Following Cass further into the labyrinth, aware that at any moment Alleytown could come crashing through the ceiling, Bruce continued to contemplate which problems to solve, and the order it would have to be done in, what resources were available.
Could they stop Alleytown's destruction? The League's victory speech suggested that there was no way to evacuate in time. Even if nobody died, and the Lazarus Lake could restore every civilian, there was still the problem of an entire borough of Gotham with Lazarus Fever.
There was Altair to deal with, Tim had reported his presence and that Ra's was not a threat- as Bruce had suspected from JJ's photograph of the man, restrained and vegetative. Another issue. Saving Ra's al Ghul whilst he was in need of life support. Alleytown was the higher priority but it reaffirmed to Bruce that they needed to prevent the cataclysm, and soon.
If Altair had planned the detonation, then Bruce would simply have to break the information out of him. He clenched his fists, rhythmically, reminding himself that his children could take this information. Take it and save Alleytown.
The Lazarus Lake itself was a concern, but it could be handled after- and Bruce couldn't help the sickly urge to wonder if Hal could... if- if that could be undone. If blood could be washed from Steph's hands before it dried.
To Cass, he communicated in silent, clear body language, capture the clone. We need to stop his plan.

ooc: Since i've had @damianwayne-thebloodson asking for my notes on trying to figure out the final reason of @officialbruciewayne's LOL meanings, and for the life of me I can't figure out how to post a pdf on here yet, i'm just going to copy paste it below the cut!
Odd scenarios where LOL is used:
> to babs:
>> “My darling…
Paranoia is a completely normal reaction, you should in fact be constantly on guard, and this is the right instinct.
Do not be scared, or afraid, but be vigilant. I am watching over you. LOL.”
>>> paranoia seems outside of what babs would normally say, and the bolded section is also very uncharacteristic
It's funny.
For the ditzy Brucie persona
He is laughing very fondly
Anachronistic code in case timey-wimey happens
Currently Unknown
It is emotionally easier than saying I love you
Pairing 1: (mood)
1, 2, 3
4, 5, 6
Pairing 2: (purpose)
1, 3
2, 4, 5
6
Pairing 3: (type)
3, 5
“for the final reason of LOL, does it have to do with like, a "we're being watched" sort of code??”
^ incorrect reason, but on the right path
1, 3:
> to laugh at others and finding himself funny
2, 4, 5:
> to hide a true meaning? Ditzy = hiding smart, time code = hiding reality?
> could be confirmed by saying a code is a good path
6:
> to tell others he loves them
1, 2, and 3 similarities:
> laughing is a common theme
4 and 5 similarities:
> insufficient data
> likely some form of code though
6:
> on it’s own, deals with emotions?
1, 2, and 4 similarities:
> unsure
4, 5, and 6 similarities:
> insufficient data for 5
> possibly
> 4 and 6
>> says one thing while meaning another, codes
3 and 6 similarities:
> love
You'd like me to keep an eye on Altair as well, i assume? -RR
I already assumed you would, LOL. -B
> confirmed 1, 5, 6
>> “he thinks it’s funny” -1
>> “Emotionally easier than saying I love you” -6
>> “?” -5
The reasons were grouped as follows:

LOL
Code, has to do with what’s happening this weekend
> does not deal with spies
> similar to how the time shenanigans one was
>> “possibly similar”
>> old fashioned?
> will be vital in the weekend plans
> has something to do with “Bruce not being able to speak directly”
Weekend plans:
> will deal with bruce being “out of town”
> Jason is in charge of Tim and Damian?
> plans were changed due to Ra’s al Ghul and Altair al Ghul
> Steph was allowed to become Batman as a test for Saturday night patrol
Lazarus pits?
> Look On Lazarus?
> League Or Lazarus?
> Look Out Lazarus?
> League Occupying Lazarus?
> Likely Observing Lazarus?
> Lazarus On Lake?
“does LOL have to do with being used in situations where it wouldn't really make sense to use it?”
> confirmed “so so so close”
“It has to do with him specifically using it when it doesn't make sense to be used (be that grammatically, context-wise, etc.) to let them know something is up. That way it stands out from other times when he casually uses it to just laugh at his kids or to tell them he loves them.”
> Turn it around
Opposite of that is:
It has to do with him specifically not using it when it does make sense to be used (be that grammatically, context-wise, etc.) to let them know something is up. That way it stands out from other times when he casually uses it to just laugh at his kids or to tell them he loves them.

Behind the Scenes of The Next Doctor (Part 18)
Excerpts from the podcast commentary with Julie Gardner (executive producer) & Russell T. Davies (writer/showrunner) - discussing the first look at Jackson Lake’s TARDIS/balloon:
JG: I'm a bit heartbroken, to be honest...
RTD: What!?
JG: ...that the Mill has never won any significant industry award for Doctor Who
RTD: Yes, that's true, and I'll tell you why. Because when, in your award ceremonies, awards for visual effects are given, they're given for something that looks the most real.
JG: And we're a spaceship... alien planet
RTD: Juries of people sit there watching stuff and they watch a Cyber King and they'll watch a spaceship and they'll watch a Lazarus-monster and they'll go, 'well that's fantasy' so they don't give it any marks, they don't give any 'points'. Whereas if something is unnoticeable, whether it's the Grand Hotel or whether it's like -- The Street won visual effects awards this year for putting twins on screen, a simple split-screen, which wasn't simple - they worked very hard on it, and I'm not begrudging anyone else their prize (yes I am)
JG: But it's nothing in comparison with what The Mill do - the scale, the workload, the shots, the number of shots
RTD: Their point is The Mill wasn't even nominated for a visual effects award!
JG: I can't bear it
RTD: The show wasn't nominated. We don't get cross about that stuff often...
JG: When you look at that balloon, and you see everything else that's coming in this episode, it's absolutely, profoundly gobsmacking
Thank you to everyone who shared set photos!

