Stucky, Endgame Fix-it, Road Trip Get Together

Occasional circular fields of cultivation, trimmed down to green trampled-down stalks or gone already to straw-colored stubs whip on by as Bucky works back up to his first tearing speed on this road without many other travelers. And the road stays like a line drawn against the hard edge of a ruler on some American map, an abstract decision continuing on under a sky filled with fluffy white clouds that drift somber, graying, as the land goes just dead flat, no hills, no mountains, nothing: right out to the severe joining line of the horizon.

Bucky makes great time to nowhere.

Why are we doing this? The question haunts Steve as the miles and the minutes go by in silence—and not just any silence, but the silence of big rattling spaces that nobody could fill.

But then, if Steve knew the answer to that, they wouldn't be on this long stretch of road, now would they?

Celebrating 10 Years of CA:TWS — A Stucky Rec List

Rec list for the CA:TWS 10th Anniversary Event @catws-anniversary (thank you so much for organizing this event! 💙) | Prompt: Memories

10 years, huh? 10 years of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. 10 years of what many—myself included—still consider to be the best MCU movie ever made.

But also 10 years of post-TWS fanfiction. 10 years of Bucky Barnes Recovering and Steve Rogers' Sadness Errands; of Up All Night to Get Bucky and Revenge Road Trips; of Winter Soldier Trauma Umbrellas and Everybody Needing A Goddamn Hug; of Good Bros and Soft Epilogues. 10 years and tens of thousands of Steve/Bucky fics later, here we are.

So, to mark the occasion, let's take a trip down memory lane and celebrate the movie and the stories it inspired: One fic from each year since it all began:

There's really only one rule here: All fics are set before, during, or after the events of CA:TWS and/or reimagine its plot in interesting ways. Naturally, many of the fics on this list are post-TWS canon divergent, but I tried to go for a nice variety of length, genre, and popularity to keep it interesting. Speaking of popularity, this is very much not intended as a round-up of ‘most popular fics of each year’ because—and I say this with all the love and respect in my heart for those stories and their authors—nobody needs a rec list for that, and I believe in spreading the love. Here we go:

Poltergeists by enemyofrome | 17K, T

Author's summary: When the helicarriers blow up and the Winter Soldier goes on the run, he takes Steve with him. He's got a name written in Morse code on the inside of his arm, a ton of questions he doesn't know how to ask, and now, a new handler with absolutely zero sense of self-preservation to contend with. Life is hard. In which Bucky tries to figure out whether he's a human being, Steve does everything he can to keep from losing him again, and there are lots of explosions.

Starting off with one of the best versions of the 'Bucky didn't leave Steve, he took him with him after the Potomac' fics that were (and still are!) so popular post-TWS. This one stands out because of its fantastic beginning, its interesting take on how Bucky was broken and remade into the Winter Soldier, and because it allows both characters to be messy. It's a popular fanon trope that it's Steve who brings out a ruthless, almost vicious streak in Bucky, but here it's emphasized that this is very much a mutual thing. Just like Bucky, who's often afforded the "excuse" of still figuring out how to be a person again, Steve gets to be difficult here—without ever turning him into a stubborn asshole. They're both traumatized, and they're both allowed to show it and to lash out, including at each other. Also, this fic will give you capital-F Feelings about morse codes and apples. Believe me.

sleepwalk back to the battle site by ftmsteverogers | 22K, T

Author's summary: “I’m going to track down every HYDRA agent that’s left,” Bucky says, buckling his gun deftly to his belt. “And then I’m going to kill them.” “Oh,” Steve says. “Come with me?” Bucky asks, dangerous hands tucked into his pockets.

