Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English

Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies. I've hit the link limit on this post so I've had to remove NovelUpdate links, but they're still in the version of this post on Wordpress. Note that Taiwanese titles are not included on this list.

This is everything I know of as of October 24, 2024. There might be more. I tried. Resources used to compile this list: Danmeinews.com; this Carrd, last updated in March 2023; this other carrd last updated October 23 2024; list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates; a similar list on Goodreads; danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.

Seven Seas:

These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats. Seven Seas translation quality varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).

Rosmei licenses are Singapore distribution rights only. There is a list of international partners organizing group orders here. I've personally placed my orders through Yiggybean, as discussed in reply to this ask. Most of these titles are only being released as print editions, tho titles that weren't originally on JJWXC (of which there are several here) WILL have e-book editions. My first book from Rosmei arrived, and I found the translation and editing to be very strong. I can't speak to how accurate it may be to the Chinese original, but it read smoothly and had very few errors. Overall, though they've made some mistakes, they've been communicative and responsive.

In my opinion, Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable, and I'm excited that they're working with translators such as E. Danglars. C-Novels Available in English Translation

A few weeks ago, a few of my danmei-loving friends and I got to talking about how much there is that we want to read, but that none of us have been very organized about keeping track of titles, fantranslation links, etc.

So, we decided to make a spreadsheet.

AND to combine every link we'd each separately stashed around on that spreadsheet.

The result is a list of 102 titles (currently 96 are danmei, 5 are baihe, and 1 is gen, reflecting our personal interests/preferences) with links to translations, some complete, some not. (as of 2/20/23)

Some notes:

This is specifically for English translations from Chinese titles. Though some of the links do include other works (for example, some translators also do Japanese, and some Carrds list fantranslations in multiple languages), we're English speakers who are interested in Chinese novels, so we focused on that.

Currently, this is mostly basic information (titles, authors, links), with no summaries, genre tags, etc. We hope to ultimately expand it but that will be a lot of work and the information is already available at the provided NovelUpdates links, so we encourage you to use those.

We make no claims that this list is exhaustive; while the first sheet lists the resources we had collectively already gathered, there's a second sheet with things we know of and intend to add.

We'll try to keep links and such up-to-date but if you spot a problem please let me know!

Known official translations are listed. We will not link fantranslations for titles that are out officially in English. Don't send them. Don't ask for them. We won't help you pirate these titles.

(ADDED): I have also now added carrds for works that I could find carrds for, and added a third sheet, with carrds for authors. (I looked for every title and author and added the ones I could locate; Google asked if I was a bot at least 6 times lmao). Carrds are often good for summaries, information about the characters, and especially trigger warnings, so they're worth checking out! I realize I haven't posted in a while

I'm enjoying this "Yue Qingyuan sent Shang Qinghua to go spy on Luo Binghe after Shen Qingqiu's death" AU, because I love it when background characters have their own goals and business, are fighting with each other, and are doing wild shit on purpose. Even if you're doing an AU (as per canon to our knowledge) where Shang Qinghua is not a double agent - and is just fleeing to the Demon Realm because he was found out as a traitor and/or decided that it was time to dip because the protagonist and Cang Qiong Mountain Sect are now in semi-open conflict - the question remains for exploration:

Why did Yue Qingyuan not go to Huan Hua Palace and try to kick Luo Binghe's ass to get Shen Qingqiu's body back?

It's suggested at several points that Tianlang-Jun at the height of his power was stronger than Luo Binghe, and Yue Qingyuan was part of the team that helped to seal Tianlang-Jun. Shen Yuan suggests that the original Luo Binghe had to bait Yue Qingyuan into a death trap of ten thousand arrows because Bing-ge (even with the Xin Mo Sword at this point) didn't want to face Yue Qingyuan head-on. (I think Bing-ge sent SQQ's legs to YQY or something.) Yue Qingyuan is willing to draw Xuan Su for SQQ and Liu Qingge is willing to help (although LQG might be mad that YQY let SQQ go to the Water Prison at all). YQY versus LBH is not a totally unbalanced fight.

