my take on benophie kids
charles eunchan baek-bridgerton
or who sophie would call 백은찬 (baek eunchan) if he gets into trouble
which is unlikely because charles is a total sweetheart whose favourite person on earth is eomma (sophie)
charles would buy sophie flowers on mothers day and help her with chores (a total gentleman)
excels in everything including sports and school
favourite sibling would definitely be violet
alexander eunwoo baek-bridgerton
what ben calls a 'lady's man'
besties with the (female) bridgerton cousins because he's a charmer
would give sophie and his aunts lots of compliments (and he means every single one of the compliments)
somewhat a soft soul that finds comfort from eomma's hugs whenever he's down
william eunho baek-bridgerton
chaotic
used to be the baby of the fam until violent was born
ben gets tired trying to keep up with his energy
sophie gets her patience and parenting tested all the time yet can't help but give in whenever will goes 'sorry eomma'
favourite uncle is colin because they get into trouble tgt (which gets them into trouble with sophie and penelope)
violet eunsol baek-bridgerton
a total mini-sophie in terms of looks and character
rules over her oppas (older brothers) and has ben in her palm although her favourite oppa is charles
everyone in the bridgerton family calls her princess violet
half-princess half warrior girl
ben swears that he'll cry if violet gets a boyfriend
sophie enjoys running around with violet in the garden

So yesterday, I binged Love in the big city. I had read the book, and as I am wont to do, i skimmed through to get back to the episodes and really sit down and watch them later (hopefully in small increments over the next two weeks).
I have been scrolling around on twitter since then (as one does, I am sick in bed with nothing to do but an assignment I don't have the brain power for right now) and really made me think.
First, I looked at international fans' reactions in English e.g. a gay guy I follow who parties a lot and talks openly about his sex life said it felt real, another guy kept complaining about Go Young's taste in men but also the people who watched it for the romance and only focused on that (and the sex scenes, which have racked up 100.000s of views). Some excitedly writing about how handsome the actors were, how they wanted to see a second season, a shame about this or that plot point (the "endgame" not being there). And as @lurkingshan said, it is NOT a romance drama or even a BL drama. This is a chronicle of one's man's life and his trauma, his relationships and his triumphs.
A lot of English-writing commentors praise the actors for their bravery. And that is always the debate, isn't it? Without them taking the role, this thing might not have been made. But the people behind it, who wrote, filmed, assisted, the writer who is a gay man himself, they all had such high stakes too, even higher (the author kept urging people on twitter to give the drama high views, one of the actors offered free hugs and an eating live stream if they managed to trend at no. 1). The drama is a depiction of a queer person's life as it could happen. Taking on this role, playing the part and then leaving it behind, is that as brave as people who live this life every day? Not to say that none of the actors in this production could be queer, bc some probably are.
One of the people i follow on twitter pointed out this feels like the drama shows queer sex, not sensationalised sex, just, that sex is a part of life so it is depicted in a series that is about life. With reading that, I began to wonder what queer koreans were saying about the series. Thanking the fact that google translate has not yet dropped their support of X, formerly twitter, I began by searching up Nam Yoon Su's name in Korean. A lot of people were calling him handsome, saying they cried about his performance. And then I stumbled upon several things:
1. The club scenes/music they used seems outdated to some Korean queers. They wrote that this feels more like a man in his 30s reminiscing his 20s than someone actually in their 20s, which, fair, the drama is told over the span of like 10 years I believe. Also the commentors thought the dancing was bad. But they said, even if some of it felt not true to gay life/the actors couldn't completely sell it as believable, that the drama was important and shouldn't be criticised too harshly.
2. They were having a linguistic debate about the usage of Korean gay slang (i think it was the word 기갈, but I could be wrong bc my Korean vocabulary is like 30 words) and that it has come into vogue with straight girls who go to gay bars, as Mi Ae does in the drama. In a way, it is a risk bringing a subculture that is/was quite closed to the mainstream (I think similar critiques have been made about drag race).
3. That the drama was not reaching its intended audience (queers) and was instead something for straight BL fans to screech over. It does feel kind of weird that something that veers more into raw territory (if you disregard the casting of Nam Yoon Su, who is super pretty and not at all like Young was described in the book), is treated the same as the stylised/trope-ified human experiences we see in some BLs (nothing wrong with those! Media is in its essence always a distillation of an experience),
I think that there is always a risk of depicting something that is close to the way actual individuals experience it and running into voyeuristic territory, on display for millions of people. Is it weird to want people to take this more seriously? To look at it in depth, treat the characters like humans that could actually be living out there and not Ken dolls you can mash together? Or is that too reductive of me, dictating what other people's experience with media should look like?
These are just my initial thoughts, I need to ruminate on them more, and I could be completely wrong about all of this.
I myself rarely go outside and have not had many queer IRL friends, which is why I am drawn to these series. To be honest, I don't even know the local queer slang bc I have been to the queer bar here once before it closed down due to internal disputes. Reading Love in the big city made me feel like i was hit with a sledgehammer, the series makes me want to go out and live again (once I am feeling up to it).

