Adorable 1843 Victorian artist's cottage in Cambridge, NY already has a pending sale. 3bds, 2ba, 2,467 sq ft, $378k. It's the perfect artist's retreat.
It's neatly restored, nothing fancy.
The new owners, especially if they're artists, have a clean slate. Look at the original corner cabinet.
Off the dining room there's the main floor bath and it also opens to the main floor bedroom.
Beautiful cabinetry.
Family room/kitchen combo.
Cute small kitchen.
Back here, there's a closet area with the original closets.
In the back of the house there's a beautiful sunporch with a patio.
The other bedrooms and bath are on the 2nd level. This is a nice, large sunny room.
And, this one can be an upstairs primary. Such a cheerful home.
The upstairs bath is a standard 3pc.
And, finally, there's a nice finished attic.
And, here's the artist's studio. Isn't this pretty?
There's even a wood shop beside several art rooms.
The gardens are gorgeous. .39 acre lot.

this is quite self indulgent (you have no obligation to respond if this is not something you are down to write, i totally get it lol), but as someone with ptsd, i get nightmares more nights than i don’t. this kinda made me realize- how would keeper! simon react if he can hear feral having a nightmare in her room, especially with his rule of letting their space be theirs and theirs alone? how do you think the other would react to one if they were watching her?
(also, can i be ☘️ anon?? this and the scientist au live in my head rent free and i have so may ideas lol)
Hi!! You can absolutely be ☘️! Welcome aboard!!
And oooh yeah, nightmares I can def do.
The first time it happens is early on in your time with him. No surprise, your life has been turned upside down and you’re still very frightened of him! It’s entirely understandable. He also knows that going in to wake you up probably won’t help.
So he turns your light on so that when you wake up, it won’t be dark. He leaves a glass of water at the door, and a heating pack in case you need it.
The next morning, he’s extra slow and careful with you. You’re so tired you barely even notice.
Later on, he starts gently waking you. He doesn’t mind that you react violently, just makes sure you don’t fall out of your tall bed. He offers you things - water, snacks, a trip outside for fresh air, a cuddle? The first time you ask him to just… stay, don’t speak don’t touch, just be in the room, his heart melts. He stays until you fall asleep.
He gets you a pretty fake moon that he hangs from the ceiling. It casts a pretty soft glow that’s much easier to wake up to after nightmares. You bump your forehead against his arm in thanks for that.
When you two actually have a bond, though, you’re running into his room if he’s not already in yours. The “your bed is untouchable” rule no longer applies if you’re screaming and sobbing and hyperventilating in your sleep. And that’s by your own permission! You told him that!
You can’t handle being held after a nightmare, don’t like feeling trapped or pinned. So he just stays where you can see him, hands to himself and you decide the level of contact. Sometimes you yank him down to play with his hair to soothe yourself. Sometimes you lean into his side for something sturdy and warm. On really bad nights, the two of you go back to his room. He lies on his side facing away and you press against his back, palm flat to make your breaths match his. He stays awake all night those times, just to make sure you sleep alright.
When he’s away, you’re much more likely to have nightmares. Unfortunately, the care guides are not very helpful. You won’t let anyone do what he does for you, and you react to them all differently.
Price takes a similar approach to Simon in the beginning. Leaves things for you to comfort yourself with and stays available if you need to be with someone. Later on, after you’ve gotten more used to him, sometimes you creep out of your room and sit in the couch with him. It works for you, even if you’re very tired and grumpy the next day.
Johnny will only enter your room if it’s really bad to wake you up. Those are the few times you’ve apologized for biting or scratching him. He brings you hot chocolate and holds your hand a respectful distance away, sometimes on the couch, sometimes on the floor of your room. He asks what you’ve dreamed of, but you never tell him.
Gaz is allowed in your room always to wake you up. You feel so bad if he doesn’t dodge fast enough and gets hit or bit. He just shakes it off a little smile and squeezes your hand. He takes you out to the sunporch to look at the stars under blankets usually. Or cuddles up on the couch with you to watch cartoons or comedies or tiktoks. Sometimes if he asks, you do tell him. But you feel bad for doing that whenever you do.