It's possible that Yue Qingyuan didn't go fight because he kind of shut down due to grief. Shen Qingqiu has changed in recent years and died in a very sudden, very shocking, very confusing way. YQY also has a sect to look after and maybe he can't fully justify going out and escalating the conflict over a dead body (as opposed to a live hostage), and possibly get himself killed, when he's maybe hoping that Cang Qiong and Huan Hua can settle this without further death. The other peak lords all must have opinions on this and are probably pulling him in all sorts of directions. By Liu Qingge's account, Yue Qingyuan probably knows that Shen Qingqiu intentionally died for Luo Binghe and he knows that SQQ loved his disciple, so maybe he wants to respect SQQ's sacrifice and affection by not trying to kill Luo Binghe. When Luo Binghe invades Cang Qiong for SQQ's body (and Shen Yuan), Yue Qingyuan has to dangerously abort cultivation in the Ling Xi Caves to come face him, so it's possible that YQY had decided 5 years in that peaceful resolution was impossible and was gearing up to fight Luo Binghe, only to be a victim of bad timing (Liu Qingge's unexpected success in body retrieval).

It could be a combination of these reasonings! People do things for lots of different reasons and this is an emotionally charged situation which puts Yue Qingyuan in a complicated political position.

So, yeah, it could also be that Mu Qingfang came back from his kidnapping saying, "Luo Binghe was repairing Shen Qingqiu's body, trying to summon his soul, and was researching resurrection techniques when I was there," and Yue Qingyuan decided to just... sit back and see where that went. If Liu Qingge (who is probably NOT happy that YQY isn't throwing down already) succeeds in retrieving the body, fine, that's good enough, but if Luo Binghe succeeds in bringing Shen Qingqiu back...? Well, that's also good, isn't it? Yue Qingyuan can outsource the "go mad with grief and engage in crimes against the natural order" to someone else here.

I mean, I really don't think that Yue Qingyuan was actively PLANNING for Luo Binghe to resurrect Shen Qingqiu. That seems a little too wicked and scheming to be his main motivation here. But I do think he might have been... vaguely aware of this potential consequence of his inaction, this possible side effect of his paralyzing grief causing him to be hands-off about the situation and/or his cautious approach to peace negotiations, and I really don't think that he minds that Tianlang-Jun and Zhuzhi-Lang succeeded in bringing Shen Qingqiu back. (I do think he kind of wishes that the Shen Jiu who remembers him had come back instead, though.)

Xi Song barked a laugh. “Yeah, Professor He has some tattoo, I think it was done by Professor Hua. You think they’re friends?” “I think they’re lovers,” Su Yan grinned. “You read too many yaoi novels,” Xi Song grumbled.

He Xuan, Hua Cheng, and Mu Qing are all professors at Puqi University. On top of that, they're married. No one knows (or so they think).

Puqi used to be a small farming village. Now, it housed one of the most prestigious universities. Students had to go through rigorous entrance exams, and teachers were hand picked, the finest in their field.

Hua Cheng, also known as Crimson Rain Sought Flower. He rose in the underground art scene, renown for his carvings and paintings. His art could sell for thousands of dollars, and yet he remained hidden beneath a red shroud of anonymity. That was until he made an announcement he would start teaching at the University of Puqi. From then on, students flocked to his class to glimpse even a shred of the famous one eyed artist.

Mu Qing, a poor child from the slums of Xianle, graduated at the top of his class due to his mathematical prowess. He was an uplifting story for news sites to spread. Eventually settling to teach at the University of Puqi, he was the teacher students who were “at-risk” were shoved too. However, he was one of the strictest, with the highest fail rate in the department of mathematics.

He Xuan, one of the lowest profile professors. He came from a long line of engineers, but his father’s company fell when he was only a child. Not only that, there had been a cheating scandal a couple years back involving him. The administrators who gave the gaokao had swapped his results with other student’s, resulting in false scores. But it was a quiet case, only coming to light because of the attempts to keep it behind the curtain. Known for appearing during class and disappearing right after, students rarely turn to him for help. But at the end of his semester, he always got good evaluations. He was revered as one of the fastest professors to get tenured.

Mu Qing had his computer set up with slides on the board, but was scribbling away on the whiteboard. His students stared in wonder.

“What are you gaping for? Take notes, I won’t go over it a third time,” he snapped. His students bowed their heads and scribbled messy notes.

All of a sudden, a loud ping! rang through the class.

“Who’s phone is that?” Mu Qing demanded. He held a very strict no phone rule in his class — any student stupid enough to get caught would get a firm, public, lecture.

Three more dings filled the classroom, before a student gathered enough courage to mutter, “Sir…it’s your computer…”

Mu Qing turned around to see four new text messages, displayed for all to see on the whiteboard.

