on the outside i look like i'm doing alright but on the inside i am feeling the urge to rewatch 500 days of summer. everyone has their demons

500 days of summer

too many people interpret 500 days of summer as this “nice guys finish last” movie that paints summer as the villain and tom as the victim. however, it’s supposed to be like that. the film is the writers way of processing his own grief and is essentially his own story and point of view, so of course he’s going to see the girl that broke his heart as a villain. the film is self aware bc it showcases tom as an unreliable narrator (when he is in love with summer, he points out what he loves about her, but when they break up he points out the same things to be what he hates about her). the film was never about tom being the victim and summer being the villain. it’s about being myopic and seeing things through a limited perspective. we never see summers pov, and if we did the movie would be a lot different. that’s what we as the audience need to understand. we can’t trust tom to truthfully and completely tell the story, because we only see his pov, the same way that we can only see things from our perspective. even if someone is so seemingly perfect for you, they might not see you in the same way, and you can’t make them out to be a villain because of that. romance doesn’t solve all your problems, and the sooner you realize that, the happier you’ll be.
