i haven't posted in forever; here's some sort of quick and simple study(?) of what i consider the "big 3" macaques (rhesus, pig-tailed & long-tailed)
#i didn't factor in sister/subspecies#very generalized#and they crossbreed like crazy anyways lol#i purchased lynx nature books primate handbook recently and have been into color plates of subfamily species as a result#if you are autistic about monkeys i suggest it its an amazing book. but it is 200 dollars and weighs 15 pounds#im not kidding real life primatologists complain about not being able to bring it to the field because its so heavy

Phentypically, a spaniel isn't even a dog
#bark bark bark#such weird animals#the whole ear thing is wild vs most other dog families#spaniels are actually a subfamily of nubian goat

Do you have any ocs that are tigers? 👀
you know, i actually don’t right now! which is strange, considering they’re probably the most visually striking and memorable big cat around right now.
i had an idea in the works for a silver/grey amur tiger shapeshifter named tatiana, but that concept is so half baked i havent even drawn her yet.
she might be a rival to aster, my amur leopard shapeshifter.
#i also need to make an oc that belongs to the proailurinae subfamily#probably proailurus lemanensis itself just because thats the most well studied one…

shoutout to Feniseca tarquinius for being North America's only butterfly species with carnivorous caterpillars, which sometimes wear the corpses of their prey as camouflage.
the adults don't drink nectar, but do feed on honeydew and drink from mud, dung, and apparently carrion
#thoughts#🍬 post#butterflies#lycaenidae#these guys are a species of harvester and that's the lycaenid subfamily I'm least familiar with but I decided to learn a bit more about the#and apparently they all have carnivorous caterpillars which is really interesting#but this is the only harvester species in North America#also the adults drinking from mud and dung isn't that weird for butterflies. some species will also drink blood if it's readily available#but the fact that it doesn't drink nectar is unusual and I'm fascinated by it just not feeding on plants#oh also the caterpillars only have 4 instars instead of 5 and basically speedrun the larval stage by the sound of it#I can already tell this is gonna be one of my blorbo species just because it's such a little weirdo#I need to start learning to ID harvesters I guess

btw the answer to if clouded leopards are big cats or little cats depends on how inclusive you believe the term “big cat” to be so uh. dealer’s choice i’m sure they don’t mind either way

i want to learn so many languages but french is miles easier than any other language i've looked at... rip
#french is incredibly similar to english#despite the different language subfamilies (italic vs germanic)#neither has case except in pronouns; both are analytical; they share an enormous amount of vocab#their tense systems are very similar and a lot of the phonology is either shared or very easy to learn#(sorry about the dental fricatives french people)#then you look at like. welsh (little vocabulary in common and a handful of very uncommon phonemes)#or even german (CASES) & yeah. cases

Misleading names image is from here:
I have just learned that Mountain Goats are NOT, in fact, actual Goats.
#we love you mountain chicken#also mountain goats are *related* to goats in that they're in the same family (bovidae) and subfamily (caprinae)#(sheep are also in caprinae)#but all goats are in the genus capra and mountain goats are in the genus oreamnos‚ which is on a different branch within caprinae#i guess that branch is sometimes referred to as 'goat-antelopes'#so yeah they're not true goats but they're in the same subfamily#taxonomy#mountain goats#animals#art#that art is super cute

Representative of genus Arborvitis, known as species Arborvitis vespertilio, common name bat dragon.
#genus - tree-climber (the arboreal true dragons)#species - bat-like tree-climber (the bat dragon)#got inspired earlier#god. I love science#dragons#mythology#I’m thinking there are two subfamilies under family Dragonidae#one consists of dragons who have completely lost their bristles/hairs/whatever im gonna call em#and the other has the bristles as well as lobed ears#the latter subfamily are the only dragons that have lobed ears (save for one species under the other subfamily)#wing prints

Pill Scarab Beetles: these beetles are covered in plates that perfectly interlock when the beetle folds its limbs, lowers its head, and curls itself into a ball

Above: Eusphaeropeltis sp. (top/bottom left) and Ceratocanthus aeneus (bottom right), two different species of pill scarab beetle
Beetles of the Ceratocanthinae subfamily (also known as pill scarab beetles) rely on a unique form of conglobation to conceal themselves. As the beetle tucks its head down and folds its legs up against its belly, the plates on its head, thorax, abdomen, and legs all come together to form a solid shield; the plates on its legs even have grooves and corresponding ridges that allow them to neatly interlock.

As this blog post explains:
Adult Ceratocanthinae are best known for their ability to conglobate: rolling into a nearly perfect ball. The elytra, pronotum, head, and all six tibiae interlock with each other by means of grooves and corresponding ridges, forming a tightly connected external surface. Many beetles take the form of a tight compact structure when threatened, however in Ceratocanthinae the tibiae of all six legs participate in forming the external hard surface of the sphere, unlike in other beetles.

Above: Ceratocanthus sp.
The Ceratocanthinae subfamily contains many different genera/species, and they are all collectively known as pill scarabs. Many of them have a colorful, metallic appearance; they may be green, red, blue, brown, black, or multicolor.

Above: Germarostes globosus

When you have to delete a whole post bc you accidentally included misinfo in the tags bc tumblr dot com won’t let you take out the tags and re-save the post without them
#I accidentally said that most of the afroeurasian vultures were in subfamily Gypaetinae and referred to the cinereous vulture as a member…#…of said subfamily#but I was wrong#most afroeurasian vultures are in Aegypiinae including the cinereous vulture#Gypaetinae has the bearded vulture and Egyptian vulture plus a few other species not typically called vultures#so yeah I messed up sorry guys#I got the two names mixed up in my head and I should have checked before I posted