DEN OF GEEK CRITICS’ PICKS
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
They’re the world’s most fearsome fightin’ team. They’re heroes in a half-shell and they’re green. I mean, what more do we need to say? 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is no Citizen Kane, but comic book movie fans flock to it like the four titular turtles to pizza. The film knows exactly what it is, providing cheesy one-liners, silly action, and unpretentious fun. Throwing in Will Arnett as a sidekick for April O’Neil was an inspired choice that paid dividends in laughs and whoever tapped Tony Shaloub to voice Splinter should get a pay raise. Produced by Nickelodeon Pictures, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wasn’t only the highest grossing film in the series, but also the highest grossing Nickelodeon film of all-time. This reboot of the classic ninja team helped spawn further films, new TV series, and a renewed interest in one of the most beloved comic book properties ever. Cowabunga, dude!
Noah
This isn’t your Sunday School’s Noah. Darren Aronofsky’s adaptation of the story of the biblical figure Noah is an awe-inspiring epic that takes the bones of the famous story and infuses themes about environmentalism, self-doubt, and yes, faith. Pulling liberally from texts like the Book of Enoch, the film has far more action than just leading animals onto a boat and a storm. Shot by Matthew Libatique, the movie looks absolutely gorgeous and at times can be genuinely breath-taking, but it’s not just about the visuals. Russell Crowe stuns in the title role, but the entire ensemble is great, including a post-Potter Emma Watson and a ferocious Ray Winstone. No one expected Noah to be more akin to a thought-provoking art house film than a straight-forward epic, but that’s the sort of genius you get from Aronofsky, one of the most exciting and inventive filmmakers working today.
Shine a Light
Even if we hadn’t just lost the immortal, suave Charlie Watts, the heartbeat of rock and roll’s longest institution, The Rolling Stones, we’d still be recommending Martin Scorsese’s Shine a Light. Capturing the legendary band during their A Bigger Bang Tour in 2006, Scorsese spends a lot of the time rightfully focusing on Watts. With the camera fixated on Watts, you witness his unflappability; the way that he can make such raucous playing look so effortless. You also catch the man’s unique, jazz-influenced technique, like how he rarely hits the center of his snare, or how he changes his grip whenever he hits a cymbal. Even in their old age, the Stones are still one of the tightest, most electrifying live acts, and Shine a Light puts you right on stage with them as they barrel through one of the deepest catalogs in recorded music. It’s simply a masterful concert film.
The Virgin Suicides
Sofia Coppola likely has to deal with accusations about nepotism to this day, but anyone who saw her directorial debut The Virgin Suicides knows that Francis’ daughter would have made it as a filmmaker even without her famous last name. This haunting adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel of the same name taps into the melancholy of childhood, the dreamlike haze of memory, and the mystery that lurks inside suburban homes. Coppola expertly captures the pull that an ethereal group of sisters have on the imaginative group of boys that pine for them in a way that is relatable for anyone that had an unrequited crush in high school. As a coming-of-age movie, it is one of a kind. As an exploration of trauma and grief, it is crushingly effective. The original score by the band Air only adds to its hypnagogic vibe.
Rock ‘n’ Roll High School
Punk rock music and Roger Corman pictures are some of the core tenants that Den of Geek was founded on, so of course we’re going to recommend 1979’s Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, which features possibly the coolest band of all-time, The Ramones. Let our resident punk rock movie expert Jim Knipfel break it down for you:
“After producing so many dozens of teen rebellion films over the years, Corman finally hit the pinnacle, the ultimate teen rebellion picture, with the cartoon antics ratcheted up more than a few notches. There are so many bad jokes flying around, so many visual gags and film references packed into every scene, so many overwrought teen film clichés pushed way past absurd, it’s a film that demands multiple viewings. Even if “Riff Randall, rock ’n’ roller” (P.J. Soles) doesn’t look much like any punk chick I ever knew, I’m perfectly willing to accept it. And in historical terms, it really was this film more than the 4 albums they had out at the time that spread the word about The Ramones to mainstream America, and that’s worth something. Old as I am I still get a thrill every time the students and the Ramones blow up Vince Lombardi High, and anyone who doesn’t must be wrong in the head somehow.”

Hi friends! I have been in a bit of an anxiety pit for the past couple of weeks but I'm hoping to be more present on here going forward. @ajoblotofjunk and @dame-lazarus both tagged me for this, thank you! ❤️ (Also, ajoblotofjunk, I’m SO glad we have the opportunity to get to know each other better via this meme 😂❤️)
Rules: Answer 21 questions and tag 21 people you would like to get to know better!
Nicknames? The vast majority of my fannish friends call me Brynn, including IRL; I answer as happily to that as I do to my wallet name. My husband calls me many ridiculous nonsensical things, such as “lady yam” and “baby puncher” (NOT, I should clarify, because I have ever even considered punching a baby, but because he thinks the combination of words sounds funny).
Real name? I am old school enough to want to keep my wallet name separate from my fannish name, at least publicly on the internets! Lol
Zodiac sign? Gemini (which, man, internet zodiac stuff NEVER seems to really understand/like Gemini). Taurus moon, Leo rising. ENFP, too, while we’re at it. 😂
Favorite musician or group? The Headstones and My Chemical Romance have been my top two of the past several years. Other artists who show up on most of my playlists include Springsteen, Bon Jovi, the Kris Delmhorst/Jeffrey Foucault/Peter Mulvey triumvirate, The Local Strangers, Lake Street Dive, and The White Stripes.
Favorite sports team? The Seattle Mariners (fairly unfortunately for me, though there have been some pretty fun times in there too). My dad loved baseball and I eventually fell in love with it too, in my early 20s, and it was the biggest point of connection we had. And baseball takes up enough of my time and emotional energy that I am so far pretty monogamous about it and have not gotten super invested in any other sports. But I never say never!
Other blogs? My first blog was an LJ, and I still have a Dreamwidth account that I haven’t updated in years. I’m @rockedfaces on Twitter (a lot of my baseball fandom lives there, as well as the ongoing clusterfuck that is the USA, and RTs of cute animals, and some media fandom stuff too). Mostly I can only manage one social media platform at a time so while I totally get the concept of having different accounts for different interests on the same platform, I cannot imagine maintaining that!
Do I get asks? Mostly only when I do ask memes. I always appreciate them though!
Blogs I follow? 185. Though I just came back to Tumblr a few months ago after a years-long hiatus, because I wanted to Get Involved in J/B fandom, so some of those blogs are now defunct and I know there are lots of great ones I don’t follow yet, too.
