cont. [Thistle x Pippa]
@southrnweed
She turns around slowly, glaring at him in whatever dim light her flashlight gave off. "Seriously?" she whisper-hissed. "You've brought me to an abandoned place in the middle of fuck-off-who-knowsville for 'enrichment', as you called it, and you're seriously making dad jokes?"
New York City's Princess looks like one of the scared rats she used to share a subway car with. There's a fire in her eyes. Red hot, but trusting.
"I swear, you fuck, if you make a dad joke before I die out here, I'll come back for you in your sleep."

— a starter for PHILIPPA ESPINA ( @tiltedview )
Tumblr media
The familiar chiming of the bell rings throughout the store — signalling that a CUSTOMER has just entered. For a second, Sully has half a mind to pretending not to hear it and continuing on with his NAP but eventually, with an exasperated sigh, he forces himself up and out of his hiding spot in the back. Immediately, a practised lie begins to pass his lips as he dusts his hands off his trousers ( for added effect ), ❝ Sorry ‘bout that, I was just putting some BOOKS away — ❞ but at the sight of a familiar, young brunette, he immediately knows that his words are falling upon DEAF EARS so Sully saves his breath and shuts his mouth. Instead, he raises an eyebrow at Pippa, a questioning look on his face. ❝ You’re not running from someone are you? Because I got to go out for lunch in like, five minutes, so.. ❞

Tiny Goldfinch details that make me feel insane:
-Theo getting a glass of water when coming up with a lie to tell Hobie and remarking it’s what his father always did
-Theo telling his mother off for talking to someone and her saying he’s like his father and Theo’s immediate guilt
-Theo obsessively studying as if he could scrub away the guilt and shame and disgust he felt towards himself for no reason he could identify
-Mrs Barbour saying goodbye to Theo and looking like she was forgetting to say smth
-Boris taking his fathers gold lighter and putting it into Theo’s bag after he remarked on it once
-Theo and Tom cutting their palms, shaking hands and promising to be brothers 2 weeks before Tom betrayed him, leading to his mother’s death vs Theo beating Boris bloody until his knuckles were split and Boris kissing them to let him know all was forgiven, weeks before Boris stole the goldfinch. Theo remembering this all right before Boris came back and he found out abt Kitsey and Tom
-The clock being one minute to midnight in the photo of Andy and Mr Barbour.
-Andy’s innate almost prophetic fear of water. Being born with the knowledge of how he was going to die.
-Mrs Barbour inadvertently being the one to introduce Theo to drugs
-Theo’s mother saying the moon is home and Boris telling Theo his name means moon along with the quote “home is wherever I am. The center of my earth is you”
-Theo’s mother calling him puppy and the story in Theo’s suicide note of the injured puppy they couldn’t save
-Pippa being the “morphine lollipop”
-Theo’s terrifying dreams of his mother, trying to get home to her, only to realise he never could or it wasn’t actually her. Stuck haunting subway stations in his dreams never to return home again.

i think about this line in the book a lot. it's right after platt explains that the day mr. barbour and andy died, kitsey was supposed to be there but she wanted to go to a party so she asked andy to go to maine and take care of their dad instead.
what stands out to me is that this is what theo was first attracted to her for, the sense of a common dread. first, lets talk about how it relates to his love of pippa. he loves pippa because she was in the explosion with him. he remarks about her appearance being odd and how her limp makes it hard for other people to like her, citing that he is the only person that could love her. the only time that theo forges a real connection with pippa, not an idealized version of her he forces himself to love, is when they talk about their shared trauma. he likes that she has PTSD too, that she can't go on subways, that she lost welty the same way he lost his mom. what he wants from pippa is to be in a relationship where he can finally be seen.
so when he sees how kitsey has this trauma almost the exact same as his, sees that she is responsible for a death however indirectly and was forced to live, he thinks he can finally have a connection where he is seen. theo, of course, does not let himself be seen. he hides his drug problem and his fraud. he hides the very rapidly approaching debt his business is going to be in when he must buy back the frauds. none of his current struggles are shared with her BUT
kitsey doesn't show her trauma either. she never talks about her trauma, never expresses grief over the death of her family members. he's never able to have a deep conversation with out her turning the conversation to a joke. and then, he sees her crying on tom cable's shoulder, and its clear: they don't know each other. they don't trust each other. they don't care for each other past trying to make mrs. barbour happy. theo just wants family, the mother who tried to adopt him and never could. he wants to be seen without ever giving himself up. no one has ever seen him except for boris.
and imagine how lonely he felt for those eight years

It’s RELEASE DAY!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Nearly six years after beginning work on this story, I am so proud (and, yes, terrified) to announce that Against the Wall in now available for purchase on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and Apple Books.
Against the Wall is a romantic comedy set in New York City, but the story has always been more than that for me. It’s about learning to embrace life and love again after enduring personal tragedy, a topic near and dear to my heart. I hope you love Miriam and her sweet talkin’ guy even a fraction as much as I do.
-Pippa
Blurb:
Miriam Perlman’s new neighbor is an absolute nightmare. Sexually insatiable and devastatingly handsome, the guy seems to be on a mission to seduce half of New York City. Every night, Miriam is forced to endure the sounds of the most casual of sex through the thinnest of walls that separate their apartments. The nightly decathlons are ruining her sleep, impacting her social life (well, whatever is left of it, anyway), and making life completely impossible. As if that weren’t bad enough, he alternates between playfully flirting with her—even going so far as to bring her daily homemade baked goods—and acting like she’s invisible. Half the time he pursues her; the other half of the time he finds her about as compelling as a crack in the sidewalk. She has no idea what to make of him, or of the fact that whenever he smiles at her, she wants to be the one he takes home. It's a confusing game, and it’s pushing her to the brink. If there’s one thing Miriam Perlman knows, it’s that her womanizing next-door neighbor is definitely not the guy for her. ...Right? Pippa Glencoe’s contemporary romance, Against the Wall, explores the hilariously disastrous effects of assuming you know everything about your neighbors—no matter how thin the walls between you might be. Against the Wall is the first book in The Subway Series, a collection of standalones about a group of friends searching (or not) for their HEA in New York City.

