Two Exciting Additions To The Line-Up For Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas

The first name that I can announce today is Michael C. Duguay. Michael explained his history to Canadian Beats magazine in 2020: ‘I’m an artist, writer, and performer currently based in East-Central Ontario. In the mid to late ’00s, I worked as an accompanist and contributing member in a number of my friend’s great projects – The Burning Hell, Evening Hymns, Weird Lines – and released a few EPs and records of my own. My writing is personal and confessional; I have a difficult time writing about things that I myself have not experienced, about places I haven’t been, or people I haven’t met. I’d sooner write songs about Oshawa than Memphis. Writing has served as a genuinely cathartic process for me recently – I experienced some pretty challenging adversity in my twenties, and writing has allowed me to make sense of it; like a sort of narrative therapy- and I think that shows in the work.

“Yankee Swap”, the song Michael has kindly “donated” to Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas, is described by the indispensable Christmas Underground blog as having ‘a big, beautiful chorus, with a bass saxophone that vibrates everything inside of you’. A glorious song, all the more so given that it marks the Canadian’s return to songwriting following a number of years spent dealing with some very serious personal issues. Michael released his first album in nearly a decade, The Winter of our Discotheque, in 2020.

The mission statement of the Snowflake Singles Club, formed in 2013, declares that the labels intention is to celebrate the Christmas 7” single by ‘documenting Christmas singles from the past that we think deserve to be heard’. The Dutch label releases four singles every year and proved a treasure trove of sensational material for someone just starting out on researching Christmas songs. Unsurprisingly, then, OH! GUNQUIT’S piledriver from 2018 will not be the only contribution Snowflake makes to Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas.

OH! Gunquit, described as a cross between The Cramp’s and the B-52’S, deliver a high-octane Xmas song that will blow away any lingering Christmas cobwebs as you glumly take down the holiday decorations. Led by Tina Swaysey (vocals & trumpet) and Simon Wild (guitars & vocals), the London-based combo, featuring musicians from Italy, Spain and Colombia, describe themselves as purveyors of twisted surfpunk. Their latest album, Why Haven’t You Watered the Plants, was released through Decapitator in 2020.
