The Watermelon

"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!"

Okay, that's all fine and good. Everyone is taught what to do with a rogue lemon. But life doesn't give out just lemons.

So what the heck are you supposed to do when life throws you a watermelon?

BOOM! There you are, holding a watermelon you don't have time or energy for. Everyone tells you to just drop it and move on, but you're worried it might explode, leaving you with stains that won't come out. Or worse, hurt the people around you.

So you just keep holding it. Oh look, there's some people. Quick, smile!

Should you complain about it? Make frenemies with it? Or stop moving all together? No matter what you do, people don't like it. Some sigh and tell you, "It's your fault for picking it up!" But you didn't. It just landed in your lap. Stupid life.

There are a few wonderful people who walk next to you. They can't hold the watermelon for you, but they put an arm around you while you carry it and steady you when the weight becomes crushing. It's hard to speak while you're straining under the watermelon, so you can't always tell them that what they do helps. But the little things they do make a world of difference.

Some people simply can't see the watermelon and get confused by the change in your voice. You look the exact same to them, after all. You keep smiling. Still others make detours around you when they see what you're carrying. Did I mention that those few wonderful people mean the world?

The day should be coming when I wake up and the watermelon isn't there. It's rolled off to a dusty corner, nestled beside the other skeletons in my closet, calmly waiting for when life decides to throw it at me again.

But for now, it will be out of sight. Then I can thank those few wonderful people who are still there. Sometimes, my watermelon is all the world sees, but those few wonderful people? They still talk to me, whether they can see me or not.

I know my voice gets muffled. I know it's hard to see my face. I can't even begin to tell you how hard it is just to breathe. All my energy goes into smiling.

Please understand that I didn't choose this watermelon, and I know you didn't choose yours. But life threw them at us, and it's not socially acceptable to make watermelon juice.