Not a Summer Crush Part Five
a/n: i haven't been doing this on purpose, but i keep alternating, long chapter followed by short chapter. i think the longest is 6k words and this one is 2.5k-ish, my apologies for its shortness. but!! this one has everyone's favorite Rita Calhoun, jealousy, Serena Southerlyn's meddling tactics, middle school, and even graduate school. enjoy, and remember any feedback is appreciated more than you all could ever know.
Part Five
When Alex got home from work that evening, she finally had a moment to process that day’s moment on the courthouse steps. She texted Serena, trying to fit all the pieces together in her head.
Alex: What the hell?
Serena: ?
Alex: Serena!
Serena: Yes?
She gave up on coherent texting and decided to call her friend instead.
---
Casey was confusing herself again. Having second thoughts was not how she would put it. No, she was still sure of what she wanted (as sure as she was going to be, doing something very new and all), it was the methods that were bothering her. Namely, that she felt like she had none.
Alex had been difficult early on. The beginning was, in most respects, the most difficult time of their relationship. They had both been in rough patches, trying to be different people than they’d been before, and Casey thought, hoped, they’d both been successful. Alex had found a sense of balance and justice that guided her to powerful places. And Casey could look around her life and point lots of little things out: the tennis racquet beside her softball bat, their well-stocked kitchen, the literary journals lined up in a row on her bookshelf, little markers of stability and self-assuredness that reminded her how she’d changed and stayed the same over the years. She hadn’t felt this untethered since she kissed Alex for the first time.
“Casey, it’s called having a crush,” Rita said after she explained herself over a scotch.
---
“What’s going on, Alex?” Serena’s voice came over the speakerphone as Alex set it down on the countertop.
“Do you want to tell me why you asked my second chair out on the courthouse steps in the middle of the afternoon on a Wednesday?”
Serena laughed at her. “I don’t think I did,” she said.
“Hey, Caroline,” Alex mocked Serena’s slightly husky voice, “Won’t you please reserve me a spot on your dance card this weekend?” She said as she popped the cork out of a bottle of wine with an angry pop as punctuation.
“I don’t talk like that,” Serena said. “And all I did was tell her I wanted to dance, I don’t think I asked her for anything, in fact.”
“I don’t remember it like that.”
“So it’s on your mind, huh.”
“Shut up.”
“Oh my god.” Alex thought of what to say as she sipped.
“I mean,” Serena filled the silence, “If you aren’t going to, I will, you know?”
“Serena!” Alex all but yelled into the phone.
“Uh-huh,” she replied, “that’s what I thought.” She paused for a moment, then said, “I wasn’t
asking her out, I was giving you a reason to go dancing with her again.
“I don’t follow.”
“Sure you don’t. Look, I’ll make a groupchat with you, Casey, me and Caroline, and make plans in there, thus implying that all of us are going. It’s simple.”
“What?” Alex asked, actually not following her friend at this point.
“Just let it happen, Lex. Where is Casey, anyway?”
Alex swirled her wine around. “Rita absconded with her after work today. She said it was something about a case.”
“I don’t think they’re opposing one another on anything right now,” Serena said.
“I’ve learned not to ask questions,” Alex said, referencing the schemes Rita and her wife liked to pull occasionally. Then, realizing what she might be implying, she said, “Remember Sophie’s birthday last year?” and was answered with Serena’s light laugh from the other end of the call.
---
Casey’s eyes widened. “Yeah, I guess so.” Rita was surprised that Casey didn’t fight her on it. She decided to push.
“So, when are you going to ask her out?” Casey looked at her.
“We haven’t like, set a date,” she said. “Do people usually set dates for that kind of thing?
“They usually have a plan of some kind, I think. I mean, I do.”
Rita’s phone buzzed three times, two texts and a photo from Pippa. She didn’t hide her nerves fast enough for Casey to miss it. She shot her friend a look over her glass, saying, “you have a plan, right?”
Rita rolled her eyes. “Stop deflecting.” This time it was Casey’s turn to get the notifications.
New Groupchat (4)
Serena: So, Saturday night, right? Where?
Caroline: Why don’t you meet me at my apartment? The place is kind of hard to find.
Serena: Works for me. Alex? Casey?
Casey had no idea what the texts were about, suspected Serena of some kind of scheme.
Casey: Sure? But what are we doing?
Serena: Dancing!
Caroline: Dancing. Ashley’s on the road so I needed another partner.
Alex: We’re going dancing on Saturday.
Casey looked up from her phone to find an expectant Rita looking at her. “Apparently, I’m going dancing on Saturday.
“With Caroline?”
“And Alex. And Serena.”
Rita smiled wryly. “Good luck.”
---
“Okay, okay, order, order,” you said quieting the room of middle schoolers at the end of practice. “Remember, I can’t be there with you this weekend at the competition, and I have to leave early tonight,” you said, to a chorus of sighs, “I know, I know, I’m sorry. But you’ll all do great, I know it. Listen to your teachers, stick to your plans, and do your best.” The adoring eyes of the team were all on you. “And, if you win, I’ll buy you pizza. Deal?”
Nothing motivates tweens like a pizza party, but you weren’t worried about their performance. If nothing else, you knew Ophélie was a zealous team captain, putting it delicately. She had learned to be persistent from you, which was great at a competition, more annoying when she had chores. You gave her a quick hug and kiss on the cheek as you said goodbye to the team, despite her “no affection in public rule” (because the nature of the adolescent is to be embarrassed), and sent a text to Casey letting her know you’d be out soon.
When you saw her waiting for you outside the school building, your heart skipped a beat. It was that same feeling that you’d felt when Alex was in your apartment-- an intimacy that should’ve felt unusual, out of place, instead felt perfectly natural and comfortable. You hugged in greeting, grateful that you’d all decided that would be acceptable affection for colleagues.
“You know,” you said, “You really didn’t have to come meet me here.” Casey shrugged.
“I wanted to. Nice sweater,” she said, teasing you. It was one of those summer evenings where the sunset had brought a cool breeze with it, and you’d stolen one of Ophélie’s uniform cardigans. It was simple and navy blue, but the school logo embroidered on the breast gave it away. The two of you walked together towards the nearest subway station.
“Thanks,” you said, in an unserious tone. “Where’s Alex?”
“She’s already at the bar,” Casey replied, “I was told to retrieve you before the announcement.”
“It can’t be any big surprise,” you said, wondering. “She’s been agonizing over these applications forever.”
“She’s Gillian. She agonizes.” You looked up at the buildings, lights beginning to come on in the apartment buildings and off in the offices. Casey looked at your lifted head and the way it created a line, sloping and elegant, jawline to neck to collarbone. She pushed one palm with the opposite thumb and bit her lip, thinking about her conversation with Rita. She was right, they needed a plan, or one of these days she was going to kiss you without thinking.
Your voice snapped her out of it, but she didn’t hear what you said. “Casey?”
“Sorry, what?”
“I asked if you were excited to come dancing again this weekend.” The two of you walked down the stairs to the subway station, you in front, looking over your shoulder as Casey answered you.
“Oh! Yes, I definitely am. I didn’t know that Serena could dance, Alex told me it was her idea.”
“Apparently she studied abroad. I’m glad she asked, though.” That gave the knot of jealousy in Casey’s stomach a tug. She had no right to be jealous, but she couldn’t help but feel it. Serena is beautiful, and single, she doesn’t work with them, she’s super smart and funny, and apparently she knows how to dance.
“I’m glad we’ll have enough people to switch up partners a couple times,” Casey said, assuaging the jealousy.
“That’s the best part,” you agreed.
---
You made it to the table just in time to hear the announcement.
The third announcement. It would appear that Rita had somehow gotten ahold on all of Gillian’s acceptance letters and was withholding them from the rest of the group (except, of course, for the honoree herself, who was happy to go along with the plan, not that she had much of a choice). Glasses were raised and congratulations expressed as Rita said, “the third acceptance is… Yale!”
Polite applause came around the table. Gillian smiled bashfully as everyone told her how proud they were. Of all of you, she was the only person smart enough (or crazy enough) to go back to school after navigating the complex legal world of New York City.
“Which ones did we miss?” Casey said as the two of you slid into the two open seats.
“She got into Columbia,” Serena said, “which means she could stay in Manhattan. A few glasses around the table were raised again, encouraging her to stay close.
“And Stanford,” Alex added. You shot Gillian an excited look, happy at the mention of your alma mater.
“How many more letters are there?” You asked. Rita checked the pile of envelopes in her hand.
“Two.”
As soon as Sophie noticed that neither you nor Casey yet had a drink, there were whiskeys in your hands. As soon as Serena remembered that you were returning from coaching a mock trial team, and remembering what she knew of Casey’s feelings about kids, she began to ask you questions. How was the team, what case are they presenting, do they love you, (truly who wouldn’t). She was almost tiring you out.
“Is she always this persistent?” you asked Alex, smiling at Serena as you did so. You had to know if your eyes were deceiving you, your wishful thinking getting the best of your powers of observation yesterday when you saw her jealous look.
You were correct.
Almost faster than could be perceived, Alex’s eyes narrowed, looking into Serena’s, not yours; as if to say what the hell are you doing. Raised shoulders, her fingers pressing slightly into the table, her tongue in the back of her throat: you’d seen enough jealous boyfriends (of women you were about to dance with, if you’re honest) in clubs to know what it looked like.
Well. That was going to be good information to have at your disposal. If nothing else, for
confirmation: that you weren’t crazy, that there was something there to notice, from both of them.
---
You would’ve considered your offer of your apartment more thoroughly had you initially understood that there would be four of you going out that Saturday night. You weren’t sure, at first, if Serena had been asking you out. Honestly, you would probably not turn her down if she did. It would certainly be a simpler path to take, and there was no denying that Serena was beautiful and smart. Of course, your affections were otherwise engaged.
But, since she had invited Casey and Alex along, you considered it more likely that she was “creating some amount of opportunity,” (a real thing you’d really heard her say once) than making a double date. It would make sense, you thought, if Alex had told her how she was feeling; and the more days that went by, the more little tender interactions, the more often you noticed her resting her eyes in your direction, the more confident you were that you weren’t making up the chemistry.
Casey was a little harder to read, but you had noticed she’d seemed slightly… preoccupied the last few times you’d been alone together. One thing you knew: their marriage was rock solid. Neither of them would do something without the others’ approval. You could only hope they had a plan. You didn’t-- unless trying to seem as desirable yet appropriate as possible could be considered a plan.
There were four people in your apartment. You couldn’t remember the last time you had people over to your place rather than Ashley and Ramin’s, so it felt especially cramped. You were each drinking a glass of wine (from Ramin’s fancy stash, you were not going to let them know just yet that the only wine you bought was two buck chuck), you and Serena were sitting on the barstools at your counter while Alex and Casey sat on the couch. You had your music collection on shuffle, which led to a few laughs at the funny combinations.
It was your turn to feel jealous, or maybe to yearn. You hoped that one of them would see the new collection of books sitting on your table: Marriage and Other Alternatives, More Than Two, and What Love Is (and what it could be). A quiet buzz of anticipation (or was it the wine?) pleasantly lodged itself in your mind as the four of you slung your bags over your shoulders and headed out for the night.
---
Pippa Cox touched her lipstick up in the mirror before returning to the table she was (finally) sharing with Rita Calhoun. For such a smart woman, Pippa had often thought, Rita was prone to running from her feelings. Having gotten her on this date was a feat indeed, even though she knew (the glances, the blushing, the way she would drift into her space, natural as anything) that they shared feelings. As Pippa sat down, Rita smiled.
Unfortunately, as Rita reached for her glass, her phone buzzed in her purse. She shrugged-- what was the point of texting when she was on a date? If it was a client, they would call her secretary who would call her. No need to fret.
“It’s nothing, I’m sure,” she said, reaching across the table to take Pippa’s hand in her own. She knew how difficult it had been for her to get back into dating, to trust anyone with her heart, which was part of why she had been so apprehensive to pursue her even though the attraction was there. She’d pinched herself when Pippa had been the one to ask, happy to be the pursued for once.
“Good,” Pippa said, “because I want you to myself tonight.” Rita nodded, bit her lip, and smiled. There was another buzz, then another, then another. Three in a row? The only people she knew who texted like that were Casey and Serena, both of whom had plans tonight.
Plans together, with Alex. Involving Caroline. She sighed, hoping that she wasn’t about to do something to hurt Pippa’s feelings. Pippa, to her credit, looked curiously at Rita’s bag as she opened it.
Notifications: 4 new messages.
Serena: This experience is simultaneously adorable and infuriating.
Serena sent a photo.
Serena sent a video.
Serena: I’m tempted to leave and let them figure it out.
Rita laughed to herself. The picture was a selfie of you four sitting at a booth, you and Alex on one side and Casey and Serena on the other. Serena had her head leaned on Casey’s shoulder, who looking across the table, while you were pressing a kiss to Alex’s cheek. Alex had a contented smile, and your table had evidence of more than a couple drinks for each of you. The video was one of you and Alex. You were holding one of her hands with the other wrapped around her waist. Alex looked terrified, poor thing, every body part was flying in the opposite direction. The sounds of Casey and Serena encouraging you both mixed with the horns and drums coming from the stage. Rita agreed with Serena, it was adorable and infuriating.
Rita: Well, that’s cute and maddening for sure.
Serena: I’ll send updates.
Rita: Tomorrow. Please don’t interrupt *my* date again, thank you.
Serena: OMG did she finally ask you out!?!??
Rita: TOMORROW.
Rita put her phone down, answering Pippa’s curious look with a wave of her hand. “Serena drama,” she said, and Pippa gave an understanding nod. “I made her promise to leave me alone for a while.” Pippa leant across the table and pecked Rita’s lips.
“Good.”

