Just rewatched all of atla bc of the new Netflix atla buzz (both excited and not eeeee) and I have thoughts on future kataang, having looked into whether to read the comics or not - I wish they'd left Aang to be SHORTER! Am I the only one that can't see the connection between the adult Aang drawings to child Aang? Yes, of course he has to mature but he loses all his cheeky open face and you don't have to be taller to be older, neither do you have to be taller than your girlfriend. Like he has short king energy, let him LIVE!

the words to keep you (which I've just finished!!🥳) is definitely my number one favorite right now. This fic has been a labor of love for nearly 3 years, and it's finally finished and edited and fully published and I'm so proud of myself for getting it done and out there. 56k words of pure Sukka pining (and thirsting 😏) and the longest, most elaborate thing I've written to date.

The Way Old Friends Do is another definite fave. Written as a gift for @boomerangguy prompted by one of his favorite tropes, I had so much fun writing it, and I have so much fun whenever I re-read it. Sukka best friends-to-lovers and a rather tame interpretation of the "only one bed" trope, I just love the way all the Gaang friendships are portrayed, all the little nuances of their interactions and their personalities. And then there's that sweet, sweet transition from the closeness and intimacy of deep friendship to the blushing heat of new romance, which has some personal significance for me as well. 😉

At Least They Don't Call Me Dumpling Weed is a special one. Another gift fic that I wrote for @pidgeapodge for a solstice exchange, the prompt asked for family fun with Suki and Sokka's kids, and somehow that catapulted me into a realm of writing way outside my usual: 1st person POV, told from the perspective of a young teen, who by the way is an OC, and which focuses primarily on her life and her relationship with her (OC) siblings and cousins and only contains little crumbs of Sukka. The whole time I was writing it I was like "what am I doing???" but I reread it recently and was super pleased with it. I love the voice of the POV character, I love her interactions with her cousin Bumi, I love the little Sukka crumbs, and I love the character development and the overall message.

the longest night's embrace is, once again, a solstice exchange gift fic and, once again, outside my usual comfort zone. And for that reason it's also special to me. This is a Kya x Hakoda x Bato fic with lots of very soft family feels, and I really enjoyed the challenge of writing not only a ship other than Sukka but a poly ship at that. I'm very happy with how it came out, how well it all works together and the delicate intimacy between all the characters. Also baby Sokka. 🥹

Infinite Limits (or Sokka and the Secret Tunnel) is...an absolutely ridiculous fic, but another one that I think is super fun. A very awkward Sukka first time fic, I love this one because of the less-than-perfect portrayal of losing one's virginity and because I think Sokka's voice in this one is so engaging and funny. I adore writing Sokka, but I definitely struggle sometimes with his style and sense of humor, and I think I did a decent job in this one.

Suki eagerly opened the door, wincing as she accidentally slammed it closed. She took a deep breath and rolled her shoulders. Time to leave work at work and just enjoy the rest of her night with her hubby.

Speaking of her hubby, he was sitting in an armchair with a book in his lap, looking at her with concern creasing his brows. When they made eye contact, he smiled at her. “Hi, babe. How was work?”

She toed off her shoes, shaking her head. She didn’t want to talk about work. “Sokka, can you get me a glass of wine?”

Sokka’s eyes widened as if he was startled. “Yeah,” he grunted, quickly getting up from the chair and scampering to the kitchen. Suki raised her eyebrow at him as he went. That was odd.

She sighed as she threw her keys in the bowl and hung up her jacket and purse.

Sokka came back a moment later after she had collapsed onto the couch, with two glasses of cab, he handed her one gingerly. Then he hesitantly sat down on the other side of the couch and again she raised another eyebrow at him for the distance.

“Is everything okay?” He asks, “Did I make you mad?”

Suki gave him a puzzled look, “No, you haven’t made me mad at all. Why would you think that? I just had a bad day at work.”

He released a side of relief. “Oh good, I thought that I had done something to make you upset because you said my actual name.”

Suki giggled before teasing, “I’m sorry, babe, I’m not mad at you at all. In fact, all I really want is to cuddle with my husband and drink some wine.”

Sokka gladly drew her closer and wrapped an arm around her waist as she settled on his lap. He buried his nose into her neck. “I will gladly cuddle with my wife after she’s had a bad day. And please don’t call me Sokka unless you’re pissed.”

She giggled again, “Of course, my cuddlypoops.”

I hope this isn't weird but I'm so glad I found this blog. I'm new to Avatar Sokka/Suki and I had no idea there was so much already out there. Thank you (and for the fic rec list) but can you tell me how you got into them?

Omg, no, this isn't weird at all!! I'm legitimately so happy to hear you say this, like...no joke, this has kinda been my dream for the past few years and is basically the reason I've been attempting to curate Sukka stuff the way that I do. So...yay!!

Which ties nicely into how I got into them, I guess!

So, like a lot of other folks, I got back into ATLA during the 2020 Renaissance when the animated show got put on Netflix. And while I'd always liked Sokka (he was one of my top 3 faves when I first watched the show years ago, behind Appa and Iroh), this time around, I got really attached to him. Something about his sense of humor was hitting just right (my husband has a similar sense of humor but we'll just ignore that and move along *innocent whistling*). And then watching him grow over the course of the series and gain all these badass skills and become a competent leader...it drew me in hard. So of course, given how endeared I was to him, I just really wanted him to get to kiss his super awesome girlfriend as much as possible.

I also think there was something about this, like...really tender, playful, healthy portrayal of a romantic relationship that I found compelling. I gush a lot about their casual intimacy. How they'll be on the sidelines of a scene but still touching one another. Or how easy and carefree they are when they tease each other. But because their romance is relatively subtle and in the background of the main action of the story, it also left me wanting more. So of course I went to AO3, and I was like "AO3, gimme all the Sokka Suki kissing stories." But unfortunately I burned through what I found way too quickly.

(Just for fun, I did an "otp:true" search on AO3 for Sukka just now, and only ~70 of the 289 fics that currently meet that criteria were published pre-Renaissance. The fact that that number has quadrupled in the past four years is thrilling to me! But it also gives you an idea of what the Sukka landscape was like then.)

So yeah, I started writing Sukka fic to fill the Sukka-shaped hole in my gut, and it's been sort of self-reinforcing ever since then. I couldn't stop thinking about them, so I started writing about them, but writing about them means I just keep thinking about them, etc etc... And I've been here ever since! Plus I've made some really good friends from writing Sukka, and they're all such enablers. 😉

Long story short, Sukka inspired me in a way I hadn't been inspired in years. They got me writing again when, before that, I hadn't really written anything in maybe a decade. Being into Sukka is a compulsion. 😅

I'm so glad you found the fic rec list useful! I've been terrible about maintaining it lately, but you've totally inspired me to get back in there. It can be kinda frustrating going through the Sukka tag, or at least it used to be, since they so often appear as just a background ship in fics. Now there's the "otp:true" search and the "Enforce first-tagged?" browser extension that are both really effective filters. But yeah, I started that rec list partly because I wanted other Sukka fans to have an easier time finding Sukka stuff than I did! Then again, if I'd found it easier, I might not have started writing them. 😃