A classic post-TWS fic that picks up right after the movie ends. Equal parts Revenge Roadtrip, Bucky Barnes recovering, and Steve Rogers being in urgent need of a good hug. This starts out intensely melancholic—Steve's despair and helplessness are palpable and there's a scene involving a drinking glass that still brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. Halfway through, the story changes pace and becomes much more action-heavy, but it still manages to allow space for the quiet, intimate moments between Steve and Bucky. They have both become sharp and deadly men, but they're also allowed to be soft with each other. Their coming together feels sweet and inevitable. I also really enjoyed the Steve characterization here. His absolute conviction that Bucky is still Bucky at his very core and always will be, but also his emotional and intellectual flexibility to adapt to this still-new-to-him, changed version of Bucky rang very true to me.   

Surveillance by Sproings, 7K in 2 parts, G

Author's summary: If there are ears everywhere, that means it's somebody's job to listen. I hate my job.

Do you ever think about how SHIELD bugged Steves DC apartment and how horrible that was, but also...you're kind of curious what they might have overheard? Do you ever wonder about the people who listened in on his sad, lonely life? Well, here you go. An outsider POV fic told "through the ears" of an unnamed SHIELD agent assigned to spy on the private life of a man who doesn't really have much of one. The story begins just before IM3 and takes us all the way through the events of CA:TWS and beyond. It's clever, original and told with great empathy for both the subject under surveillance and the person carrying out that surveillance—who increasingly questions its purpose. Here's a small snippet to give you an idea of the fic's style:

He got a phone call, once. He put it on speaker, too, which was very exciting for me at the time. It was from an archivist at the Smithsonian. They seemed really surprised that he answered his own phone calls. The two of them talked for a long time about an exhibit the museum was planning. A very long time. As if one of them was starstruck, and the other was desperate for any kind of human interaction.

What Gets You Through by velleities | 12K, M

Author's summary: For Steve, getting through each day is a process – one he’s currently failing at spectacularly. Feeling out of place in this brave new world, he hopes to find a home in Bucky, and looks for him with everything he’s got. But Bucky doesn’t want to be found, and when he does touch base with Steve, he never sticks around for long. Bucky has embraced the modern age, leaving Steve lagging behind – or so Steve believes, until Bucky shows him otherwise.

This post-TWS fic revolves around five encounters in liminal spaces, and each time Bucky has pieced himself back together again just a little more. Despite their increasingly longer and more honest conversations, and Bucky's incremental progress, he always disappears again, leaving Steve to grapple with his heartbreak. There are quietly gorgeous moments in this fic (the bus and the church in particular were my personal favorites) as well as wonderfully crafted characterizations. Bucky is initially portrayed as somewhat feral in some ways yet surprisingly well-adjusted in others, and I love that Steve can't help but be a little annoyed at that. However, it quickly becomes clear that, in good old Bucky Barnes fashion, much of it is really just a front put up for Steve's benefit...

A Real Boy by itsnotbleak | 5K, T

Author's summary: It took the Winter Soldier three weeks to remember that human beings needed to sleep and eat. It took Steve far too long to realise the Winter Soldier was sleeping in his bed.

A wonderful, short-but-doesn't-feel-like-it fic (in the very best way) set immediately after CA:TWS, in which Bucky secretly and then soon not so secretly visits Steve in his apartment. Follow along as Bucky Barnes argues with his brain about sandwich toppings, the importance of a good night's sleep, and the necessity of personal hygiene. Also: how to best go about becoming a real boy (again). And who the hell is that Bucky guy anway? This is as soft and sweet a Bucky recovery fic as you're ever going to find. It's funny but not silly; sad in a way that all of these stories inherently are—because, well, these are some tragic boys—but not super angsty or depressing. A beautiful story with a lovely, hopeful ending.

Savage God by PottersPink | 36K, M

Author's summary (abbr.): Past, present, future, Steve knows Bucky Barnes. It’s why he recognized him when he found him in that alley in April of 1942, even though Bucky was older, stronger, wearier; he called himself The Asset, and had a metal fucking arm. He flinched when Steve tried to touch him, and when Steve told him he loved him, his first response was to ask why. Seventy years later, Steve wakes up in the twenty-first century, and he doesn’t know whether to be heartbroken or hopeful when some of the things Bucky revealed to him in 1942 start falling into place.