the Goldfinch is a hot mess
As someone who adored The Secret History I am astounded at just how much is wrong with The Goldfinch. I was taken in by the first 250 pages or so, right up until things went off the rails in Las Vegas and the novel loses its footing only to spend 600+ pages never finding it again. (spoilers under the cut)
Theo as a kid is easy to sympathize with. Even though he’s a bad kid whose been dealt a crappy hand, you get the sense that he can still have an okay life. He’s smart, he likes reading, he appreciates art, he loves his mom. Unfortunately he grows up to be a thoroughly unlikeable and irredeemable sleaze-bag who makes nothing but bad decisions and betrays the one person in the world who actually cares about him. So why does he face no consequences for these bad decisions? I was utterly baffled when Theo confesses his terrible deeds to Hobie -- an anxiety-inducing moment built up for 400+ pages -- just for Hobie to essentially go “Okay whatever lol” and start bloviating about Rembrandt. Theo’s “relationship” with Kitsey and her family is unchanged and they all still tolerate him and have him round at dinner. Boris (who, let’s be real, would never have survived to adulthood) remains Theo’s best bud, gives him a pile of money, and administers a lecture on Dostoyevsky. Aside from his boring and repetitive psychological torment, Theo never faces any actual consequences for the art theft or the murder (also, do security cameras not exist? He and Boris should have been apprehended in 0.004 seconds). He doesn’t even care that he’s spiraled into someone way worse than his father -- his dad was also a drug addict who got mixed up in the criminal world, but he never shot and killed anyone. Oh, but he cares (a lot) that he’s starting to resemble his father in the face. The horror. Additionally, Theo barely faces consequences for being a drug addict, he’s able to meticulously keep his habit in check and hide it from the people he lives with, and he doesn’t even suffer a headache when he ODs -- he simply splashes some water on his face and he’s off to sell antiques! Wow, lucky him! Does Manic Pixie Pippa in her cocoon of 95 scarves ever berate Theo or give him an unkind word for his creepy behavior or inappropriate gift? Nope, not a chance. Theo finishes college and -- despite being a willful underachiever who can barely do the work -- starts up a book club with Pippa, muses about Henry David Thoreau with Boris (when they’re not hungover and huffing glue) and quotes Nietzsche. Does Theo at least suffer from being deeply closeted and trapped in a passionless marriage to someone he doesn’t even like? Of course not. Also, why would anyone -- let alone an old money daughter of NYC socialites -- want to marry such an uncharismatic loser, who doesn’t even commit to getting his own apartment (despite making hundreds of thousands of dollars with his antiques racket) because dear sweet Hobie lets him squat upstairs for pennies? Seriously, this was nauseating.
The scenes in NYC were so bad and nonsensical. I promise New York isn’t as tawdry as the novel might have one believe. Theo and his mom are poor --digging in the sofa for loose change poor -- but they eat out all the time and take taxis?? Why don’t they live in a rat-infested flatshare in Washington Heights or the Bronx if they’re so poor they can barely afford to take the subway? And how are they budgeting for a housekeeper (!!!) and a two-bedroom (!!) Seventh Avenue apartment building?  Also, even in the nicest NYC high rises you’re lucky if there’s a doorman at all, let alone a soccer team full of them who tend to you like personal butlers. Why are ‘club kids’ hanging out in a diner at 5am, is this 1983? Why do all the Puerto Ricans have to speak Spanglish? Why is Theo’s engagement party regarded as some high society debutante ball when he’s a nobody from nowhere with nothing to offer his bride-to-be? Wouldn’t there be tons of people dissuading Kitsey from marrying this guy, trying to set her up with some aging billionaire? Why couldn’t she at least have been average-looking or slightly ugly (you know, like Andy?) which might have explained why she felt the need to settle for Theo? Why does Mrs. Barbour like Theo so much? It was pretty apparent that she regarded him as little more than a pet and a charitable tax writeoff back when she considered "keeping” him. Why does Mrs. Barbour age 120 years by the end, shrinking into a bedridden shriveled half-starved husk, but Hobie doesn’t age at all? And are we really supposed to believe that criminals and junkies nodding off in a heroin den would be erudite eloquent art history scholars waxing poetic for dozens of pages about the minutiae of oil and gesso?
Those last 10 pages were so bad it hurt. It gave me palpable second-hand embarrassment to consider that someone with actual, demonstrable Pulitzer-winning talent wrote this and not only thought it was publishable, but said to themselves, “Yes, this is what I want to spend 1,000 pages getting at: a tepid fortune-cookie platitude about Being Yourself and Love Setting You Free.” In the most tone-deaf, presumptuous bloated mass of writing I have ever endured, the text actually begins explaining to us what we should take away and how we should feel about it, before smugly praising its own self-established brilliance and grabbing us by the collar to demand that we discuss its fabulous characters and their fabulous character arcs in our fabulous reading groups: “Should we be more like dear sweet manic pixie Pippa, or rather more like Boris, the anarchist revolutionary polyglot who pours vodka in his cornflakes, recites Chekhov in his sleep, and is allergic to soap? Is Kitsey (who barely even qualifies as a character) right about...whatever she is right about?” And, of course, there just had to be some not-so-meta whinging about how “nobody will ever read this book”... what? Seriously, can someone explain what was going on in those last few pages? Why did the writing -- usually good, albeit winded -- suddenly and inexplicably devolve into a half-baked college entrance essay? The book should have been 400 pages and ended with Theo taking his own life at the hotel or turning himself in. That’s the person he was shaping up to be (sadly), a carbon copy of his father, not a corny, cringey pseudo-intellectual boring a-hole flitting about Antwerp and Nice ~finding himself~ and pontificating to us plebeians about how Lady Gaga and Disney are the ultimate beacons of the human endeavor. Seriously, oof.

