sorry for the late reply ! this site is mostly what i used since it's easier to start with one lesson to the next for me atleast. i also recommend watching Korean with Miss Vicky/빅키샘 한국어 on youtube but there are also other good Korean language learning channels with free resources and all :J Miss Vicky's videos are beginner-friendly as she breaks down and explains very well in detail the structure of korean sentences and uses real-life examples alongside. tips i'd give is to avoid relying on duolingo since it doesn't really have the same effect as actually learning the language with respect in its culture and native people. try exploring korean songs that aren't kpop and listening to real conversations that aren't scripted. remember to keep an open-mind and don't be afraid to ask a native speaker for help. wishing u the best of luck on your language learning o7

There are over 175 languages throughout the islands, spoken by more than 100 different ethnic groups. Filipinos are not homogeneous. Filipinos as a whole are comprised of many different ethnic groups and languages, all rich and diverse.

Buwan ng Wika is a celebration of this diversity and to promote the preservation of these languages.

It's also important to stress and know that these are LANGUAGES NOT DIALECTS. There is a big difference. Please stop calling them dialects of Filipino or Tagalog they are not!

Ok as a Filipino I HAVE to give it up to Kuang on this very interesting detail on the Tagalog Grammatica. As far as I know, in my very limited history, Japan, China, and Korea weren’t as influenced by the West prior the 20th Century due to their distrust with Westerners/outsiders to the point their borders had to be forcibly opened by either Western forces or by one another (a gross oversimplification—forgive me or educate me where you can).

However, the Philippines was colonized in the 1500s by the Spanish—the country’s own name is derived from Philip II of Spain—and they didn’t leave until 1898, when they sold us to the US. So Spanish influence is deeply ingrained in our art, music, food, and most evidently, language.

However, unlike English, the Spanish language didn’t exterminate native languages as well as it could’ve. My great-grandparents would’ve spoken Spanish AND Tagalog, and a couple of other native dialects besides. Yes, the Spaniards taught (usually wealthy, usually mixed) Filipinos their language, but Spanish friars utilized our language to their own advantage to better spread the word of God to us “savages”… and also because it was unfeasible to teach so many people who spoke so many languages Spanish. So, they learned one of our most spoken languages to better win us over, to colonize us, to “enlighten” us with their civility.

It would make complete and total devastating sense that these Spanish/European scholars can translate so much of our native canon and oral or written myth and commit it to their own languages. And it makes so much sense Kuang flecks that detail there, in a book that mentions time and time again the silent but sinister undercurrent of imperialism and colonialism in everyday British life in the 19th Century and academia today. I am frothing in the mouth. I am banging my head against the wall. So much history behind one tiny fucking detail.

now that i’m thinking about it the whole dottore(s) learning to become literate quickly thing would only work if the sentences and questions they were reading were EXACT matches with their own since the teyvat alphabet is just the latin one we use but looks different…

so plot twist reader is actually multilingual and was just directly translating (or translating the best they can) for them, knowing damn well that’d it’d take more than an alphabet to figure out that language.

and it’d be especially hard if the language had MULTIPLE writing systems or had character writing systems like chinese or japanese. japanese uses THREE WRITING SYSTEMS!!! kanji, katakana, and hiragana, and with chinese pronunciation too being essentially in even understanding what people are saying!

or it uses a system not in use at ALL (like visayan/tagalog or vietnamese, as a place like the philippines & vietnam have no counterpart in genshin, therefore no hints of translation. the CLOSEST (but not by a long shot) nations to them would be sumeru’s indian influences and liyue (again, just barely since both cultures are so far apart)

not to mention how sentences are structured, english (and therefore common teyvat) uses the svo (subject, verb, object) format, while a language like japanese uses sov (subject, object, verb)

No, I can completely relate to the linguistic interest since I learn dead languages as a hobby! I'm doing Latin and Ancient Greek so hearing someone else who's passionate made me really happy :)

Y/N isn't bilingual unfortunately. I originally was going to make them, the second language being Spanish, but I realised the majority of people wouldn't be able to speak it. This is a Y/N story so I often have to rein back my ideas a little bit :(

Let's use Japanese as an example as a different alphabet. The Dottore segments would easily figure out you were directly translating. It would take them longer to understand, but soon they'd learn to translate and slowly but surely assign the characters to the correct letters of their familiar alphabet.

^ I did this with ancient greek for example. Cognates would be what helps them the most. I don't know Japanese, so I can't really give an example, but I know most languages will have them because of the existence of mother languages and humans expanding and sharing inventions. (Let's use noodles as an example, in German pasta/noodles = nudeln. See the resemblance? - Please correct me if I'm wrong I haven't done German since I was 12, Modern Romance languages are the only ones I focus on that are still used today😭)

The point I'm trying to make is Dottore's segments would see the same resemblance and use it to translate other words. Their spelling would be like a 5 year olds at first, since they spell everything from the sounds they literally hear from the words when spoken, but they'd quickly learn.