An absolutely riveting AU that will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time. I'm itching to talk about it more but I cannot since it would mean spoiling the hell out of it. What I can say is that it's a very intriguing and clever exploration of what would happen if Steve knew about the future but without really knowing any of the details. How would it change the events of CA:TFA and CA:TWS, and how would it change Steve himself? I so very much appreciate this characterization of Steve as smart, competent, and unwavering with a hefty dose of no fucks left to give. This fic features some really nifty time travel and plotting, great action sequences and a very satisfying ending where certain people get their much-deserved comeuppance. Plus: Bonus Shrinkyclinks (kind of)!

Charlie Lock by seapigeon | 105K, M (hard M)

Author's summary (abbr.): The Winter Soldier knows that sometimes, in order to make the kill, you must destroy what the Target lives for. Steve Rogers knows that he can't fight his captors. If he fights, they'll kill Bucky. But the price of his life is steep. Tony Stark has nothing left to live for, but he's needed. So all these miserable motherfuckers better stay alive, too. Clint Barton never expected to be a leader. But a leader he is, and no one else is going to die on his watch. --- A story in which the first wave of Project Insight succeeds, and the Avengers must pick up the pieces and find a way to stop Hydra from completing its work with Zola's algorithm.

This is not only the longest fic on this list, but also the angstiest one—by a mile, so please heed the tags. It's dark, disturbing, and brutal. However, it is neither relentless misery porn nor is it shocking for shock's sake, where everything is magically forgotten and/or healed the moment Steve and Bucky start kissing. Instead, the author puts these characters into an absolutely horrifying situation and then slowly, gently guides them out of it and into the light.

It's a Stucky fic but it's also a multi-POV ensemble piece featuring all the Avengers and other familiar faces. If you are someone who'll always be a little bitter about the unfulfilled promise of an Avengers found family, then this is for you. In this AU, they do not only fight together, but grow together in every way. They truly become a team, not just co-workers barely tolerating each other. The story takes its time exploring the characters and the group dynamics. Steve and Bucky are definitely at the center of the narrative but there is space here for every member of the team to grieve and adjust to the new reality and to find at least some measure of healing. It's a story about the meaning and the consequences of revenge, about hope and resilience, and about love in all its many forms. It also has one of the most satisfying title drops that will have you pump your fist in triumph when it happens. It's a tough read, but ultimately a very rewarding one.

SPELEVINK by Ginny_Potter | 10K, G

Author's summary: Bucky’s back. He’s leaving me messages through IKEA plushies, Steve texts Sam. jesus christ, rogers, Sam texts back. Or, Bucky lives in an IKEA Tiny Apartment, Steve is a dancing monkey once again, and somehow they find their way back to each other.

This is an absolute DELIGHT of a fic that will have you alternately laughing out loud and crying quietly into your SVARTFIBBLA blanket (super-soft, recycled polyester, 47x63"). It's ‘crack treated seriously’ at its very best and a clear homage to the fandom classic Infinite Coffee… (that’s not a dig or a spoiler, the author says so in the author’s note).

Now if you know me, you’ll know that angst o’clock is my happy hour and I’m usually not very into these heavy-on the-humor quasi-absurdist fics (because I’m super special and not like all the other girls, obviously). But. I LOVED this story so, so much. It’s such a fun read—even when it makes you cry—and it really became one of those ‘huh, I guess I’m into this after all’ moments of joyful (self)discovery via fanfic for me. I never thought a pair of oven mitts could move me like that, and I'll never be able to walk into an IKEA again without muttering "F******!" under my breath (iykyk). Absolutely fantastic.

a handful of dust by RecoveringTheSatellites | 20K, M

Author's summary: Steve looks for Bucky for a long time. But the thing is that Bucky doesn't get found, Bucky finds. Bucky always finds Steve. This takes a hard left after the Potomac and stumbles through the dark a lot after. Take a bit of running, the occasional synaptic misfire, the resurfacing of old memories, a dash or two of PTSD, and (eventually) a nice dose of action, stir, and serve over some unresolved issues.