Despite the storm outside there's a knock at Hobie's door, and he opens it to find Theo, soaked and slumped in the arms of a tall pale boy with fear-wide eyes who is overflowing with words that don't explain anything. "You are Hobart? I think he's really sick! Could barely remember address!" And it's only after Theo is warmed and dried and tucked safely into bed that Boris allows Hobie to loan him a towel and pour him some tea and try to piece together what exactly is going on. He's wired from adrenaline and amphetamines and the story is garbled to the point of incomprehesibility, and it's only when Hobie offers Boris the couch, and he says he'd rather sleep on the floor in Theo's room 'to keep an eye on him' that Hobie realizes how badly they need his help.
Theo gets better, and Popchyk starts enjoying walks, and Boris stops eyeing Hobie with suspicion. Theo and Boris are wary of everything, whispering to each other and going on long walks with their shoulders brushing, and it takes months of dinners and jokes before they are fully sure everything is not about to be ruined. The details of Vegas come out in snippets of stories and jokes that they throw at each other with boyish abandon, while Hobie bites back horror. Popchyk is spoiled to the point that anyone but the three of them would him untenable.
The first few months Boris spends pacing and snapping like a zoo animal- he isn't drinking so much, which throws him off, and whenever Hobie puts a hand on his shoulder or asks if he and Theo would like to go to the movies with him, he bristles at the unfamiliar warmth. But he is still grateful to be taken in at all, and while he has no eye for antiques he's happy to wrap them up for sale, and stand hawkishly behind Theo as he mans the counter upstairs. Once he masters the subway he's gallivanting over the city every weekend- concerts and new friends and little Russian bars he's too young to be allowed in. Before long he has a job at a restaurant that brings in far more money that it should, but he masters such a playful shrug and dismissal Hobie never worries about it like he should. And though it's unorthodox, when the lawyer eventually does track down Mr. Pavlikovsky, on a staticky phoneline from the other side of the world, he says his son is Hobie's if he wants him. When Boris hears, Hobie can't tell if that is what he was hoping for, but Hobie is happy anyway. Boris pulls his weight, and Hobie finds himself fond of his stomping footsteps and shouted curse words, breaking the silence of old things with youthful exuberance, and never failing to put Theo in peals of red-faced laughter.
Theo goes back to school, and while he doesn't excel he is perfectly passable. He wants to major in history or literature- he isn't sure which- and Boris helps him with his language requirement and usually does his homework for him once it's clear Theo has no head for it. He works at the shop afterschool, playing music quietly and reading while the customers aren't in, and looks up eagerly every time he hears booted footfalls at the door.
Pippa visits, and her and Boris take to each other like long lost siblings. They have each other in hysterics, recommending songs and books. Theo is unreadably awkward at first, but before long he joins in on the jokes, and the three of them are off on long outings who knows where whenever she is in town.
Boris and Theo never hold hands, though they tend to stand so close their fingers brush together. They never kiss in front of people (except for once when Boris had just gotten back and they didn't know Hobie was at the top of the stairs) and every now and then one of them gets a 'girlfriend' for a week or two and sends the other into childish fits of pouting. But Boris always makes sure Theo wears a coat in the winter- "it's not even cold Boris, aren't you from the Ukraine"- and Theo always gives Boris the last cigarette in the pack even when he doesn't ask for it, and while Hobie never feels the need to bring it up, neither of them ever moves out of the bed they shared.
About a year after they arrive on the doorstep, reeking of wet dog and desperation, Theo comes into the workshop, trembling. Boris is right behind him, with the shoe dragging step he has when he doesn't want to do something but knows he had to.
"Hobie, I have to tell you something." Theo said, swallows dryly, turns back to Boris with eyes wide. Boris tilts his head so he brushes against Theo's temple quickly, touches his back with one hand. 'It's okay Potter'.
Hobie blinks at the package Theo handed him, mummy like bandages of tape and newspaper carefully sliced open, and when he moves them aside he gasped in recognition at the painting within.
"I'm sorry," Theo says shakily. "It was a mistake, and I wasn't thinking, and I'm so so sorry."
Hobie looks at Theo, small and shaking, and Boris behind him staring right back at Hobie, one hand on the small of Theo's back and the other stiff at his side as if preparing for Hobie to take a swing at him. He looks at them, these two scared children who reminded him so much of him and Welty, clinging to each other and scrabbling for something steady to find purchase and haul each other onto solid ground, refusing to reach the shore without each other.
"Can- can you help me?" Theo asks finally, as if the question has been burning in his gut for years. And Hobie doesn't know how or what he will do, but he knows his answer.
"Yes. Of course."