Tumblr crushes? Obviously!
Lucky number? 7 I guess?
What am I wearing? Black yoga pants, a brewery t-shirt that I got for free as a pub trivia prize, and a sweatshirt for the western martial arts convention that my husband co-runs.
Dream vacation? Right now? The alternate universe where there’s no global pandemic. Failing that, I’d like to go to New Zealand someday, and go back to the UK and Ireland, too. More basically, I just want to walk around interesting cities and eat good food and drink tasty alcohol with people I like. Pretty hikes are good too.
Dream car? I’m not really a car person. But an electric car with a super-long range would be pretty sweet.
Favorite food? I love very many foods! As you might be able to tell by the fact that I wrote a whole long fic about it! 😂 Tough to beat cheese and bread, as a general concept. I’m also extremely into good summer fruit when it’s in season, especially strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, nectarines, plums. Ooh and mango. And a really good peach is transcendent, though they’re rare here. We get amazing cherries though. SO MANY GOOD CHERRIES. Is it time for summer fruit yet????
Drink of choice? I do drink quite a bit of water, and I’m super into fizzy water right now. Alcohol-wise, bourbon or rye (perfect Manhattans are my go-to in the absence of a cocktail list), or a good Last Word in the summer. Also sparkling wine. And beer, especially at the ballpark (IPAs are my standby, as basic as that makes me, though I don’t like the super bitter ones).
Instruments? I played piano through high school and took voice lessons in high school and college (I was a theater kid). I can still play piano veeeery sloooowly if I’m learning something new, though some of the songs I played a lot as a teenager are still in my fingers somehow!
Languages? English and what remains of my high school French. I really want to learn Spanish--if for no other reason than to be able to read baseball players’ Instagram posts--but so far I have gotten as far as downloading Duolingo. IT’S A JOURNEY.
Celebrity crush? Sooooo many. Nikolaj and Gwen are the two brightest stars in my little fannish sky at the moment, obviously. Various handsome baseball players. Ben Browder and Claudia Black. Chadwick Boseman and Nicole Beharie. Anna Kendrick. Frank Iero and Ray Toro. Lindsey Way. David Cook. Adam Brody. Gillian Anderson. I could go on!
Random facts? Let’s do three to make this 21 questions for real! 1) Ummm. I am bad at random facts about myself! I have one sibling, a brother who’s about a year older, and we were super close up through college (we still get along fine, he’s just been on the other side of the country for years now so our paths have diverged more); 2) We stayed a weekend in one of the treehouses at Treehouse Point in Falls City, WA just before Treehouse Masters really exploded and it was one of the most magical experiences of my life; 3) I never knew I was a dog person until we got a dog, and even though we are dogless now (though I would love to get another one at some point!), I am still very much a dog person, and I always want to see pictures of your dog, FYI.
I feel like with everybody tagging several people and me being way behind in responding, surely most of y’all have done this already? But if not, please consider yourself tagged! And @ me! And/or link me to your posts in the replies; I’d love to see what I missed while I wasn’t around.

Sheol (/ˈʃiːoʊl/ SHEE-ohl, /-əl/; Hebrew: שְׁאוֹל Šəʾōl),
in the Hebrew Bible, is a place of darkness to which
spirits of the dead go. Under some circumstances
they are thought to be able to be contacted by the living.
1a] OT: The Hebrew word seol [l/a.v], "Sheol, " refers to
the grave or the abode of the dead
[Psalm 88:3; Psalm 88:5].
Through much of the OT period, it was believed that
all went one place, whether human or animal
[Psalm 49:12; Psalm 49:14; Psalm 49:20],
whether righteous or wicked [Ecclesiastes 9:2-3].
Psalm 49:12 | But a man, despite his wealth,
cannot endure; he is like the beasts that perish.
Psalm 49:14 | Like sheep they are destined for Sheol.
Death will be their shepherd. The upright will rule
them in the morning, & their form will decay in Sheol,
far from their lofty abode.
Psalm 49:20 | A man who has riches w/out
understanding is like the beasts that perish.
Ecclesiastes 9:2-3 | It is the same for all:
There is a common fate for the righteous &
the wicked, for the good & the bad, for the
clean & the unclean, for the one who sacrifices
& the one who does not. As it is for the good,
so it is for the sinner; as it is for the one who
makes a vow, so it is for the one who refuses
to take a vow. This is an evil in everything that
is done under the sun: There is one fate for
everyone. Furthermore, the hearts of men are
full of evil & madness while they are alive, &
afterward they join the dead.
No one could avoid Sheol [Psalm 49:9; 89:48],
which was thought to be down in the lowest parts
of the earth
Psalm 49:8-9 | For the redemption of his soul
is costly, & never can payment suffice, that
he should live on forever & not see decay.
Psalm 89:48 | What man can live & never
see death? Can he deliver his soul from the
power of Sheol? Selah
[Deuteronomy 32:22; 1 Samuel 28:11-15;
Job 26:5; Psalm 86:13; Isaiah 7:11;
Ezekiel 31:14-16; Ezekiel 31:18]
Deuteronomy 32:22 | For a fire has been kindled
by MY anger, & it burns to the depths of Sheol;
it consumes the earth & its produce, & scorches
the foundations of the mountains.
1 Samuel 28:11-15 | “Whom shall I bring up
for you?” the woman asked. “Bring up Samuel,”
he replied. But when the woman saw Samuel,
she cried out in a loud voice & said to Saul,
“Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!”
“Do not be afraid,” the king replied.
“What do you see?” “I see a god coming up out
of the earth,” the woman answered.
“What does he look like?” asked Saul.
“An old man is coming up,” she replied.
“And he is wearing a robe.”
So Saul knew that it was Samuel, & he bowed
face-down in reverence.
Then Samuel said to Saul,
“Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?”
“I am deeply distressed,” replied Saul.
“The Philistines are fighting against me, &
GOD has turned away from me. HE no longer
answers me, either by the prophets or dreams.
So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”
Job 26:5 | The dead tremble—those who
dwell beneath the waters.