a mindset that helped me a quite a bit in the past and still presently whenever studying a language gets really difficult or overwhelming or you feel like you are making no progress/not retaining anything or that its all pointless is that 1, there is literally nothing wrong with slowly learning a language. and more importantly, 2, sometimes shit needs time to sink in! i remember finishing korean 101 feeling genuinely like i had learned basically nothing and still struggled with the most easy concepts but! when 102 came along suddenly focusing on new material made me realize that the old stuff became intuitive! and that same pattern happens over and over, where a concept seems so awkward and complicated and impossible to grasp and then a few months later while focusing on an entirely different concept i realize the old confusing things are somehow now the 'easy' part that comes naturally! so i guess basically what im saying is i learned to MOVE ON! let yourself zoom out from this one little piece of the language and see the pieces surrounding it and overlapping with it! if a lesson was hard, good! it should have been! you probably wont feel confident in it during or even right after! but the work and energy you put into it isnt a waste just cuz it doesnt immediately pay off, sometimes you have to look away and just move on and trust that the knowledge will settle itself comfortably into your brain while you work on other things, especially if you keep reinforcing it here and there. consistent work will never be a waste even if you dont get immediate payoff. and one day youll wonder when the hell you got so quick at reading or when you memorized a rule or when you learned something you literally were never taught but just observed with your own intuition. so much of language learning is trusting yourself, and trusting this invisible force and process of learning thats bigger than you. it isnt all up to conscious studying and conscious effort and learning, you also need to give yourself time to unconsciously internalize things. and that takes much much longer than a week-long grammar lesson!!

The Sua comic is so good it scratches the right cortical regions.
The remains of dead children are akin to snow -a hallmark of winter- to insinuate the cessation of existence. If Sua's sister is to be taken at face value, it is a ritual restricted to children. Mixing their remains in the grass they once walked on, in the only place that offers the vestiges of humanity as a bargain to elicit their most beautiful cries, is horrid.
Equating ashes with snow is such a twisted play on the connotation of purity the latter carries. But also, the remains are scattered under the starry night sky, as if to symbolise the glimmer of hope fading away. Or it could be seen as going back to the abode in the sky where God would have lived had they not been forgotten.
Anakt Garden represents a one-way trip to the afterlife, which is why Sua's sister references it as "hell", because it is frightening. She still has her instincts intact and fears death unlike those who grew up in the garden. However, Sua finds reprieve in this afterlife, morphing into a "heavenly garden", because she was found by Mizi, her delight, her enticing "paradise". In the end, she becomes a perfect victim of the system that ensnares all.
The entire world is built on a travesty of concepts as we know them, deprived of their most raw characteristics. Everyone has to return to the Great Anakt; ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

yeah, the language learning process is.... going, for sure. I'm reading Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir in four languages.
I finished the English version a while ago but I just couldn't stop re-reading it so I went "might as well" and got the other language versions.
挽救计划 is the simplified character version of mandarin chinese and I'm making a huge progress. I mean I didn't know I could read that well in Chinese? I think I can finally get into Three Body Problem. Anyway, I've been reading and highlighting new vocabularies that I can understand from context but haven't encountered before. And then I just write them down in a vocabulary list while watching tv or something else.
極限返航 is the taiwanese madarin version and 프로젝트 헤일 메리 is the korean version. I haven't made a lot of progress in any of then because I got really into the simplified character version. I also looked for the japanese version but no dice. It's fine though. I'm focusing on Chinese these days anyway.

