BONUS: I had to cut this from my last post, but here, have Spidey calling Namor “cutes” and “babe.” I think that calling people pet names is just a Spidey quirk that some writers latch onto more than others, but I’m rotating these in my head all the same.

I forgot (if i ever really knew, honestly) that atlantis was originally in antarctica. But I'm assuming it was set there in the original 40s comics? Either way, it's nice that we get a history lesson on atlantis (particularly because i didn't know any of this). And now i understand why namor's mom died: the surface dwellers inadvertently killed her. (Tales to Astonish #96):

Sub-Mariner #38-40: Dorma Aftermath (feat. Spider-Man)
This is an odd handful of issues, and I had an odd time reading them. Pardon me while I break from my usual format and shove all my thoughts into one very long post.
Believe it or not, Spider-Man lurks beneath this readmore. It’s the first time Namor and Spidey have crossed over in one of their mainline books (not counting Marvel Team Up), and surprise! I had a lot to say about it.
Sub-Mariner #38 is a “special origin issue” that switches between recapping Namor’s past and scenes of Namor grieving and attending Dorma’s funeral in the present. It ends with Namor abdicating the throne of Atlantis and heading for parts unknown (but implied to be the surface world).

It’s a weird time to be doing a flashback episode, but maybe they’re treating the death of Dorma like a “season finale” of sorts. It makes sense to catch new readers up before bringing them in on the ground floor of a new batch of stories, but I wish it had been fully focused on Dorma and the consequences of her death.
Sub-Mariner #39 seems to support the “new season” idea, with Namor moving to the surface in the most Namor way possible: isolating himself on an abandoned prison island within shouting distance of New York and using his bare hands to carve it into an extremely conspicuous vacation palace overnight.

Naturally, the US Navy ends up detonating the whole island rather than let Namor stay there. Even though he publicly announced that his only goal was getting over the murder of his wife, AND he offered to pay for his use of the abandoned structures.

I read both issues in a sort of fugue state. The story was progressing very logically from one beat to the next, but to me it somehow felt completely unmoored from reality at the same time. It’s like both Namor and the narrative were going through the motions of what should happen next in the Adventures of the Sub-Mariner, and his misery was a foregone conclusion.
Speaking of things being unmoored from reality, Sub-Mariner #40 starts and HOLY SHIT IT’S SPIDER-MAN

Full disclosure, if I wasn’t both a Spider-Man fan AND in a weird place emotionally after Dorma dying, I might not have liked this issue. Normally this alone would’ve been enough to draw my ire:

Especially since the recap explains almost nothing. Meaning that if I hadn’t had the means to read Daredevil #77, I would have no clue why Spider-Man, a character Namor has not met once in this series, is here.
So to recap, an extremely simplified version of Daredevil #77: A meteor lands in Manhattan, and Daredevil, Spider-Man, and Namor show up to investigate. They all start fighting over a misunderstanding, as is custom. Then the wand-wielding woman emerges from the meteor and abducts Namor (the person she was here for) and Spider-Man (she just liked the cut of his jib).
I feel like the writers were cooking a little by bringing these three together, as they’re all at emotional low points in their stories after the death of or separation from someone close to them (in Spidey’s case, both). But there’s a real missed opportunity here: the person Peter just lost is Captain Stacy, and Gwen Stacy’s death happens just two years after this! It wouldn’t really work for the role Spidey has to play in Sub-Mariner #40, but now I wish we could’ve seen Namor and Peter commiserating over their respective partners being murdered by a green-skinned lunatic with a grudge against them. Weird that it’s happened twice, right?
The plot of #40 is…a lot, exposition-wise, and that’s not really what I want to focus on. So to summarize again: Wand Lady is the princess of a kingdom of telepaths, and she picked up Namor to fight off a buff, psychic madman who wants to marry her and take over.
But like I said, what I ACTUALLY want to focus on is my two favorite characters being forced to spend time together. Starting with Spider-Man ACTUALLY STANDING UP FOR NAMOR!