“Oh.” He said.

But his face grew red when he realized who it was from.

The class was silent. Student’s eyes darted around, wondering if they should make a run for it or stay still. Mu Qing finally shattered the quiet glass.

“I want to see a proof for Brun's theorem by next class. If you can’t finish it, turn in what you did, or drop my class.” With that, Mu Qing disconnected and shut his computer. His ears were tinged red with embarrassment, but no one would dare point that out.

The second he dismissed class, he could hear the rumor mill kick into overdrive. He was the professor that kept his personal life hidden, going to great lengths to separate the two. He had constructed many shields, many walls, to keep them from ever mixing. And now they were crumbling before his very eyes, mixing the toxic chemicals. Before he knew it, it would explode and his reputation would be tarnished.

Mu Qing overreacted to even the smallest things. He’d complained last week about Hua Cheng texting, but both He Xuan and Hua Cheng laughed. Sure, Mu Qing didn’t speak to them for six hours, but how was it Hua Cheng’s fault? Mu Qing was the one who not only synced his messages to his computer and turned notifications on, but forgot to turn it off before class.

“Hong’er, what are you working on?” Mu Qing asked.

Hua Cheng looked up from his canvas, “Oh, nothing big. I just wanted to do a small painting.”

The “small” painting was currently black with blue undertones, lines of gold running through like lighting. In the center, thin white lines cracked through. The rolling, deep, blues were reminiscent of the ocean, evoking a feeling of drowning peacefully beneath the waves. Hua Cheng, satisfied with his work, finally set his brush down.

“You’re not going to believe this,” He Xuan snorted as he walked into the room. He flopped onto the couch.

Hua Cheng’s art room wasn’t by any means small. It provided enough room for him to work on multiple projects at once, and still have both his lovers accompany him.

“What is it?” Hua Cheng asked.

“Check your instagram. The comments are going wild,” He Xuan said. He stifled a laugh as Hua Cheng wiped his hands off and grabbed his phone.

“What exactly am I looking for?”

“Just check the comments on your latest post.”

Hua Cheng’s brow furrowed. That was, until he followed He Xuans’s instructions. His eyebrows shot up.

“Whoops,” was all Hua Cheng said.

You see, after his first week of teaching, his students had tracked down all his socials. It was a tradition for the newbies to scavenge the internet to find where he posted his art. This also meant he had to be careful what he posted – but only on his art account. God knows what was on his private twitter.

He’d posted a photo of his new sculpture a couple days ago, it wasn’t his best work. It had been of Mu Qing and He Xuan, even if Mu Qing claimed it didn’t look like him.

Clearly, his students noticed.

Hey, isn’t that Professor He? Yeah, the other guys looks like Professor Mu! I didn’t know they were friends If you look through CRSF’s past art, it shows the two of them a lot 👀

“That doesn’t look like me at all!” Mu Qing exclaimed. He must’ve opened the comments as well.

“A-yin, clearly they think it does,” He Xuan remarked. He patted the top of Mu Qing’s head in sarcastic sympathy.

“Well, I don’t think so,” Mu Qing grumbled. Hua Cheng sat down on the couch next to him, and went to pull Mu Qing over.

“Ew! No, your hands are covered in paint.” Mu Qing jolted away. He Xuan laughed as Hua Cheng looked down, defeated. Getting up to wash his hands, he glanced over at his phone. It’ll be fine, people will just think they’re friends.

He Xuan stood at the front of the class. It was a small class, so he forced everyone to the front.

“I want you to discuss how decisions – or lack of – affect Hamlet’s fate. Arrange your desks into a circle. You’ll be graded on both contributions and listening.” With that, he stepped back and let his students do the work.

The season’s had begun to change. The air was growing warmer and more humid. He rolled his sleeves up to his elbows, and turned the fans up. His students huffed as it began to blow the pages around, but otherwise silently thanked him.

As their discussion began to come to a close, He Xuan shut his notebook. The students turned at the sudden loud noise.

“Professor He, what does your tattoo say?” Ahhh crap.

“It’s just a saying.” Lies, all lies. But that would have to do.

A butterfly was perched on a long sword, with the characters 红 (hōng, red) and 银 (yín, silver) scrawled in calligraphy around it. Hua Cheng had done it for him.

One student frowned. “It doesn’t-”

“Isn’t that Professor Hua’s handwriting?” God dammit, why did his students have to be so perceptive?!

