Month of Emmet Quick Write #18
Prompt #18: Dance
Emmet has a tendency to lose himself in his work. Especially if that work involves not having to talk in the slightest. And it just so happens that it's maintenance day for a beaten-up train cab.
Read the whole thing below the cut.
Emmet wiped the sweat from his brow, slowly ensuring that the last bolt was firmly in its position before scooting back to admire his handiwork. The entire day had been spent meticulously pouring over a train cab that had been needing service for some time after suffering an onslaught of ice. And by using his work time to fix the cab, Emmet himself felt well-maintained and ship-shape as though having come fresh off the assembly line himself.
Emmet carefully took a step away from the unfinished cab, laying his tools on the detached cloth seat he’d been sitting on as he carefully stepped through the gutted cab and onto the rocky railyard where the sound of gravel and ballast shifting underfoot quickly lifted his mood.
Steam and smoke rose in lazy circles from the Anville Railyard. Other locomotive engineers moved back-and-forth across the semi-noisy yard, hearty conversations filtering through the air as they each lugged their toolbags after them. Each worker would stop and raise a welcoming hand to Emmet as he passed them, tipping their hats but without words. After all, Emmet wasn’t a man for words or small talk; he just needed a break before he got back to work.
In the shade of the engine house, Emmet peeled off his backup cap, leaned against the tin wall, and took a deep drink of water, wiping the excess away with an oil-stained sleeve. Today has been a great day. I have been here for hours maintaining the same car. I am making progress! Emmet moved further back into the recess of the engine house, finding a spare chair to sit in as he took off his stained gloves and checked his Xtransceiver, crossing one leg over another.
A message or two from the group chat he shared with Elesa and Skyla. A note from Ingo about his brother potentially departing from his battling line early to buy some sandwiches from a popular deli spot not too far from Nimbasa City. Emails from his subordinates about new paperwork sent in from the mayor of Nimbasa City. Emmet only rolled his eyes and turned off his Xtransceiver, allowing his gaze to rest on the many disconnected freight cars that littered the rail yard.
Things are finally back in order. And. I am not so stressed anymore. Emmet smiled a bit wider when a familiar pokémon lumbered into the engine house, the amber gems studded along its body glowing as the rock-type pokémon clattered over to Emmet and easily lifted him onto its back.
“Boldore. You are not a chair!” Emmet scolded playfully.
Emmet’s Boldore often remained at the railyard and much like its trainer, would spend almost the entire day staring at the trains and studying them when idle. And Boldore, sensing that its trainer had been taking too long of a break, began stumbling out of the engine house with Emmet atop its back. Emmet only rolled his eyes and leaned back, allowing himself to be carried back to the cab he’d been working on without so much as a fuss.
Working with engines and cabs was mindless. Fun, even. Emmet saw the work not like he saw battling. Battling came down to strategy, luck, and power. But assembly and engineering? Those were based on skill. Intellect. Patterns. Emmet knew every tool that could be used to both deconstruct and reassemble the axle and undercarriage of a Knickerbocker. He knew the blueprints of the wirings of a Juniata like he knew the back of his hands. Emmet had memorized the unique coupling mechanisms of the Saluki and he knew exactly what kind of oil worked best for engines like the Shavano and the Steel King.
Emmet usually performed best without talking. And on his days spent at the railyard, he let his hands do all the talking, the way he could seamlessly work and twist and reach, performing intricate but mindless dances with his hands and fingers as Emmet never faltered or forgot the smallest of screws. Each silencing of a creaky joint through the application of oil was like music to his ears. He counted faraway train whistles and nearly skipped when he heard them, listening idly when new beaten up cabs were dragged in and the pistons of the dragging train surged against the metal of the train tracks, audible for miles around.
Metal clacked. Rocks shifted. Emmet turned, his smile widening as he sighted a familiar Klinklang float over to the door of the cab he was situated in. And then came a familiar man.
“Boss Emmet! It’s time to start wrapping things up!” Emmet paused as a familiar face pokéd into the cab he was working in, the depot agent tipping his oil-stained hat to Emmet as the man took a careful step inside. The man then whistled. “Nice job, boss! At this rate, you’ll have this old cab up and running by next week!”
