The Library, Pt. 1
I smudged my eyeliner
And spilled my tears on a hardcover
Forgive me, Simone de Beauvoir
I never meant to hurt you
I've scrolled through books of love and death
Kierkegaard y José Gasset...

The college that Betty went to was University of Washington in Seattle. The lecture hall that Simon presented at was "Balmer Hall". There used to be a building that was called that, but it was torn down. It did, however, look completely different. I thought this was a red herring until I looked up the library at the University of Washington, Suzzallo Library, and it is 1:1 to the one depicted in the show. Upon writing this I realized I should just post to Reddit but I barely post there so idk

okay so are we gonna talk about how fionna and cake's world is seattle? the library that simon and betty met at is a perfect dupe of suzzallo library on the university of washington seattle campus and the skyline of the city fionna is living in has the space needle in it. seattle lives rent free in simon's head.
this of course is then INCREDIBLY ICONIC that simon becomes ice king because the most common seattle social phenomenon is called "seattle freeze"

It is only well after I left college that I figured out the fun of finding reasons to 'research' things. The treasure hunt of digging for something not easily found online. I'm not creative (or curious) enough for this to come up often but am delighted when I get the chance to explore the depths of a library's offerings.

It's also rewarding to chase down a tight run of connections. This week's has been Dicken's Fair -> a musical about "The Naming of Uranus" -> reading about historical lady mathematicians -> visiting the Suzzallo library -> getting to use the Micro Print machine!
I'm perhaps known amongst some friends for my love of pushing the printing limits in making mini books. Imagine my awe and delight at getting to hold a micro print page! Now THIS would make a tiny book!

100 pages per sheet and absolutely not legible with the naked eye! Pages were brought into focus (on the digital screen) by panning the tray about. Not only easy to use, it made reading more fun! The book I wanted was actually missing the first sheet- thankfully there was a scanned copy I could read on a library machine -- interesting to see the aged pages in the 'digital' version, but I much preferred reading the micro print (even though it too was delivered to me 'digitally' at the end)

If I'd brought my Moment macro lens I could have taken some sweet photos (and read on my phone!) -- my new Pixel 8's macro mode just barely makes the text legible.
The initial bio on Mary Somerville I read mentioned that her writing was accessible and after reading a chunk of it for 20 minutes I heartily agree. Initially published in 1834, I'm sure there's a couple copies floating around out there (the library does have a physical copy, but it's at the off-site auxiliary and requires planning/advanced notice to get ahold of) -- makes me happy to now have a title to keep an eye out for in those rare bookshops/the collectables field.

In the book, the Suzzallo library on campus was described as being “musty” and their rooms as “dank” and like I can only imagine how awful that had to be for Bobby because I’m preeeetty sure those are triggers for asthma.

✨Welcome to the SUZALLO LIBRARY in Seattle, USA
Located on the University of Washington's campus in Seattle, the Suzzallo Library is a magnificent example of Collegiate Gothic architecture. With its grand reading room often likened to the hall of Hogwarts, it's a place where scholars and dreamers alike can immerse themselves in academic pursuits and literary wonder.

Tacoma, WA Event Location: Tacoma Art Museum Event Type: Fundraiser (Lunch provided) Event Time: 13:00 - 16:00 PT *The campaign held a fundraiser at the museum in an effort to bring together some of the down ballot races and ours, while securing funding for many of us.
Seattle, WA Event Location: University of Washington Suzzallo Library Event Type: Listening Tour (Dinner provided) Event Time: 19:00 - 22:00 PT *The campaign welcomed assistant district attorneys, assistant attorneys general, and county sheriffs to come and share some of their experiences as law enforcement officials with our campaign. I'm back! After an inspiring journey of nature therapy (which I'll tell you all about soon), I'm ready to dive into a new season of fantasy photoshoots and finally reimagine my backlog.
To kick things off, here's a new image I created for the upcoming O-Jak Bridge Art & Dance Festival 2024.
This year’s theme is a unique adaptation of the timeless tales from One Thousand and One Nights. It immediately reminded me of a photoshoot I did with my lovely friend Mariam in the hallways of Suzzallo Library. She was gracefully twirling in her vibrant red Indian-Pakistani bridal dress, and I remember thinking, "Wouldn't it be amazing if I could transform this into an Arabian moonlight dream?" And voilà, this is how I envision the final image.
My talented friend @mikkukfriend worked hard on this show. Please join us at O-Jak Bridge Festival 2024 for a magical evening inspired by the tales of Scheherazade from One Thousand and One Nights on Nov 16th & 17th, 2024. 'EARLYBIRD' 10% discount now through Sep 29th. Learn More @ojak_bridge_festival 2024 Represented by @mmdc_dance_company @adageballetacademy
