Great talk with the students of Benjamin Cardozo High School on zero-wasting and living a sustainable life! . . . There are 4,000 students who attend this school. Imagine the number of plastic forks that are used each day at lunch! Little things like simply bringing a fork from home would divert more than 720,000 plastic forks from landfill every year! Zero-waste can sound intimidating, but it really comes down to the little things each day that make a huge difference 🌎 ☮️ . . . . #zerowaste #vegan #zerowasteliving #lowwaste #lowimpact #sustainability #sustainableschools #kidsarethefuture #environment #plasticfree #strawssuck #greenliving #leavebehindabetterworld #doyourpart #bethechange (at Benjamin N. The Power of a Teacher
Tumblr media
“We are taking you home with us. We are taking what you taught us back to our villages and we will remember what you taught us when we teach.”
Teachers shared with me that they were taking me back to their home villages throughout Shan State because I had shared with them a piece of my heart and passion for education. Although they physically couldn’t take me back with them, I felt humbled that the training I facilitated, led them on a journey of self-discovery and recognizing the value they have as a person and as a teacher in their communities, which happen to be in some of the most difficult places on earth.
It was the final hour of a four day teacher development training.  A time of farewell, thanksgiving, and testimony.  One teacher stood up and expressed her gratitude to me for taking the time to encourage, empower, and equip Shan teachers. Another teacher told me that she never knew she could ask students questions to elicit thinking or give children choices when managing behaviors. One teacher shared that she realized for the first time how important and influential her role was in the community.  That her influence as a teacher can impact not only students, but families and entire communities.  My message was this:  social transformation begins with the teacher.
This training was the result of an invitation by the Shan State school representatives for me to come and train Shan teachers at one of our Partners locations.  It was an incredible experience, not only for me in the role of teaching and training teachers, but as a learner myself.  My philosophy is that a teacher is also a student and a student can also become a teacher.  I learned so much about these teachers and the political, social, and educational challenges they face.  Over four days, I guided 100 teachers through a teacher development training, which is basically in it’s essence, self-actualization of oneself as a teacher and leader in the community and the transformative impact they can have.
From Western education perspectives, the teachers in many parts of Myanmar are unqualified and unequipped to be teachers. It is a part of the world where receiving an education means mastery of rote memorization instead of learning critical thinking skills. In these places there are various ages and educational levels in one class in a small wooden hut. Some of the teachers don’t even have access to paper...literally drawing out lessons in the dirt.  Some don’t have chairs or desks and the class sits on the dirt floor covered in rattan mats.
Qualifications don’t matter when a teacher is one of the only village leaders in the community.  Out of necessity they become teachers in these rural villages across Shan State and many have little education, beginning their duty as “teacher” as young as thirteen, only children themselves.
Some teachers traveled 3-4 days within Shan State to attend this training... which means crossing through military checkpoints and traveling by foot through dusty roads and dense jungle, in trucks and in some cases, by boat.
I encouraged the teachers to fully take advantage of the opportunity they had to interact with each other, sharing each others’ experiences, what is and isn’t working with their teaching methods.  A teacher’s greatest resource is each other.  I spent a majority of this sacred time facilitating and guiding activities to promote conversations and critical thinking among the teachers.  I also modeled and gave examples of what I hoped they were learning in and through my teaching. I firmly believe teachers should also have fun, so we played some teamwork games and role played how to manage undesired behaviors which was hilarious!
I felt like I learned more from them than they probably did from me.  I was inspired and changed.  I was humbled by their testimonies.  Simply, that my being there to facilitate a training impacted them and they want to change their communities through education, one step at a time.  My future hope is to take this training to more of the areas Partners is involved with.
Sara previously taught primary students at an International school in Chiang Mai and now teaches adults at SEED. She enjoys exploring the markets and the Thai mountains, although quite different from the mountains of her Colorado home in the States.

What's On Campus: Project @orosnetwork (Operation Rain Or Shine), the Green School’s student project funded with the ZAYED Future Energy Prize @zfep is nearly finished! Can’t wait until it is entirely in shape like the design. -- The dome-shaped structure will be our energy hub that controls the energy in the entire school and also a place where students can learn about sustainable energies. -- The igloo-shaped building was inspired by an eco-house, built with earth-bags, the rice bags filled with sand mixture. The house absorbs all the heat from the sunshine at daytime so it wouldn’t be hot at daytime nor cold at nights. It acts as a natural temperature controller. . . . . #thisisgreenschool #greenschoolbali #sustainableschool #whatsoncampus #renewablenergy #educationforsustainability #sustainable #zfep2017 #studentproject #energyhub (à Green School)

Good News: March 2019
This world is chock-full of bad news. We get that. As people of faith, we look for Good News wherever we can. This is what we’ve found...
Tumblr media
More Syrian Kids Back in Class
The schools in Syria are being rebuilt so rapidly we can barely keep up. Bless God. Our staff on the ground interviewed Ahmed, a 13-year-old who attends the new school. Here is what he has to say about his new school:
We thank the teachers and teachers that they prepared for us the school and my joy is indescribable and thank each one participated in preparing the school ... I love the lesson of Arabic, playing football with my friends and I hope to become a veterinarian.”
Tumblr media
Let The Growing Begin
Last month our team in Bangladesh distributed 50 infant nutrition packs, 50 mosquito nets and 250 food packs to Rohingya refugees who continue to have limited access to basic necessities. That means 50 future leaders, 50 less cases of malaria, and 250 families who are eating well tonight because of you.

From Refugees to Sewing Trainers
Gee Sam and Korn Sant are from Kachin State and have been training in sewing over the past 4 months. They went from not knowing how to sew at all to making their own dresses and bags.
Partners provided the opportunity and funds for them to learn to sew and then equipped them with fabric, materials and sewing machines to take to Kachin State to begin a sewing project where they will train others from the IDP camps.
Gee Sam shares, “It has been very good for me to learn how to sew. I am very happy to go back and train people in the Kachin IDP Camp. Thank you, Partners, for this opportunity.”
This is how women thrive - and not merely survive - in less-than-ideal circumstances, and we are proud of them.

A Sustainable Future for Shan Schools.
One of our staff members has just returned from more than a month in Shan State to monitor and evaluate our Sustainable Schools program. The good news? 13 new community-owned projects (that have their profits fund education in their community) were initiated in 2018! That brings the current total to 78 communities now having greater capacity to keep their kids in school. We love seeing communities empowered to overcome the problems they face and we’re thankful you’re partnering with them to provide the seed capital that makes these sustainable projects a reality.
Tumblr media
Good Food for the Hungry
in late February, our team packed 1,000  boxes of food and distributed them to hungry families who are now not hungry at all. 5000 people ate who had no food the day before. Babies wore clean diapers for the first time in a while. Parents sipped tea while their kids sleep soundly because they knew there would be more where that came from.
Friends, every bit of this is good news. Every bit is Gospel work, love in action, wrongs being righted. Thank you for being with us and for sending us. We couldn’t do this without you; we couldn’t love and we couldn’t act if you didn’t love and act first.