“Thank you verrry much, Josh!” Emmet grunted as he got to his feet, grimacing upon hearing something in his back give. “...Not a word.”
Depot Agent Josh laughed heartily at the notion, reaching down to grab Emmet by the backstrap of his suspenders. “Not to worry. Your secret’s safe with me, bossman. But really. We should get going.” Josh gestured at a clipboard he’d been carrying under his arm, tapping one chewed-up pen at the clipped paper. “It’s almost midday and we’re supposed to be on the car back to Central Unova no later than noon.”
Emmet nodded, setting one hand delicately upon his Klingklang’s sturdy frame. His pokémon shuddered and whirled, giving a hearty clack before retreating back to its pokéball. “I guess. It is time to report back to Gear Station.”
“Good. Nice to know you’re on board for once. Almost thought you had left already,” Josh commented, patting the excess dust from his stained uniform. “Kept calling and calling for you- no response.”
Emmet paused, cocking his head. “Really? I did not hear you.”
“I know.” Josh shrugged. “You tend to get lost in your work whenever you’re here, boss. It’s like you’re completely deaf to the world whenever you’re working with the cars.” Josh then nudged Emmet with his elbow, grinning mischievously. “I sometimes think you’d rather be here with the broken cars than back at the station.”
“That is… not true.” Emmet crossed his arms and turned up his nose, his eyes crinkling when he noticed Josh struggling to keep pace with him. “I simply enjoy the break.”
“Right, right. Says the man that hums and whistles when he’s elbow-deep in months-old oil.”

Spoilers for Tevinter Nights and today's reveal on upcoming DA4 companions. Educational review of The Wigmaker/Lucanis Dellamorte character.
I'm happy that I called Neve Gallus and Lace Harding as companions in DA4. Neve looks amazing!
Really really wish I'd been wrong about Lucanishit Dellamorte.
The story 'The Wigmaker' in Tevinter Nights of the so called 'mage-killer' (who would actually be Marius or Tessa thank you very much) was one of the most poorly characterized pieces of crap I've ever read in my entire 12 years as an editor.
And trust me, please, when I say I've had to edit some real stinkers.
Agree with me or not, I honestly don't care. I know I'm right. Why?
Because there's science behind what works in writing good characters, good settings, good (insert a part of a story).
Editors like me exist to gently (or sometimes not so gently) smack an author over the head with the 'no, that's a ridiculous idea, perhaps tweak it to this instead' stick. And that character was ridiculous on so many levels.
I've already had people get rudely in my face for sharing a personal (and professional) opinion about Lucanishit today.
Reading is subjective. But what that actually means, is that what I like in a story, and what another person likes in a story will be different.
It's not a statement on professional quality of the story in question. That's a completely different topic.
It's very possible to enjoy a story with bad any of the above. Especially if you love reading and weren't foolish enough to become an editor like me.
Word to the wise, if you love reading? Don't become an editor. You end up developing all these pesky standards and knowledge about how story works (and how it doesn't).
It's even possible to enjoy a story that's poorly written or edited. But that enjoyment, which, yes, is absolutely subjective, is still not the same as whether the character, story, setting, or writing are actually good in the professional sense.
I have several NYT bestselling clients. I've worked in and around trad pub and indie pub for more than a decade. How story works is absolutely one of my AuDHD special interests, and as such, I've studied the nuts and bolts of it like I do any of my special interests. I'm not talking out of my ass here.
The fact is that some things work in writing, and some things don't. Some things work in particular types of stories, and some things don't. It's just the nature of the beast.
Seriously. Without being pissed off at me for disliking a story you may have liked? Think about it and read my professional issues with the character.
Something I feel we, as writers, need to constantly be doing is improving our craft. It always surprises me how many writers just get pissy and attack rather than taking the opportunity to engage in free education.
Because when an experienced professional of any sort breaks something down like this, that's what we're doing. Offering free education. (Tips are very much appreciated.)
This critique is based on the story 'The Wigmaker' in Tevinter Nights where we first meet Lucanis. I really hope the Lucanis we get in game will be different.
