To pick these I have to crouch down under the very thorny hardy lemon or bend over the tayberry-lined garden fence. Either way, it's a painful job. Didn't think it through when I planted them and it shows.

Okay so Trump has won now what?
I don't really know
But here is what I do know
The listeria outbreaks are from Trump deregulating food back in his first term
So I would recommend looking into a vegetarian diet or a local butcher, it will be pricier
You can also raise meat animals, lots of places will allow a small number of chickens and they get fed pretty much your compost and you can feed your eggs back to them (it's actually really good for them)
If it's an apartment look into quail
You can also do rabbits anywhere because they classify as pets but you wouldn't be keeping them as pets and I can tell from experience from when my parents attempted to keep rabbits, they are assholes and very hard to maintain
You can also hunt but you may need to take weeks off of work for it
Trump also wants to put a 25% tariff on anything from mexico
That is 90-99% of all your food depending on where you live. I am on the southern border so everything local except milk is from mexico
I recommend a garden and plan it out with your friends
You are not going to be able to replace everything especially not with the abundance needed
There may be things that you eat a lot of that even if your friends have it you should grow anyways
Most common is tomatoes. Especially if you have anything with ketchup and tomato sauce
A good plan is to evaluate what you eat, I mean break down everything into it's bare ingredients
That way you can get a good look at what you consume the most
Take one meal at a time so it's not overwhelming also consider what foods you are willing to sacrifice
This is a small start of what I can think of. These are things you want to start now so it's established by January
It might be good to join self sustainability groups like homesteaders or preppers but only if you can keep your mouth shut on anything political
And I mean like your tongue is under lock and key, if they ask because you are being quiet you just shrug and go "I don't really invest in politics"

If you became super rich and could design your own house, but could only add THREE unnecessary/random/expensive home additions (like how people will have bowling alleys, movie theatres, closets with museums of shoes, car display rooms, spa rooms, wine cellars, etc. in their mansions) - what three would you choose?
#I think I would have: an indoor pool (but like heavily customized with a faux weather system so I could get the feeling of swimming in#rain or fog or snow etc.). a very small arcade consisting only of skee-ball and DDR machines. and an old Library Room with authentic#historical furniture/interior design to store old books/tapestries/study room equipment/whatever other antiques I'd collect. It'd be#like some fully intricate movie set or something that would feel completely like stepping into another world/time.#Though I might would trade out the arcade for a roller skating rink.. i DO love skating....#And I wouldve put rock climbing gym because I love indoor rock climbing but.. as I understand it they have to change out the rock things#on the walls every once in a while so that you can have new routes and it doesnt get boring. and I'd rather have an activty room thats like#self sustaining and doesnt require me to hire some person to come switch things around once every month. Otherwise I would#totally do that instead.#I'm also personally not counting ''craft'' type stuff like having a pottery room kiln sort of thing because#that doesn't count as 'unnessecary' to me. since stuff like that would not at all be just a hobby I 'happen to#do sometimes for fun'#but would definitely be a career sort of thing. Like if I had the money for a fully stocked sculpture room and and a sewing room#with a good machine and etc. then I would literally be professionally selling pottery and designing clothing and etc.#so I wouldn't count it as 'just a random side room I dont need' etc.#The same way that if I played tennis professionally or as a very intense hobby that takes up most of my life/time#then I wouldn't count having a tennis court in your house to practice in as 'unncesscarry' etc.#wow that is the worst I have ever spelt that word ghbjh#Un Cess Carry#ALSO would obviously have an underground bunker of some sort with food and emergency supplies which also does not count as unnecessary to m#since it's literally like... survival.. And I thought most health organizations literally reccomend that even#the common person has a small 'go bag' prepared in their house. and like an evacuation plan in case of fire or other things#It WOULD be an unnecessary rich person thing to have a full on undergRound village or something stocked with 9000 guns and#whaetever. but I think just a basic emergency room with basic supplies could still be counted under the 'not unnecessary' requirement.#Like I would say that a sprawling courtyard of flower gardens and fountains and hedge mazes that takes up like a hundred thousand#dollars a year in maintenance would count as one of the three 'unnecessary and expensive' things. But having a small garden in the#back yard with a few planters in a little greenhouse or whatever would not. The 'excessiveness' of the thing matters lol#ANYWAY!!!#Just curious what other peoples Three Main things would be... hrrmm

Garden update today :)
We had some more gloomy wet weather so unfortunatly some chores and errands fell through and I'm a little behind on some maintenance as well as seed uppotting
Sadly I don't think any of my peppers are going to grow. A few of the tomatoes have sprouted so there is at least that. Unfortunatly i dont think they will be ready for transplanting by valentines day. They'll be a little behind anyways.
Here's the cabbages now~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm very excited to see these growing so well this season :D they are transplanted and these 4 are the survivers so far.
Tumblr media
The carrots (don't mind the weeds, I'll be yanking them as soon as I catch up, as long as I get them before seed they make excellent salads for the chickens)
Tumblr media
The nasturtium, there's some flowers tucked up inside them, a few yellows this season, not to many red or orange so far.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The broccoli and a close up of one that seems to be growing multiple little florets now :D
Tumblr media
The lentils I put in the L bed are starting to sprout now too :) I think this upcoming season I may plant cucumbers or melons of some sort.
Tumblr media
And a bit excited, a lil garlic peice is starting to peek through!!
Oh! I also saw 2 of the wild love parrots this morning in one of the neighbors' trees!!! I have no choice but to always have sunflowers growing and will need to accommodate some grow space for them now 😂 their pretty rarely sighted in the area im at so I am super stoked to see them.
hopefully, they are able to find enough food to hang out for more than flying through, and that people get to see why having green spaces in cities is important to more than just human benefit.
That's it for now :)
🌱🌻Happy homesteading and gardening 🌻🌱