Psalm 86:13 | For great is YOUR loving
devotion to me; YOU have delivered me
from the depths of Sheol.
Isaiah 7:11 | “Ask for a sign from the LORD
your GOD, whether from the
depths of Sheol or the heights of heaven.”
Ezekiel 31:14-16 | This happened so that no
other trees by the waters would become great
in height & set their tops among the clouds,
& no other well-watered trees would reach
them in height. For they have all been
consigned to death, to the depths of the
earth, among the mortals who descend to
the Pit.’ This is what the LORD GOD says:
‘On the day it was brought down to Sheol,
I caused grief. I covered the deep because of it;
I held back its rivers; its abundant waters were
restrained. I made Lebanon mourn for it, & all
the trees of the field fainted because of it.
I made the nations quake at the sound of its
downfall, when I cast it down to Sheol w/ those
who descend to the Pit.
Then all the trees of Eden, the choicest & best
of Lebanon, all the well-watered trees, were
consoled in the earth below.
Ezekiel 31:18 | Who then is like you in glory &
greatness among the trees of Eden?
You also will be brought down to the depths
of the earth to be w/ the trees of Eden.
You will lie among the uncircumcised, w/
those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh
& all his multitude, declares the LORD GOD.’”
Unlike this world, Sheol is devoid of love, hate, envy,
work, thought, knowledge, & wisdom
[Ecclesiastes 9:6 Ecclesiastes 9:10].
Ecclesiastes 9:6 | Their love, their hate, & their
envy have already vanished, & they will never
again have a share in all that is done
under the sun.
Ecclesiastes 9:10 | Whatever you find to do
w/ your hands, do it w/ all your might,
for in Sheol, where you are going, there is
no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.
Descriptions are bleak:
There is no light
[Job 10:21-22; 17:13; Psalms 88:6; 88:12; 143:3],
no remembrance [Psalm 6:5; 88:12; Ecclesiastes 9:5],
no praise of GOD [Psalm 6:5; 30:9; 88:10-12; 115:17;
Isaiah 38:18] — in fact, no sound at all
[Psalm 94:17; 115:17].
Its inhabitants are weak, trembling shades
[Job 26:5; Psalm 88:10-12; Isaiah 14:9-10] who can
never hope to escape from its gates
[Job 10:21; 17:13-16; Isaiah 38:10].
Sheol is like a ravenous beast that swallows the
living without being sated [Prov 1:12; 27:20; Isaiah 5:14].
Some thought the dead were cut off from GOD
[Psalm 88:3-5; Isaiah 38:11]; while others believed that
GOD's presence reached even to Sheol [Psalm 139:8].
Psalm 88:3-5 | For my soul is full of troubles,
& my life draws near to Sheol. I am counted
among those descending to the Pit. I am like
a man w/out strength. I am forsaken among
the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave,
whom YOU remember no more, who are
cut off from YOUR care.
Isaiah 38:11 | I said, “I will never again see
the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of
the living; I will no longer look on mankind
w/ those who dwell in this world.
Psalm 139:8 | If I ascend to the heavens,
YOU are there; if I make my bed in Sheol,
YOU are there.
Toward the end of the OT, GOD revealed that there will
be a resurrection of the dead [Isaiah 26:19].
Sheol will devour no longer; instead GOD will swallow
up Death [Isaiah 25:8].
The faithful will be rewarded with everlasting life while
the rest will experience eternal contempt [Daniel 12:2].
Daniel 12:2 | And many who sleep in the dust of
the earth will awake, some to everlasting life,
but others to shame & everlasting contempt.
This theology developed further in the inter-testamental period.
The New Testament
By the time of JESUS, it was common for Jews to
believe that the righteous dead go to a place of
comfort while the wicked go to Hades
["Hades" normally translates "Sheol" in the LXX],
a place of torment [Luke 16:22-23].
Luke 16:22-23 | One day the beggar died & was
carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. And the
rich man also died & was buried.
In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up
& saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side.
Similarly, in Christianity, believers who die go
immediately to be with the LORD
[2 Corinthians 5:8 ; Philippians 1:23].
Hades is a hostile place whose gates cannot prevail
against the Church [Matthew 16:18].
Matthew 16:18 | And I tell you that you are Peter, &
on this rock I will build MY Church, & the gates of
Hades will not prevail against it.
In fact, JESUS HIMSELF holds the keys of Death &
Hades [Revelation 1:18].
Revelation 1:18 | the Living One.
I was dead, & behold, now I am alive forever & ever!
And I hold the keys of Death & of Hades.
Death & Hades will ultimately relinquish their dead
& be cast into the lake of fire [Revelation 20:13-14].
Revelation 20:13-14 | The sea gave
up its dead, & Death & Hades
gave up their dead, & each one
was judged according to his deeds.
Then Death & Hades were
thrown into the lake of fire.
This is the 2nd death—the lake of fire.
The fact theology develops within the OT &
between the O&NT does not mean the BIBLE
is contradictory or contains errors.
It only indicates progressive revelation,
that GOD revealed more of HIMSELF & HIS plan
of salvation as time went on.
Some OT saints believed in Sheol, while the NT
teaches clearly about heaven & hell, is no more
of a problem than that the OT contains a
system of atonement by animal sacrifice
Now made obsolete in CHRIST [Hebrews 10:4-10]
or the OT teaches GOD is one [Deuteronomy 6:4]
while the NT reveals a Trinity. #TrinityofGOD

SHEOL
she'-ol (she'ol):
1. The Name
2. The Abode of the Dead
(1) Not a State of Unconsciousness
(2) Not Removed from God's Jurisdiction
(3) Relation to Immortality
3. Post-canonical Period
1. The Name:
This WORD is often translated in the KJV "grave"
[e.g. Genesis 37:35; 1 Samuel 2:6; Job 7:9; Job 14:13;
Psalm 6:5; Psalm 49:14; Isaiah 14:11, etc.]
or "hell" [Deuteronomy 32:22; Psalm 9:17; Psalm 18:5;
Isaiah 14:9; Amos 9:2, etc.];
in 3 places by "pit" [Numbers 16:30-33; Job 17:16].