In the entirety of the DA series (books, games, comics, everything) have you ever seen an Antivan Crow act like such a chuny, emo edgelord? Nope.
A supposed Antivan Crow strutting around like some arrogant, badly imagined, assassin version of Harry Dresden just doesn't work.
Crows are wraiths. Shadows. The whole point is that no one sees them coming!
They don't advertise like Lucanishit does. Which is why I'd rather hoped it would be his cousin Illario chosen as the romanceable companion. He actually knows how to blend in. Illario spends a lot of the story rightfully calling Lucanis on his bullshit methods.
The first of many editorial hiccups in 'The Wigmaker' is that you really are very unlikely to shove a sword through a wall like that. And a supposedly experienced assassin would probably know that?
Even modern walls have studs and often solid insulation and wires in them.
But we're talking medieval like walls, which tended to be stone or lathe and plaster. Those walls are basically a sandwich of wooden lathes with stone/gravel fill in the middle, then plaster on top. You are not shoving a sword through one. You can barely drill through one with a power drill! Even if you did manage to? It would very likely ruin the blade.
Also, that would not be the shape of the wound if you actually did manage to shove your sword through one of those walls without breaking it and into someone's hand. Because hands have these weird things called bones in them.
Fan art has Crows as more flashy, sure, but in the series itself? The most you see is skin tight clothing and dangerous eyes.
Going up to an innkeeper and bloody advertising that you're a crow? WTAF is that? Lucanishit is supposed to be the grandson of Caterina Dellamorte, First Talon to the Antivan Crows.
A black leather trenchcoat? Really? Really really? And that's just points off on the style factor. Those things became the mark of try-hards a long time ago.
Do you have any idea how noisy those coats are? How much unnecessary weight it would put on a person who is supposed to move silently and unseen? Do you have any clue how noisy those things would be when you took a flying leap like Lucanishit did in 'The Wigmaker?' (Think loud leather wings). How much wind drag there'd be wearing something so ridiculous on a contract? Any clue how hard it would be to reach your weapons under something like that? Ugh. The devil is most certainly in the details, peeps.
Okay, so moving past the utterly ridiculous sartorial choices this so called master assassin wears, he and Illario are loudly talking about being Crows on their way to the mark.
Assassins and Assassination are illegal, y'know? At least Illario tried to blend in. For which Lucanis mocked him.
They get into position, which for some reason is during a hoity toity Tevinter party rather than when the mark was, y'know, alone.
Lucanis does some incredibly unrealistic, noisy acrobatics to get some keys. That by itself I could let slide, rule of cool exists.
But he does it in that ridiculous leather trenchcoat. I don't care how unlikely people are to look up (humans really don't look up very often unless we train ourselves to do so) a giant bat like person flopping around doing acrobatics would be kinda hard to miss.
Then we move on to some murders.
Now, it's part of almost every assassin's creed that you don't harm the innocent or the servants in taking out a mark. It's mentioned a few times about the Crows. Because, again, they're supposed to be the bogeyman in the dark you never see coming.
Lucanis murders a couple of paid guards and doesn't bother to make it clean or hide the bodies.
Finally, we're into the mark's inner sanctum. There's some particularly ghoulish stuff that the mark is guilty of, so I could see why it might annoy someone.
But there they are, two Antivan Crows in a secluded area near the Mark. That, if there were any actual assassins around would've been the end of the story.
But instead of killing the mark and disappearing like any crow should, Lucanis instead decides to make the veil thin enough to allow demons to easily come through.
Into a party of drunk Tevinter mages.
So now instead of a clean, fast kill, we have around 250 possessed mages and enslaved elves. And I think I read somewhere that elves feel being demon possessed is a fate worse than death.
Obviously, this is chaos. Red lyrium somehow acts like red lyrium never has in series, which I could let go because rule of cool.
Lucanishit then proceeds to fight a weird demon possessed mark. (I would point out that in that situation it would've been the demon that killed the mark, not Lucanis.)
But yes, eventually, after torturing red-lyrium Shelob, he pokes it enough to kill it. Which in DA canon doesn't always dispatch the demon back beyond the veil.
Not even gonna go into what intentionally thinning the veil there would do. Aren't people trying to stop that?