Honestly, the second paragraph up there perfectly sums up the story. It's a good ol' fashioned Bucky recovery fic with some angst, some action, and a whole lot of healing and devotion. Steve and Bucky get to be very sappy about each other, but also extremely Badass Battle Boyfriends™ when somebody threatens their hard-won happiness. Both are allowed to be messy, unstable, and very co-dependent.

This was the first time this author played in the Stucky sandbox and I mean it 100% as a compliment when I say that you can tell. This is someone with "fresh legs" diving headfirst and very deep into the Stucky trope pool and they're doing it with great relish and enthusiam. The result is a story that rejects some of the tried and true conventions of the post-TWS fanfic canon and lovingly embraces others, but that is definitely aware of and in dialogue with the body of work that came before it. Also, it's just a really fun read that gives these two the very soft ending they deserve.

Everybody is Supposed to be Dead by pollutedstar | 22K, M

Author's summary: In 1944, Bucky Barnes falls off a train into the Alps, missing and presumed dead. Months later, Steve Rogers nosedives a plane into the arctic. In 2010, the Winter Soldier project is uncovered by S.H.I.E.L.D., and Bucky Barnes is found alive. Three years later, Steve Rogers’ frozen body is found in the ocean.

A really interesting AU and a fascinating exploration of what could’ve been; the impact it would’ve had on the events and characters if Bucky had been the one to be “found” first. How would it affect Steve to come back into a world where he isn’t quite so lonely and adrift, and where he does have the relief and reassurance of having Bucky by his side and at his back? How would that have changed the way he acted and reacted to this strange new world and the people and organizations trying to recruit him to their cause even though the ice hasn't even completely melted off his body yet?

There are a lot of astute and precise observations about characters like Tony, Natasha, and Clint in this story, and on top of that, it offers up some very compelling insights into Steve's conflicted and difficult relationship with his role as Captain America.

it's never over (hey orpheus) by romcommie | 12K WIP, 2/?, M

Author's summary: He remembers a song first and then everything else follows, burying him below. Or, Bucky Barnes pieces a life back together with a few choice verses, some duct tape and seventy years worth of spite. Steve Rogers tries very hard to relearn there's a life to be lived in the first place.

Ok, listen up, people! This is a WIP and there are only 2 chapters posted so far, but I haven't felt this absolutely bonkers excited about a post-CA:TWS fic in a long while. We're talking frothing at the mouth here. I have such a massive crush on this fic, it's a bit embarrassing, really. It's one of those fics where you know after just a few paragraphs that you're in very good, very competent hands. The wealth of historical and cultural detail; the way the story shifts/flips/flickers back and forth between time, perspective and narrative levels; the Bucky voice—it's all so well done! I'm so insanely excited to see where the author takes this!

Almost.” Bucky felt something - or some things - lightly touch his left shoulder blade. “I’d say this won’t hurt a bit,” Steve chuckled darkly, “but then we’d both be disappointed, wouldn’t we?”

13 - Do you outline your fics? If yes, how detailed are your outlines? How far do you stray from them?

I am very much a seat-of-the-pants writer - if Im lucky, I sketch out a paragraph or so of plot ahead of time. That said, I spend A Lot of time working fics out in my head before they make it to the written word.

26 - What’s your least favorite part of the writing process?

If I haven't come up with a title ahead of time, probably that, and summaries can also be a challenge.

36 - What fic are you proudest of?

Ooof - that's a toughie! The Lengths that I Will Go To is my novel-length (92k) canon-divergent Stony fic that I'm still not sure how I managed to pull off. But I'm also proud of my very first fanfic - Out of The Blue. (wartime!Bucky /OFC that IMHO manages not to be a Mary Sue/reader insert) and I have a very soft spot for So Open Up, I'm Climbin' In - College AU WinterIron + Sam & Steve roadtrip.

