genuinely Mariner and Boimler BOTH ending up as the (provisional) first officers of the Cerritos was the least expected ending but also the only one that could make sense and feel satisfying
#lower decks spoilers#star trek lower decks#lower decks#either one of them being shown as captain and the other as XO doesn't work because they're a bonded pair and need to do everything together#anyway I had to type this through tears#tawny newsome im begging u to put the cerritos in your funny little risa sitcom plsplspls#I'm NOT ready to let these blorbos go why did they have to cancel this show in the midst of the hyperfixation#putting this in the bottom of the tags but confession: I applied to titmouse's internship program AND paramount's internships last summer#because I wanted to work on lower decks SO BAD (<- did not get in. also the last season was probably in production by that point)

my former friend who has been ghosting me for 2 months decided to not be friends with me when i told her it wasn't my job to check up on her, especially if she wasn't communicating with me at all after she told me that it was my fault we weren't talking. over a year of friendship down the drain. so happy for her and her ugly boyfriend though. seriously.
#basically i was honest (not mean) with her and she wanted me to change behaviors of mine because in her mind i am not catering to her#and i guess therefore that makes me a bad friend? these standards will never be applied to her#happy news! i applied to all my master's programs. pls let me in!#i also got an internship for the summer which is so exciting :))#txt

#SORRY im mad about my stupid college again#WHY do they require so many internhip hours??????#no wait i KNOW why. bc the chef who runs the program is EVIL AND STUPID#he literally thinks he as a chef is gods gift to this earth. he thinks CHEFS are gods gift to this earth but only if they agree with him.#however. gods gift to this earth do NOT deserve breaks. ('chefs dont get breaks' is a direct quote)#he thinks all chefs should work like dogs and SUFFER. and the industry should never change#and he loves the power of being the program head. (and most students' advisor)#and he can say im preparing you to be the best!!!!! and get away with it#and he doesnt respect pastry chefs. and guess what i am hahahah#like i know the culinary industry is toxic and most chefs are jerks. but bakeries are very different from restaurants#so i thought i could handle some jerky chefs during school and get my degree and go work in a bakery#(i can handle some jerky chefs)#the problem was that a jerky chef ran the program as if you were already working in the worst restaurant environment imaginable#and he only taught like everyone wanted to be world renown chefs of 5 star parisian restaurants that take 4 years to get a reservation#(which is crazy that he thinks hes qualified to get other people to that level but ok.)#and thats great for people who want that! but some people (me) just want a cute little bakery!#also ! its advertised as a 2 year associates program#which. is true that you'll only get an associates degree out of it#but 2 years is including summer semesters. sorry i don't think thats how that works. i think thats 3 years#2 years for people who decide to do extra and take summer semesters.#and i think the only realistic way to complete the internship hours is to take an off semester and only do the internship#so you're not doing it at the same time as classes#but that adds a minimum of 1 semester and maximum 2#or if you cram the spring and fall semesters to have summer off and do the internship during summer#summer semesters are shorter. so youd have less weeks to complete the same amount of hours#it is simply not a 2 year program for the average person!!!!!!#i was IN COLLEGE FOR 2 YEARS!!!!!! AND I ONLY TOOK 1 (ONE) PASTRY CLASS!!!!!! I SHOULD'VE BEEN ABLE TO GRADUATE!!!!!!!!!!!#and what do you MEAN you expect me to be in college for 3 years and only get an associates degree out of it. no thank you#its almost like...... an associates degree requires 2 years of schooling........ and theres too much happening in this program.......#bc the man in charge of it is power hungry and wants to control people and thinks chefs need to be beat into shape.......

another 30% bc he insists that we focus hard on content that doesn’t appear at all and only gives three fucking problems that instead cover completely unrelated topics and doesn’t bother with partial credit and when you go to him for help outside of exams he tells you you just need to read the book properly 😍 i love it here SO much
#it’s like a game to him i don’t!! get it. what are you getting out of this#unless i somehow blow the final out of the fucking water im retaking it#it’s too cold to have a breakdown by the river now so i have lowered myself to the public restrooms <3 mwah#i don’t know if im even allowed to take this summer class or if i’ll be forced to push back my internship and add on another#semester -> which actually means adding on a fucking year bc we’re only allowed to graduate in the summer i fucking. cannot do this#anymore lmao#i hate this program it is so unbelievably restrictive for no reason. besides practically robbing you of your time and money i guess#personal#the physics chronicles#the engineering chronicles#can’t even ask the advisors abt figuring out an alternate path bc they’re literally?? prohibited from advising you on tracks besides the#program plans?? what are you even here for then i Have the program plans i can look at them myself. hell world

There’s this program I could take that would let me do the last of high school at a college and part of the program is a paid internship and alongside the normal classes are college credit classes but it means I’d have to transfer schools…..
#turtledove yells into the abyss#IM FR STRUGGLING HERE.#BC LIKE I ADORED MY SUMMER ART PROGRAM AND THE PEOPLE THERE#AND IF I DO THIS IM SO SO LIKELY TO MEET MORE PPL LIKE THOSE AT MY WRITING PROGRAM#AND THE CLASS SIZES ARE AMALLER AND WED WORK WITH PROFESSORS AND AND!!!#COLLEGE CREDITS!!!! INTERNSHIP!!!! IT WOULD GIVE ME SO MUCH AND EASE SO MUCH OF MY STRESS!!!!!!!#But like . I don’t know what I’d do w/o my friends there with me :(#It’s one thing to be gone for a month in the summer but it’s a whole other to switch schools…..

