don’t ask) and am going to try to rectify that now that this is out of my system. Apologies for grammar/spelling mistakes, again, 10 hours of sleep over two days.

The first character I first fell in love with: Ashley! Imagine my disappointment when F!Shepard couldn’t romance her. I fell hard.The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Saren. I didn’t think much of him at first, aside from “bad guy to stop”, but a few replays got me thinking about him. He’s an intriguing villain and I like the cat and mouse.The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Garrus and Liara tbh. If they’re the most popular character in a BioWare game, odds are good that I’m burnt out on them and those two are no exception.The character I love that everyone else hates: Ashley and Miranda. If I had a dollar for every time I had to read hate about them, I would still be bitter but at least I’d be rich.The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Garrus and Liara for the same “I’m burnt out of seeing the same favorites everywhere” reasons. And I could rant about my issues w their writing, but that’s another post tbh.The character I would totally smooch: Ashley and Miranda. :^D Girlfriend goals tbh, maybe it’s a good thing F!Shep can’t romance them. ashley is the best way for me to reveal regis lore tbh. kaidan knows too much, I have yet to write zaeed's POV, and I feel like ash as the best friend would be a good sounding board for this stuff as she slowly learns more about him.

kaidan's "mission" is overlord. ashley's is X-57. happens sometime during ME2-ish. I feel like it was a good mission for her for a lot of reasons. her being in command of a small team. high stakes with a lot of different outcomes. civilians to balance along with the duty of "justice." ash leans more renegade in my canon (and well, so does kaidan for agreeing to condemn the council and being willing to 'press the button' instead of regis), so I figured she would be the person to make that hard choice to get rid of balak then and there.

regis would too, despite his typical code.

the marred line is a fave of mine too. they all have scars, some more than others.

remembering the good times and the bad... I love the wall and the conversations around it. a good contrast for regis's outward exterior. you wouldn't expect him to care so much, but he does. and that's what sometimes bothers him about the cerberus ship. was he too harsh? could he have been a better person?

wren will definitely fuck you up. one thing I want to write after I eventually finish the LOTSB write-up is all the dossiers (or at least modified ones) and how she approaches them. she's a good person who cares for her friends... but she's not afraid to ruin and use her resources to her advantage, as she should as the broker... side eyeing liara for the hundredth time.

yep ash will definitely speak her mind and wants to help. regis respects that. he wanted to talk to someone that wasn't his lovers, and well, he remembered her religious beliefs and sought a little comfort in that. trusting her to say something that could help ease the mind a bit.

hannah's so complicated I love her. and so is regis. again, I've realized that kaidan's talked to her more than regis has in my fics lmao.

lol kaidan is allergic to wearing shirts. I just find it a funny quirk of his that I yanked from bioware being dumb in his hospital scene. plus it's fun to imagine. what can I say I like alenko buff lol.

zaeed's friendship with ash appearing again! letting kaidan take the reigns a bit on comforting regis while he talks to ash about what she learned. and tbh I'm too lazy to make hot chocolate with milk so I gave that to zaeed lol. it's the thought that counts ;)

ME3 is hard to write tbh because there's so much shit going on but regis is definitely at his most renegade overall. so he's making hard choices and dealing with it, and zaeed hates to see it because the galaxy keeps using him over and over. they'll all be happy to see regis get some rest.

and well, he does. becoming an N instructor... helping with kaidan's academy... opening a biotic program with miranda and vik... but we have a lot to get through before he does <3

Description: ME3 ERA--Ashley stumbles upon Regis after dealing with some inner turmoil of her own.

Pairings: Regis Shepard/Kaidan Alenko/Zaeed Massani

Note: been in a slump for a while...but I found myself a little rejuvenated after writing in Ashley's POV again.

Many things could be said about Regis Shepard. Butcher of Torfan. Savior of the Citadel. Destroyer of the Collectors.