On garden and winter food
I've decided to go and take inventory of all of my canned good, to figure out what kind of stash do I have for this winter, and to know how quickly am I allowed to go thru it. Half an hour of counting and sorting in my basement informed me I had 37 jars of salty-sour types of preserves, and 32 jars of sweet preserves. This is more sweet stuff than I've had in the past, but not nearly enough of salty-sour. 'What was I thinking?' I said to myself, and then I remembered, no, it's not for a lack of planning, I was sick the whole summer, I've done all canning I possibly could. The lesson was just not to get covid in the summer.
Still, I was worried it wouldn't be enough to get me thru the winter, and, since I've been so sick and neglecting my garden, it wasn't going to start producing a lot of new food anytime soon. Not going to the garden for so long really affected its production.
I later remembered, that I forgot to count all of the non-canned stash. I've put extra effort in dried food this year, I have over 10 jars of dried goods (tomatoes, zuchinni, mushrooms, roots, fruit), and there are many meals that can be made out of that. I also have plenty of potatoes, my two big bags of walnuts, many squashes, lots of garlic, and, the ability to still forage for apples and wild edibles.
Usually at this time I would be getting lots of carrots and broccoli from the garden, and some kale, but since it wasn't all planted in time, I have none of that. What I do have is black radish (or turnip, I'm not sure if it's black radish or black turnip. It's white on the inside, and big), celery, parsley, chives, cabbage savoy (not very big), swiss chard, green onions. Which is not a whole lot, but it's a valuable source of fresh produce. I also could possibly locate the jerusalem artichoke planted somewhere in the field, I love eating them during the winter.
I've had to face my own food issues, and that is that I'm incredibly stubborn not to buy anything that I can make myself, and also lazy to make it myself after I don't buy it. For instance, I could make a meal from pasta and a sauce made with sun-dried tomatoes, but I refuse to buy pasta, and I'm never starting the food making process until I'm hungry. So I end up never making it. The entire ordeal can be avoided if I reserved one day, to make a big batch of homemade pasta, have it dry, and then I could make tons of meals from dried good and pasta! Like pasta with mushroom sauce, pasta with zuchinni sauce, cabbage and pasta, pasta salad, those are things I would definitely eat!
In this spirit, I did gather my enegry and made a big thing of pasta, occupying the entire kitchen while it was drying for the whole day. Then I stuffed it all into a large jar, and now I have a big decorative jar with pasta sticking out, and it looks so pretty, now I just never want to eat it. Nobody has yet figured out that it's pasta in the jar, everyone thinks it's some decorative plants in there. It's understandable, since I'm known to put plants in jars for decoration.
I also have some new exciting preserves that I made for the first time this year! My first innovation was related to the pears; we have a pear tree close to the building, but it produces extremely tough and difficult to eat types of pears, everyone just ignores it. Except me, I scurry around it and scramble to collect all of the pears and then I cook them into a compot, feeling like an evil mastermind for figuring out how to eat them. Eventually, I got tired of the compot, and then I figured I could try making a pear-sauce, like an applesauce, but with pears. I wasn't sure if it was gonna go well, because they were so tough and not very sweet, but the result was absolutely fantastic; it's smooth and delicious and sweet. I love this more than I love applesauce. Pleased with my pear-related success.
I also made a spicy jam, made out of blackberries, grapes and plums, and then I added a few hot peppers in. I did this because every single winter I am longing for sweet-spicy mix, and I felt that I would want to eat it. And I was right, when my sinuses started to act up, I was grateful to have a spicy preserve that could make them clear up. I actually think it could be spicier next year.
I'll find out this winter, if I prefer eating the preserves or using the dry goods for recipes, drying is definitely easier and takes less effort, but it should be eaten before February, when the bugs eggs will start to activate inside, making it way less appealing. So that's where the canned goods come into play, they are completely protected from being eaten or spoiled. Hopefully next summer, I'll be healthy and better at getting more canning done.

The Basil is dead :(
The wandflower is likely dead too :(
Killed by the heatwave combined with me forgetting to water for 4 days due to a combination of health issues and emotional breakdown.
I was mentally prepared for the Basil but the wandflower is a huge loss, that baby is a perennial and i love(d) her.

So if you know me in rl or we have been mutuals for a year plus
Then you know I actually lean hard into traditional skills and will randomly hyper fixate and want to just disappear into the woods on a backpacking trip and just make a whole homestead
Well I just got some massive validation and go ahead to actually make plans to do it
So just a heads up you may get rants on sustainability and green houses and why we need basic survival skills instead of relying so much of electronics and internet (in a non ableist way)

It's been a month since this peacock appeared in the garden behind our university. I don't know where he came from, and I surmised he must have escaped from some house with a courtyard in the vicinity. This garden is also connected to a wood north of the city, but nobody ever heard about wild peacocks in this area. So, me and my colleagues started leaving seeds on a plate and a cup of water outside. The peacock stayed, and my friend gave him the name "Vinicio". Now it's been a month, it has snowed a couple of times, and temperatures are dropping during the night, but Vinicio seems to be doing fine.

As soon as he spots us, he usually starts turning away, but the other day he finally approached us and looked at us with his dinosaur eyes.