This was so refreshing! Usually when Namor is called upon as the Prince of Atlantis to undertake some kind of dangerous quest, there’s no one around to question it or ask what he wants…except maybe Dorma, and she’s gone now. In addition to being a good old fashioned “Peter treating superhumans like people” moment, I think it was really important for Namor, who’s recently taken a serious dive into self-loathing, to have someone treat him like a person with autonomy who’s feelings matter—even if it’s someone he doesn’t know that well, and even though he decided to help the princess out anyway.

Namor is acting weirdly sedate in this issue, and it’s hard not to read it as him being depressed. What I like is that while Spidey is WIGGING OUT about being abducted and tries to spur Namor into action, he doesn’t necessarily get angry at Namor for not doing anything about it. He mostly seems concerned that Namor is acting so out of character.

I like to think that even though Namor isn’t very forthcoming about exactly what’s going through his head, Peter can tell and is trying to be supportive without prying or being patronizing. After all, he’s just suffered a traumatic loss of his own, one that he also blames himself for.

All in all, this is just…not what I expected from a Sub-Mariner and Spider-Man crossover. In a good way! Weirdly enough, I think Peter is kind of the perfect person to tag along with Namor right now. Peter can be rash and has a habit of jumping to conclusions, sure. But he’s kind and empathetic to his core, he’s more of a lighthearted character than Namor is on principle, and in this issue it seems like Peter understands what Namor needs from him in a way only another recently bereaved person can.
The sad part is that it seems like Namor appreciates this…but it can’t last, because Spidey has three other mags to star in Namor has to continue on his quest to find his father (who Diane Arliss revealed might be alive at the end of #39).

I really wonder what could have been if Namor had stuck around New York a little longer. Forged a deeper friendship with a surface dwelling hero who can relate to some of what he’s been through, and who’s come to trust and accept him based on his actions, not his power or heritage. If Namor had been around for the death of Gwen Stacy and helped Spidey through that, while also getting a new perspective on Dorma’s demise. Perhaps Namor would end up being kinder to himself about the whole thing if he saw a friend going through something so eerily similar.
I think this bizarre little diversion was exactly what I needed to get back on track with the main story. These two are a strange matchup, but it’s honestly just fun to watch them exist around each other and read Peter’s snappy dialogue bouncing off of Namor’s Fire Emblem speak. Really hoping they team up again at some point, but not holding my breath!