To some, even a traitor to the Alliance, even after returning the SR-2 with a dossier full of Cerberus secrets. A condemner of the Council after his actions after the Battle of the Citadel. For every good title, Regis has another worse one lurking underneath.

He almost seems to carry both sides proudly.

To his crew, they never saw him as those titles after shaking off the first initial impressions, getting used to having Commander Shepard as their superior officer. Always surprised at his occasional openness around the crew, memorizing their names, their home planets, their hobbies... preferred shifts and foods, even going so far as to find out if they want to join him for biotic drills if they were attuned as such.

Out on the field, he turned into something else. An aura of command that made everyone want to stand to attention even if ordered to be at ease. A ruthlessness tinged by his glowing eyes and scars, a demon out in the field. Purple biotics a sign of his arrival, ripping through anyone and anything in their path if he deemed it a threat. Obey or die. Crafting alliances and leaving bodies in his path, Reapers and indoctrinated Cerebrus souls no match for him and his forward squads.

But sometimes, late at night, he could be seen standing in front of the memorial wall. Or he'll sit cross legged in front of it, sipping on tea with a book--an honest to God paper book.

Those nights were rare. Some considered them rumors, fake, people trying to stir up trouble on skeleton crew nights.

Ashley knew better. A heart hidden underneath, gleaming gold in the right light. He cared, oh, he cared so much.

Ashley found him one such night, coming up from cargo where she destroyed one of Vega's bags, her body aching under her exertion. Nightmares about X-57. About Balak surviving and still committing atrocities while those civilians burned from her choice.

"Hey, Skipper," she said, cracking her knuckles as she exited the elevator. "Out here on your own?" This was the first night Kaidan was back on board. Hell, some of the crew even picked up on Regis's happier attitude, finally whole again. She figured they would be... celebrating.

Adams will probably put that board up again if he hasn't already. Their resident L2 biotics cause so many sensor issues on a good day.

Even the whole common area was empty. Usually there's at least a few crewmembers about. A couple of marines standing guard in case something happens--what happened for Regis to become so damn paranoid?

Perhaps this is the time to ask.

He closed his book after dog-earing a page. "Yeah."

One word responses. Even from him, that wasn't good.

"Want a friend?"

He inclined his head, which she took as a yes.

She sat down next to him, crossing her legs, saying nothing at first, offering a silent companionship. Part of this felt like some nights on the SR-1, where someone will be up late and inevitably it seemed like someone else would join them. Regis's insomnia was sometimes at it worst during their first mission, and she would run into him often.

She often thought about one such conversation they had where Regis told her about his father's ring. About his recommendations for her.

About Eden Prime.

She and Kaidan sat vigil together many moments after Virmire. After Alchera when they could. Thinking about what they lost. Thinking about what could've been.

A few moments passed in silence.

Her gaze turned to the wall, scanning over the names. This wasn't her first time spending a few moments in front of it, lamenting the dead. Friends from the SR-1. Tanaka, who shared her love for literature, swapping recommendations as they found the time. Pakti, who gave her some tips on how to best mod shotguns. Laflamme, who loved sparring and a good cup of tea.

Newton, Bryant, Chi, Porter... the marines who died in Regis's attempt to save them both.

There were times when she saw her own name up there. She and Kaidan never talked about it. They never will. But, if Regis didn't see Virmire as a winning scenario, she may not have made it off that damn planet.

Is that something she's made peace with? That answer to herself changes all the time.

Some names she didn't fully recognize. They were emblazed with yellow, not the silver of the SR-1 crew. They may have been crewmembers that lost their lives when the Normandy flew under Cerberus's colors. Regis never talked much about his time under their command. It may have been his ship, but she knew he was never in charge.

Killing him every second he was on board.

Three of them belonged to those that lost their lives on his suicide mission. Those she heard about even less, only knowing them because EDI elaborated on them when she asked. A krogan grown to be a genetically perfect soldier, a new destiny. A geth that allied itself with them.