i mentioned to my roommate that i was applying to work at a nearby tea shop among other places and she was like "are you sure you'll be able to deal with that?" which like. she meant like sensory wise (she said specifically cause in the past i'd mentioned being possibly/probably autistic and the location will likely be loud and crowded for long periods of time, two things i don't handle super well generally) and i do appreciate the concern but also like. for one thing it's about as decent a job as i have even a chance of getting (walking distance, wage isn't the best but with tips it's pretty decent, you get free tea during your shift) and for another thing i think literally all of my options at this point are going to be in the same situation so it's not like i can afford to be super picky here
#i wanna talk about me#like idk i know she was just trying to be nice but it did feel slightly patronizing#like i'm very happy for you getting a great job in your chosen field immediately out of college. i am!#but i got rejected three times from my dream internship program and have zero other offers ahead of me#so i have to find some way of making a little cash over the summer#and with my pitiful no employment experience ass the only thing i can really hope for right now is retail/grocery or food service#which. well. all of those things share the same potential sensory problems for me. And I Can't Exactly Avoid That#so. idk. i'll try to wear a comfy mask and bring along earbuds. maybe get some inserts for my shoes to pad my feet some more.#but it's not like i have a plethora of options here to choose from.

My sister works in non-profit fundraising, and her biggest complaint is that donors (admittedly, mostly big donors that like strings attached and their name or company promoted) want their money to make a "direct" impact. Which sounds good, but they don't think about the operating costs it takes to distribute that impact.
It takes more than just food to run a food bank. It takes space. It takes people working full-time jobs that need to make a living wage so they can distribute the food, reach out to donors, run the finances, manage volunteers, make the food accessible to the people who need it. It takes people doing publicity and keeping websites running, and other things that I can't think of immediately but are still vital to the mission.
There are charities that are sketchy out there and you should do a little vetting before donating, but all charities have operating costs that are not optional. And almost no one working at a nonprofit does it for the money, since wages are always lower than for the same job at a for-profit company.
Doc, what are the top five items food banks LOVE to receive? I'm doing a collection soon and want to ask for specifics.
MONEY. WE WANT MONEY. MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY. WE CAN DO SO MUCH WITH IT. WE HAVE ACCESS TO DEALS YOU COULD NEVER. MONEY
That aside.
I’m only going to talk about food items but if your food bank takes personal items, a lot of times diapers, feminine hygiene products, etc, are very very welcome.
1) Canned chicken and beef
looooooove this stuff. It’s expensive, it lasts forever, it tastes good and it can be used a variety of ways. This stuff is fucking catnip to food banks, it’s so hard for us to provide proteins.
2) Fancy nut butters
Peanut butter is a standby for food banks as a shelf-stable inexpensive protein, but if we have a family with a kid with a peanut allergy that’s not going to work. Non-peanut butters are expensive and it’s something we hardly ever see donated. (we also like peanut butter, but that’s easier for us to buy ourselves than non-peanut butters)
3) Canned or packaged tuna
You may notice a trend here in shelf-stable proteins. And yeah. That’s basically it, so I’m not going to keep harping on it. But this stuff is a godsend.
4) Easy breakfast things for kids (Granola bars, instant oatmeal, and the like)
Whatever Donald Trump tells you, most people who get food from food banks are actually working their asses off and so they have to leave Obama to raise their baby or whatever, and they don’t have a lot of time in the morning. Things like this that kids can make for themselves are expensive. (Another trend you may be noticing–donate shit that costs a lot of money. That helps us more than all the shitty green bean cans in the world) But they are so helpful for busy working families where the parents may not have a set schedule and sometimes little Amanda is making her own breakfast before she runs off to school. Don’t let kids go to school hungry.
5) Shelf-stable juice
This is one people never think of! But if you show up with a bunch of (preferably reduced sugar stuff) bottles of juice at my door, oh man, you are gonna get so many check mark and okay hand emoticons. This stuff is great for kids, and it doesn’t require refrigeration until it’s opened, so it works great for food drives.
#she used to work at a food bank and now works at a zoo#example of a current issue is that companies like to donate to let kids from underprivileged schools visit the zoo for field trips#which is a cheap way to say 'we helped 100 kids!'#but she can't get anyone to fund the internship program#which allows a teenager who's interested in animals and conservation as a career to intern over the summer#in which case a donation of thousands of dollars only helps 1 child#but arguably could have a more tangible impact#that's just an example but it's the kind of nuance I wouldn't have thought about

#thinking about how weird it feels to have the career ive wanted my entire life actually be within my grasp now
#‘career’ as in general field i wanna be in#also i still want to do 485939 other things too so im always second guessing myself BUT thats not what this is about#for context ive wanted to work with big cats since i was really really really really young#like it was set in stone in my brain by the time i was like 7 lol#anyway one of my professors reached out to me and asked if id be open to discussing possible opportunities to help around her#animal behavior lab bc she was rly impressed w my work this semester and im like $&&$&$/$/&;($&:/&/;$&;. you know#and one of her programs is with TIGERS#and then. in order to complete my major i have to do an internship over the summer#like no matter what. and it’s crazy to me bc that means in 6 months time i will (hopefully) be there. working with big cats as an intern#it doesn’t seem real to me it’s always just been something i wanted to do but never thought i actually would#there’s a lot of them im gonna apply for that have like housing on site so id literally be living there for like 3 months#ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh i want it so bad#and then i can actually put experience w large dangerous animals on my resume#instead of just cats and dogs YEAHHHHHHHH#*personal
