What in the ever loving rise of the brave tangled dragons is this
I saw it an immediately was like holy shit that’s so hijack-core, I think I have a problem. It’s also just Elsa and dragons too but like those ones from that rescue riders thing. That’s the vibes I’m getting while knowing nothing about it
Editing to add: I’ve been thinking about this now and all it’s become is a hijack child in the future with more human-ly evolved dragons and I’m horrified, the longer I think, the worse it becomes in my head

I've recently been started to join in on some new fandoms but I just wanna point out a few similarities that I have been blatantly noticing a few similarities between these Two Movies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The Sea Prince and The Fire Child" (also known as "The Legend of Sirius") and "Tabaluga" (also known as "Ice Princess Lilly").
Why am I thinking that they are quite similar if you may ask despite many of their own differences to each of their own story? Well, here are some similarities that I wanted to point between these Two Movies.
Basically, Two Stories that share the Same "Star-Crossed" Lovers dynamic between Fire and H2O.
Tumblr media
Which are based off of Actual Old Stories.
Tumblr media
Male Protagonist is associated with a Certain Element who has a Loyal, Brave, and Fun Personality who has a Small Sidekick for a Friend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love Interest is also associated with Another Element (Has a Kind, Sweet, yet Gentle Personality).
Tumblr media
Who's also got a Friend on the Same Elemental Race as Her.
Tumblr media
Story also has some Backstory Lore that the Two Races were once One but for some reason that their love turned to hate against each other due to an Evil Being of Jealously.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both Movies tend to develop a Romantic Story between Two Different Races of Elements between Fire and Hydrogen (Water/Ice).
Tumblr media
Then at the End of their Story, both Lovers end up joining together beneath their own Lands where the Two Lands with their own Said Element become One again in Peace.
Tumblr media
Now obviously, these Two Movies may strike a similar detail when it comes to Two Elements falling in love, but they're still not alike because the context of their own Storyline is completely different.
One that the ending in "The Sea Prince and The Fire Child" ends with Sirius and Malta dying together as they become the Stars while Tabaluga and Lilli in "Tabaluga" have their own Happy Ending where their Two Lands are in Terms together again (thus, no commits between suicide).
I'm not really too sure if "The Sea Prince and The Fire Child" was an inspiration to one of Peter Maffay's works in his "Tabaluga" series.
But I just couldn't help but notice some brief similarities between these Two Love stories that take up Two Different Elements between the Heat and the Cold into a Romeo and Juliet inspired story.
And also...
Both Movies also have a Wise Turtle Character.
Tumblr media
Bet you didn't see Another Coincidence.

A Cool Comparison ❄️: Tabaluga (1994 Novel) and Metropolis (1927 Film)
Part 1/2/3 (Finale)
[MAJOR SPOILER WARNING FOR BOTH SOURCES]
On top of their creation and purpose, both Lilli and the Android are heavily tied to biblical figures, specifically women of sin and wickedness, either figuratively or literally. Lilli is based after Lilith, Adam's first wife from Genesis, and the Android appears as the Whore of Babylon in a fever dream.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With these infamous identities, they are sent off to achieve their main goal, but with vastly different outcomes (Lilli becoming good and siding with Tabaluga and the Android causing a class war amongst the workers of Metropolis). Both characters even went on stage as part of their mission!
Tumblr media
For context, Lilli joins the stage as part of a magic show after Tabaluga offers to volunteer in a fire trick.
However, despite this, the finale of both Tabaluga the novel and Metropolis the film end with the enemy burning alive for their crimes, except for Lilli. No, Arktos' reign of terror ends with him catching himself on fire and melting away into a puddle.
Tumblr media
In the end of Metropolis, the people catch on to the Android's schemes after almost destroying the city and burn her alive, which causes Dr. Rotwang to fling himself into the flames to join his beloved Hel in death.
In conclusion, Arktos and all of Iceland/Metropolis should be heavily inspired by German Expressionism and Art Deco, just like Metropolis (1927).