Even if they only learn one variation of the Japanese alphabet, they'll learn quickly with the internet helping them out. Now that they know one language in this world, they can keep searching and searching and searching... Well, that's IF they figure it all out without asking you about it. They'd probably use the search engine on the television when you're not looking, figuring out how to switch the settings to Japanese and using it when you're brooding in your room or outside with another Harbinger.

As they search more, they get faster at typing and learn how to spell correctly thanks to auto-correct. They'd also learn lots of information about your world at an increasing speed without needing to come to you for help. The way I see it, you're fucked. You should have never allowed them to manipulate this. You've practically corrupted your world 💀

BTW - If I wasn't writing about the Harbingers, I'd definitely use Latin every now and then for mysteries in the stories...

where do i begin with this story? the beginning of the story almost seems like the middle, but i guess a good tale is one those would love. the story of ASTRANOVA technically begins in 2015, when he coined the name which he would eventually become known for, yet the story also begins in 2011 when he joined his first company, or in 2007 when his sister debuted and became extremely well known, at this point, we could start at any point, but let's just start from the semi beginning.

in 2007, his older sister anaiah made her debut as the maknae, center, and main vocalist of girl group nebula. better known by her stage name ‘luxury neriah’, she was a power tool in the industry. though private, somewhat irate, and still secretly coping terribly with the death of her mother, she charmed the hearts of south korea up until the groups disbandment in 2019. he hung around in the background and watched everything, just silently there in a tiny seoul apartment as his sister experienced the ‘idol life’, something so intriguing to him that he wasn't sure he'd be able to do it as flawless as she did. she was the figure who inspired him to do it all, watching her be an idol made him think he could make it, and the constant encouragement gave him the hope he so desperately needed.

after a grueling six years, six years in which these events transpired in his life: he joined sm, he became apart of sm rookies, grew a sizable predebut fanbase, was on the korean mickey mouse club, got put into nct dream, got pulled out of nct dream, and left sm because his father got into a car accident and he couldn't stand not being at home with him. he then found his first calling, producing. through journeys with his barely hanging on laptop and free soundcloud beats, ASTRO coined his name ASTRANOVA as a cute little pseudonym that he conjured up in the first song he ever created when he was fifteen. seemed producing worked, as after scouting from several companies (who only wanted him for the connection he had to his sister), he took up an opportunity with eunoia co because they were actually giving him something he wanted.. not idoling.

it's cliché yes, but ASTRO had given up on the idea of being an idol, he instead devoted his time to university work and producing for his labelmates. he made his production debut on the track ‘LOVE BOMB’ which was given to his labelmates AVIIX. over the course of two and a half more years, he would go on to participate in creating hits like: ‘PANTOMIME’, ‘THIS TIME’, ‘LOVE IN SPACE’, ‘THE RAINY NIGHT’, ‘FLICKER’, and, of course, ‘AMNESIA’. there are definitely more songs but his catalog extends a long while, we'd be here forever seriously. he was making sure to keep himself busy even without the idol life on his back.

‘AMNESIA’ started it all. it was in mid–2020 when he wrote it for NEVERLAND on a whim, but the song was a mixed bag for management, who couldn't decide if the song fit the groups concept, they kept it on the back burner for a while. then, someone released the demo without the company knowing, and.. it went viral. it was only ASTRO's second time doing the demo for a song he created, yet it seemed that so many wanted more. considering the idol dream had been long gone for a few years, he found it funny how people wanted for him to debut, but at the same time, it also boosted his ego in just the slightest.

the company gave him an ultimatum, he could simply remain a producer, or, he could use the chance he'd been given and finally make his idol dreams possible whilst remaining with just less creative power than before. considering the song was created by him, he could just release it himself. so he decided to take his chances, after sort of disappearing for five years and even getting a new stage name which was cool as shit (his own words), ASTRANOVA debuted on january 10, 2021, and a true star he is indeed.

there are definitely issues that need to be worked through, but with a team full of ‘just the sweetest assholes’ (- ASTRO 2022), broken promises healed, friendships rekindled, and many many songs saved in his files, it seems that he's always two steps ahead. the story doesn't have a surefire happy ending, but he's determined to get there, don't give him a challenge, he'll crush it.

so i want to talk about this particular part in babel

Based on the context of Babel, only the languages deemed "important" to the British Empire were the ones translated [an example from the book was Robin focusing on Mandarin and not Cantonese because according to Professor Lovell "Mandarin was the language of the Qing imperial court in Peking, the language of officials and scholars, and therefore the only dialect the mattered". (to which I felt the LARGEST chill creep upon me because of how uncomfortable that made me feel)]. So it makes sense that Tagalog was present here because it was the language spoken in the capital and its surrounding areas during the time of the Spanish colonization of the Philippines.

Side note: The British Empire also occupied Manila around 1762 until 1764 after the 1763 Treaty of Paris. Babel is set around the 1830s so the timeline makes sense yayyyy.