A turian that was almost a part of their crew on the hunt against Saren.

All EDI said regarding them and Regis were that they were never close. Disagreed with some more often than not, but still considered them key parts of the puzzle against the Collectors.

"I didn't take the time to learn much about the Cerberus crew," Regis said after a long sigh. "Sure, I knew their names. 'Ranks.' Designations. Skills. Talents. All the shit I'm obligated to know. But I didn't know them like I did with the SR-1. Couldn't tell you their dreams or their families or their favorite goddamn vid."

"What happened to them?" She asked first.

"There was a mission that needed all of our attention. Normally, I don't send the full crew out. Too risky. But EDI got a signal of something that seemed like another Reaper corpse, this time planet side. So, I called everyone in. All twelve of them. Took our shuttle down. Before we knew it, it was nothing. A fucking trap so the Collectors could board our ship."

That explains the marines.

"They wanted my crew specially, I'm sure, but all of us went down. When we came back, Moreau was the only one left after he and EDI took back the ship. They took the bodies too," Regis said, his voice flat. "Only found out exactly who we lost after Mordin escorted the crew back to the ship. If we didn't attack the base as soon as we did... I may have had no one to save."

Even thinking about hypotheticals. Something must really be bothering him. Normally he's the type to live and let live, never dwelling on what could've been.

"But you did. You succeeded," she said. "I can't imagine what you went through on that damn mission."

He clenched his jaw, his eyes narrowing. "I did what I could. It was a success in nearly every definition of the word."

Nearly.

She didn't point out his word choice, sensing a sore spot. "And it got you back to the Alliance. That's the real success."

"Was it? You and I both know the mission Kaidan and I went on before I was officially back."

The Alpha Relay. Hackett's request for a stealthy mission to save a key asset that turned into far more.

Sometimes she thinks about Kaidan and wonders how he decided he was going to be the one to condemn the lives in Bahak.

And she worries about the few she condemned on X-57.

No, that's not fair. None of them should have to make the hard choices like that, no matter how many lives could be at stake.

Regis and Kaidan both made that choice. But she knew Kaidan pressed that goddamn button.

He was quieter now. Even more in control of his perfect Alliance Golden Boy persona.

They all were marred with something now.

"You're still here," she said. "Don't tell me you want to undo Wren's work in keeping that off of both your records."

A sharp laugh escaped him. Bitter, dry, mocking. "No, I'd rather not incur the wrath of our dear Broker."

Just ask him, goddammit.

She turned to face him, and he raised an eyebrow, seemingly aware of what she was going to ask. "You can tell me to fuck off and I will, but what's really going on? You aren't yourself."

She racked her mind for something, anything that could've gotten him in such a dark mood. The date seemed insignificant, he was celebrating the arrival of Kaidan back on the ship, and nothing seemed wrong earlier when discussing their next move.

"You got me," he said, letting out a breath. "Normally, this day doesn't bother me. But today was the day my father died."

Shit. She had no idea.

Unsure if she should apologize or not, she opened her mouth, but he beat her to it. "Don't bother. It's in the past."

"Even so, it's clearly bothering you. Would Adrian want to--"

"No," he interrupted with a finality. "Not him, nor Vik. Vik didn't even know Atlas anyway, but they'll be busy with Adrian. I've already took them both off shift since we won't be able to visit Earth and his gravestone."

Another piece of the puzzle.

"I'm sorry," she said, leaning in closer to him. To her surprise, he didn't push her away, putting his head on her shoulder. She pulled him in. "A tradition?"

"Kinda."

Back to the one word answers.

"You could create a new one," she suggested, but carefully. Not wanting to butt in with advice if that wasn't what he wanted.

"Maybe. Last time we were still on Earth, so we all went. Me, Hannah, and Adrian. While we were prepping for the Reapers..." He trailed off. "Didn't enjoy seeing my headstone there, but it was good updating him on all the crazy shit in my life."