It was, and still is, my favourite animation. And one of my favourite movies in general. I can say I grew up on it more than I can say I grew up on other animations because while, yes, I did watch an awful lot of Tabaluga, Benjamin Blümchen, Smurfs and Adventures of the Gummi Bears too, and I adored it too, they didn't have the same impact on me that Spirit did.
OP got a bit political here, but I was a kid who didn't really have any ties to imperialism/colonialism (we were neither colonisers, nor colonised, just the rich exploiting the poor), so the anti-imperialism message didn't get to me that much but what almost-adult me, who knew a little more about it, appreciated very much, was the lack of moralistic tone about it. And mutual respect on all sides of the fence. They literally say "whether that West was won or not in the end you must decide for yourself" and this, this means something. And it's a film for kids who says you must think for yourselves and that in itself means a lot.
But what got to me (and what I partially blame for the contradictory urges defining my life) is the reflection on freedom, individuality and responsibility. It taught me to value freedom more than all the patriotic history lessons combined ever could (and believe me, try they did, my country was under occupation for a long while, and is very proud of its history of fighting against it), but it also taught me that there is no such a thing as a complete freedom with no ties whatsover, that with more independence always comes more responsiblity, and you have to be prepared to shoulder it (maybe that's why I never wanted to be a princess, Spirit taught me long before that that being in charge means a lot of responsibility and possible danger), and to fight for what's important to me. And that with growing up comes a lot more freedom, but also more responsibility. It still gets to me, even though the concept of home is far more convoluted for me than for Spirit, and than complicates things. Also, fun fact, in my language the title is "Mustang from <location>". There is no name, or nickname, or anything. Just the name of the race. And the horse is referred to as Mustang. Which, paradoxically, emphasises his individuality and independence, because he refuses to be domesticated, tamed by a name. He can be a friend, he will not be a pet.
I wrote a very long post under you, OP, but you're going to make me watch Spirit again instead of sleeping, so I figure that fair's fair.
cannot believe there are people who aren't familiar with the 2002 movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. it's not remembered as one of the animated classics of the early 00s because it's so different than other beloved movies - no talking animals, no fantasy settings, limited comedic elements - but my god did it shine in so many other ways. arguably some of the best 2D animation ever created, outstanding soundtrack, an hour and a half of pure anti-imperialism and anti-colonialism in a kid friendly story about horseys.

I want to add that Tabaluga and Lilli are 15 in the Tabaluga 2018 film. And in the albums Tabaluga is 7 but in the cartoon is not mentioned his age though he acts more like a 10 year old. In Tabaluga and Leo Special, Leo is 9 or 10 and has some things in common with Tabaluga and they became close friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i don't feel like tblga's underdog role was well executed in the film , particularly with his dynamic in greenland & eisworld prior to finding his fire . i get that they wanted the audience to root for him & he's definitely a sweetie , but tbgla isn't inherently meek . & if anyone thinks to bully him , he'll settle it the old fashioned way , fire or no fire .
however , i can see greenlanders not taking him seriously , him being a baby dragon with no fire & all-- but it's more akin to how king from the owl house is viewed in the early seasons . now , tblga's not hammy & power-hungry as the little titan , but he is sick of not being taken seriously nor empathized for feeling incomplete without his wings or fire . & being around middle-school age certainly doesn't help .
this would be in contrast with how the eisworlders are straight up AFRAID of him . there's certainly more respect , maybe even something that arktos would comment on , ( showing the dichotomy of each character's views on respect & power ) but not something tblga would want . he doesn't WANT to be seen & revered as a monster , & that would also ties with how he finds his fire in the end : not from the power of fear , but the power of love .

So I watched new Tabaluga movie. (Spoilers)
6 out of 10. Maximum. Pros: -> humour -> music (I liked songs, especially that sung by Arktos) Nor pros, nor cons: -> plot -> characters (excluding Tyrion and Tyria) -> James. From one of the most loyal subjects of the snowman, they made intelligible-nonsense-garbling penguin. His role as the comedian is good, but in comparison to the 1997-2004 cartoon - poor. Cons: -> TYRIA. Just... what is this? -> Design of Tyria and (especially) Tyrion. I can’t stand that. This is blasphemy, not Tyrion. -> Finale. Tension building was good, the whole thing was looking good, but finale... even S03E25 and S03E26 (both or single) are better than this. -> Locations. Cartoon showed much, much more locations than movie. There, we had the feeling that both Greenland and Iceland are B I G, but here... it’s... too... cramped. Overall - not bad. But not good.