Then Lucanis and Illario escape.
Leaving some 248 demon possessed creatures behind at a city estate in the middle of Vyrantium.
Now, like them or not, the nobility are usually the ones who have the resources to hire the crows. So Lucanis has just taken out a large portion of potentially paying clients. That alone would likely be enough to have him removed as a crow in a very final fashion.
And what exactly do y'all think would happen when those demon possessed inevitability get out of the estate?
Innocent people of Vyrantium would be slaughtered. Demons would replicate themselves and further thin the veil.
And it would be the commoners and enslaved people harmed most. Because magisters have the resources to protect themselves from demons.
There is absolutely no mention of Lucanis sticking around to clean up his mess. None.
This is not a good story on the professional level. There are major problems with it.
The writing itself is snappy and catchy. The action is fast enough that if you don't rub two brain cells together, it could be entertaining.
But my editor brain is always on. I literally cannot turn it off anymore.
My eyeballs rolled so much during this story that I'm surprised they didn't fall out and land on the floor.
From everything we know about crow culture from Zevran, from short stories and comics, from the games and bits of Lore, Lucanishit is just so badly characterized it's actually shocking that the same author wrote what is one of my favourite stories in Tevinter nights, which is 'Eight Little Talons' and which also features the crows as crows should be characterized.
I honestly think the only saving of that character for me in the upcoming game will be if someone who has actually read the Dragon Age lore on the Antivan Crows did the writing for him.
I don't even care that he looks a bit like Keanu Reeves, who is one of my all time favourite actors, nor that assassins tend to be some of my favourite classes to play.
Not even that I was really looking forward to playing a Crow again.
Man, if only Viago wasn't with Teia I'd have paid body parts for him as the companion crow (or Teia for that matter). And my polyamorous heart would've exploded in happiness to have them as a team you could potentially be in a polyam relationship with.
If that subtle, wickedly clever old Caterina Dellamorte, Lucanis and Illario's grandmother, who has kept hold of her position as First Talon for so long, saw her grandson acting like that she'd probably do what she did to Emil. (Which, in case you haven't read it, was smash his head in with a heavy handled cane then stab him to death.)
What the hell happened? Were they smoking the Harry Dresden smoke a bit heavily when they wrote 'The Wigmaker?' Some other kind of smoke? Were the editors drunk?
I swear. These things are part of why I keep saying that Bioware needs better developmental and diversity editors.
And no, I'm not talking about me. I would love to get into writing and editing for games. (Side-eyes the last year in the gaming industry. I think?)
But I don't write about Dragon Age and other games in hopes of landing a job. I do it to get these thoughts out of my head. And because I just love gaming. I've been doing it for over 30 years.
But they certainly need somebody.

ranking live action frankie's fits
#1
[ID: two screencaps of frankie stein showing off their outfit. they are wearing a black leather-esque jacket with a safety pin heart on the left side, with a blue chain hanging right below that attaches to the jacket's side pocket. frankie has a yellow lightening bolt earring and a metal chain necklace with what appears to be a supersized safety pin instead of a necklace's traditional pendant. they are wearing a black shirt, and their pants are half black on the right leg with white and black pin stripes on the left leg. end ID]
the fit they were in for most of their screentime, i believe. and it's a fucking BANGER. the jacket? the pants? with the gloves? slay, frankie
#2
[ID: screencaps of frankie wearing knee high silver boots, a yellow lightning bolt earring, a black school vest with blue trim, a white button up, and a pleated skirt that is half yellow/black plaid and half black with one yellow striped accent. their belt has a chain that splits into three, and they are wearing their safety pin heart on their vest. end ID]
the half and half skirt? beautiful. the heart safety pins? the BOOTS? what a great first outfit to introduce us to them
#3
[ID: screencaps of frankie wearing a blue lightening bolt earring, a yellow plaid shirt under a white sweater vest with black line detail. their jeans have a hole under their right knee and above their left knee. above and below both holes, grommets have been placed with decorative thread placed between them. they are wearing two belts on their waist. frankie's shoes are platforms with blue and neon lime green/highlighter yellow. their bag is either leather or faux leather with studs. end ID]