At her look, he continued. "We got it removed. Slipped through the fucking cracks after I came back, but then again..." He trailed off again, and her mind helpfully filled in the blanks.

He may have needed that headstone if his mission failed.

"I wanted to take Zaeed and Kaidan with me, but Zee was out gathering allies and Kaidan was with his spec ops squad. With them here with me, it got me thinking."

And there it is.

When Ashley first talked about her faith, Regis was receptive to it, but admitted he was an atheist and knew very little about it. He knew more about pagan traditions and the asari Athame doctrine. There was a certain... clear attention he gave her every time she brought it up, now knowing he was fine with it.

"I'm sure he's keeping an eye on you now," she offered.

"You think?"

"I know."

He shook his head. "You know, sometimes I've thought about those two fucking years. Did we meet? Or was there nothing? I don't remember anything beyond dying in space and waking up on that damn table," he said, likely for her benefit. She did wonder. Selfishly, she wanted to confirm her beliefs.

"But that doesn't mean there wasn't anything." He let out a huff that almost sounded like a laugh. "Hannah says he would be proud of me. I can almost believe it now from her."

"Almost?"

He closed his eyes. "I've never had a good relationship with her after I became old enough to stop considering space to be the coolest shit ever."

She did know that they weren't close, but beyond that, she wondered why. Hannah Shepard was always a great paragon within the Alliance, continuing to carry a legacy that Regis shattered with Torfan. Not that she considered that as such, but many did.

Alliance royalty and the fallen disciple.

But there were times she met up with Hannah in those two years that showed... regrets from Hannah. The way she would hope that they would never have a Torfan, but to be prepared for something that could become it.

And that they would have her support no matter what. Lurking underneath was guilt from something she did after Regis's notoriety.

Perhaps that's why Kaidan always seemed more subdued, almost judgemental around her.

"Well, then I'll say he's proud of you. Achieving so much and surrounding yourself with incredible people and loving two men that obviously feel the same way," she said, rubbing his shoulder.

He looked up at her, those red eyes softening. "Thanks. I hate to say it, but my mother's and I's relationship got better after my death."

She tried not to flinch at that, but probably failed by the way Regis sighed. "Sorry. I hate having this gap. Fucks up my perception."

"It's hard on all of us," she said, recovering. "I don't like thinking about it, but it happened. Say it all you want, because against all odds, we're stuck with you again."

"Come on, tell me how you really feel," he laughed. Something in him seemed to loosen even as he straightened back up. "What were you doing up?" He glanced at her hands. "Someone went a little hard on the bags."

She rubbed her knuckles. "Did you ever read the reports on the X-57 incident?"

"I did, yes." His tone betrayed nothing.

"That's why I'm up," she said, letting out a sigh. "Sometimes, I think about the choice I made. And wonder if I should've chose different. There are nights that all I see are those damn bodies... the sacrifice I made to ensure Balak would never walk free again."

"Are you asking what I would've done?" Regis asked.

"Yes. No." She let out a frustrated sound. "I don't know. This mission helped secure me both the N7 track and a Spectre recommendation, but all I can think about is what I lost in the process."

"Then that makes you a good person," Regis said. "Don't lose that. Hell, I immortalized my damn squad for a reason." He rubbed the back of his neck, his skull tattoo peeking up from the collar of his hoodie. "Don't forget what you lost, but don't let it consume you either."

He never said what he would've chose. Even knowing Regis and his own personal code--he always tries to save as many innocent lives as possible--she wasn't sure what choice he would've made.

Maybe she doesn't want to know. Could she have survived Torfan, the Alpha Relay, the hard choices on his damn suicide mission? Not to mention his decision to hold back the Alliance fleet back when Saren and Sovereign were their biggest threats.

Best not to dwell on it.

"I'll keep that in mind. I've had to make some hard choices before, but... I don't know. Maybe it's all the shit surrounding that mission that made it hit deeper. All the things I could've done instead."

