! matt sturniolo !
~ matt is the listener to your yapper. he is always attentively listening to whatever you have to say, whatever tangents and side stories you go down, and when you're tired of speaking, he holds you while he talks
~ when you lose track of time, he is always the one patiently reminding you that it's time to get ready
~ along the same route, he is always making sure that you're not forgetting to eat, drink, and use the bathroom, when you get caught up in hyperfixations
~ he's always more than happy to get fidgets with you, and he often uses them himself when he's anxious
~ when you get overwhelmed, he is always a comforting presence for you
! chris sturniolo !
~ you and chris go back and forth for ages and ages when you're talking to each other
~ it's often that you'll find yourself stimming together, and it's always a load of laughter echoing in the room wherever you two are
~ sometimes you two overwhelm each other, but you are always so in tune with each other's emotions that it always works out
~ you two do love to simply sit in silence sometimes, body doubling to get important things done together
~ if you have a sunflower lanyard, chris adores decorating it with pins

A list of dumb things I’m anxious about when the Ghost Concert happens:
(I’m a really anxious person and overthink a lot)
• What time do I get to the venue? I live four hours away
• What if I’m late?
• What if I have an asthma attack from the smoke machines cause I’m sat next to the stage
• I bought a seated ticket but am I allowed to stand
• What if no one else stands
• What if someone is in my seat and tries to pick a fight (happened before at my first ever concert)
• What if someone else has a medical emergency
• What if I throw up from being so anxious
• What if someone has a secret camera and gets caught
• What if Mountain isn’t there
• What if I can’t get any mummy dust or confetti
• What if someone causes a fight near me
• What if I have a medical emergency and cant get access to my phone
• What if my mum gets injured
• What if I have a panic attack
• What if I get separated from my mum
• Do I wear my sunflower lanyard?
• Am I allowed to wear my ear defenders (I know I am, I’m just panicking)
• What if I need a drink for my medication?
• What if I cry? (Stupid brain says crying = weakness)
• What if someone tries to talk to me and I panic and can’t talk
• What if someone makes fun of my hand stims

autistic May headcanons:
they stim by twirling, playing with hair (normally their own, Juliet's or Frankie's but Romeo has let them play with his a few times), tapping their fingers, clicking their tongue and playing with magnetic rings
they love bright lights and things for visual stims but sometimes they get too overwhelming and they hate them
they used to have panic attacks very frequently but after moving to paris theyre doing a lot better and now it doesn't happen much, but still sometimes (along with meltdowns)
one of their special interests is flowers and they have a lot of books on flowers and Frankie likes to buy flowers for them and listen to them talk, also going to public gardens and forests. and they grew their own garden (Frankie likes to watch them while they plant things)
they also have another special interest in horror games which was really surprising to Frankie, Juliet had known them her whole life so she wasnt but for Frankie (and even Romeo) it was very surprising and unexpected. they also got Juliet into horror and Romeo was already a horror fan (shared special interest), Frankie not as much but he played some games with the gang and now he likes them too even if he gets scared
they claim to love parties and then constantly have to step outside or hide in the bathroom at parties, they do have a lot of fun provided they have noise cancelling headphones and can leave whenever they want but still they need a lot downtime before and after
cherries are one of their main safe foods and thats why they wear cherry chapstick, they have other flavours too but it's a safe and comfortable option
they hate tomatoes. so much. the texture is terrible and the flavour is barely better
theyre normally very honest, but learned how to hide the truth because they had to
they kmow certain cues but specifically ones of the people they love, theyre good at learning person-specific cues but struggle with other ones. they are trying their best though
LOVES the sunflower lanyard thing because like. flowers. special interest. theyre disabled. it's perfect
thats all off the top of my head!

Sunflower Lanyards
Chances are you've seen people wearing them, but what do you know about them? what do they mean?
A Sunflower Lanyard is a tool that people with hidden disabilities can use to raise awareness and let people know that they have a disability, this lanyard is a sign that the wearer might need some extra support. I wear mine whenever I go out, for me it gives me a sense of security and comfort. It makes me feel like I don't have to mask when I'm around people because I don't feel like I'm expected to "be normal" because well, they've read the lanyard they know I have a disability so I don't have to hide, the lanyard has talked for me. It is especially helpful when i meet new teachers, friends, employers, bosses, etc, because sometimes it gets kind of exhausting telling people your autistic/have a disability
How do you support someone with a Sunflower lanyard
If you see someone wearing a Sunflower Lanyard what do you do? How can you help?
Here's what you can do:
. Don't touch us and if you need to please ask before you do so
. Talk calmly
. Ask us what supports need to be put in place so that we are able to get through the day easier
.if the wearer is in distress please again don't touch us (unless wearer says differently), find a quite space and if we stim don't stop unless it's harmful and if it is, give us a fidget toy or stuffed animals. Don't yell or tell us to stop. This is NOT a temper tantrum. It is involuntary. It is scary. It's not going to help. If possible it would be helpful to dim the lights. In a meltdown everything is too loud, too bright, too much. Taking away or easing those stimuli can help loads.
.if they need to get out of that room, let them get out of that room. They need to remove themselves from that situation because it's distressing them.
If you have someone wearing a Sunflower Lanyard in a work space please support them as much as you possibly can, and arrange a sensory room for them to go to when when everything to overwhelming and too much.
Different, not less