more audrey pavlikovsky-decker hcs under the cut bc im just talking to myself
she’s fussy at night and has a hard time sleeping but as soon as boris starts singing the kitten lullaby and rubbing her back she falls asleep
u know the phrase it takes a village? they wrote that about theo and boris bc everyone around them knows that have 0 baby knowledge between the two of them so everyone steps in and tries to help
hobie is the world’s best grandpa he loves audrey to DEATH and is always willing to answer theo’s panicked late night calls. when audrey gets older she loves to sit in the shop and learn from hobie, which he calls airborne genetics from theo
aunt pippa is always good for a walk in the park and babysitting for the night when she’s in town (even tho theo and boris cringe when she calls it their date night)
theo panics and buys like 80 parenting books online and him and boris both skim the same ones and manage to come away with opposite takeaways somehow but all that matters at the end of the day is that audrey is fed and healthy
mrs barbour also loves audrey and she gives theo all of kitsey’s old clothes to dress her up in
boris and theo are both shocked at how instantly they fall in love with her and they have moments where even if they can’t say it they look at each other and theyre just like holy FUCK this is our baby and we would die for her no meme. theo in particular is SUPER anxious for the better part of a year because he can’t fathom losing her after everything that’s happened so he stays up watching her breathe every night for months
they’re both determined to give her better than what they had.... corny but true
she has soooo many nicknames in several different languages
boris speaks to her a lot in russian and polish but not enough to override the amount of english she hears every day so she knows a lot of specific words and phrases in other languages
theo is determined to give her his weird idealized new york city childhood so they spend a lot of time in central park and riding the subway and on good days he takes her to museums
they always reference vegas around her and she gets soooo mad when they won’t tell her the specifics until one day when she’s older and visiting they’re having a drink together and they finally tell her about all the shit they did and she’s just like hm. honestly cool but also sort of hypocritical that you guys made me like, go to school and not do drugs as a teenager
she goes to hippie schools bc her dads hate the idea of her being stuck in some boring traditional class
boris is fast friends with a lot of the moms in audrey’s class bc hes wildly charming
theyre the subject of a lot of speculation on parent teacher days. everyone wants to know if audreys dads are gonna show up so they can try and figure out their like...... Whole Thing
they have gotten many, many notes home about audrey swearing
she’s a fashion icon from a young age but honestly do you expect anything less from a pavlikovsky-decker
she loves to hear stories about her grandma and theo finds that telling audrey makes it a little easier every time
even as a little kid she is a MASTER arguer, which they both find hilarious. boris calls her their little lawyer (not that he wants her to go into law bc fuck that)
they spend a lot of time watching movies together-- old favorites of theo and boris’s and theo’s mom, and even occasionally a movie that theo’s dad liked
audrey is a major drama queen which each of them secretly thinks she got from the other (she knows the truth-- they are a family of dramatic bitches) she fully insists that she’s dying on days when she doesn’t want to go to school
she doesnt really get theo’s whole art thing, but she’s super into poetry and they have a lot of philosophical talks about what it means to love a piece of art
she grows up super politically active and into communism, and boris is always so proud when she says she’s going out to a protest
eventually she becomes a writer and publishes under the name audrey z.b pavlikovsky-decker and refuses to shorten it

don’t feel like you have to stay here to be polite.
Pippa looked up from her guitar to meet Oliver's gaze. He was much more ' twitchy ' than usual. Her eyes found their way up to the clock on the wall, and she let out a soft sigh.
"We have another twenty minutes," she said.
This was her fifth time playing music for him. He'd been one of four people to respond to an online ad she'd posted:
Musician looking for an excuse to practice: For a small fee, I'll play music for you if you're feeling lonely. In person or virtual possible. I can play guitar, piano, brass, upright bass and bass guitar and most percussion. Discreet, no questions asked, minimal verification.
It had been a year and twenty-eight days since she'd completely destroyed her hand falling down the subway stairs. This little 'gig' of hers was a good way to force herself to play. She couldn't bear the thought of performing professionally again with her dulled skill, but playing for people who needed company felt a little less serious. In a way.
Pippa picked at the bottom three strings with her slightly trembling hand.
"We can stop if you want. But I'm just fine," she paused, somewhat regretting her phrasing. She swallowed, smiled, and tried again.
"What I meant is, I'm enjoying this. But this is for you, too. I'm here because I want to be. If you'd rather I go, then tell me. Otherwise I'm going to keep playing."
She clicked her tongue, her eyes finding his again. "I'm having a good time here. With you. Promise."

