In Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (shown here in the Super Mario All-Stars version), it is possible for Mario to die after touching the flagpole through a combination of glitches in World 9-3, which will make the completion of the level not count.

Top: Near the end of the level, Mario can clip inside the ceiling in the manner depicted. This will not only allow him to stand on the roof of the level, but also move him all the way to the right edge of the screen.

Bottom: if Mario grabs the flagpole when he is touching the right edge of the screen, he will teleport to the left edge. However, in this level, the left edge of this screen is above lava. As such, directly after completing the level, Mario teleports above the lava and dies while the congratulatory music plays. The completion does not count and after losing a life, Mario respawns at the beginning of 9-3.

Some know him as Blue Bowser, others know him as Bowser's Brother, but all you'll know is pain if you step in the ring with this guy! Bulrog may look a lot like Bowser, but he's got a degree of swagger his tyrant brother just can't match - just look at that combover!

fun fact: Bulrog's name comes from two sources!

first, the Korean food dish "bulgogi", which Miyamoto thought "Koopa" was actually named after

second, this bizarre mistranslation of Bowser's name from one of those how to draw books

combining "bulgogi" and "Kerog" gets "Bulrog"!

Fake Bowsers

So something people will forget about at times is the fact in several games the Bowsers you fight aren't the real bowser.

In Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels many of the Bowser's you fight are minions transformed into Fake Bowsers by magic. We see this done again in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario 3D Land, and Super Mario Run as well.

Small comic illustrating a glitch in the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, known internationally as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, from the Japanese Family Computer Magazine. If Mario follows Bullet Bills without letting them leave the screen, the console will not have enough space in memory to spawn the enemies that would otherwise appear.

In the upper panel, Mario is following two Bullet Bills and notices that the Hammer Bro that would otherwise be in this spot is missing. In the lower panel, the same happens with a Piranha Plant when Mario is following three Bullet Bills at once.

There's been a breach! In trying to build a stadium in the Minus World, it seems that other worlds have are starting to cross over! This Mario brother lookalike randomly showed up one day - he may look odd, but Mario and friends decided he was cool and can stay. We call him Oyoop.