But the thing is, the Philippines has 170+ languages. Yes. LANGUAGES. Not even including regional dialects of those languages. Tagalog alone has more than 5 major dialects. So the 5-volume Grammatica absolutely would not encompass those. And because of the richness of the Philippines' various languages, and by extension cultures, those 5 volumes don't even scratch the surface of anything actually.

Another side note: The translations are from Tagalog to Spanish to English. Man. The meanings of a lot of words were most likely lost because of that huhu.

And so, even if there was no mentioned Filipino character in Babel, R.F. Kuang managed to awaken my sadness with that passage.

Do demons have their own language, like the angels speak Angelic? Or do they just speak Lingo like the Medians? Also, is the Angelic language based on anything or just your own creation?

Demons have their own language when it comes to body language. They court each other through fighting... show dominance through fighting... play with each other through fighting... they're a really rowdy bunch. But as for a spoken tongue, they just speak Lingo which is the common tongue amongst realms (because I don't want to just call it English). Angelic isn't really based on anything. I could have gone the extra mile and made a whole language to decode, but I just decided not to. Sure, it's because I was a bit lazy. But I also didn't want anyone to understand characters I didn't want them to understand. If that makes sense. There are people much more interested in developing a language that have made attempts at decoding Angelic. They're quite dedicated! I don't mind. But for me, that's not the point, so that's not a part of how I write. If someone is blabbing untranslated Angelic in the comic, I want you to feel, "What the heck are they saying?" I spent a lot of time around foreign languages when I was a kid. Tagalog was spoken by my mom, grandma, and their friends, but was not taught to me. Japanese was spoken by my best friend and her family, who I spent a lot of time with... and I only learned Japanese long after I moved away. Most people I knew in school were children of, or were, immigrants from Asia. I'm holding onto that memory of, and also trying to convey, that feeling of being around a language that is completely alien to you, but learning to communicate and love each other despite that. You could say it's a reoccurring theme in Slightly Damned! P.S. For the record I think it's bullshit that captions put [speaks foreign language] instead of the actual words of the language being spoken in videos. Angelic is gibberish, so if it appeared in something with audio, I would still want it to be indecipherable when spoken out loud.

the weldons have been part of red creek for generations. there was a time when everyone was worried the family name would die since the generation of that time ( noah weldon and his wife olivia ) weren't succeeding in having a kid no matter how hard they tried... and they tried for years, until dante came into their life. he was adopted and loved by the family for several years, they had believed he would be their only child until suddenly, unexpectedly olivia was blessed with another boy. still, the couple had more than enough love for both of their kids; dante was the only one that showed any interest in the ranch and taking over the family business so when the couple passed away ( first olivia, peacefully in her sleep with noah following after a couple years after ) of old age, they made sure to make him heir of their land and left their other son enough money to live comfortably.

born in 1986, daniel is the only child of dante and monica weldon; considered to be an "easy" child because of how calm he always seemed to be, he rarely ever cried or threw tantrums and was more than happy entertaining himself with his toys or his books. at least until he was old enough to follow after his father and help him with the tasks around the ranch.

he found his passion for animal care very early on and quickly took an active role in taking care of the livestock they had. his story books were replaced with anatomy volumes and more science oriented things. from then on he knew exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up and his parents couldn't be any prouder of their very smart son.

in school it was no surprise that he was excellent, always at the top of his class; getting good grades seemed effortless. constantly excelling at everything he put his mind to, except... anything involving socializing. that seemed to be the one thing he had a very difficult time navigating. at first he didn't mind, he was more than happy in his solitude, surrounding himself with his books, his stories, sucking up all the knowledge he could. but as he got older and having friends and forging connections started to become more important he realized how much he was struggling. it felt as if he was somehow so much different to everyone else, his extremely calm demeanor all the time was off - putting for some people. and he was deemed a "weird" kid for not wearing his heart on his sleeve.

then high school happened and things only got worse. everyone was worrying about relationships and all he cared about was his future and graduating quickly so he could start college. still, despite it all he managed to gain some friendships here and there. he was, admittedly, a very closed off and reserved individual but the few people he allowed to get close are people he's hold onto throughout the years.

the only period of time he was ever out of red creek was during his college years. he wasn't too far though, he went for pre - vet courses in michigan state university and then moved on to get his degree as doctor of veterinary medicine, and continued his higher education with an mba. but still during those 8 years ( give or take i suck at math :3 ) whenever he wasn't studying he was back in red creek, helping out as much as he could.

as soon as he finished college he started working on the ranch full time as the on - site vet, and also doing consult for the pets all over town... his father decided to leave the ranch under his care and enjoy life / travel all over the world with his wife when daniel was 33 and he's been managing it since then !! he's currently trying to expand it a little more / find ways to grow new crops / take care of more animals,to offer more produce varieties for the local businesses<3