ALL ABOUT LUCIE
— Gender/Pronouns: CIS Female, She/Her — Date of Birth: July 23rd, 1993 — Place of Birth: Maywood, Maine — Current Residence: Cedar Creek — Occupation: Singer/Songwriter — Faceclaim: Phoebe Tonkin
BIOGRAPHY
Trigger Warnings: Depression, parent death, cancer, alcohol, drugs
Lucie had dreamed of moving away from Maine as long as she could remember. Waking up in the dazzling city of New York with an apartment with views as far as the eye can see, going for drinks at trendy bars in, riding the subway on the morning commute, going to the theatre whenever she wanted and getting lost in the city that never sleeps.
That was her life for a while, but it never lasted. New York is where she wanted to make something of herself but with her party lifestyle and the skyrocketing prices of city apartments, she was forced to leave and move home.
Her childhood had been pretty average. She grew up in a typical two up-two down house with her mother and father and younger sister in a fairly nice side of town; your perfect nuclear family. She went to ballet class on a saturday morning, rode her bike in the street after school and had slumber parties with her best friends. Everything was normal until she turned thirteen. Her dad got sick, terminal cancer, and passed away the following year, leaving her, her mother and sister alone for the first time ever. Her mom tried hard to be both parents, I mean she really tried but life took its toll. She eventually crumbled under two jobs, just to make ends meet and fell into a deep depression leaving Lucie to take the reins. She did what she could, taking a part time job as soon as she turned sixteen, working after school and on weekends, but that still wasn’t enough. Her mom flipped between drinking and passing out in a drunken stupor and scarcely left the house - until they were forced to sell. The only joy the sixteen year old found was her weekends at the dance studio where she could sing and dance her little heart out until her reality was long forgotten, until this too became too expensive to continue. It was as if every ounce of happiness she once had was crushed into a thousand pieces and taken away from her until all she could do was write sad songs until she felt a little better.
Against all odds, after working full time and saving every penny she had for a year, Lucie landed herself a place at the prestigious TISCH School of the Arts in NYC on a full scholarship. It took everything for her to leave her Mum and sister but she had to try and make a life for herself and that wouldn’t happen if she stayed in the same sad neighborhood all her life.
New York was supposed to be her clean slate. But you can escape from the place all your problems lie, but that doesn’t mean they don’t follow you wherever you go. She worked hard and four years later she graduated. That summer she was determined she would audition and find a job and put her training to good use but nothing happened. So she partied. She drank. And she got high. Unintentionally following the footsteps of her own mother while she wrote songs, desperately trying to get them heard. Almost three years passed and aside from playing small gigs at seedy underground venues, nothing happened and she was broke. She only had one option; move home. This was the last thing she ever wanted to do, but after almost seven years away, Lucie was returning to Maywood.
But this wasn’t her giving up. This was just her starting a new chapter.
LUCIE O’CONNOR is currently played by Pippa.

Afternoon Repose / Main Pokemon Verse
repost / Kian, Cass, & Joey !!
KIAN grew up in the Kalos region and still lives at the family home in Camphrier Town. His family has always owned the pokemon daycare located on Route 7 to the west, and they’ve all helped out there since they were young. Kian came to love helping and caring for the pokemon there and gradually dedicated himself to being a pokemon breeder. He’s never enjoyed battling and decided this was a much better fit for him.
When he was a child, his mother put him in charge of watching and tending to a Shroomish that had been left in their care. It was simple, but it was one of the first times Kian had ever had the chance to be independent in the daycare. Weeks of caring to the Shroomish turned into months, and it almost felt as the though the little pokemon had been abandoned by an owner with no intention to return. Meanwhile, Kian had grown to have a strong connection to her, and over time, it felt like she was practically his own. Ophelia is what he came to call her, and now she’s a territorial Breloom with a strong sense of loyalty.
Kian’s team gradually grew from merely Ophelia to a darling Phantump (Rosalind), a Duosion (Narvi), a Starmie (Atlus), and his newest edition: a small Pumpkaboo named Mab. He’s also taken to caring for an egg that came from the Meowstics on his mother’s team. It’s not unusual to see his pokemon hanging around the daycare or lingering around him as he works.
Tumblr media
CASS is a pokemon watcher hailing from Unova but currently in the Kalos region as he searches for the rumored Pokemon Village. He hopes to observe the pokemon there and research why and how they come to live there. He was fascinated by the rumor since he was a young child and made sure that he’d be able to fulfill his dream of finding it.
Cass does not know his actual parents, as he was adopted at 5 years old by a man named Calvin Huxley, who works on the battle subway. Growing up in the white forest, Cass had to often entertain himself and that was often through interacting with the wide array of pokemon in the forest. It was there that he caught his first pokemon: a shinx named Dodger. Dodger has since evolved into a full Luxray and is essential to Cass’ studies since Luxray have great eyesight. On his journeys, he’s since caught an Audino (Aviva), a Banette (Pogo), a Sableye (Gibson), an Umbreon (Bones), and a Mimikyu (Wattson aka Watt).
Since he started doing research, Cass travels across the regions depending on his studies. He’s often found in Kalos simply because he hasn’t completed his search, and he likes to mingle amongst the locals, observing their pokemon and fishing out any information he can get. He often frequents the daycare since it’s a great place to see pokemon he may not have encountered yet, and he’s since befriended the family that works there, including Kian.

JOEY is a trainer from the Johto region, growing up in Olivine City with his mother and sister. He was always in love with the sea, the ships, and the Glitter Lighthouse. But despite that love, he still yearned to see what was beyond the sea, to be one of the many that came and left on the boats entering the port. The furthest he got was Kanto, but even still, it wasn’t enough.
His first pokemon was a Mareep he accidentally encountered on Route 42 while he was out with his mother. Being 6, Joey was a bit more scared of the pokemon than the Mareep was of him, but remembering his dream of being a trainer, he steeled his resolve and let the pokeball go. Sapphire, his first friend of many, now an Ampharos that keeps Joey in line. Over time, he acquired a funny little Phanpy that would become his Donphan (Baylor), a shy Swinub that’s now a Piloswine (Honey), a Vibrava (Calliope), and a Cubone (Knox).
The true start of his journey began when his sister became a new researcher for the Devon Corporation in Hoenn. Knowing fully well of her brother’s need to leave Johto, she invited him to join her as she continued her research on fossils and rock-type pokemon. It was through her research on fossils that he gained a Cranidos named Pippa. Now, Joey and his sister stay in Ambrette Town at Hotel Ambrette while his sister works at the Fossil Lab. Joey’s days have been filled with sights and pokemon he’s never seen before, and he can often be found wandering through the Kalos region, stars still in his eyes and his pokemon by his side.

AFTERNOON REPOSE / Main Pokemon Verse
Kian, Cass, and Joey!!
idk how to organize my verses yet when everyone’s stories intertwine, so bear with me!! since I’ve got so many muses, I’m breaking all the info up, starting with these 3!!

» Tørsvall Harbour Map «
Updated Oct 2021
New update to the map of Tørsvall’s main town! I thought it hadn’t changed that much, but comparing this picture to my last one, it’s actually expanded quite a lot! 🤗
Two quick things - I put 3a instead of 4 because I have a horrible OCD fear of the number 4 😅. Also because I am ~extra~ the compass at the top left actually points to the north (given sunrise and sunset positions)
Below the cut I’ll put a list of all the lots! I’ll include a link to lots that I’ve already showcased, and put lot names in italics if I haven’t decided on a name for it yet :)
1. Tørsvall Emergency Services (Fire Station) 2. Arctic Circle Ice Cream 3. Porta Vista Italian Restaurant 3a. Pippa’s Pet Supplies 5. Fjellfolket Adventure Gear (General Store) 6. Bank Nordik (Business Rabbithole) 7. The Mermaid’s Closet (Consignment Store) 8. Tørsvall Post Office  9. Ferry and Bus Terminal (Subway Station) 10. Eide’s Kafe
11. Mystic Minerals (Gypsy Wagon) 12. Tørsvall Radio 96.5 FM (Journalism Rabbithole) 13. Ljúft Laundromat 14. Tørsvall Gallery of Art 15. Alda’s Art Studio  (Uni Art Rabbithole) 16. Bergrå Books (Bookstore) 17. Vítavörður Guesthouse (Base Camp) 18. The Pink Fiskur (Food Truck) 19. Tørsvall Lighthouse 20. Hreppin Bait and Tackle (Port)