The bad news is, we don't get any free honey.
The good news is, the bees get it all and now they won't be back.
The bee guy took down the entire ceiling in the powder room and a good chunk of the ceiling in the sunroom and discovered that we used to have bees; but at some point both hives worth were abandoned, leaving honey behind. The 100K or so bees raising the temperature and freaking out over the electrical work had let themselves in to carry off the honey, and they'd already gotten most of it! All the bee guy had to do was carry off all the remaining combs - to expose in his backyard so his own hives can scour the remaining honey out of them - and the bees lost their reason to hang out here.
They'll keep coming back to check for awhile, but he covered up the main entrance with a barrier dosed with something that repels bees, in order to discourage them, and by the time the electricians come back on Wednesday word should have spread that the horde has been looted and there's no reason to return.
Also, the plumbers wrapped up their job today and starting tomorrow (after the adhesive has had time to fully dry and I've given it the cleaning of its life) I'll be able to have my first bath in years. The water pressure in the shower tub was never great, and for a long time I had to remove the showerhead periodically, clean grit out of it, and sometimes replace the gasket or the showerhead itself. The bathtub took about seventy years to fill and we gave up on it entirely 20 years or so ago. Sometime after we redid the second bath on the sunporch we stopped using it entirely, and when the pipes froze and burst during Snowmageddon we just had them capped off. The problem was the 100-year old iron pipes with 100 years of rust, calcification, and whatever had clogged irreparably. But now we have new pipes and water pressure!
At last we're catching a break and this project I've only been planning since we bought the place will be finished, possibly before the end of the month!

I was just sitting on the sunporch thinking about how tired and achy I am when I noticed a new vine growing across one of the windows. And I started cackling because it is absolutely poison ivy.

Two Cats
By Katha Pollitt
It's better to be a cat than to be a human.
Not because of their much-noted grace and beauty—
their beauty wins them no added pleasure, grace is
only a cat's way
of getting without fuss from one place to another—
but because they see things as they are. Cats never mistake a
saucer of milk for a declaration of passion
or the crook of your knees for
a permanent address. Observing two cats on a sunporch,
you might think of them as a pair of Florentine bravoes
awaiting through slitted eyes the least lapse of attention—
then slash! the stiletto
or alternately as a long-married couple, who hardly
notice each other but find it somehow a comfort
sharing the couch, the evening news, the cocoa.
Both these ideas
are wrong. Two cats together are like two strangers
cast up by different storms on the same desert island
who manage to guard, despite the utter absence
of privacy, chocolate,
useful domestic articles, reading material,
their separate solitudes. They would not dream of
telling each other their dreams, or the plots of old movies,
or inventing a bookful
of coconut recipes. Where we would long ago have
frantically shredded our underwear into signal
flags and be dancing obscenely about on the shore in
a desperate frenzy,
they merely shift on their haunches, calm as two stoics
weighing the probable odds of the soul's immortality,
as if to say, if a ship should happen along we'll
be rescued. If not, not.

For the Weirder ask game:
14, 22, 34? :3
14. Do you love the smell of earth after it rains?
I do! I’ve lived in the countryside my whole life and there’s little I like more than leaving my sunporch doors cracked during a summer storm so I can hear and smell all the rain dripping off the pecan trees. Everything is so fresh after the rain - especially right now, when all that petrichor is mixed with honeysuckle blooming on the vine, heavy and earthy and sweet.
22. What kind of person are you?
A flawed one. A particular one. Hopefully a good one, though all I can really do is try. Who knows, maybe someday I’ll be one who actually likes myself - stranger things have happened.
34. Is there a song you know every word to by heart?
MANY. I’ve been a performing singer since I was three years old and I started doing theatre in 2015. At this point, my brain is a collection of half-remembered quotes and song lyrics: I just don’t always find the ones I want right away because the librarian in here sucks. 😂 But if you want the most recent one I was singing on the way home, definitely “End of an Era” by Marianas Trench.