fucking work, babe! i love belts and i love plaid
#4
[ID: screencaps of frankie wearing their pajamas which consist of a boxy fit yellow hoodie with wide armholes and black pants with numerous chunky zippers all along the legs. end ID]
i fucking want these jammies. the hoodie looks so damn comfy, and the pants are chic. i want that many zippers just to look cool
#5
[ID: screencaps of frankie wearing a sweater vest with white and pink trim, a white button up with a black studded collar, a skirt with three different types of plaid – blue, green, and yellow – distressed leggings, and two belts with dangling chains on the waist. they have a large pink electric bolt earring. end ID]
a similar outfit to fit #2, but i like the skirt less. i love the pop of pink and the collar on the button up is *chef's kiss* really, if it weren't for the skirt this would be look #2
#6
[ID: screencaps of frankie wearing a striped white and black shirt. the shirt is not one continuous cut of fabric; its stripes do not line up along the front of the bodice. frankie is wearing a black pleated skirt; on the pleats are grommets with blue laces threaded through them in an "x" pattern and tied at the bottom. under the skirt is the same pair of jeans from out #3. end ID]
the skirt is cute. love the reuse of the jeans; pieces of clothes are meant to mix and match! but the overall look just isn't as visually interesting to me. it does look very comfortable, tho. i'd wear it.
#7
[ID: the monster high: the movie poster for frankie stein. in it, they are wearing a white button up under a plain black dress. the only details on the dress are the belt sleeves and the matching belt frankie has placed on their waist. a neon green chain hangs from the belt. frankie is also wearing distressed leggings and black platform boots. end ID]
unless i just missed it somehow, i only saw this fit in the actual movie in a bust shot. so. on account of not seeing the full fit in the movie it gets last place even tho i like the dress

Hey so like, I wonder if TF2 Tumblr people know about the Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades "Meat Fortress" crossover's unique weapons?
Basically there's this really in-depth VR gun simulator and it had an official TF2 crossover a while ago that's still getting new stuff added for it, and along with the default TF2 weapons (plus beta-inspired grenades with some original ones thrown in, and alternate ammo types for most weapon types, none of which I will be covering in this post for image-limit reasons) it also has a bunch of custom weapons made specifically for it!
Also yes, as you'd expect, they feel kinda weird to use compared to the more realistic options the game is based around.
Images and details below (both of which are from the wiki, since taking decent screenshots in VR is painful and also I don't remember everything about them because there's like 20).
(Please note that I'm using the wiki's classifications for what class each weapon belongs to; some of the "All Class" ones do seem to fit with specific classes, but they aren't counted as such. Sorry. Also the wiki is a Fandom one. Again, sorry.)

Plasterboard Walls & TV Mounting: Is It Safe in London?
If you're living in London and considering mounting your TV on a plasterboard wall, you might be wondering, is it safe? Plasterboard walls, also known as drywall, can present unique challenges when it comes to mounting heavy objects like TVs. Let's delve into this topic to understand the safety considerations involved.
Understanding Plasterboard Walls
Plasterboard walls are a common feature in many homes and buildings in London. They consist of a layer of gypsum sandwiched between two layers of paper. While they are lightweight and easy to install, they may not have the structural strength of traditional brick or concrete walls.
Factors to Consider
Wall Studs: When mounting a TV on a plasterboard wall, it's crucial to anchor it securely to the wall studs. Wall studs provide the necessary support to hold the weight of the TV and prevent it from falling. Using appropriate hardware, such as heavy-duty wall anchors or toggle bolts, can help distribute the weight evenly and minimize the risk of damage to the wall.
Tip: Use a stud finder to locate the studs behind the plasterboard before mounting your TV.
TV Weight: The weight of your TV plays a significant role in determining the safety of mounting it on a plasterboard wall. Larger, heavier TVs require stronger mounting hardware and may put more stress on the wall.
Tip: Check the manufacturer's specifications for your TV to ensure compatibility with plasterboard walls.
Mounting Technique: Proper mounting technique is essential for ensuring the safety and stability of your TV on a plasterboard wall. Avoid using nails or screws directly into the plasterboard, as they may not provide sufficient support.