“I-”

“Yeah, it’s his art style too. See?” One student had pulled up Hua Cheng’s twitter and was showing it to the class. She turned her phone to face He Xuan. He pinched the bridge of his nose.

“I’m fully aware of who he is, yes.”

His students stared up at him expectiantly. Well then.

“I want an essay on what you just discussed, due next thursday. If you have any further questions, feel free to come to office hours.” He Xuan uttered nothing else, but grabbed his bag and left the classroom.

Qi Bei banged her head on the table. Professor Mu had been pissed and assigned the class extra work. It wasn’t even their fault!

“What’s wrong?” Xi Song asked. Su Yan looked up from her textbook at her friend’s chatter.

“Professor Mu accidentally projected his text messages on the board, and then got mad at us! We didn’t do anything!” Qi Bei exclaimed. She threw her hands in the air in defeat.

“What, was it some raunchy drama?” Xi Song asked.

“Not even, just “Hong’er” and “A-Hei” asking if anyone fed the cat,” Qi Bei wrinkled her nose.

“Oh, that reminds me. Did you see Professor Hua’s insta? Look!” Su Yan pulled up the comments of one of his posts. It was filled with chatter about Professor Mu and Professor He.

Xi Song barked a laugh. “Yeah, Professor He has some tattoo, I think it was done by Professor Hua. You think they’re friends?”

“I think they’re lovers,” Su Yan grinned.

“You read too many yaoi novels,” Xi Song grumbled.

Xi Song knocked on Professor He’s office door. This essay was going to kill her.

The sign on his door said he was available, and she’d emailed ahead of time. Knocking again, Xi Song began to grow impatient.

“Professor He?” She said as she pushed the door open.

Oh. She was going to have to pay Su Yan so much.

Professor Hua was sprawled on a couch, with Professor He leaning against him. Professor Mu was lying across their laps.

“Hello,” Xi Song’s professor said. His face was just as expressive as a stone.

Xi Song watched as Professor Mu bolted upright. “It’s! I-”

Professor Hua just laughed.

“I thought you said no one was coming today!” Professor Mu turned to Professor He.

“I said no one usually does.”

Professor Hua peeled himself off the couch. He pulled Professor Mu up with him, and dragged them out the door.

“Goodbye!” he said, his one eye shining with what could only be described as mischief.

Once the door shut behind Xi Song, she turned to Professor He.

“So. Is it true you’re married?”

Professor He shrugged and moved to his desk. “Yeah. What do you need help with?”

Xi Song plopped into the chair across from him. “Ok, so…”

This is gonna seem so random but I think we’re all looking for a little escapism today. I see you’ve read Golden Stage! As someone very new to danmei…any recs for similar stories? I guess I mostly mean danmei but with a solid plot outside of the romance. Sadly I’ve already read all MXTX’s stuff.

*waves* HELLO ANON. YES. I am happy to discuss this topic or literally ANYTHING that isn't *gestures vaguely*.

I've read a fair amount of danmei, and I really liked Golden Stage. What I personally loved about Golden Stage was the politicking, which is something I enjoy tons in most books, and that plus the romance really made the book for me. If you're similar - which it sounds like you are! - here are some titles I've read that spring to mind:

Thousand Autumns by Meng Xi Shi (officially licensed, all volumes out): a wuxia novel about an evil sect leader, Yan Wushi, and the fallen leader of a noble, upright daoist sect, Shen Qiao. The politicking is complex and excellent, and it's most definitely romance-lite. Yan Wushi is a horribly wonderful little gremlin of a man, and Shen Qiao is in my top three fave danmei characters with Chu Wanning and Xie Lian, for an idea of the kind of person he is. Highly recommend.

The Fourteenth Year of Chenghua by Meng Xi Shi (unlicensed; I read the Chichi translation, tho there are some issues with it). Intensely political historical fiction about a low-level but capable administrator during the Ming Dynasty, facing up against the corrupt court of the Emperor and the Emperor's favorite concubine, with the help of a morally upright military officer. It's also romance-lite. Heavy politics/romance-lite is kinda Meng Xi Shi's...thing. The show "The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty is loosely based on this book.

Those Years in Quest of Honor Mine by Man Man He Qi Duo (unlicensed; the fantranslation has unfortunately been deleted, though at least some of it is still on the Wayback machine): a historical-esque (but not set in a specific time period) story about a disgraced former top-exam-scorer who returns to the capital out of necessity to help his charges, and his encounters with his former...crush? ...captor? ...it's complicated... who is now the most feared right-arm of the Emperor. I'd say, of all the titles on this list, this is the one most similar to Golden Stage in terms of the balance between the politics and the romance.

