The reason I like the idea that Bruce was a teenage idle then personally experienced some aspect of poverty in his time abroad is because if I ever found out that some privileged rich white man spontaneously decided to go out into the streets and fight criminals hand to hand, I would personally tear his neck out with my teeth. Absolutely the fuck not. If he has no frame of reference for starvation, addiction, or homelessness, he has absolutely no right to enact his so-called justice.
That motherfucker better have fucking empathy in whole ass wheelbarrows OR ELSE.

Small Steps, Big Impact: Your Guide to Living Sustainably
Climate change can feel like an overwhelming issue, but the good news is, everyone can make a difference! Even small changes in our daily lives can significantly reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to a healthier planet. Here are some actionable tips to get you started on your sustainability journey:
At Home:
Power Down: Electronics continue to consume energy even on standby. Get in the habit of turning off lights, appliances, and electronics when not in use. Power strips with on/off switches make this even easier!
Embrace Energy Efficiency: Swap traditional incandescent bulbs for energy-efficient LEDs. Consider switching to energy-star rated appliances when yours reach the end of their lifespan.
Wash Smarter: Launder clothes with cold water whenever possible and air-dry them instead of using the dryer.
Thermostat Tweaks: Adjust your thermostat a few degrees in summer (up) and winter (down) to save energy on heating and cooling.
On the Go:
Think Green Transportation: Walk, bike, or use public transport for errands whenever possible. If you must drive, carpool or choose fuel-efficient vehicles.
Reduce, Reuse, Rethink: Carry reusable shopping bags and water bottles to avoid single-use plastics. When buying new items, prioritize quality over quantity and consider pre-owned options.
Mindful Consumption: Avoid impulse purchases and focus on buying items you truly need and will use for a long time.
Food Choices Matter:
Reduce Meat Consumption: Meat production has a significant environmental impact. Consider incorporating more plant-based meals into your diet.
Buy Local & Seasonal: Locally sourced produce reduces transportation emissions and often tastes better! Seasonal fruits and vegetables are fresher and more sustainable.
Plan Your Meals: Planning meals helps minimize food waste, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.
Be an Advocate:
Spread Awareness: Talk to friends and family about your sustainability efforts and encourage them to join You
Support Sustainable Businesses: Do your research and choose to support companies committed to sustainable practices.Stay Informed: Educate yourself about climate change and environmental issues.
Remember, every small step counts! By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can make a positive impact on the planet while inspiring others to do the same. Let's work together to build a more sustainable future for generations to come!

it’s kind of hard when you see posts or behaviours on here that’s like, your emotions are completely justified, and i’m not calling you irrational or crazy, but it is very clear you are in a space where being online or in these communities is causing you distress and harm you don’t know how to cope with. and continuing to post is causing harm.

Warning: This is going to ramble.
I absolutely love how much you can infer about a social order by the background “context” in its media. I’ve seen a lot of old “social guidance” and assorted industrial and sales training films in my time (thanks almost entirely to my 30+ year obsession with MST3K, I admit). At some point I started watching out for things that seemed unusual to me but which were presented as utterly unremarkable, but not such things that we are already accustomed to from the past like various prejudices and bigotries.
I’ve noticed an unmarried man in his 30′s or 40′s still living with his parents presented as nothing more than the setting for a sales manager to get advice from his retired sales manager father. I’ve noticed a grandfather, still living on the farm he’s handed over to his adult son, guiding the kids in “quality of life” activities there while their father and oldest brother are busy with the “sustainment” chores*. I’ve noticed very recent changes to the way families are expected to be structured in order to serve a capitalist social order.
I’ve mentioned it before, and I’m not likely to ever shut up about it, but the “nuclear family” is an absurd anomaly that was cultivated to increase sales of consumer goods. The fragmentation of the family into smaller entities was not the historical norm even in the places where it’s most widely endured today. Until less than a century ago multi-generational homes were typical, commonly consisting of the grandparent(s) and the family of one of their adult children. This customary arrangement arose from the agrarian origins of modern life. As I’ve mentioned before, the nuclear family was an unsustainable model before industrialization. (Personally, I think we’re seeing it proven unsustainable even now.)
In the post-WWII USA its promotion was, I believe, a campaign by capitalists to capture post-war “prosperity” by eliminating the sharing of many common household resources and coercing their purchase instead. When three generations lived under the same roof they only needed one set of household tools, for example. (I’ve also seen short films extolling the value of knowing how to do your own home and auto repairs, rather than paying someone else for them.)
A multi-generation home only needed one set of appliances, as well, and so on. Move the kids out into their own homes, though, and they’re going to buy their own tools, too. Co-housing, even with “found family,” means buying fewer durable consumer goods. The nuclear family model is meant to serve capital. (Sharing those things is still possible, obviously, but we humans seek convenience like we seek salt, fats, and sugars.)
The conditions that made this shattered form of family possible could almost certainly only have arisen in the wake of something as catastrophic as the Second World War. The post-war prosperity of a sufficient number of people in the USA to create those conditions was only the result of the USA having the only undamaged industrial capacity productive enough to sustain it. To put it plainly, when everyone else needed to rebuild their bombed out countries the USA were the only ones left who could sell them enough bricks.
As the rest of the world recovered from the war the advantage that the USA had enjoyed from their devastation steadily dwindled. The social conditioning, however, did not. Most of the USA’s populace was led to believe that economic policies were the primary driver of that advantage. Abandoning that comforting fantasy, which tells us that such “prosperity” can be turned on and off just by winning enough elections, is critical. Recognizing that it is only made possible by the immeasurable suffering of all forms of Earthling may be the only thing that will drive us to keep our habitat inhabitable.
TL;DR We need to share more, buy less, and foster the social arrangements that make those easier.
* While their dad and brother were tending the animals overwintering in the barn he took the kids out to their woodlot to cut a Christmas tree.