Sketchpage for THE SINGLE OLDEST OC that I have! This is "Names," nicknamed that because he is 1. immortal 2. able to travel through dimensions, and! 3. a shapeshifter! He has too many goddamn names & identities, and so.
He's a disowned bastard of royalty in his [denounced by himself] homeworld, in his second more loved homeworld he is an absolute scamp of a bastard shapeshifter. he's trying his best whilst also being very vain and annoying. he's reliable friend!! but he will also make fun of you and tease you the entire time! (unfortunately one of his top three love languages is Annoying The Fuck Out Of You) he has so much interdimensional yaoi going on dont EVEN worry about it UGBFSYUDGFUIJH
(and Yes! him being able to travel through dimensions IS a cheat code on my end so i can have One Single OC for oc x canon + the shapeshifter thing is 1. gender 2. excuse to not draw things sometimes 3. excuse to label any random oc for oc x canon things as Names <3 work smarter not harder or whatever now watch me not even do any of that with him lol lmao )

Now, I hate to bring political garbage to my page. I do it oh so sparingly, you know? But this warrants the chatter. I just want you to listen to this man speak about voting. Mainly the first minute of audio. This is a clip taken from The Hill's video stream of former president Donald Trump's speech at the 'The Believer's Summit' (https://www.youtube.com/live/EK-2ciNXBMU?si=D3fKwQ_rWxXtFfEw). I do have captions enabled, but be warned they have a lot of random letters due to Trump's 'unique' speech style.
Also, please note the odd cut at the beginning where Trump's head seems to clip is NOT an edit on my part, and I do not believe it is a cut on The Hill's part either. As the words continue in flow and do not appear edited. Also in that this is a streamed video and is unlikely to have tampering. I believe it may just be a glitch in the stream. That or we fell through a mandala universe in direct sight.
Trump talks about the 'cheating left' and the necessity of christians to vote. People have commented on how he says he is not christian (this does reflect on the captions), but I actually don't think that was intentional on his part. It may be word soup in that after an hour long speech, the sentence didn't form correctly (or dementia episode lol). However, my focus is more on his next few sentences/claims about how this election will remove all need for christians to ever vote again.
I question how this can be interpreted in any way other than 'I am the last vote you'll make.' I see a lot of things the candidates say that can be taken out of context. Yet here I have provided a clip with prior and continued context, as well as the entire video, and yet this doesn't seem interpretable. I can't see the angle where this can be taken out of context. I can't see where it's a joke. I can't see where it means something else. How do you interpret: "Get out there and vote. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years. You know what? It'll be fixed. It'll be fine. You won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful christians.... In four years, you won't have to vote again. We'll have it fixed so good you won't have to vote again."?
You can't. He means every word of it. Even if you pull the angle of 'he'll fix the country so well that its christian core beliefs will be in control and no matter who you vote for, it'll be christian.' It's scummy. It implies heavily that in four years, the need to vote will be unnecessary because no matter how you vote, the set 'correct' person will win. That can't be achieved without voting.
You could suggest he means 'this is the only election that matters and when the next candidacy rolls around the effort is unnecessary but that doesn't make a lot of sense either.
The only way to not make this sound predatory is by suggesting he's just hyping the crowd and doesn't actually mean it... but that can't be it. At least, not to the people who follow Trump like he's the next messiah. Since that would imply cognitive decline. After all, saying he means it harmlessly and doesn't mean to sound so manipulative negates the idea that he's a competent ruler leader.
However you interpret it, whatever you take it to mean, you can't ignore the warning signs.
Doesn't it feel dystopian? This is the behaviour they warn us about. Extreme nationalism. Pushing religious ideology as politics. Placing your leadership on the same pedestal as a god. 'Vote with me to be a hero'.
Its cultism.
Scary shit.

The second end credits. The metaphors. The afterlife. The sea meaning. The CHANGE OF PLAYERS!!!
Everything. This show has ruined me.
After being exhausted with bad finale endings in so many Thai Series last year, this short but mighty Korean BL called "Love for Love's Sake" just came and destroyed me in a few days.
Tumblr media
The writing is just incredible. The themes are realistic and make you think about life. The production is very well-thougtful (come on! So many details are to be pointed out in decorations, dialogues and everything!). The acting is very natural and characters are refreshing and addicting.
I have so many feelings. SO MANY.
Damn, 2024 started so strong for me.
I'm gonna go drown myself in the corner and maybe get to my own happy afterlife
Okay, no, I gotta gather myself and write other several posts about hidden details in each episode. Haaa.
Anyway, 10/10 would recommend to watch for every BL lover or just Kdrama viewer.
How am I supposed to return to work, I have no idea but I'll try. Feel free to rant about this show with me in replies, reblogs or asks %))
Who the hell directed and wrote this show. I'm gonna go and pour some hearts on them.