Tip: Consider hiring a professional TV mounting service with experience in mounting TVs on plasterboard walls.
Is It Safe?
With the right hardware, techniques, and precautions, mounting a TV on a plasterboard wall can be safe in London. However, it's crucial to take the necessary steps to ensure proper installation and minimize the risk of damage or accidents.
In conclusion, while mounting a TV on a plasterboard wall in London is possible, it requires careful consideration of the factors mentioned above. To ensure the safety and stability of your TV installation, consider consulting a professional TV wall mounting service in London like TV Mount Mate for expert assistance. With their expertise and knowledge, they can help you mount your TV securely and safely on any type of wall. Don't take chances with DIY installations when it comes to your valuable electronics – trust the experts for peace of mind.

A Quirk Based On Knuckledusters? The weapon, not the character.
I have done something like that with "Fist", but I think I could do something different with by trying to incorporate the various other forms of a knuckleduster, such as versions that include knives and guns.
I see it working as a Transformation type Quirk allows the user to formed by the user clenching their fist, causing a band of metal around their knuckles and fingers. The user may form a series of studs around the bands in any configuration they wish, like spelling out their name with them. From these, the user may grow a series of spikes up to a foot long. These spikes have serious piercing power, capable of puncturing other metal with ease. The user may fire out these spikes over short ranges, shooting them out like a bolt into whatever is in their way. This gives the user a solid offensive Quirk, making them a major issue in close quarters. They can surprise foes by extending their range, digging into surfaces to climb them, peppering foes with metal spikes, suddenly switching up their fighting style on the fly, or just punching their name into walls. Though the Quirk only forms on the user's hands, limiting their attack options and leaving the rest of them open, and the metal can be pushed too far, requiring a brief amount of time to regain it. The Quirk requires extensive physical training to make the most of it in a fight. A possible name for the Quirk could be "Knuckledown".

Drywall anchors are usually either plastic (for light duty) or metal cones that self-tap into the drywall but don’t expand.
The “lunar lander” types are called molly bolts and are also for drywall but they’re not as easily removable.
Now the real issue is in older late 19th / early 20th century construction that used plaster and lath.
Lath is usually thin strips of wood (and sometimes, metal mesh like chicken wire) nailed to the studs, with slight gaps between them, over which plaster is laid to create the wall surface.
Here’s a photo of a plaster and lath wall seen from the other side; you can see how the plaster penetrates between the strips, allowing it to grip into it.
For these kinds of walls, toggle bolts (#6 and 7 in the original video) work best, and you need to predrill a hole to get it through the wood.
For heavy items like mirrors or TVs, use a magnetic stud finder to locate the nails securing the lath to the studs and drill into the stud.

The Best Practices for Choosing the Right Bolts and Nuts for Your Project
Bolts and nuts are fundamental fasteners in various industrial sectors, playing a key role in everything from construction to machinery. Available in a wide range of sizes and materials, these components are specifically designed to meet the varying demands of different projects, ensuring stability, safety, and performance.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Bolts and Nuts
MaterialFor environments prone to corrosion or rust, stainless steel bolts are the best choice. They offer enhanced durability and resistance to harsh conditions. Additionally, choosing the right material, such as stainless steel u bolt manufacturers provide, can improve the longevity of your project.
StrengthThe strength of bolts depends on their size and grade. It’s crucial to select bolts with the right load-bearing capacity to avoid failures. For example, foundation bolts and foundation j bolts are commonly used in construction and should be chosen based on their strength requirements.
ThreadingThe threading of bolts plays a significant role in the performance of your fastening system. Fine threads offer greater precision, while coarse threads provide better grip. Both have their applications, and selecting the correct thread type is key to ensuring the effectiveness of the fastener.
Common Types of Bolts and Nuts
Hex BoltsHex bolts are versatile and provide a strong grip, making them ideal for construction projects. Their six-sided head allows for easy installation using standard wrenches.
Carriage BoltsWith a rounded head, carriage bolts are commonly used for fastening wood and metal. Their unique design prevents them from spinning once installed, providing a secure hold.
Wing NutsWing nuts allow for hand tightening, making them useful for temporary or quick fixes where tools are not available.
