what would have been really interesting for a dghda s3 plot would be to have riggins come back to maybe help dirk, or is part of the case and is connected enough that they kind of have to deal with eachother again

i love all the blackwing plots, all the government bad guys like freidkin priest etc., they all gave a more extreme idea of blackwing (and i think that was important to really unveil how traumatic blackwing was when the projects were kids) but after season 1 riggins was never seen again!

but I think what would make blackwing worse would be this old sweet looking man that seems caring, and seems like you can trust him. it has a unique effect psychologically of growing up in this overtly violent and dangerous place, and even the one part you feel safe around is secretly the man in charge of it all.

like in S1E3 when the two meet again, there's already so much emotion in it that you can tell sooooo much shit went down that even in s2 was not explored enough.

like, its one thing to grow up terrified of priest and everything, but I bet you dirk was so trusting of riggins in the past, until some big thing happened that completely flipped that feeling of safety

ALSOOOOo adding a reunion in s3 would make for such emotional, well-done scenes from Samuel Barnett. like mentioning S1E3 again, its onnly the third episode of the entire series, we know nothing about dirk at this time yet Sam's subtle emotions are so compelling. I would give my left leg to have a scene where after so much emotion from having to deal with riggins again builds up and one day dirk just snaps and it gets like heated. idk i think dirks anger really needs more of a spotlight sometimes

im realizing now that ~~maybe i just have daddy issues and something about dirk finally airing his grievances at essentially his father figure would make me so happy~~ but i wish people talked more about riggins! he and dirk have such a dynamic relationship that would be so well done on screen omfg

I was reading the dghda show bible to research something and in Dirk's character description there was this sentence:

"The English accent, though real, isn't the foreign lilt he was born with."

And I'm like huh? Isn't this contradictory? Does it mean that his original accent is English, but not the one he speaks now? Or that his mother tongue is a whole another language but his British accent is also authentic because he lived there? Someone help me out.

But also very possibly queer, disabled, neurodivergent (and i don't just mean that as in autism & adhd), mentally ill, etc (maybe intersex but that's not really my place to decide)- Anything that isn't "standard" can be projected as a possible reading of the blackwing subjects, especially things that people are often persecuted, villainised or discriminated against for being. Dirk and the rest of em are all of course most commonly read simply as who and what they are, though, because there is plenty of value and relatability in that.

........Another unrelated tangent: Dirk absolutely has darkish red hair in my head, even though that doesn't look to be his hair colour for most of the show- i think i've seen others talk about his mysterious hair colour too. And i have read a fic where he had "mood ring" hair, ive loved that sorta stuff for years (when i was into beetlejuice the musical i always drew beej with hair that changed colour depending on mood <3<3) so that's definitely a fantastic headcanon to me-

“Marzanna does…death. And,” she makes a vague gesture at the surrounding forest, “cold and stuff. Kinda a bad omen, or at least, that’s what they wanted me to be when they named me after her. Witchers aren’t omens, not good ones or bad ones.” In a sudden, streamlined movement, she pulls out her knife and splits the cloth beneath the troublesome knot, slicing it cleanly free before thrusting the blade back in its sheath. “We just are. So. I’m Bart.”

“Oh, that’s deep. That is excellent.” Dirk shifts to pull a scrap of parchment and quill from his satchel, hastily scribbling what he remembers of her phrasing. The ink shines as it dries, and he studies the words, reading them over.

“My name wasn’t always Dirk, you know,” he says, and lets the wind rustle the words away. She’ll hear him anyway, enhanced senses and all that. “I was once called —” He falters, swallows, and pulls the blanket tighter around his shoulders. “I once had the name Svlad Cjelli.”

In the fire-dance of shadow and light, the furrow of Bart’s brow deepens to encompass her whole forehead. “Oh yeah? What happened to it?”

“It was taken from me,” Dirk says, tucking the parchment back into his satchel. “Same as you.”

I don't super remember what the director's cut thing this is in response to said to do, but basically, this bit is hinting at some background worldbuilding where in this crossover verse, Blackwing is still out there trying to understand and control gifted people, among other horrors. They altered Bart's powers trying to create their own witcher who would serve their ends, but ofc that did not go well for them. And Dirk has a similar backstory to dghda canon, such as it is, getting taken and held and then getting out; in this witcher verse he then spends his time wandering, slowly pulled along by the strings of fate. Because Blackwing's witcher program was kept separate, they don't know each other or recognize that they're haunted by the same ghostly cage :P

THE INTERCONNECTNESS OF THINGS

The late great Douglas Adams (who shared my birthday, March 11th — I’m sure that means something, but I have no idea what) created a character that I dearly love. Dirk Gently (also known by a number of other names, including Svlad Cjelli), was the owner/operator of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. It operated based on the “fundamental interconnectedness of all things.” I believe in…

Lately, this long-ish headcannon surrounding Dirk and language and backstory has just been a needle in my brain so bear with me:

So we all know Dirk’s birth name is Romanian, but what if he was taken from his parent(s) in Romania at a young age by Blackwing, and isn’t like a British citizen by birth. Considering the Cold War tensions going on in Romania at the time, it’s not implausible for the CIA to have been operating there to have taken Dirk in. Dirk is written to be in his 30s in 2016 when Season 1 is set, so he would be born roughly 1986 at the latest. This means he would be a child during the upheaval of the Romanian Revolution and the nation’s separation from the Eastern Bloc, after which US-Romanian relations began to open up and eventually deepen. Knock knock. Here comes Blackwing.

Then you have young Dirk, who is taken to HQ America, and is basically forced to adapt and quickly develop full fluency in English just like Riggins and all of the people conducting these experiments. Conversely, Dirk would have likely experienced language attrition because he’s still at a developmental age and is completely isolated from other Romanian speakers. When the breach happens, he has no idea where his family is, and if they are still even alive (I’m eyeing you, Osmund Priest) he has no means of contacting or finding them. It’s been so long and he was torn from them so young and the details have all blurred together. But he also needs to escape America and it’s nasty connotations with Blackwing, and his former life back home died. And his birth name along with it.

So what does he do? Moves to England and chooses the name with a Scottish dagger of a feel to it, studies at St. Cedd’s and tries to find his footing while establishing himself away from Blackwing. He tries to adopt a British accent to make English, which he never had a choice in, something of his own and not sound like Blackwing. The accent and the lifestyle stick and he becomes naturalized in the UK over time and under his chosen name. Eventually, the rest is history.

And maybe one day the detective agency get a client who speaks Romanian and it triggers a whole slew of conflicting emotions in Dirk, where it sounds like the home he was torn from once was. And through the case he finds a way to reconnect with that element of his past or finds some of the closure he needs with it along the way.
