Unrequested fun fact about Sylvia:

Despite being the literal daughter of Vincent van Gogh, she can't speak a word of Dutch. On the other hand, since she was brought up by W. D. Gaster when he was still trapped in the Void, she can express herself fluently in Wingdings and only learned Italian (and then English) when she crashed at Elise's place.

Later on, she learned that the border between life and death would get particularly thin throughout the course of October, becoming non-existent in the period between October 28th and November 2nd, being the only time of the year she can spend time with her parents in the afterlife. For this reason, she took it upon herself to learn Spanish and how to move around Spanish-speaking countries on el Dia de los muertos (this makes her partaking in the Festival of the Lost, being the Last City located in South America, all the more relevant with the land imbued with tradition).

Im asking this in the most respectful way possible and I’m not trying to be rude i’m genuinely asking. That being said, why do you like Sylvia Plath so much…?

I kinda get it, I understand why so many young girls and women relate to her. Her writing is beautiful, and the way she struggled with mental health and tackled that in her writing is very important. But the blatant racism is fucking absurd. I understand she grew up in a time were that was normal but in this time we are in now it is not. For me, her racism diminishes all of her work. so… why do you and so many young girls look up to someone who had white supremacy woven into almost all of her writing? She is remembered as a feminist but you cannot be feminist and racist.

WITH THIS BEING SAID; I also understand that people can enjoy art with its problems. So many artists are problematic, and If I obviously said this about everything a lot of philosophers and writers would be targeted. I’m not talking about indulging in these peoples work, analyzing, or reading critically. I’m talking about the low-key idolization of people like this. I see almost this kind of cult around her.

I’m chinese, (realized very quickly I was not her audience) I think there is nothing wrong with being familiar with her work but idolizing her is a weird level to be on. And i’m not saying you are I’m just asking IF you are..? Please tell me that I have been taking how you write about her out of context. That i’m being dramatic, that i’m out of line and need to screw my head back on. I love your blog and want to keep following you but I guess i’m just a little confused. I just hope you are aware if you know what i mean😭😭..

if i may, i think we need to detangle a few wires that have gotten very jumbled in the tumblr group-brain re: plath, girlhood, racism, and the dangerous performance art that is “idolisation.”

so. let’s start at the root. do i “idolise” sylvia plath? no. not really. the woman was a literary genius and also a white woman in the 50s with all the predictable rot that entails. her racism wasn’t a glitch in the code. it was in the operating system. and that’s not something i excuse or erase. i read her with that. through that. if anything, the awareness of her racism complicates her writing in ways that make it even more necessary to approach her with scalpels not sunflowers.

yes, she said horrific things. yes, “daddy” is riddled with german fetishism and a casualness about trauma that would not fly in today’s discourse. you’re right. she was not writing for you. she wasn’t writing for me either. but she was writing something so raw, so flayed and girlish and furious, that it cracked the door open for girls like me to scream back. and maybe that’s what people are responding to. not sylvia the woman. sylvia the threshold.

plath is not the final form. she’s the training wheels for girls learning to metabolise their pain through language. and then we move on. we read anne carson. we read audre lorde. we read kim hyesoon. we get smarter. we learn to read sideways and diagonally and upside-down. but you never forget your first bruise. and plath, for a lot of girls, she’s that bruise.

and i get the discomfort around the aesthetic of it all. the bell jar tote bags. the pastel edits. the “i am. i am. i am.” tattoos in typewriter font. it’s nauseating sometimes. but you know what else is nauseating: asking young women to grieve prettily. to mourn “appropriately.” to only love “perfect” thinkers with flawless politics and peer-reviewed trauma.

sometimes girlhood is ugly. sometimes it's aligning with the wrong patron saints. sometimes it's loving the person who hurt you. sometimes it's holding space for someone whose work changed your life and whose worldview makes you want to vomit. and that doesn’t make us stupid. it makes us literate.

i’m not here to say sylvia plath was a good person. she wasn’t. i’m not even here to say you should like her. you don’t have to. but don’t confuse the cult with the cathedral. some of us are here to pray. some of us are here to disassemble the altar. and some of us are just trying to survive the fire in our own heads by borrowing someone else’s words for a minute. that's not idolisation. that’s survival. that’s literacy.

also. respectfully. i think we need to stop acting like plath invented problematic genius. if we can critically read baudrillard and dazai and mishima and nabokov without losing our lunch, we can handle sylvia plath. she’s not some sort of white supremacist sorceress. she’s a dead poet with issues and a killer metaphor game. let’s be real.