It means really the unseen world, the state or
abode of the dead, & is the equivalent of the
Greek Hades, by which word it is
translated in Septuagint.
The English Revisers have acted somewhat inconsistently
in leaving "grave" or "pit" in the historical books & putting
"Sheol" in the margin, while substituting "Sheol" in the
poetical writings, & putting "grave" in the margin
["hell" is retained in Isaiah 14].
Compare their "Preface."
The American Revisers more properly use
"Sheol" throughout.
The etymology of the word is uncertain.
A favorite derivation is from sha'al, "to ask"
[Proverbs 1:12; Proverbs 27:20; Proverbs 30:15-16;
Isaiah 5:14; Habakkuk 2:5];
others prefer the sha'al, "to be hollow."
The Babylonians are said to have a similar word
Sualu, though this is questioned by some.
2. The Abode of the Dead:
Into Sheol, when life is ended, the dead are gathered in
their tribes & families. Hence, the expression frequently
occurring in the Pentateuch, "to be gathered to one's people,"
"to go to one's fathers," etc.
[Genesis 15:15; Genesis 25:8, Genesis 25:17; Genesis 49:33;
Numbers 20:24, Numbers 20:28; Numbers 31:2;
Deuteronomy 32:50; Deuteronomy 34:5].
It is figured as an under-world
[Isaiah 44:23; Ezekiel 26:20, etc.],
& is described by other terms, as "the pit"
[Job 33:24; Psalm 28:1; Psalm 30:3; Proverbs 1:12;
Isaiah 38:18, etc.],
ABADDON [which see] or Destruction
[Job 26:6; Job 28:22; Proverbs 15:11],
the place of "silence" [Psalm 94:17; Psalm 115:17],
"the land of darkness & the shadow of death" [Job 10:21].
It is, as the antithesis of the living condition, the
synonym for everything that is gloomy, inert,
insubstantial [the abode of Rephaim, "shades,"
[Job 26:5; Proverbs 2:18; Proverbs 21:16;
Isaiah 14:9; Isaiah 26:14].
It is a "land of forgetfulness," where GOD's "wonders"
are unknown [Psalms 88:10-12].
There is no remembrance or praise of GOD
[Psalm 6:5; Psalm 88:12; Psalm 115:17, etc.]
In its darkness, stillness, powerlessness, lack of knowledge
& inactivity, it is a true abode of death [see DEATH];
hence, is regarded by the living with shrinking,
horror & dismay [Psalm 39:13; Isaiah 38:17-19],
though to the weary & troubled it may present the
aspect of a welcome rest or sleep
[Job 3:17-22; Job 14:12].
The Greek idea of Hades was not dissimilar.
(1) Not Removed from GOD's Jurisdiction.
It would be yet more erroneous to speak with Dr. Charles
[Eschatology, 35] of Sheol as a region "quite independent
of YAHWE, & outside the sphere of HIS rule."
"Sheol is naked before GOD," says Job,
"& Abaddon hath no covering" [Job 26:6].
"If I make my bed in Sheol," says the Psalmist,
"behold thou art there" [Psalms 139:8].
The wrath of YAHWE burns unto the lowest Sheol
[Deuteronomy 32:22].
As a rule there is little sense of moral distinctions
in the OT representations of Sheol, yet possibly
these are not altogether wanting
[on the above & others points in theology of Sheol].
See ESCHATOLOGY of the OT.
(2) Relation to Immortality.
To apprehend fully the OT conception of Sheol one must
view it in its relation to the idea of death as something
unnatural & abnormal for man; a result of sin.
The believer's hope for the future, so far as this had place,
was not prolonged existence in Sheol, but deliverance
from it & restoration to new life in GOD's presence
[Job 14:13-15; Job 19:25-27; Psalm 16:10,11;
Psalm 17:15; Psalm 49:15; Psalm 73:24-26]
see IMMORTALITY; ESCHATOLOGY OF THE OT;
RESURRECTION].
Dr. Charles probably goes too far in thinking of Sheol
in Psalm 49 & 73 as "the future abode of the wicked only;
heaven as that of the righteous" [op. cit., 74];
but different destinies are clearly indicated.
3. Post-canonical Period:
There is no doubt, at all events, in the postcanonical
Jewish literature [the Apocrypha & apocalyptic writings]
a very considerable development is manifest in
the idea of Sheol.
Distinction between good & bad in Israel is emphasized;
Sheol becomes for certain classes an intermediate state
between death & resurrection;
for the wicked & for Gentiles it is nearly a synonym for
Gehenna [hell].
For the various views, with relevant literature on the
whole subject, see ESCHATOLOGY OF THE NT;

Under Alleytown
Summary: Bruce's Events of the Last Few Hours of Drama
Please mind these content warnings and stay safe:
Canon-typical violence
Minor Unsafe Medical Procedure
Forced but non-sexual nudity
Intimacy Coercion (Joker)
Gotham, Bruce thought. Holding onto that one, brilliant clear thought in the fugue state Wilson had left his head in. I am still in Gotham.
He couldn't be completely certain. The false Batman he had held his ground against- a barely trained, but Lazarus touched bulk of muscle and rage - but Ra's apparent heir, the meticulously trained and fiercely intelligent, Altair tipped the scales. All too much like Tim, Bruce acknowledged as he was driven down and still and finally, into that smoke-streaked limbo between alert and not conscious anymore.
He tried to count the turns. Restraints blunted through his armor. Pain a throbbing storm that ran down his temples into the ocean of his body. Captured glimpses of where he was being brought. Struggling to name this particular part of the city, but recognizing it.
Gotham, he repeated, as he was brought into a terrace house that would probably fall down in a gust of wind. And then. Shining and clear. Alleytown.
Except. Here was the thing.
When exactly had there been a Lazarus lake beneath Gotham's Eastern Boroughs?
Not a pit. A chasm. The seething green being fed and fattened with green-rusting pipes. An underground, cavernous lake. Dread gnawed in his gut as he was shoved past the lake- usually such primordial places, not this... this industrialism?
But he remembered it. Acknowledged the immensity of the cavern, hollowed below Alleytown. Ready to make his report when he got loose-
And he would get loose. He had to get loose. His kids were out there. Dickie was out there. Facing down Slade Wilson who had been both obsession and obsessed. Nemeses were tricky things. And Ra's was involved, Ra's was involved in this.
