reason #1953925 why i am emotional about amos burton: the way he says it’s good to be seen when he’s finally reunited with his roci fam again

i love this choice of words, i love it SO MUCH

because it’s the simplest and most accurate way to describe his relationship with holden and naomi - they see him

they see him completely, both the good and the bad, they see him for who he is and they love him, not just in spite of his trauma and baggage, but because of it, because he wouldn’t be who he is without it and they wouldn’t have him any other way, and most importantly, they see him for who he can be, they see the potential in him and his capacity for goodness and they shine a light on that and help him see it for himself 

and i especially love this line because in season 5, we, the audience, finally get to see amos as timmy, the man he was before the roci, and we learn about lydia and we see him go out of his way to ensure charles has a place to say, but we also see how easy it is for him to fit back into his old stomping grounds, and after the asteroids hit and he and clarissa are out in the wilderness, he mentions how he grew up like that, shifting into survival mode and falling back into his old instincts, his old habits, reverting back to the man he was before

but then he recognizes it, realizes it, and with clarissa’s influence, chooses to be different, and for the rest of the season we see him make different choices, not the smart ones that would maximize his own chances of survival, but the good ones, the right choices that would save the most people who need help

it’s not easy for him to do this, it goes against everything he knows, but he does it because he wants to be better, he wants to be person holden and naomi believe he’s capable of being, he wants to be that version of himself that only they can see

because erich sees him as timmy and most everyone else see him as a mechanic or a killer but holden and naomi are the ones who have consistently seen him as someone who is good and worthy, and more than that, they let him see himself in that way as well

so when he says it’s good to be seen, it’s not just that he’s happy to see them, he’s happy to be seen by them, to be reminded of who he is when he’s with them and who they inspire him to be 

he has submitted to the mortifying ordeal of being known and has received the rewards of being loved!!!! 

and that love is stored in the roci !

Thinking about the first time the Roci crew CHOSE to accompany Holden in a stupid crazy mission (aka the first time they were voluntarily the Roci Crew) and Holden, moved, bringing them each a cup of coffee before take-off.

Thinking about post-Cibola Burn Holden’s very last chapter in the book being about how happy he is to be back home with his crew and how he makes everyone coffee and knows exactly how they each take it and that’s peak happiness for him.

TL;DR: James Holden’s love language is making coffee for his loved ones.

Ty & That Guy Podcast thoughts 💭 plus my own rewatch season 1 episodes 1xO4 & 1x05.

1x04 is a game changer. I liked the show immediately but I wasn’t hooked until 1x04. That was my event horizon.

Season 1 Holden being slacker turned celebrity with self-imposed Atlas like responsibility to hold up the world. So, completely unprepared and yet gonna do it anyway. {I love this idiot}

Season 1 RAW Amos with his dead shark eyes. Always ready to solve problems by pre-emptive violence. It is scary how he is both checked out of conversations and yet always aware of his surroundings. {I intrigued and terrified}

✅Holden holding eye contact with season 1 Amos is ballsy and he doesn’t flinch.

Holden and Amos clash. Lots of sparks. But despite Holden’s apprehension, he doesn’t back down. Amos looks away first.

‼️Amos can be VERY scary 😧....

😱Even Naomi (the only person he trusts) is afraid of him.

So, Amos is also looking (vetting) Holden and it’s a slow process.

*Season 1 Holden is .....Very Alpha....for a righteous AF out of his depths tactile softie.

But let’s review:

Holden can’t be forced into doing things, just because he is given an order.

The Donnager crew couldn’t make him change the narrative and blame Naomi.

Instead they save him. {Damn that is powerful}

But more than that.

➡️Holden wears them down, so that he gets to save his crew mates too.

Omg. {That is hella outrageous swagger.}

He could easily taken the out to blame Naomi and left, no questions asked. That is actually what the Donnager would have preferred.

But, he fought back. He didn’t back down. Just like his backstory in the Navy.

He will not be a bully and he will not enable bullying. And what Amos hates is a bully. So, this is the very rocking beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Holden is an inexperienced hot mess, but he is also self aware. Amos is numb and trigger happy, but he is self aware.

{The Rocinante naming moment} ....the story means so much to Holden. And an exotic dancer with that name meant something to Amos.

It’s the same kernel, from very different seeds.