Nobody asked but here's a list of stuff that I bring with me when I go out. All stuff that helps me cope and feel more secure and confident when out and about.
My phone. Has an AAC app on it just in case, haven't used yet due to anxiety and complex feelings about it
My school jacket which is a comfort item that also happens to have 4 pockets which I use completely (I've got stuff like small stim toys, my wallet, pads, etc., in them)
My sunflower lanyard
My communication cards which are attached to my lanyard
My noise-cancelling headphones
My prescription sunglasses and the cool tinted add-on lenses that connect to the main frame with magnets
My crossbody bag that I call my "accessibility bag" because I can. Specifically a crossbody bag for easy access to what I bring
What I have in my bag
Bottle of water
Snacks
My glasses case
Mini bag full of stim toys (tangles, pop-its that can turn into bracelets, a chewy, rubber bands, monkey noodles, bubbler pen)
A notebook and small pencilcase
A cheap LCD tablet
An umbrella
Chewing gum
Painkillers and anti-inflammatories
An eye mask
A mask
A wire for my headphones (connects them to my phone like wired headphones) incase they die
Some bracelets that I made, plus other jewellery like rings because sometimes I spontaneously want to wear them
My small orca plushie named Bóinn that is literally my daughter and nobody can tell me otherwise. She's my little portable emotional support animal :]

I just got my sunflower lanyard!🌻
For those who don't know:
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a simple tool for you to voluntarily share that you have a disability or condition that may not be immediately apparent – and that you may need a helping hand, understanding, or more time in shops, at work, on transport, or in public spaces. (text taken from their official website)
Sadly, the organisation isn't being represented in my country yet (except for some airports). I decided to get one to "ease my shopping experience". I'm easily overwhelmed by external sensory stimuli and tend to stim and tic during these experiences as well as it might influence my ability to talk.

Autistic April Day 29: Accessibility
I think it's very important to make as many venues as accessible to disabled people as possible because it isn't fun missing out on things because they arn't accessible.
I miss being able to do things that I used to be able to do but can no longer do because my Agoraphobia has gotten bad. However if some places became more accessible to me I would be able to do those things again.
One thing I miss is being able to travel but unfortunately airports arnt accessible to me so I can't fly even though I am fine on planes.
I believe the sunflower lanyard is great when helping people with airports and I think that all staff at every airport in the world should learn about what the sunflower lanyard means and how to help disabled passengers. I have also seen pictures of quiet areas set up in different airports which is fantastic. I think these should be in every airport.
I also think there should be an alternative way of going through Airport security for some passengers because airport security is what myself and many other people struggle with. I would prefer to take the option if I could get strip searched by a female guard in a private room instead of having a panic attack and breaching airport security again. I understand that we have to keep our airports and planes safe and that option should be available.
I think with accessibility more disabled people would be able to travel and have fun.
Image Descriptions:
1: This is a photo of me after I had a panic attack and breeched airport security. I am a white woman who has my long dark brown hair tied up into a pony tail. I am wearing an olive green dress and a navy blue covid mask. I am going down an esculater. There are two people near me but only their shoulders are visible in the photo. One person is wearing a dark blue police uniform and the other person is wearing a white shirt.
2: There are a list of prompts for each day of the month for Autistic April. The top and bottom of the image is light purple and the middle part of the image is white with black text on it. The black text says "Autistic April 2024 Prompts: 1: Special interests 2: How you found out you were Autistic 3: your favourite stim 4: alternative forms of communication 5: your favourite fidget toys 6: textures you hate 7: safe foods 8: other disabilities you have 9: LBGTQI+ 10: childhood special interests11: comfort items 12: your favourite Autistic celebrities or characters13: unmasking 14: sensory aids 15: misdiagnosis 16: Autism friendly places 17: Disability support you have received 18: animals 19: favourite thing about being Autistic 20: echolalia 21: idenity first or Person first language 22: the spoon theory
23: colours that represent Autism (not blue) 24: Autistic owned small businesses 25: meltdowns and/or shutdowns 26: Your clothing prefences 27: Self care 28: Relatable Autism memes 29: Accessibility 30: routines" There is an infinity symbol that is half red and half gold on the top right corner of the white section. End Description.

Nearly had a meltdown earlier in the pharmacy, and it was a pharmacy with a poster up for the sunflower lanyards
I briefly considered getting one in case this happens again (it will) but my attempts to self-regulate (weird hand stims and talking to myself) look like I'm trying to curse everyone- I'd honestly prefer people to think that than for them to speak to me like I'm five, and the latter is always a risk if you give randos any sign that the weird shit you're doing is The Autism™️
#autism stuff#i am fine btw i had a sausage roll and cried all my mascara off and that helped#the only time i've freaked out in public and actually explained anything so far was at a craft expo lmao#a nice butch lady asked if i was okay and i said#'yeah i'm just too autistic for all the noise'#you know. like an absolutely normal human person.#she asked if i had headphones (i did) and told me where i could hide 😅

I wanna walk around in a sunflower lanyard and stim and not speak and unapologetically live my best life with stim toys and accommodation but alas, masking, anxiety and the desperate need to be liked and fit in eats away at me.
