I think it goes without saying that Light is Dorian and Misa is Sybil in a The Picture of Dorian Gray comparison, but Ryuk is not actually Lord Henry but rather part of what Lord Henry wants himself to be (he fails at it miserably, in the end), while Basil and L are the most akin to each other in the specific kind of fanon mischaracterizations they receive. the two of their actual characters are nothing alike but also surprisingly comparable but ultimately probably not that similar. do you guys understand what I mean

I was rereading The picture of Dorian Gray awhile ago, and not only does some things make better sense when trying to see the LGBTQ side of the story, but it makes me realize just how scary Dorian Gray as a character actually is.

By that I mean, he's had several relationships with both men and women, and has ruined all of them. Its obvious for women who, if they elope, are ruined for life and have their prospects for marraige destroyed, but a lot of men are not safe either, especially if them being gay can be used against them. But there was another scare factor I never considered until now (but I'm sure experts likely beat me to this).

I read that its more than likely Dorian had some STDS after a certain point and while he does feel the effects, his body obviously isn't showing it because everything that effects his physical appearance gets transfered to the painting. I recalled a story about someone like him who seemed physically fine, but knowingly infected people he was with with STDS, and that fit Dorian too well. That, plus having the AIDS scare in mind adds to just how scary Dorian is, and even if he knew, he probably wouldn't have cared because the man wants to fulfill his needs regardless of if they can be provided by a man or woman.

Part of the horror is the realization of just how far he ruined the lives of so many. The other part is him getting away with it and society still accepting him to a degree because of the 'a beautiful person can't be evil' mindset at the time.

Also, the fact that Sybil and Basil–two characters who loved Dorian and paid the price for it–were both artistic souls doesn't escape me. Neither was the fact that their talents would be unintentionally used against them and would involve Dorian to an extent (Basil creating the painting that cuased so much trouble, and Sybil who was only loved for her talents as an actress, and did a terrible performance on purpose in a misguided attempt to get her happy ever after.)

This took a while to be finally completed, I got busy with school and felt relatively unmotivated to finish the piece.

Looking at it now, an hour after finishing, the style change between Dorian and Basil vs Sybil and Henry on the side is a bit abrupt, but I can’t be bothered to change it lol
