13 kwietnia przypada rocznica urodzin jednego z najoryginalniejszych i najbardziej niepokojących malarzy przełomu XIX i XX wieku – Jamesa Sidney'a Ensora. Urodzony w 1860 roku w belgijskim Ostendzie, przez całe życie pozostał wierny miastu, które stało się jego największą inspiracją i scenerią niepokojących wizji. Jego sztuka, pełna groteski, masek, widm i komentarzy społecznych, stanowiła pomost między symbolizmem, ekspresjonizmem a początkiem modernistycznej krytyki społecznej. James Ensor to artysta, którego warto dziś przypomnieć i zrozumieć – nie tylko jako pioniera ekspresjonizmu, ale jako człowieka wyprzedzającego swój czas.

Wczesne lata i edukacja

Ensor urodził się w zamożnej rodzinie o korzeniach angielsko-belgijskich. Jego ojciec, James Frederic Ensor, był dobrze wykształconym inżynierem, ale życie rodzinne szybko zdominowała matka – właścicielka sklepu z pamiątkami i maskami karnawałowymi, które później odegrały fundamentalną rolę w twórczości artysty. Już jako nastolatek Ensor przejawiał niechęć do formalnej edukacji, przerywając naukę w wieku piętnastu lat. W latach 1877–1880 studiował na Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Brukseli, gdzie zaprzyjaźnił się z Fernandem Khnopffem i zetknął się z ówczesną sztuką akademicką – z którą szybko się zbuntował.

Droga ku artyzmowi i kontrowersjom

Początkowo Ensor tworzył realistyczne pejzaże, portrety i martwe natury w ciemnej, stonowanej kolorystyce. Jednak pod wpływem impresjonistów, jego paleta rozjaśniła się, a tematyka zaczęła ewoluować w kierunku surrealistyczno-symbolicznym. Kluczowym momentem w jego twórczości stały się lata 80. XIX wieku – wtedy Ensor zaczął tworzyć swoje najbardziej znane, groteskowe i satyryczne dzieła. Prace takie jak Intryga (1890), Autoportret wśród masek (1899) czy majestatyczny obraz Wjazd Chrystusa do Brukseli (1888) budziły kontrowersje i często były odrzucane przez ówczesnych krytyków sztuki.

„Wjazd Chrystusa do Brukseli” – manifest artystyczny

Jednym z najważniejszych dzieł Ensora, uważanym dziś za arcydzieło europejskiego ekspresjonizmu, jest monumentalny obraz Wjazd Chrystusa do Brukseli. Na gigantycznym płótnie (ponad 9 metrów szerokości!), w tłumie groteskowych postaci i polityków z maskami, niemal ginie postać Chrystusa, wjeżdżającego na osiołku. Obraz ten jest nie tylko satyrą na belgijskie społeczeństwo, ale też metaforą samotności artysty niezrozumianego przez tłum. Obraz został odrzucony przez grupę Les XX, której Ensor był członkiem, i przez długie lata nie był wystawiany. Dopiero w 1929 roku obraz ujrzał światło dzienne – dziś znajduje się w J. Paul Getty Museum w Los Angeles.

Maska jako symbol społeczeństwa

Motyw maski, tak często obecny w twórczości Ensora, nie był dla niego tylko ozdobą wizualną. Maski stanowiły metaforę społecznych masek – fałszywości, hipokryzji, pogardy wobec indywidualizmu. Inspiracją były maski karnawałowe sprzedawane w sklepie jego matki, a także same wydarzenia karnawałowe w Ostendzie. Ensor ukazywał maski nie tylko na twarzach ludzi, ale też jako samodzielnych aktorów groteskowego teatru absurdu i chaosu. W dziełach takich jak Szkielety walczące o wisielca (1891), przedstawiał świat jako scenę pełną przebrań i zniekształceń tożsamości.

Ensor jako grafik i pisarz

Poza malarstwem, Ensor był również znakomitym grafikiem. W ciągu swojej kariery stworzył ponad 130 akwafort i suchorytów, z czego większość powstała między 1886 a 1891 rokiem – w szczytowym okresie jego artystycznych poszukiwań. Dzieła graficzne, często były bardziej bezpośrednie w przekazie niż obrazy – pozwalały mu na eksperyment i szybką reakcję na społeczne wydarzenia. Mimo początkowego odrzucenia przez środowisko artystyczne, Ensor z czasem zyskał rozgłos i szacunek. W 1929 roku otrzymał tytuł barona z rąk króla Alberta I, a w 1933 został odznaczony francuską Legią Honorową. Mimo że jego twórczość po 1920 roku uznawana jest za mniej oryginalną, kilka późnych dzieł – jak Port w Ostendzie (1933) czy Śmierć matki artysty (1915) – ukazuje, że jego talent nie wygasł całkowicie. Do końca życia spacerował po ulicach Ostendy, stając się lokalną legendą. Zmarł 19 listopada 1949 roku, w wieku 89 lat.

Your brain will recognize signs that one believes are from the universe.

Its faith to know that any of this coincidental symbolism is from a source bigger than even your brain can conclude.

Then there the strongest human emotion of fear. You have to provoke fear when casting a spell. You have to haunt and a little hypnotic.

Magik is chaotic and you never know how it will turn out. However, If you follow the wiccan rule of do no harm, you will not be violent even when haunting yourself and casting a spell. You will not hex, you will not use blood magik satanically.

Magik is beautiful and society rules say one cannot know how it works because it will be used satanically.

I sometimes cut myself a little after a spell on accident and i think its a product of hypnosis. what if i actually spill alot of blood. this is why you have to be carful of how your hypnotizing and letting into your subconscious.

when I cast a spell I'm usually just meditation and practicing positive thinking but with a little twist. Maybe a nice but spooky voice let the universe know what you want. Put it in a song, make a craft about it. write a song about it.

Nobody needs to know your art work and meditations are actually spell work. it will be our little secret.

Just so other nerds know - Nerevarine's outfit is inspired by Babylonian clothing and golden leaves on his head are partially inspired by Puabi's headpiece. She was a queen or a priestess in the city of Ur. This city's patron deity, or one might say the Ur's divine ruler was Nanna (in Sumerian) or Sin (in accadian), a moon god, both the anthropomorphic deity and the moon itself. Fun little coincidence - i've named my first and only Nerevarine of 8+ years ''Moon" long ago, before i even knew what's happening in the game, bc i adore the Moon and her symbolizm. ALSO ALSO…. Sin/Nanna was punishing oathbreakers by skin diseases which reminds me of the Azura changing dunmer's skin color to grey. Ash of Nerevarine's skin is cracked to reveal the gold inside - his past life shines through him. Anyways i've put a lot of care into this one and as a result it's still the best drawing i've ever made imo