Onesies
Pairing: LMM x Reader
Warnings: Slightly NSFW (boobs!), Alcohol.
Notes: A dear friend told me onesies were sexy. I disputed this fact and then tried to write about it and dammit she was right and I was wrong. If you like it, please leave a note or reblog, it means so much.
Words: Oh, far too many.
***************************************************************
Jasmine: Tomorrow night, my place, movie night. Bring your onesie and sleep over.
Daveed: Onesies? Sleepover? Jazzy we’re grownups you know
Jasmine: SO THE HOT CHOCOLATE WILL HAVE BRANDY IN IT.
You think for all of three seconds.
Y/N: IN
Lin: And I!
Pippa: I have spare onesies if anyone needs one?
Y/N: Can I just wear my pjs? Onesies are always about a foot too long for me lol
Jasmine: Of course. All you regular-sized people have to wear one though.
Y/N: Rude. I’ll bring brownies.
Oak: I heard brownies. In.
Daveed: I’ll bring the brandy.
******************************
“Jazzy, It’s Y/N...I gotta tell you about last night...”
“Last one here?”, Lin asked as you pulled your coat around you at the back door. “Oh, yeah I had argument with one of the pulleys”, you grumble. Lin laughs “Did you win?”, he asks as he opens the door and holds it for you. “Yeah but it made for a damn long day with no breaks”, you say as you emerge into the crisp night air. He stops on the top step “Oh no! You didn’t get any dinner?”, he asks, looking genuinely concerned. You shrug in response. “Alright I’m going to get you some kind of food, right now. Pizza!”, he decides. “Lin, you don’t need to buy me dinner.”, you smile. “What if I already wanted to and this is just a convenient turn of events?” he says, face suddenly serious and soft.
Shocked, it takes you a second to respond. “Well, then I’m glad I argued with the pulley”, you respond. He grins and holds out a hand to help you down the steps. You take it, and he doesn’t let go once you’re on the sidewalk. He pulls you to the crosswalk “Come on, I know a place”.
****************************************
An hour later you leave the pizza place, having long outstayed your welcome. Lin takes your hand again as you giggle about the staff all staring you down til you left. He insists on walking you to your subway.
“Here I am”, you say, indicating your station. Lin stops just short of the entrance and says “This was fun, do you think I could take you out properly, maybe Monday? Maybe at a more reasonable hour for the serving staff involved?”, he grins. This whole thing has been so surreal-was Lin Miranda really asking you out?
“You‘re asking me on a date?”, you can’t keep a grin from your face. “Yeah...I like you”, Lin says. Oh my god. Oh my GOD. Be. Cool. “I think I like you too.”, you say and move a little closer to him, one hand on his coat. He reaches for you, his hands coming to rest on your hips. You feel your stomach do some kind of somersault when his gaze flits to your lips.
You raise up on your toes to press your lips to his. It’s quick, chaste, full of uncertainty. You look at him, wonder if that was a huge mistake. He gives the tiniest smile before he dips his head to kiss you. Really kiss you. Your hand goes to his neck as his tongue runs against your bottom lip and you open your mouth to him. My god he’s an excellent kisser. Why is it so late, why are you stuck at a subway entrance? Why aren’t you somewhere warm and cosy that you can just do this for...oh, hours.
But, you’re not. And someone jostles you and tuts as they push past to get to the stairs. It’s a rude end to a beautiful kiss but it makes you both laugh. “Text me when you’re home?”, Lin says with a smile, arms still around you. You nod and he kisses your forehead. “G’night, Lin”.
*****************************************
A sleepover. What a ridiculous idea. What a brilliant idea. You’ve planned getting to Jasmine’s early so you can properly catch her up on yesterday and so you can change into your pjs before anybody else gets there. You place the last of the brownies into boxes and pack them into your bag. You check the time and head off for the subway.
You’re the first to arrive and Jas is already looking glorious in a unicorn onesie. “Jas, how the hell do you make that look sexy?”, you ask. She shrugs as she dances around the kitchen. “Brownies?”, she asks over her shoulder. You pull out the boxes and open them up. “These are plain, these are peanut butter cup”, you gesture. “Peanut butter cup? What the fuck. That sounds delicious!”, she says as she starts to arrange them on plates.
You follow Jasmine’s instructions for making the base batch of hot chocolate and then help her set up the fixings on the counter- marshmallows, sprinkles, whipped cream, fudge and caramel sauces-all while you get her up to date on Lin.
Just as you finish Pippa buzzes at the door. When she comes in she’s laden down with bags. “I brought a lot of onesies!”, she laughs as she hugs Jasmine. “Y/N I think I have one that will fit you...”, she says playfully. “Is it a child’s?”, you deadpan, causing both girls to laugh. She hands you one and you head off to Jasmine’s bedroom to try it on.
When you pull it out it’s a cat, kind of. It has pointy ears and a face on the hood but no tail. You roll your eyes but strip off your outfit to try it anyway. It is a little long in the leg but it has cuffs so you’re not going to trip over it. It’s a little close fitting but still comfortable. You fasten the last popper and head out to show the girls.
“Hey,” you call as you come through the door, looking down at your new feline outfit “are you supposed to just wear your underwear under one of these things or what? Cos I feel kinda nake...”. You stop dead in your tracks, verbally and physically as the first face you see is Lin’s. He must have arrived while you were in there.
You blush a ridiculous shade of pink and mutter “Oh god.” as Jas and Pippa double over with laughter. Lin comes to your rescue “All I know is”, he looks you up and down “you’re wearing it right.”. He offers you a grin and a wink and you feel slightly less mortified.
“You’re...a ninja turtle, ha!”, you observe. “I mean technically they’re pjs but I have the matching hat so...”, he says as he strikes a pose.
It’s at that moment that everyone else seems to arrive in one noisy bundle of nightwear. Oak, Daveed and Anthony all have their onesies on already and strut their stuff through Jasmine’s living room like it’s a catwalk. “Daveed, is that a llama?”, you ask, head cocked to one side to try and figure it out. Daveed sighs and you sense this isn’t the first time he’s had to explain: “It is a SHEEP.”. His tone is so indignant that you all have to stifle laughs. “And you are wearing... a cat?”, he questions. You pull up your hood and answer, “I think so-hood suggests yes, but”, you turn around and point to your butt “no tail!”. Daveed smirks a little and says quietly “Looks just fine to me”, as he brushes past you to place a bottle of brandy next to the hot chocolate. You blush and busy yourself with sorting out some cups.
Jasmine appears at your side and whispers “Lin’s face when Daveed said that...”. You whip your head around but by now he’s talking to Pippa. Jasmine offers round mugs and tells everyone to come and get their fixings. Daveed places himself in charge of brandy and Pippa grabs the whipped cream as Anthony and Jasmine fight over sprinkles. Daveed approaches and offers you the brandy so you hold out your mug Lin walks up as Daveed begins to pour a generous measure and says “Woah! You trying to get our girl drunk, Diggs?” as he places an arm around your shoulder. Daveed looks from you, to Lin and the arm on your shoulder and does the requisite maths. “Nah man, nah. You want some?” he asks. Lin declines and you thank Daveed as he moves on. When he’s out of earshot you turn to Lin and whisper “Were you jealous?!”, amused and disbelieving. Lin scrunches his face as he removes his hat. “Eh, maybe?”, he groans. You shake your head with a smile and squeeze his hand.