CAGE & CORDELIA'S WEDDING OCTOBER 19, 2024

Themed with a little bit of rustic country glamour, the colors for Cage & Cordelia's wedding are cranberry and tones of peach and cream, with the flowers ranging from red sunflowers to roses, dahlias, peonies and hydrangeas, with others mixed into the arrangements. The ceremony is taking place on their countryside farm, with lots of natural wood and antique pieces, and beautiful fresh florals. | RECEPTION POST

In lieu of full wedding parties, the bride (Cordelia Newman) and groom (Cage Newman) chose to get ready with friends and family at their home. They were assisted by Sylvia Cuenco-Burke for hair, Elena Vazquez for make-up, and Nari Gim and Arturo Vasco for fashion assistance.

To start the ceremony, Colton Newman will walk his little sister, Rosalyn Newman down the aisle as she tosses flower petals. The bride chose to walk herself down the aisle to an instrumental version of Love Story, where the groom's brother, Kellan Newman will officiate the ceremony, and the bride and groom will share personal vows with one another. After sharing a kiss, the officiant is to invite everyone to stick around for the reception.

Photography will be handled by younger sister, Lucie Newman, and Stelly Carter. Live music provided by a local string band, and flowers were purchased from Lavender Lane. Special thanks to the gals of Memorable Affairs, Kennedy Warren & Eliana Vagh.

OOC THINGS: while we want this event to be as much fun for you guys as it is for us, we do ask that everyone please be respectful of the fact that this is a wedding, taking place on someone's private property! It's that time of year again -- Creek Fest! The tents and booths are all set up, the tractors full of hay and ready to cart you around, and we here in Merrock and at Hideaway Market are ready to welcome in fall the best way that we know how! Big to note: both the Merrock Community College and Merrock School District have decided to close on Thursday (September 26th) and Friday (September 27th) to give families more time to enjoy the event.

All of Hideaway Market is open for the week, with many of the shops and businesses offering specials and sales if you stop in. Some even have refreshments or gifts for the kids! All around the market place, you will find food and drink tents and booths and tents full of local goodies brought out by our own Merrockites. Plenty to eat and drink, and lots of shopping to be done!

For the kids, we recommend checking out the corn pit, participating in the scavenger hunt, getting their faces painted (adults are welcome, too!), jumping in on a game of corn hole, or taking a walk over to The Meadows, where a number of 'sports stations' have been set up for kids and adults alike who want to play.

For the adults (or kids looking to do something more mature), we have plenty of things for you to get involved in. You can paint or carve your own pumpkins, stuff your own scarecrows, make wreaths and flower arrangements, decorate fall themed t-shirts or paint your own ceramics! Lavender Lane has also opened their seasonal operation, where they will be selling mums, pumpkins and various other fall flowers and plants.

The tractor will be available to take people to Harmony Ranch where you can jump into the corn maze or sunflower maze, buy your dairy products and fresh produce, or visit the petting zoo and pony rides! You can also take a tractor to Sunrise Orchard to pick all of the apples that your heart can ever want.

And of course, the name sake of Creek Fest -- Black Creek's walking trails have been freshened up and marked, so you can take a hike with your honey to see the falls, or maybe get your photos taken by one of our local photographers at one of the more scenic spots. We are also selling t-shirts, mugs, bags and more 'souvenir style' gifts at the Historical Society booth, with proceeds going towards the conservation and upkeep of our beautiful creek. If you need help while wandering the grounds, stop by the Community Center tent.

What’s your favorite poem of all time?

Of all time it would probably be Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost. Basic I know but living in New England I feel really connected to Frost’s work.