Qwilfish & Overqwil
Qwilfish (#211)
Tetradontas agrestas maritimas ([OG] Qwilfish) Tetradontas agrestas venemas ([H] Qwilfish)
General Information: Qwilfish the Pufferfish Pokémon. These angry spikeballs will swallow up to 3 gallons of water in order to rapidly inflate themselves to intimidate foes and fire off spikes. During this moment after they fire their venomous spikes, is when a Qwilfish is left defenseless, and is the best time to strike.
Qwilfish have two sub-species: the (OG) Qwilfish, which is a water and poison type, and the (H) Qwilfish, which is a dark and poison type. Both sub-species weigh in at an average of 8.6 pounds (1.9 kg) and are about 1’8 feet long. Importantly, only the (H) Qwilfish is capable of evolving into Overqwil.
Habitat: Qwilfish are marine organisms with a wide tolerance of marine habitats, but generally prefer cooler waters than warmer ones. (OG) Qwilfish even tolerate brackish waters! (OG) Qwilfish are more tolerant of warmer waters, while (H) Qwilfish strongly prefer colder waters, but both have overlapping ranges.
Life Cycles: Qwilfish are overwhelmingly pelagic creatures, spending much of their lives in the open ocean, but can be found at reefs up and down the latitudes. They are born in clutches of 20-40 eggs at a time every few months, which are laid inside nests made by the father. In absence of a father to protect and care for them, the eggs will just be laid in the open ocean, where they will float on the surface of the water. In colder, more-oxygen rich regions of the ocean, there are more frequent clutches. These extremely tiny eggs, about the size of a fingernail, hatch a week after being laid. The resulting babies are roughly the size of a one finger bone, whom must learn to survive in a harsh environment that sees them as bite-sized snacks—however, the father makes an earnest effort to defend them, even if most still end up consumed by the dangers of the ocean. The baby Qwilfish continue to grow until it reaches its maximum size at around level 25, but is reproductively mature starting at level 15. Bigger Qwilfish are considered more attractive mates because they are tough enough to survive to reach such sizes, and males are known to compete with each other by puffing up really big. Females may also establish social dominance amongst themselves through the same tactic: puffing up really big.
Once a Qwilfish gets bigger, they become harder and harder to eat. A fully-grown Qwilfish has few predators due to their highly effectively venomous spike-missiles. This does not deter a hungry Sharpedo.
Behavior: Qwilfish are just angry little spikeballs. They are quick to inhale water and puff themselves up in order to fire venomous missiles. (OG) Qwilfish are more likely to be solitary creatures or form smaller colonies, while (H) Qwilfish are most commonly found in large colonies often called “mines”—a reference to naval mines, an explosive used in warfare. On teams, Qwilfish are known to be a bit aggressive toward other Pokémon, but are often nothing more than the Team Grumpy-Butt.
Male Qwilfish are known to build well-structured nests for their mate’s eggs. These structures are often re-used by other organisms, and are a key part of reshaping underwater environments.
Diet: Qwilfish love to eat shellfish! Oysters, clams, shrimp, tiny crabs, you name it! They love to use their beaks to crack open their shells and devour the delicious insides.
Conservation: Least Concern
Relationship with Humans: Qwilfish are eaten by some cultures in Eastern Asia, considered a delicacy that requires extreme skill and precision to detoxify. Otherwise, (H) Qwilfish in particular are considered a nuisance to fishermen, and in wartime have been utilized as mines.
Classification: The genus name is “Tetradontas”, a reference to the clade for pufferfish, blowfish, porcupinefish, etc.
Overqwil (#904)
Tetradontas venenagiganticas
General Information: Overqwil the Pufferfish Pokémon, this overgrown angry spikeball is all but a really really big Qwilfish. Their spikes are able to react to threats even while the Pokémon sleeps. These barbs are notoriously difficult to remove and leave a lasting pain for days.
Overqwil averages at 8’2 feet (2.5 M) long, and weigh about 133.4 pounds (60.5 kg).
Habitat: Overqwil, like it’s pre-evolution (H) Qwilfish, prefer colder regions of the world.
Life Cycles: An (H) Qwilfish is only able to evolve into an Overqwil if it has mastered the attack Barb Barrage. Because most Qwilfish, regardless of sub-species, are only capable of learning Barb Barrage after they have reached their full adult size, this means that an Overqwil must intrinsically be a Qwilfish that’s seen a couple years. Lacking the naivete and inexperience of youth, an Overqwil has the wisdom and intelligence to appreciate its massive size and power boost. These gains are used to defend it babies, its mate, and its friends from foes, as well as to win over the affection of prospect mates.
Overqwil are known to live upwards of 30 years.
Behavior: Overqwil are extremely aggressive Pokémon with a short temper. These Pokémon have no qualms with picking fights or trying to bite off more than it can chew, literally or metaphorically. They are highly effective at defending clutches and newborn Qwilfish from predators.
Diet: Overqwil eat poison-type Pokémon preferentially, especially Mareanies, whose hard protective shells are shattered by the Overqwil’s beak. While they do still eat shellfish and have the means to do so with their beaks and powerful barbs, this species has specialized in a niche not already filled by Qwilfish, allowing the two to co-exist.
Conservation: Least Concern
Relationship with Humans: Overqwil are seen as pest-control for marine poison-type Pokémon, but because (H) Qwilfish are themselves considered a pest to many, an Overqwil’s usefulness as pest management is minimized. However, their powerful love of Mareanies earns them a foundational role in the preservation of Corsola populations.
Many marine Pokémon Rangers have an Overqwil as a valued member of their team, capable of packing powerful punches against major oceanic threats.
Classification: The species epithet of Overqwil is “venenagiganticas”, which in combination with its genus name roughly means, “giant venomous pufferfish.”
Evolution: Overqwil evolve from (H) Qwilfish when it has mastered the move Barb Barrage.