Regis nodded, looking back at the wall. "Zee and I had a long talk after the suicide mission. I was... not struggling per se but I was dealing with those I had lost. I wasn't close with them. Maybe that contributed, maybe not. In the moment, their deaths felt unavoidable. Still do, most of the time."

He frowned. "But that mission still weighs on me. Maybe even more than Torfan did. Too many outcomes and potential changes. I don't like what ifs... but I also think about what could've been if I put Taylor as the second squad leader instead of Vakarian. Legion with the crew escort. Grunt as my backup against that fucking abomination.... but I didn't make those choices. Could've been worse for us and me. And that's why I don't fucking dwell on this shit. Because it always could've been far worse just as much as it could've been better."

She nodded, pulling her knees to her chest. "It seemed so easy in the moment to deal with Balak and his squad. They were going to kill millions..."

"I understand," Regis said, his voice quiet. More than you know, was left unsaid, but she heard it all the same.

Distantly, she heard the elevator doors open. She turned around, and Kaidan and Zaeed walked out. Kaidan neglected to put a shirt on but was in soft cotton joggers, and Zaeed was in a loose tanktop and shorts.

Surely they knew what was going on today, right?

"We're here to collect our stray Commander," Kaidan said, holding out a hand for Regis.

"Bastard thought he could slip away from us," Zaeed said, shaking his head. "Come on, baby. Let's go back to bed."

Regis didn't defend himself from Zaeed, only reaching up to clasp Kaidan's hand, letting him help him up. Zaeed held out a hand for her to use, and she took it with a smile, using him as leverage to stand up.

"He was good company, though," Ashley said, pulling the attention back to her. "But I'm with you. It's late and I'm going to regret being up tomorrow morning."

"Take some time," Kaidan said, waving her concerns off. "We're in an adjustment period right now."

"Says you," Regis said, kissing him on the cheek. "Sorry for not waking you both. I needed some time."

"I know," Zaeed said. "But still, we're here for a goddamn reason, you know. Kaid, go ahead and escort him back up. I'll make us something to drink."

Kaidan nodded, not protesting at all. Maybe there was a plan to this. Regis didn't protest either, following Kaidan into the elevator.

Once the doors, closed, he walked over to the kitchen and pulled out a few mugs and put some water in the kettle. "Did he tell you?" he asked, reaching for a few hot chocolate packets. She slightly judged him for making it with water, but the gesture was sweet, even grabbing one for her.

"Well, he told me about a lot of things, honestly," Ashley admitted. "But yes, today is the day his father died. I didn't know."

"Not many do," he replied. "Kaid and I were thinking about talking with EDI and replicating a new plaque for the wall."

"I think he would appreciate that. I know he spends... more time than he likes to admit with the wall."

Zaeed nodded, crossing his arms. "I'm still not sure it was a good choice, but it seems to give peace to a lot of people here."

"Does Regis..." she trailed off, trying to figure out how to word what she wants to say without coming off as being too nosy.

"I think I get what you want to ask. Does he suffer from what happened on Alchera?"

"I sometimes forget how damn perceptive you are."

He winked. "Comes with the job." He took a moment to pour the pre-portioned packets into each mug, checking on the kettle. "Almost done," he muttered. He cleared his throat. "To answer the question, yes and no. He visited the site of the crash and recovered as many tags and effects he could all on his own. I insisted that I should go with him, but he refused. He also won't open that damn shutter in the ceiling. Cerberus knew damn well what they were pulling with that shit."

Regis also closes the Observation ones every time he enters. Joker and EDI keep the pilot shutters closed. She's noticed.

They all have.

"Kaidan once told me that Regis's biggest fear was dying in space. I'm surprised he still is willing to be on a ship after that."

Zaeed pressed his lips together in a hard line. "Duty above all else."

"You clearly don't believe that."