He was needed. His city needed him, his children, the boy in the concrete box who had done nothing wrong except be a Robin in another universe.
This intel was crucial, but Bruce couldn't stay here. He would tear himself to pieces to escape.
Ra's was a cautious opponent, a few centuries of your own machinations built a healthy suspicion, so Bruce was unsurprised to be stripped. His belt (and pockets, and hidden pockets, and hidden batarangs, and the collapsible sword) had been removed from his person as soon as he'd been contained. What surprised him was that he was not being offered an ostentatious robe, and possibly even Arak, before Ra's deigned to speak with him.
Instead, Bruce was showered down in a tiled room that was stark. Freezing water making his teeth grit, and thoroughly inspected for sub-epidermal trackers- which were removed to confirm their deactivation. A process he 'enjoyed' without anesthetic.
And Ra's never showed himself.
The Joker did, freshly sane from the Lazarus pools- Bruce was beginning to suspect the large one was being fed by a number of sources, though again... questions. He'd been brought by a hooded figure- but one Bruce could now place as Altair -and left with Bruce in the tiled room.
The Joker was not a pleasant companion. All smiles and taunts and guilt peeking through now and then, frustration. Sanity didn't really endear him to Bruce, but he could at least understand. And with little left to hope for, he'd asked, voice raw and honest:
"Help me and let me go," asking with all he had, pride eating a hole inside him, "work with me, Joker."
Jaybird. Jaybird. He was working with the Joker.
"Why should I?"
"...because it's me asking."
Don't think about what that means. Don't think-
"Can I get a kiss?"
Nausea erupted bright and scalding in Bruce's stomach. The drop in his gut. Disgust folded itself away with the shock, and Bruce weighted his options.
Jaybird. The Joker's harassing him in laughs, echoes, a shadow of himself burying a fist in Bruce's gut mid-fight. Jay.
"...yes."
He had to get to the boy in the concrete box, Jay's son. To Dick, suspended like a bird on a string. Tim with his dangerous and potentially obsessive alter-ego. The League's long claws reaching for Damian. The Joker shooting darling Babs, beating Bruce's son to death. The wide breadth of the Lazarus waters he had seen.
He had to.
"Eh, your lips are kinda crusty… No thanks."
Bruce loathed the deep disappointment that bubbled up. The noxious seethe of it. He was still trapped here.

Ask The Right Questions | Vanitas | Trial 1-1 | Re: Lazarus, Kislap
Vanitas arrives at the trial looking like someone who just woke up after passing out twice in the space of an hour, once on the shore of a lake. So, certainly not up to his usual pristine standards, but he’s managed to re-tie his hair back so it’s not a complete mess, and the blood has been mostly cleaned off of him. His gloves are back on, as well.
It takes him a moment of leaning against his podium to gather his thoughts. God, he’s exhausted.
“I can confirm as well that… I was with Lazarus and Irezumi from approximately 9 to 11 for dinner, and I saw Ms. Kislap and Ms. Silence there as well, though I believe they left around an hour before we did. Mr. Sally came in shortly after they had departed. After dinner I went to the library for my usual studying purposes, where I saw Ms. Margarita speaking with Ms. Istina, though I recall she left not long after I arrived. Ms. Espada and Doctor Dog-Head were there for the entire time that I was, as far as I saw. I left some time past 1am, and was on my way back to my room when I… came upon Poppy’s body.”
First order of business, complete. Vanitas takes a breath, and continues.
“All that being said, we should take into account the fact that it appears very likely that Miss Margarita’s body was used as a weapon to kill Poppy. So the actual person responsible may well have been establishing an alibi elsewhere at the time of death. It would perhaps be more helpful if we had been able to determine Miss Margarita’s exact time of death, however I unfortunately lacked the necessary materials and energy to do so.”
“To be clear about why I have come to this conclusion… there were obvious signs of a struggle in the foyer, in terms of cracks on Poppy’s body, damage to her clothing, marks on the wall indicating an aftermath of alchemical transmutation, and a blood trail. Miss Margarita’s body was found with severe injuries that would be consistent with a fight, and she was also holding Poppy’s key in her hand. The removal of Poppy’s key from their back is what would have detached their soul from their body and killed them.”
“So the question as to who killed Poppy can be solved by likewise determining who killed Miss Margarita and planted an enchanted Everblossom in her eye.”

DnD Recap
Here's a recap of everything that's happened from Session 1 (6/5/21) to Session 6 (1/22/22).
But first, the VODs: here
Check us out on Twitch and YouTube!
CW: death, gore
The King has gathered the party and other adventurers to retrieve the Six Jewels of Lazarus for “a grand reward.” The party is sent to head towards Bridegail’s Moor.
Along the way, they encounter Sanders drowning in a river. They argue but keep moving forward, stopping at Ship’s Haven, where a Town Crier announces the death of the illegitimate son of Noblewoman Briar, killed by an adventurer. Mirage investigates the body and finds the face familiar.
They head to the left of Lavender Lake, through Lyansyder territory. They encounter a group of bandits attacking an old man, who turns out to be Bernie Sanders. Bernie Sanders gives the party a token/coin of the Lelt Organization and gloves that punch ogres before Amelia kicks him, and he dies. As they continue onward, the party comes across an abandoned Lyansyder village and a crying child. The child, Fern, doesn’t speak but brings them to an area filled with Amber Lotus Flowers, incapacitating some of the party members. Sanders receives a vision of a young girl named Daphne being bullied for her looks and meeting with a figure that tricked her into something.
A group of people ambushes them, holding the kid hostage and forcing them to come along. They became trapped in a pit, where to escape, Amelia threw Sanders - and then Mirage - up the pit wall. They split up to free the villagers in another pit across from them.
Dolmond, who had been noticeably absent, converses with the Gardener/person pretending to be the Prince of Liene. He seems to make a deal to let them escape, but Sanders is upset and reveals that they’re the Prince of Liene Kingdom.