The Imperial Uncle by Da Feng Gua Guo (officially licensed, only one volume long): the uncle of the Emperor has a reputation for scheming that he, himself, thinks is entirely unwarranted. This book is first person, and Prince Huai is a delightfully unreliable narrator. The romance includes some misdirection (I'd consider who he ends up with to be a spoiler) but I really enjoyed this historical-esque political drama.

Copper Coins by Mu Su Li (recently licensed by 7s! will start coming out late next year): wuxia historical/fantasy China setting, about a celestial dragon who was gravely injured and is now trying to get healthy again and also figure out who hurt him, and the stolid monk who very begrudgingly starts helping him. This one is less political but has a similar mystery vibe, and the main ship are a lot of fun; their dynamic is similar to Wangxian.

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.

A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.

what's your ranking of danmei novels you've read so far? i'd love to know your favorites!

I don’t really like rankings, so please don’t take my words as a strict top or something

In short, my favorites are: Qiang Jin jiu, Can Ci Pin, Lie Huo Jiao Chou, Mo Du, close seconds are Zhen Hun and Sha Po Lang — I re-read all of them once a year or so

In length, from Priest I’ve also read Faraway Wanderers, Lord Seventh, Liu Yao, Jinse; I would say Priest is my favorite author, looking forward to read more (all) of her novels

I’ve read MXTX, of course: I love Tian Guan Ci Fu; I’m okay with Mo Dao Zu Shi, I’m neutral to Svsss

From T97 I’ve read only Qjj, but I’m planning to read Nan Chan one day

This is going to come up in "Some Unknown Corner", but I don't know how explicitly it'll come up, like, terminology-wise, so... saying it more explicitly here if you want to try and look out for this detail in coming chapters. Minor spoilers for a character issue that will become a later plot point.

I'm going to try to explore Yue Qingyuan having claustrophobia, specifically a fear of being shut in underground spaces in particular. This man has wild amounts of willpower and will generally refuse to be vulnerable, so he does NOT let on to this fact in obvious ways, even when forced to be underground temporarily, but he HATES the experience. On the edge of a panic attack, feeling like he's dying, still smiling pleasantly somehow.

Yue Qi goes back into the Ling Xi Caves with Shen Jiu as disciples in one of the Qijiu extras. In this case, I think he was a little fearful (not irrationally, honestly) of something bad happening to Shen Jiu, so he forced himself to be there despite the fact that he hated being there the entire time. (My general headcanon is that Yue Qi genuinely doesn't remember huge chunks of his confinement due to the trauma of it all.) By the time he's the sect leader, over ten years later, he's calmed down enough to let Shen Yuan go in there alone to cultivate. (Maybe Shen Qingqiu threw him out another time later down the line as disciples.)

In SVSSS, Yue Qingyuan goes into the Ling Xi Caves again, I believe, in order to get stronger and potentially get Shen Qingqiu's body back from Luo Binghe. When Luo Binghe invades Cang Qiong, Yue Qingyuan has apparently hastily had to exit seclusion at a delicate time. Was he trying to heal the Xuan Su sword issue as much as possible? Are visits to the Ling Xi Caves a regular medical treatment for him? Why didn't he go into the Ling Xi Caves to get stronger / potentially heal his broken relationship with his sword any earlier? I'm imagining Yue Qingyuan honestly having to force himself to go cultivate alone through a fairly serious phobia, and Mu Qingfang being generally against it, because it seems more like Yue Qingyuan might accidentally work himself up into a terrified, traumatized episode of some kind and die due to another qi deviation.

Being at Mai Gu Ridge sucked for many reasons. It sucked for everyone, really.

Yes, Yue Qi having claustrophobia does make his being blinded in "Some Unknown Corner" worse. (He's holding steady (barely) based on being able hear other people around him + smells + Shen Jiu's touch.) He's really not having a fun time! He's a practical guy and he really doesn't like panicking, so he is SHOVING IT OUT OF MIND, which is not great. I already view Yue Qi as disabled in SVSSS canon due to the Xuan Su sword issue, and the story keeps putting him in positions (sect leader) where he cannot "afford" to be disabled (he has to try to save everyone else), and it is continuously fucking him up. He needs some real rest so, SO badly.