Jasmine hollers for everyone to pick the first movie and you move to join everyone in front of the tv. Except there’s only one chair left. “We can squish.”, says Lin and leads you over to the group by your hand. You notice Oak notice the handholding, and everyone notices when lin sits in the chair and motions for you to sit on his lap or squish in beside him. You perch on the arm of the chair, feet in his lap and curled against the wall and the back of the chair. You sip your boozy hot chocolate while everyone else argues about which movie to pick.
They settle on a horror movie. Normally you’d not be especially keen but you’re far too distracted to even pay much attention. Firstly, you’re having to watch the position of your feet carefully since they’re dangerously close to Lin’s crotch. You’re also aware that Pippa is trying to subtly check you two out, looking for signs of romance presumably. You’re careful to stay perched in your corner but as the movie starts and Jasmine turns out the lights, Lin’s hand moves up to rest on your thigh.
When the big jump scares come, you grab his hand and he squeezes it, looking up at you to make sure you’re ok. Daveed and Oak keep a commentary going, calling out the unrealistic effects and corny dialogue. Jasmine shushes them each time. Pippa just quietly watches, eyes flitting around the room each time it gets scary, checking everyone is ok.
When the movie ends there are mixed reviews-Oak thinks it was passable, the girls liked it, Anthony and Lin thought it was only ok. Jasmine offers round drinks and brings out your brownies (“Damn, I’ve been looking forward to these all day!”, declares Oak). The peanut butter cup ones are demolished even before the next movie is picked-Daveed has two, one after the other and declares you a “goddamn culinary ARTIST”. Lin concurs and Pippa can’t talk because her mouth is full.
It’s decided that the next movie needs to be a little lighter since it’s getting closer to bedtime and Jasmine says she doesn’t want everyone having nightmares. A mild comedy is chosen and everyone settles in-Daveed is stretched out on his side across Jasmine’s rug, Anthony and Jasmine are cuddled on one sofa and Oak and Pippa are at opposite ends of the other small sofa, Pippa’s feet tucked under her.
It’s literally only about ten minutes before Oak’s head has lolled back and he’s gently snoring. You giggle quietly as Pippa mimes poking him and you wave at her to leave him alone. Daveed is next, you notice his head slowly descend into his arm and you signal to Jasmine, who leans over and confirms with a grin and a nod that he’s gone. It’s at this point Lin wraps his arms around you and gently pulls you down from the chair arm to sit on his lap. You’re a tiny bit embarrassed at the public affection but Jasmine is already aware of your kiss and that means Anthony is too, and Pippa has been assessing the situation all night, so you relax into Lin’s body. He’s warm and comforting and you wonder if you might be next to succumb to sleep. Then you hear Pippa snoring softly. Jasmine rolls her eyes and gets up to get a throw from the back of your chair. She unfolds it over Pippa and tenderly moves her hair away from her face. Then she returns to you and whispers “Watch to the end if you like, we’re turning in. You guys can take the guest room at the end of the hall-there are extra blankets in the closet”. She kisses your cheek and whispers goodnight to Lin, then leads Anthony to her room. You honestly hadn’t thought about sleeping arrangements being anything other than everybody camping out on the floor-and now you’re presented with the option of trying to sleep in an armchair or sharing a bed with Lin. It’s a little weird.
You turn around slightly to face Lin. “You wanna watch the end of this?”, you ask-kind of hoping he says no. He shakes his head so you stand and, picking your way around Daveed, find the remote and turn the tv off. Then you beckon to Lin to follow you, since you’ve stayed at Jasmine’s place before and you’re guessing he hasn’t.
You walk out of the living room and to the far end of the hallway. You feel your way to the lamp at the side of the bed and switch it on-it’s dim but at least neither of you will trip over. Lin closes the door and stands beside you kind of awkwardly, looking at the bed. “Uhh, I didn’t know what the sleeping arrangements were...”, you clarify. “No, no-me neither”, he says.
He turns towards you. “I could go back to the chair”, he offers, gesturing back towards the door. You shake your head no. Then you sit on the bed and hold a hand out for him to join you. As soon as he’s beside you his lips are on yours. It’s worth having had to wait all day for it. His mouth moves softly against yours and as you bring your hand up to tangle in his hair you open your mouth and press your tongue against his. He’s honestly an incredible kisser, he seems to know just what you need, just when to change the pace. The butterflies in your tummy leap and you know you need more from him this time.
You lean back, pulling him with you so that you’re lying side by side on the bed. He pulls your body slightly closer, his eyes searching yours for a second. “You’ll tell me if something’s not ok?”, he asks. “Lin, I’m a grown woman-believe me, I’ll tell you what I want”, you say as you grab his shirt to pull him back to you.
Lin groans in surprise as you kiss him again, harder now, more demanding. His hands roam down your back and you raise one of your legs to hook over his. He takes the invitation to run a hand over your ass and down your thigh and in return your hands find his waist and slip under the tank top he’s wearing to brush the smooth skin underneath.
He moans into your mouth a little as your hands move over him and that just makes you want to touch and taste more of him. You break the kiss to move your mouth down to his neck, which earns you a gasp, Lin’s grip on your thigh tightening. He instinctively grabs your ass to pull your groin into his, which makes you pull back from his neck-he mistakenly reads this as reluctance and releases his hold on you. “I’m sorry, I just-you’ve had me worked up since I got here and you were talking about whether you were wearing anything under that onesie...”, he half-laughs. “I wasn’t gonna ask you to stop”, you say as you take his hand and bring it up to the front of the onesie. “Find out what’s underneath.”, you say. “Fuck”, he says breathily and stares at you a second before he gently pushes your shoulder so you roll onto your back on the mattress. He leans over you slightly and pops the first two snaps. He kisses the skin at the top of your chest that is now exposed, then kissing your neck, he moves to the next snap. Pop. Pop.
Now two more are undone and when he pushes the fabric aside, you are exposed right down to your waist. He leans back to look at you, he takes in the teal lace of your bra and places a hand across your stomach. He kisses you hungrily now, his desire for you evident. He moves his hand slowly up your body to cup your breast. He strokes his thumb across the lace over your nipple and it hardens in response as you arch your back with pleasure. He moves over you, slipping both hands under the onesie and around your naked waist. His lips follow where his hands have been as he kisses his way across your breasts. He laves his tongue over your lace-covered nipple then
CRASH.
Just outside the door there’s a thud. You both jump away from each other and hear Jasmine emerging from her room. “Oak, are you Ok?”. Oak curses, presumably having tripped, and apologises for waking her. As you and Lin remain completely still and quiet, they laugh and chat for a minute then say goodnight again.
By the time the scene has played out, your moment with Lin has gone. You look at each other and laugh as he rolls to his side of the bed and you pop your onesie back together again. You turn towards him and he holds out his arm for you to cuddle into him. You press a kiss to his lips and say goodnight before you tuck your head against his chest, smiling to yourself. Lin waits until you are asleep before he lets himself start to drift off. He kisses the top of your head and sleepily whispers”Sweet Dreams”.