One of my least favorite things about the current state of the Internet is how ppl have become conditioned to the idea that entertainment should always be free and that it is somehow malicious and greedy for an independent creator to directly ask their audience to pay for a product that they work full time to create instead of relying on unpredictable and unstable income from a nebulous advertiser market that is actively dying

prioritizing profit?
people i interview for my research on corporate sustainability and sustainable finance often tell me that they have a legal obligation to maximize financial value for shareholders. they don't normally use this obligation to justify a company doing patently bad things like illegally dumping chemicals in a river or murdering resistant locals (they would argue that this actually diminishing shareholder value by undermining a company's reputation and creating more risks of bad press and regulatory penalties), but they do often use it as a way of justifying a lack of what they consider "philanthropic activities." it's the ideology of milton friedman -- who famously argued that "the social responsibility of business is to increase its profits" -- retooled for an era of greenwashing.
i've been thinking about this "legal obligation" a lot lately as elon musk guts twitter. where are the other shareholders whose financial interests he is "legally obligated" to protect? the only case i could find was the orlando pension fund suing to delay musk's twitter takeover on the grounds that he is an "interested shareholder," which is apparently quite a difficult case to win.
it'll be interesting to see what happens as people who have big stakes in twitter start to push back against musk's chaotic mismanagement of the company, but for now i'm squirreling this story away as an easy rebuttal to future informants who say they have a legal obligation to the shareholder.

when i was in a level psychology my teacher once asked my class how long we thought we had left before our species went extinct. most of us gave variations in the realm of thousands of years, but my friend said it would be within this century. when we asked her why she just said 'idk i just don't think we're going to last much longer' and we all laughed it off and said she was just being pessimistic. but now i see the way the world is absolutely refusing to respond to climate change the way it needs to and i think she was right.

The Crown Princess at WWF's autumn meeting
On Oct. 5, the Crown Princess attended the World Wildlife Fund's council meeting and autumn gathering at Erstaterrassen in Stockholm.
Tumblr media
WWF's board of trustees gathered at the meeting, and the theme for the day was Forward towards a sustainable business life! Secretary General Gustaf Lind also presented the awards: "Environmental Hero of the Year", "Marie-Claire Cronstedt's Prize", and "Panda Book of the Year".
Environmental Hero of the Year
Environmental Hero of the Year 2023 was awarded to the influencer Therése Lindgren.
The jury's motivation: "On her sustainability journey, Therése Lindgren has stopped at several stops in her life, from make-up and beauty to mental illness and animal protection - all the way to the final station with a sustainable lifestyle."
Comment from Saga: Therése is one of, if not the biggest, influencer in Sweden and it became national news when she changed her approach to collaborations and working with brands and companies. Basically, she now has a list of sustainability requirements and if the brand or company don't meet them, she won't work with them or promote them.
Marie-Claire Cronstedt's Prize
Researcher Elin Röös was awarded the Marie-Claire Cronstedt Prize.
The jury's motivation: "For her pioneering research and strong commitment to spreading knowledge about the environmental and climate impact of food, and for the sustainable use of animals and nature."
Panda Book of the Year
The Panda Book of the Year 2024 award was awarded to photographer Claes Grundsten for the book "Archipelago".
The jury's motivation: "Claes Grundsten allows us to get close to the wilderness of the archipelago, both emotionally and concretely, in a way that only exceptional artistic skill combined with great outdoor experience can achieve."
Tumblr media
On arrival, the Crown Princess was received by Annika Helker Lundström, chairman of WWF's board, Leif Johansson, vice-chairman of WWF's board and Gustav Lind, secretary general of WWF Sweden.
