"Should Have Known Better" By Sufjan Stevens

Background: Joaquin and Myria grew up with their father. Their mother left when they were very young, and their memories of her are blurry and fleeting. Their father was an ambitious and cold guy, the kind of individual that considers his children no more than receptacles for his own ego. The kind of person who shouldn't be a parent. Cobo (Joaquín) was always more diligent than Mimi (Myria), more adjusted to the reality of meeting certain expectations, of being what he was supposed to be. Mimi, on the other hand, was always more fragile, more hyperactive, but still softer. All the anxiety that comes with a child trapped between the expectant desires of adults and her own confusion simmered for years until, at 18, the boiling point gave her the clarity of a pure and organic identity, but totally opposite to what was expected from her. Mimi was not going to be anyone's exemplary son. She was going to be a woman who seeks peace, and nothing more. At that time, Cobo was already too deep inside other people's dreams and it took an accident that took part of his body and a large part of his mind to understand that sometimes the only way to survive is to jump off the moving train. Octavia became a part of their lives during Cobo's recuperation as his assigned nurse.