"But Regis does and will as long as we have the fucking Reapers to deal with." He scoffed. "Self-sacrificing goddamn idiot. I love him and my heart aches every time he goes out into the field, every time he has to yell at every selfish bastard in this galaxy to step up and do the right thing. And he gets back up each day, to do it all over again. If we win this, he'll either be the most celebrated hero or the biggest goddamn villain."

Regis has been called similar things. A hero for what he did on the Citadel, but more vocal outrage over a human condemning the Council and the Ascension.

And now... Regis has garnered the support of the turians, gained an army in the krogan, dealt a damning political blow to the salarians, and has many other allies in his pocket from what he's done even while under Cerberus's lock and key.

"I hope he gets the rest he deserves."

The kettle sang. Zaeed poured the water into each mug, grabbing a spoon to stir each one up.

"You and me both, Ash." He held out a mug.

She took it. "But we both know that's not going to happen anytime soon."

"And that's why we're here so he's not doing it alone. Good night, Ash. Thanks for keeping him company."

She smiled from behind her mug. "And thanks for the drink."

"Anytime."

3.) What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need?

Everything I want to write for the WIP is Coming So Help Me God. If it doesn't fit but is still Mass Effect it's going in a supplimentary little oneshots catch all thing. That's been most of the brain atm, I've got some DW WIPs but I'm totally gonna get back to them I promise.

That Does Not Mean I have Never had half assed ideas I didn't write.

I wanted to make my DBH fic longer, I wanted it to be a whole thing about Connor getting super overwhelmed with being a Deviant and everything that entails and it was all a super thinly veiled metaphor for autistic burnout. I also briefly thought I would recreate the whole of DBH as a text-adventure that was naive hah.

I wanted to write a She-Ra fic focusing on what if Adora just let Catra come with her when she sneaked out of the horde to go find the sword in the first episode. It was gonna be a big long AU and basically everything would be different if that one thing changed. They were gonna be gay way earlier

I have a whole original thing I have never written much of at all but I do have ideas!! I also have Assignmence and Autism Special Interests which take precident a lot of the time.

8.) Is what you like to write the same as what you like to read?

This is a fun one because mostly no? Depends on how specific you get. I write fanfic, I read a lot of fanfic. In terms of genre, I love writing angst, if I do not feel 1000% confident that the angst will be held properly (no big dramatic plot twists or OOC stuff for drama or fuckin cliffhangers, dickhead) then I will just simply not read it. No. I do like when it's funny and nonsense and I write a lot of that, but I also like when random americans write about fucking Calculus man idk what I like that's between me, god, and a team of psychologists.

15. Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?

I am simply built different these are all easy hahhaa. I am shit at suggesting titles for others writing but for me I just title everything either a joke or a song lyric and wham done. Idk if they're catchy or enticing I have no idea I just want it to all line up so you can scroll and sing a really weird disjointed version of a song weeee

WELL!! You are gonna read this and be like "none of this was new information to me" but idc I'm saying it anyway (SPOILERS FOR MY MASS EFFECT FIC LOL)

ROBOT SHEPARD. I adored that as a concept, it literally wasn't my goal with Tis Grace I have notes from the beginning trying to focus on the, like, social implictations of being dead for a while but it wasn't holding water and then I was like what about the physical implications and then I was like WHAT IF SHE'S AN AI

it was great and there is SO much coming for that, there's stuff in my ME3 one that revolves around that and I'm so excited for. It's all foreshadowed and set up and it's fun because a lot of it happened almost accidentally. In terms of relationships, I obviously love the title lesbians, I swear I do even though they have been together for maybe 15 minutes in the fic but look. I wanted an explanation for why Liara isn't with you in ME2 and I could not think of a cheery one for that. I also didn't expect to be as obsessed with Jack as I am but honestly herself and Shepard genuinely having a close friendship? Miranda gets roped in for dramatic tension? They should have let me write the games idc that I was 10 years old