Anchor NutsAnchor nuts are critical for securing components to concrete or masonry. They are often used in conjunction with anchor bolt manufacturer products to ensure stability in construction.
Why the Right Bolt and Nut Combination Matters
Selecting the correct combination of bolt and nut is crucial for ensuring the stability and performance of your fastening system. Mismatched or poor-quality components can lead to failures, resulting in costly repairs and damage. For example, bolts like stud bolt or U bolts manufacturers products need to be paired with compatible nuts to maintain the integrity of the structure.
Conclusion
In any construction or industrial project, the right choice of bolts and nuts plays a pivotal role in securing the components. By carefully considering the material, strength, and threading, and by choosing trusted suppliers like stainless steel u bolt manufacturers or u clamp manufacturer, you ensure the success and durability of your project.

The World of Fixing Accessories: What Are They? & Why Important?
Fixing accessories are some of the most important parts utilised in holding and connecting different materials in construction, DIY projects, and furniture assembly. These small but vital elements play a significant role in ensuring that the structure is fully intact, safe, and functional for various applications. Ever wonder how your bookshelf stays securely on the wall? The answer can be found in the right fixing accessories that hold everything together.
II. Types of Fixing Accessories
Screws
Screws are general-purpose fasteners that come in a variety of types, each with a specific application. Common types include:
Wood Screws: They are made to grip wood fibres, and thus they have coarse threads.
Drywall Screws: They are specifically made for attaching drywall to wood or metal studs.
Self-Tapping Screws: They make their own threads in materials like plastic or sheet metal.
Screw head styles vary, such as Phillips, slotted, and Torx and materials vary from steel to stainless steel and brass, each offering different levels of strength and corrosion resistance.
Anchors
Anchors are important when fastening items to materials that cannot support regular screws alone, such as concrete or drywall. Types of anchors include:
Expansion Anchors: These include wedge anchors and sleeve anchors that expand within the material for a secure hold.
Toggle Bolts: Great for hollow walls because the load spreads over a wider area
Chemical Anchors: Anchors that get fixed to the substrate by means of a resin, therefore provide high-strength
Wall Plugs: Simple plastic plugs that will take a screw grip in softer materials
Fasteners
Fasteners make up a bigger category, including
Bolts: with nuts, create secure joints. Types: carriage bolt, eye bolt.
Nuts and Washers: Necessary for transmitting loads and avoiding loosening.
Rivets: Permanent-type fasteners are used in manufacturing and construction.
Clips and Clamps: These are useful for temporarily joining materials together when assembling.
III. Selecting the Right Fixing Accessory
Selecting the correct fixing accessory depends on various considerations:
Material Considerations
Determine what type of materials you are connecting (wood, metal, concrete) since this will determine the use of screws or anchors.
Load-Bearing Capacity
Consider how much weight the fixing accessory needs to hold. For heavier items, use stronger anchors or bolts designed for high load-bearing applications.
Application
Determine the purpose of the fixing accessory, whether it is to hang pictures, secure furniture, or provide structural support, as this will guide your selection.
Aesthetics
If the fixing accessory will be visible, choose options that blend well with your décor or can be painted over to match.
IV. Fixing Accessories in Action
Fixing accessories is integral to various projects:
DIY Projects
From hanging shelves and pictures to assembling furniture and tackling home improvement tasks, the right fixing accessories ensure everything stays in place securely.
Construction Applications
In construction, fixing accessories is vital for framing and sheathing structures, securing HVAC systems, and installing electrical and plumbing fixtures. They contribute significantly to building safety and longevity.
V. Safety Considerations
Always employ safety when working with accessories to fix:
Use correct tooling for accidental prevention.
Wear glasses safely to prevent debris from striking your eyes.
Do not overtighten screws and bolts since this may create tears in the material.
Select only the right type of accessories for your application.
What interesting fixing accessory projects have you tackled lately?
Choosing the right fixing accessories for any project, whether a simple DIY or a complex construction job, is crucial. Knowing what types are available and their specific applications will ensure you get secure and reliable results. Next time you tackle a project, think about what fixing accessories you might need to succeed.