“The Fantastic Four” (1961, issue 4)
At the end of the previous volume, the Torch ran off because he was fed up with the Thing shitting on him.
Spelling it thru is certainly a choice, and one I’ve decided to stick with for the remainder of this blog. Flashback panels having a wavy border to distinguish them is a nice touch. And is that… a primordial ad for the Hulk? I wonder what that could be?
There it is on the next page! What could they be talking about!?
Trans pride flag!Sue Storm forgets to relax her invisibility while searching for Johnny, causing another ghost scare. Starting to enjoy how this is just a consistent thing she does. The best pranksters succeed without even trying, truly.
So everybody knows this guy is the Torch, by the way. And he flames on in front of people he knows, so he knows they know. "Save this for future reference."
The Hulk - I mean the Thing - can have a little angst, as a treat. This one feels a little forced though.
I’m given to understand that Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner predates the Marvel Comics label, having been published in the 40s back when they were called Timely Comics. It’s funny to see Johnny read one of their own comics approximately twenty feet away from a guy who is totally not Namor, no way, jeez what even was on the cover of this issue ha ha
Wow, would you lookit that, that’d be Namor right on cue! Wait. Wait a gods-damned second. He can’t be.
He can’t be! But he is--! Are… are D&D elves aesthetically inspired by Namor? Or is that just a shared old-style idea of “inhuman beauty”, the high pronounced eyebrows and sharp, lengthy cheekbones? Or is it just that picture of Mialee in the Player’s Handbook that incidentally looks similar? Probably a mix of options 2 and 3. Namor turns out to be tough as nails, and elves in the earlier editions of D&D, well they certainly ain’t.
Meanwhile I really like this. Tons of people who still have no idea about capes, and so think they’re a hoax or fiction that’s been put in the wrong section of the library.
Sue does not know her own brother’s voice - you heard it here first. Johnny demonstrates for the first time his ability to reflexively “flame off” parts of his body that come into contact with others; we already saw him do a partial transformation when doing welding.
Namor meanwhile realizes that his undersea kingdom was demolished by an atomic weapons test (!!!!!!!) and he decides to defeat the surface world in retaliation. Also he’s kinda hunky : )
He unleashes “Giganto”, a mega-sized mix of whale and primate, to terrorize New York and it wrecks thru buildings once it makes landfall. Kind of surprised to see so much mass demolition this early into the comics. Anyways the Thing just requisitions a nuke (something the F4 can do, I guess), plunges into the beast, sets it off inside and makes it out safe. Namor beats all of them physically, but is obviously vanquished at the end. There is a notable moment in that fight, though, where when Namor spots Sue for the first time, he declaims that should she marry him, his feud w the surface world would be over. Gross!
This isn’t a bad issue. Namor’s fun cameo and promise to return set up a wider world, and he’s less one-dimensional than any of the villains so far. The Thing and Torch continue to provide the only real character of the quartet, though. The other two need to step up at some point.
#hrm liveblog#the fantastic four#marvel comics#superfluous atomic weaponry: 2->3#I am serious about saving “people know who the Torch is” for future reference#Namor : ) ) ) ) ) ))))) ) ) )#cover scene almost happens so I'm not gonna say it doesn't#Atlanteans count as a new alien species right? i think one of the most fascinating thing with comics is how they kind of will make light of things a long time after they happen even if at the time, they're treated super seriously. like take the fact ive seen this exact joke in the 60s-70s marvel comics despite well, the 40s comics around when pearl harbor happened were over the top demonizing japan. and it kind of makes me wonder how this specific instance from 2 different authors came about given both of them were alive when it happened?
[ID: A comic panel from Sub-Mariner #35 where the Silver Surfer is hovering above Iron Man. The Silver Surfer says "And so it begins anew! The mindless anger - the lashing out rather than the reasoning together!" and Iron Man replies "We'll reason together with you, surger- when we're sure you won't pearl our harbor! Now just hold still a minute-!" /end ID]
#twist rambles#like its baffling cause marvel esp (idk on dc bc i havent read their wwii propaganda comics as much as marvels) was like so much worse to#imperial japanese army vs the nazis? so it feels so flippant in a really odd way. the other time it was clint just saying that but that guy#loves to say odd and weird stuff so it wasnt as shocking as fucking. i.ron man???