It's kinda hard to believe from Critics that People will say that "The Magic Riddle walked just so Shrek could run" when folks keep forgetting some prehistorical facts when it comes to Modernazing a Fairy Tale or even Do a Mega Crossover with all of the Old Literature being put in One Big Fat World. Even with Some Other Fairy Tale Media before Shrek.
If you're confused to know, I've just seen people comparing an Australian Animated Film called "The Magic Riddle" (which is a suppose adaptation of the Cinderella fairytale) with DreamWorks' Adaptation of Shrek (which reminds Me of the comparison between "The Water Babies" and "Alice in Wonderland"). One being the Latter still being Watched Today while The Former has not. But unlike those 2 Victorian Literature works, there happened to be other Fairy Tale Crossovers or Ones that have Modernized the Literature Works that we've recognized as of Today long before Shrek came into the Universe.
I have nothing against people who dislike or hate "The Magic Riddle" (being that it's made behind the same company with their own Adaptations of "Blinky Bill", "Dot and The Kangaroo" and my most favorite being, "Tabaluga"), but this is just something that I had to get off my chest if people who have seen TMR need to know this importantly.
Shrek was never really established as an Original Creation from DreamWorks with the idea of having All Fairy Tale characters set in the same world with a Modernized in the Medieval Century diet with a Parody genre, Shrek was actually a Children's Book by William Steig. The plotline of the Original Shrek was completely different then the One that we all now, even from Today's standards of Pop Culture.
Shrek actually came out 1 year before The Magic Riddle, meaning that The Original Shrek story had No Absolute Fairy Tale Characters, thus, it only had its own Original Characters in its Original Story where's the Foreign Movie had its own Fairy Tale Crossover (even before when 10 Years that DreamWorks picked it up as a Successful franchise), meaning the Actual Shrek story was meant to be a huge Mockbuster Parody of the Cliche Fairy Take genre of rescuing a Damsel in Distress and having a Hero's Journey.
Neither of the Two Storylines between a Book and a Famous Fairytale Adaptation were even that close of being similar but Shrek is a Comdey Story that's meant to be a Parody of all Fairy Tales whereas The Magic Riddle is meant to have its own Modern Adaptation of the Cinderella story mixed with Other Famous Stories.
Sure, you could at least say that the Foreign Film itself probably gave it the inspiration towards DreamWorks' adaptation but I still wouldn't want to buy it in a Very Huge Bad Light as someone who Watches Foreign Films and even Looking for Lost/Obscure Media around its Treasures.
But what really bugs Me about that kind of Topic is that Everyone tends to Forget that there Other Fairy Tale parody media, even long before when Shrek or even The Magic Riddle came in.
The Examples that I am deeply talking about are the ones that either have a Crossover or Modernize in a Medieval Setting within a Fairy Tale (meaning that The Magic Riddle is not the first thing to pass it on through Shrek).
Let Me Just Say This Out Loud Through My Chest...
Into The Woods and Donkeyskin (1970) were the Very First Fairy Tale adaptations to Parodize a Fairy Tale way long before Shrek was made.
Let Me have a Better Explanian of these Two Parodies and how they've done it before these Said Media's existance.
Into The Woods was probably a First Fairy Tale crossover on Stage, that being with its own Original Main Lead Characters before Shrek about a Couple walking through the Woods, only to find unexpected plotlines of Fairy Tale characters in their own Stories and then Random Things just suddenly happen in a Fairy Tale trouble (which is just something in One Common that would be part of that Trope with how both the Shrek films and The Magic Riddle did), so it's positive to say that the Musical would've been the Huge Influence behind the Ogre Story besides than the Cinderella crossover, even when Disney would then go on to Adapt their version of the Musical as Into The Woods always held up its own Broadway throughout the Years which can prove that the Musical is too recognizable than the Australian one that would've been the real huge inspiration for Shrek and The Magic Riddle is what I can clearly consider.
The 70s French Adaptation of "Donkeyskin" (within the exact same Cinderella trope made by the Same French Author behind the Original Story) isn't necessarily a Fairy Tale crossover but rather, it parodies the Original Story with some Modern techniques. It plays off as a Comdey version of the Other Fairy Tale as it even has unexpected ending that it's actually a Story within its own Modern Era set within its own Medieval Time Period (too many decades before Shrek would do that).
That being said, those are indeed prime examples of how that there Other Possiblites to interpret a Fairy Tale crossover that you can do besides then The Big One (Happily N'Ever After, Ever After High, and Enchanted are prime examples).
I don't mind some negative Magic Riddle reviews but honestly, I'm just not really the kind of person who would compare Two Properites of Unfamiliarity and Familirity in a "Bad" Light. As an Obscure Fangirl, it just kinda really hurts Me seeing I find something interesting that No One cares about and then sprays it as a Bad Light with comparing the Famous One in a Good Light, just because the Latter is more popular than the Former.
Granted, I do agree that "The Magic Riddle" could've been more if it wasn't such a mess but the Concept Trailer just sounds so something of what we could've had gotten instead.

A Cool Comparison ❄️: Tabaluga (1994 Novel) and Metropolis (1927 Film)
Part 1/2 (Continued)
[MAJOR SPOILER WARNING FOR BOTH SOURCES]
In fact, both sources showcase the cramped, monotone living quarters where the workers/lower class masses stay in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's even this massive furnace that brings energy to the city above!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While all of Metropolis falls helpless under his command, Arktos sets forth to capture Tabaluga, the last of the dragons, and preserve him in his museum of living species. But after many failed attempts, he comes up with a brilliant idea: he creates Lilli, a wind-up doll made of ice whose beauty is so irresistible that not even a dragon can turn her away. This is very similar to Dr. Rotwang, one of the main villains of Metropolis, who creates a female android after Hel, a deceased woman he is madly in love with.

So what do you think of “Tabaluga-Der Film”?
I really liked the movie. I think the animation was beautiful and i love Tabaluga and Lilli's design. And what impresses me is that they gave Lilli a personality too. I'm so glad their famous songs are now translated in english. I wish they were available on youtube or somewhere else.
There are some things that I didn't like about the movie too. The fact that they didn't keep Arktos' old design like his cats eyes or they could at least give him some black fangs.
I actually like Mirmel and i think it was cute when he was imitating Arktos but I didn't like that they used the same old joke from season 3 when James tells Arktos his plan and then Arktos claims it as his own. It was funny the first time but now I was expecting better interaction between them, i know the writers could come up with better jokes. Maybe they used the old joke to make a reference to the TV series but why not keep Artkos' cat eyes too, i wonder.
I have some screenshots from the movie and maybe I will make like a full review but it will look more like a shitpost XD
