Su Yin, I swear! It was definitely my last time thinking about him!

You know I was just writing about the contrast between Su Yin and Huaien

And I had a thought.

Xiaobao gifts Huaien with an hair piece that matches the one he's always wearing, explaining they're a set that he's reserved for the love of his life.

And I couldn't help but think how much that single hairpiece tells about Xiaobao and who he loves.

Because, while it does look good on Huaien, the nature of it being an hair ribbon means that it cannot really work with a tight bun.

Like, for example, the type of hairdo Su Yin wears.

And the thing is, this show has been doing quite a lot of storytelling and characterization through clothing and hair.

For example, Su Yin, Prince Shen, the Emperor, and most of the characters from the Imperial Court wear tight buns and have all their hair in an hairdo of some sort, because that's what is proper and they are serious people.

Notably, the only character of this side that escape this is Shaoyu, who is a volatile little gremlin who doesn't understand any of the weight that comes with the power he carries, let alone what property means.

On the other hand, Huaien, his not-father, and both of Huaien's men wear part of their hair down and flowing. Because they are rebels and free spirits who don't follow rules, and in both Huaien's and his not-father's cases, pretty volatile. (i'm simplifying here, but you get what i mean)

Xiaobao wears his hair partly down too, and he too is free-spirited, and doesn't understand responsibilities, and just want to live his life happy with his family without a care in the world.

And Xiaobao had this hairpiece made that kinda only work with loose hair. And a point could be made that it was meant for a woman, because it was, but you'll note that Xiaobao's mother always wear her hair up (I'm not counting Xiaoyu because she's a child, and the rest of the other female characters we see only in passing) so it's not a question of gender.

And I just- it already says so much about what kind of person Xiaobao was waiting for. He wants someone to have fun with, someone to build a family with, someone to share a happy life without much care for the responsibilities of the world.

And that someone could have never been Su Yin. Even if he hadn't been forced to take on an older brother role, he's still too serious for Xiaobao, and too weighted down by responsibilities that would never suit Xiaobao. Huaien or not, it could have never been Su Yin.

Xiaobao may have a -5 IQ most of the time, but his EQ…

No platitudes. No fake apologies or promises. No blame or “well, you shouldn’t have.”

This is the most mature form of acknowledgement. He knows that Su Yin is upset in part because of his actions, and that it’s a kind of pain that stems from a deep well of caring about Xiaobao’s well-being. He knows that Su Yin is exhausted after getting him back on his feet and, based on his comment about Xiaobao hating him, probably not too certain of where they stand.

And he doesn’t try to brush it off or explain it away, nor does he try to pretend it didn’t happen. He just goes straight to his Xiaobao brand of honesty—he doesn’t know how to make it better, and that opens exactly the door they need to walk through.

This is why everyone revolves around Xiaobao like Prince Shen complains. He’s just so good and genuine that nobody can really hate him. Except Shaoyu, but he hates everyone except Su Yin, so he doesn’t count.

Appreciation Post: Jin Xiaobao + Cozy Robes

Bonus: Jin Xiaobao and his Harem of Protectors

This is my favorite of Xiaobao's looks so far. He's not even wearing his own clothes, these robes were given to him by Su Yin and they still match his theme but in a calmer combination. There's less of that teal color and more cream and metallic sage green and since the gold is mostly in his clothing and not adornments it feels less harsh. But we still get that teal color cascading around him from the canopy above him. Framing him, making him look royal.

The gold heavy outer robe makes Xiaobao look like a cute little prince and it pairs well with his secret couple's item. He looks effortlessly put together despite him falling to pieces inside. He says he hates Huai'en but continues to wear the piece atop his head. He doesn't even know that Huai'en kept it but it doesn't matter, it's something that he and Huai'en shared...even if it was in a small moment.

His body language is drawn in. He's more observant and less talkative. He's become reserved to keep control of the mask he set in place to fool his parents so they won't know how severely ill he is. The mask also fools his friends so they won't see how hurt he truly is. The mask covers up the fact that he thinks about Huai'en nonstop and he feels a mix-bag of emotions about the man he gave his heart to.

1. fumbled the clifftop scene. where were the thousands of armies vying for the blossom

2. terrible at securing his own house. huaien just sneaks in all the time

3. apparently broke ??? relies on the jin family for funding his community service soup kitchen

4. couldn’t even kill huaien when he had the chance. wimped out at the last minute

conclusion: tbd. probably he has a good heart but a soft heart does not a good royal make