hello :) i have very recently gotten into namor comics and i wanted to know, what are your favorite arcs/solos hes had? i hope its not too much of a bother. thank you and i hope youre doing well. ^_^
Hello and welcome. It's always a pleasure to speak with Namor fans ❤️ Thanks for asking, I'm well and I hope you are too.
Series:
King in Black: Namor - It's wonderfully written and gives us great lore and character moments. It's written by Kurt Busiek who really knows the character. The artwork is amazing, drawn by two different artists but I have to point out how much I really enjoy the colorists' work. The way they chose to make present day Namor scenes all muted colors, like the ocean is sick and dying, meanwhile his past scenes has such vibrant color.
Sub-Mariner: The Depths - I'm a big horror fan so this was a perfect combination of horror and Namor. I wish this would someday be adapted into a short animation or live action film. Ribic's art carries the whole comic, you could understand it just by the art alone, tho the writing is great too.
Sub-Mariner (2007) - Honesty I feel this series is criminally under rated, it's one of my favorite modern takes on Namor. I do have a couple of criticisms of the plot/ending but overall this series is favorite, love the artwork, love the premise and Namor's characterization.
The Sub-Mariner (1968) - I'm a big fan of Silver Age Namor and this series has lots of great comics but some do drag on at point. Personal favorites, Namor vs The Thing and Namor meeting Betty again in #8, Dorma being possessed by the Serpent Crown in #9. Gonna stop there before I go digging to find every issue I loved, bc there's just a lot there, like I love Tigershark's introduction/stories and Namor and Diane's friendship, and the quest for Namor's father etc.
Arc's:
Tales to Astonish: The Quest for Neptune's Trident #70-76. (To be fair I do love a lot Tales to Astonish but I'm just trying to pick out arcs that I reread alot.)
Namor goes insane in space: Uncanny X-Men (1963) Annual 3 (2001), Steve Rogers: Super Soldier Annual 1, Namor: The First Mutant Annual 1
Suma-Ket & Artys-Gran Arc - Namor, the Sub-Mariner (1990) #30-40. Dark Undersea High Fantasy arc, love it.
Solo Comics:
Marvel Fanfare (1982) #16 & 43, both these are solo adventures
Marvel Snapshot: Sub-Mariner (2020) - I can never get enough of this comic, told from Betty's pov, its wonderful.
Avengers: Emperor Doom - I love every time Namor and Doom team up or interact but if I had to pick one time it's this.
What if? Sub-Mariner (2011) - Love love this story by Greg Pak of Namor growing up on land.
The Judgement of Namor - Dark Reign: The Cabal - Namor takes court and deals with his subjects. An excellent look into Namor's role as the monarch of Atlantis.
Marvel (2020) #3 - I loved the sketch arts of the comic that was unfinished, it had been around for decades but when Marvel finally printed it in full I was so happy. I still prefer the sketchy art but I thought this was a fun adventure and Namor is in a suit, lol.
Marvel Comics Presents: (1988) #33 - All time favorite Namor comic, #1 spot in my heart. (2007) #7 - Namor mourns Nita's death (2019) #1 - A heavy story by Greg Pak about WWll
Tales of the Marvels: Inner Demons - a look at Namor while he was an amnesiac
I haven't even started on character team up comics or team books and if I start on those I won't stop. lol. I'll put a link here to my 2019 comic reading guide that can help you find most major arcs. I hope you enjoy reading!