They end up heading back to the village, where Sanders learns that Daphne is mistakenly worshipped/feared as the Barusta Sun Goddess Jin. After being tricked and turned into a statue by a wandering wizard, the townspeople began to give her offerings, and she grew more and more sentient. The boy (Fern)’s dog was once protected by her, leading him to want to protect her as well. Sanders believes that Daphne is the cause of this and wants to stab her, but they receive news that adventurers are disappearing and then killing people. They must leave and set up camp a little while away, where during the night, their stuff is ransacked/ruined.
As they head towards Bridegail’s Moor, they encounter two separate sets of bandits. Amelia and Sanders nearly die. The bandits have explained that Bridegail’s Moor is “haunted,” and they will die if stay. They encounter a force field at the edge of Bridegail’s Moor and receive a riddle:
“What comes undone,
The second you leave,
And finds itself broken,
With little reprieve?”
Sanders answers with a “T-Shirt,” and the force field lets them in with a warning:
“The true answer is known,
Yet will be denied,
Run all you might,
The true foe is fright.
Leave before dawn,
Or you’ll be reborn a pawn.”
They enter the tower and traverse a maze, befriending Jerry the Skeleton, who later falls down a pit with Amelia. The rest of the party decides to find another way down and find their way through the maze, finding a staircase that leads upwards or downwards.
In the pit, Amelia sees a man and a boy (Bengloria and Fern). The man, noticing Amelia, has his mossdog attack her while he works. Amelia fights the mossdog and loses, dying alone. Mirage, Sanders, and Dolmond are heading down the staircase, but it continues to loop. They try Mould Earth and heading upwards before Mirage hears a giggling spirit that offers to help them. The spirit requires a bell that doesn’t ring, which Mirage gives. The spirit tells them to continue upwards for two more hours and defeat the being at the top to break the loop.
At the top, however, Mirage talks to Ichabod, who demands Mirage and another soul for safe passage. Mirage agrees to come after they retrieve the Jewel of Lazarus. Ichabod destroys an orb, and they all head downwards. When Mirage mentions fire, Dolmond disappears, and the rest of the party finds Amelia’s body in the dungeon. Sanders freaks out while Mirage questions the man, Bengloria, who is only worried for the boy Fern. Ichabod explains that Bengloria must give the Jewel of Lazarous freely, and it cannot be forced from him.
Mirage and Sanders argue about what to do. Ichabod suggests asking for the Jewel politely, and after looking towards Fern, Bengloria gives it to them. Mirage and Sanders once again argue about Amelia's corpse. Mirage takes Amelia's things to give to her family.
Ichabod leads what's left of the party out of the ruins of the tower, and Fern wants to come with Sanders. Once they leave the force field, however, Mirage pays Ichabod off to leave them alone, and Fern suddenly disappears.
Mirage and Sanders head across Lavender Lake on a shady boat for 3 gold per person. They encounter a storm but otherwise arrive in Lysander unharmed. They argue as they travel back to the capital, but in the Capitol City, they encounter Dolmond and Elben, Amelia's brother.
Elben traveled from Mich'en to Tilando Outpost to talk to Uvior Rollant, Amelia's mentor, and meets an upset Dolmond there, who appears to have been tricked into coming. Dolmond receives a wooden box from Uvior and upon learning Elben's relation to Amelia, swears to take him to his sister. They curse Uvior Rollant out and leave.
In the capital city, they receive news of Amelia's death. Sanders is upset with Dolmond, who freaks out at the news. He explains he left to find the one who killed his children before leaving once again.
Elben, unable to bring himself to go home without Amelia, joins what's left of the party.

Warnings may apply, and summaries may be edited from the original.
Summer Blue Skies by @destimushi
RPF - Jensen Ackles/Misha Collins. Complete. Rated E. Part 1 of a series.
The mission was to infiltrate. Jensen knew the consequences of capture, and when it happened, he was ready to die for his country. Misha Collins was the master of torture, and it shouldn’t be difficult to hate him, but the interrogator was hot and cold, and Jensen soon found the boundaries between love and hate blurring.
Between the Folds of Submission by destimushi
Destiel. Complete. Rated E.
Castiel races against the clock as the killer ups the ante, but Dean—rich, drop-dead gorgeous, and a famously unconventional Dominant to boot—proves to be a distraction he can’t afford. As the danger grows, Castiel finds himself torn between upholding his beliefs and giving in to his desires. Can he resist his urges long enough to find the killer, or will his biology consume him?
Music To His Ears by HollyBlue2 @envydean
Destiel. Complete. Rated E.
On the way home from work, Castiel hears the lilting tune of a piano and eventually goes to investigate. When he does he finds his mate in Dean Winchester, who rejects him right off the bat, sending Castiel into a debilitating heat.Ending up in hospital, Castiel and Dean finally meet again...
Lazarus Writing by @jemariel
Destiel. Complete. Rated E.
Castiel is an author struggling to come up with his next novel. Luckily for him, a gift arrives in the mail from his publisher: a fancy new notebook and pen set with a note that promises to “bring new life to your writing”. It’s all fine until Castiel decides to write his grocery list in the back of the book… only to find the items have materialized in the kitchen. So, Castiel is in possession of some freaky magic which could be pretty amazing… if it weren’t for the fact that he just started a new novel in that book and the contents are not something he wants to see in this world....
Five Days in May by Dangerousnotbroken, @kreweofimp
Destiel. Complete. Rated E.
The unseasonable hurricane wasn’t the only force of nature on the beach that night. Dean counts himself lucky that the beautiful blue-eyed stranger was there to save his life. He never could have anticipated that a nameless one-night stand in a tiny storm-tossed shack would change his entire life.
Like Catnip by KreweOfImp
Destiel. Complete. Rated E.
It's one thing to be pissed off that Cas was up late gaming and didn't come to bed when he said he would. And yeah, Cas pretty much figured there was gonna be some sulking and he was gonna have to do some groveling to make up for it. He maybe even could've foreseen the desire for a little revenge.
But did Dean really have to involve the cat?
Cumulonimbus by KreweOfImp
Destiel. Complete. Rated E.
In which Cas watches snow, Dean watches Cas, Sam is a jerk, things get out of hand, and Dean is taken in hand.
Written in the Stars by @lunastories
Destiel. Complete. Rated M.