Because I got sucked into the drama on Twitter, I watched Popstar Academy (would not have otherwise):
First, I hate survival shows. I’m just like keep that stuff within the company and start showing us material once you’ve chosen the people for the group. I know every company goes through that process of selecting people for the debut group but I’m not a fan of seeing it.
Reason I say this is because I understand & get people having star power or certain people always being in the lineup because they fit what the company is looking for. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. In fact I think that’s the industry. But the way this show was formatted and presented to the girls, they went in thinking something else. Which I’m not sure what they were pitched vs if it was naïveté. (Also, it seems like only a small percentage of the girls were actually familiar with or fans of kpop, just an observation).
Having like 8 or so trainees join LATE, and picking trainees that didn’t even have singing or dancing background was certainly a choice. Like the show made the initial training group feel like a pre-training to get the girls where they need to be for the actual training/show. It’s a typical Netflix thing but I feel like some of the later trainees could’ve really benefitted from being there from the start. Especially since the show had some of the girls really starting from ground 1.
It turning into a survival show halfway through was VERY messed up, especially considering how many girls kept asking before they agreed to the program if it would be a survival show. That contract must have either been very vague with the wording or small font or something.
As the program was happening live, I think I only saw the Buttons performance. I wasn’t paying much attention to the program because I wasn’t interested. That said, the survival show didn’t even make sense if it was solely based on the performances & whatever content the girls chose to post on social media. I understand wanting to gauge fan interest in the girls but like idk have test groups? They should know any time there’s fan voting it’s biased as hell. There should always be a percentage taken into account with fan voting vs judge voting. But anyways, what makes this survival show weird is that part of what affects choosing favorites in other survival shows (like p101) is that you get to see the trainees interact with each other. Even though mnet evil edits, you see through the show who has leadership skills, who’s caring, who’s hardworking, who gets along, who’s improved, etc. All of that was missing when the program was live?! (unless I’m wrong) We’re only learning this stuff through the documentary. I’m only using this as an example but the girls were so shocked Manon scored high, but viewers didn’t know about the missed practices & stuff. Had viewers known, would Manon have scored so high? Who knows (she def has it girl + charisma, so very likely, but you see my point)
On Manon, as I alluded to before, I think it def would’ve been better if she were in that starting trainee group. While some things were missed due to covid which is excusable, it seems that other classes/training were missed just because. It has me curious if something serious irl was going on or what the cause was, but I suppose that’s her business. Classes/training are important. Personally, it would affect my choice of a bias if I knew that they skipped a lot and broke rules such as missing curfew a lot. That said, I do appreciate that she does show up & out when the time calls for it. I’m not sure if the girls really did isolate her or if anyone at least made an attempt to check on her. I understand the frustration of someone who consistently breaks the rules not getting penalized in some way. I’m glad Manon held herself accountable and really showed up at the end.
This program being in partnership with Hybe is so…🙃 to me. For example, Bang PD discussing the plateau in trainee growth and urging them to debut faster. Meanwhile Hybe groups are on blast about their short trainee times and the need to develop skills further. We start seeing more & more injuries in the girls and it’s like maybe if they took the time to further their training and learn how to properly do things, the amount of injuries could lessen. And then the emphasis on social media, developing a fandom, and discussing the parasocial relationship — felt very Hybe. Like yes social media skills are needed but the way they discussed creating the fandom was kinda 🙃 to me. Like the fandom is going to form. Those who were less comfortable/confident/familiar with posting on social media were at a disadvantage. And with them suddenly being thrown into a survival show, it’s not like they were prepared to appeal themselves to the public yet. I don’t think it should have been so important for them to necessarily be good at social media yet. That’s something I think could have been saved for the debut group (or maybe if they KNEW from the beginning it’d be a survival show with that type of format, more of the trainees would be those good at social media). But with how this survival show was formatted, social media was the only way to learn anything about their character.

i'm in recovery from a migraine that hit me out of nowhere at work yesterday, so today is officially day 7 as far as I'm concerned 😭 i was able to study korean before it hit, so that was yesterday's accomplishment. I started getting auras too, so I had to skip physics so I could drive home before it got worse and now I have to make up a lab 🫠 better that than a car accident while there was a tornado warning in effect on top of it ig 😭
today i got up at the crack of dawn, helped my boyfriend take his cat to the vet and then spent the morning trying to take it easy. i was able to review my physics notes, and study both korean and chinese today—so all in all a good day for what it's worth!