Castiel, one of the last of the Celestials, descended onto Earth by orders of his garrison leader. What he finds there is the soul he lost long ago, the other part of him that he'd been searching for.
Dean was a normal guy, living his life and trying to take care of his errant researcher brother. When his brother asks him for a favor, claiming that an alien wants to speak to him, he's of course skeptical.
He didn't expect that meeting to change the course of his entire life, throwing him into a war that he wasn't prepared for.
Love me to Death by LunaStories
Destiel. Complete. Rated M.
There once was a man who feared Death.
He feared him so much, he tried to seek immortality but his efforts were in vain. Eventually, he learned to love Death and everything he represented.
This is the story of a mortal and a god and their love for each other.
Mermen and Mistletoe by @robotsnchicks
Destiel. Complete. Rated T.
When Cas draws his long-term crush's name for the office gift exchange, he is determined to find the perfect gift. Unfortunately his co-worker Meg has an unconventional suggestion.
Signs Point To Yes by robotsnchicks
Destiel. Complete. Rated G.
A series of coincidences conspire to remind Dean of his New Year's resolution—To ask Cas out.
Lifestyles of the Weird and Sexy by robotsnchicks
Destiel. Complete. Rated E.Dean's roommate Castiel is a pretty weird dude. He's also hot as hell and Dean might have a bit of a crush on him.The problem is Cas might be a witch. And finding out the truth isn't as easy as Dean thought it would be.
I Don't Know Why by @saltnhalo
Destiel. Complete. Rated E.
Dean gets home from a long job to find a note on his front step. He knows exactly who it's from and what it means; it promises fun and danger and a fucking good time, and there's no way he can turn down this invitation.
He can never say no to the Angel.
Roll With It by saltnhalo
Destiel. Complete. Rated E.
For two years, Dean’s been slaving away beneath his boss – many label him a secretary, but he fucking hates that and feels like it only applies to someone wearing a pencil skirt, so he insists on his title of Executive Assistant. And for what? In the vain hope that one day he’ll manage to become an editor for Sandover Publishing, and that he’ll see the manuscript that he’s slaved over since college finally realized in print.
That’s the dream, anyway.
Right now, he’s fucking late.
From Grace and Uniform by saltnhalo, thepopeisdope
Destiel. Complete. Rated E.
When FBI agent Dean Winchester was first assigned to the Ghost’s case, he was expecting it to be the same as any other serial killer hunt--frustrating dead ends, a trail of bodies, unending paperwork. What he wasn’t expecting was for it to be interrupted by a mysterious alpha calling himself Cas, knowing far too much about him and offering up not just a lead, but concrete information on his mother’s killer.
As the two set off in search of justice for Mary Winchester and the countless other victims of Azazel Masters, Dean struggles to come to grips with himself. Despite his whirlwind attraction to Cas, he knows that exposing himself to his colleagues as an omega instead of the beta he pretends to be would be a mistake. Nothing can happen between the two of them; not without Dean losing everything he knows.
Waiting in the Wings by @seraphwrites
Destiel. Complete. Rated T.
Castiel an injured hunter stumbles into a town and meets an angel who may just have be having the same rotten luck he is. Written for the Hey, Sweetheart 2018 challenge.
spinning (series) by @reallyelegantsharkfish
Destiel. Complete. Rated T-M.
“Listen up!” Dean hollers, louder than necessary in the small space. “We are spinnin’ this bottle, and then we’re going to do some kissin’! Happy New Year!”
suckerfish (series) by sharkfish
Destiel. Complete. Rated E.
At some point in the last couple of months, Dean became friends with the monster in the lake.
traveling light by sharkfish
Destiel. Complete. Rated E.
Cas is, impossibly, far more gorgeous in person, and he’s taller than Dean expected, and he moves with this casual grace that makes Dean’s brain short circuit.
So Dean thinks he probably looks a little like a deer in the headlights when Cas catches his eyes from the door of the restaurant. He breaks out into a smile, the full, wide one that never came out in his pictures, and Dean actually goes weak in the knees. “Cas,” Dean says.
“Hello, Dean,” Cas says.
Sealed lips. Tied hands. by @sternchenchas
Destiel. Complete. Rated G.
Dean Winchester doesn't look forward to his first day of school, but it's not because of your usual teenager problems. He would be glad if he had to deal with dates, grades and rumors about his love life. Instead, he struggles even to communicate. In a world where everyone talks in sign language, his hands are tied. He's a happer. One of those weird people who have a hard time figuring out what others say, and can't express what they want to tell. But one good deed might save him because he helps Castiel Novak. A boy who might be just as different and weird as Dean. A boy who understands even when Dean's lips are sealed.
Reality of Dreams by sternchencas
Destiel. Complete. Rated E.
Dean Winchester has been living a boring life. At least until his brother is missing, the police think he has something to do with it, and a group of people who call themselves 'Liberi Somniorum' and live in an underground bunker ask him to join them so they can teach him how to use his dreaming abilities. As if that isn't bad enough, the police also took his car and then there's this guy in a trenchcoat who's guarding him, and some dark secret. Dean does his best to convince himself it's a dream. But somehow, sometimes, dreams can be very real, and this time, he just can't wake up.
Porch Light by @surlybobbies
Destiel. Complete. Rated N/A.
Before he could think too much about it, Dean had reached over his duffel bag and skated his knuckles across Cas’s cheek, just once, before dropping his hand and his gaze. “I’ll leave the porchlight on for you,” he had mumbled.
(Dean and Cas reunite in Lawrence after meeting in Boston 6 months prior.)
Brambles by surlybobbies
Destiel. Complete. Rated T.
“You like the dirty mechanic look, Cas?” Dean says, winking.Cas steps back to let him in. “Not particularly.”
Dean’s grin falls. He swipes an arm over his sweaty forehead. “Well, get used to it, bud, ‘cause I’m your neighborhood dirty mechanic on the days I’m not the neighborhood drunken arsonist.”
Criminality by surlybobbies
Destiel. Complete. Rated T.
In which Dean accidentally breaks into and falls asleep in Cas's car, and Cas accidentally kidnaps the stranger who had been eyeing him all night at the bar.