67 - If a fic was titled [see above], what would this story be about/how would you write it?

My first thought was a follow up to my selkie!Tony/amputee!Bucky fic Make My Heart Come All Undone where Tony is teaching Bucky how to surf (and maybe finds a way for him to shift?)

favourite fluff fic scene/fantasy with Steve and Buck? :)

Oh hello there, thank you for a fantastic ask that's equally easy and difficult to ask.

I LOVE fluff for these two. I love any kind of mundane situation where they are relaxed together.

Grocery shopping, an afternoon home, PDAs, a night out, a fucking ride on the bus... ANYTHING is game for me with them as long as they're happy and together. In any universe.

I specially love fluffy moments where they mix being absolute shit to each other (best friends forever!) to suddenly shift the mood and become the most tooth-rooting couple EVER, only to be back to smacking each other with a pillow or something.

I want them to be HAPPY.

That's regarding FANTASY, because my mind is made of fluff, any fic or headcanon by me that you read is going to be fluffy as hell.

And fluffy fics that are not mine or a fantasy in my head... I've recced things in this tag and most of them are fluffy. I made this post, too focusing on some fav happy fics and arts....

28 - What got you into comics?

Hercules. For some reason, I guess bc I saw a beefy man in a skirt & blacked out, I bought the Greg Pak Incredible Hercules run one day on a whim and I loved it. I was obsessed with this large muscular man & his super smart friend Amadeus & their little adventures it was good. I went online once I finished, found there was a new solo called Still Going Strong, went back to Forbidden Planet & read that & I loved it too! I wasn't like majorly online, not in marvel fandom spaces at that time, so I didn't know unfortunately of Dan Abnett biphobia, although sir you did have Herc & Gilgamesh live together in a one bedroom apartment later with a genderfluid immortal seer & a woman from prehistoric times so task failed that was pretty bi & polyamorous of you? Anyway, then discovered Civil War 2: Gods of War, and went back to Forbidden Planet & bought & read that.

This was when I made a fatal mistake. See, Gods of War, which I loved, is a tie-in to Civil War 2. I, a fool not knowing anything about comics, rationalised to myself "hey. if this is a tie-in, I bet Hercules shows up in the main comic too bc they make a big deal out of it in the tie-in!". So I returned to the comic shop & purchased the collection of Civil War 2, which by the way was fucking expensive! & I read & hated it! the art was nice & that's all I'll say! The writing was sloppy & ridiculous, I barely understood who the Inhumans were, & I've never fully liked Carol since.

Anyway, I didn't touch comics again after that, not until I was watching MCU films with a friend whowas heavily into the MCU & Stucky. I had watched some of these but was mostly casual. This changed when I got out of Endgame & was suddenly angry about the fact that Vision hadn't shown up. Like, in a way I hadn't felt about them before. Anyway, I went online & discovered No Road Home was a thing. Hercules was there, Vision was there, Wanda was there, as was a bunch of characters I recognised, so I bought & read that and immediately became insane & I am now the incredibly annoying individual you see today.

Shout out to @solipsism-lemonade though for rping with me on my wattpad days who fuelled a lot of my obsession <3

40 - What's a comic that's so bad you ended up finding it funny?

I've talked abt it before but what the fuck was going on in Vision (1994). Why were they a detective. Why was their evil alternate universe self there. Why was Ultron an alcoholic. Why was Jocasta golden. They explain it all but do they really. What was Vision's roadtrip with alcoholic Ultron & Jocasta about what happened. There's just so much going on & it's so viscerally 90s but it's good??? 90s alcoholic Ultron come back the kids miss you.

41 - What's a comic that keeps on giving (you enjoy rereading)?

Age of Ultron #10 for sure, I've reread it many times & I love it so much. There's so much genuine hope & inspiration there, it's a comic I think everyone should read before they talk abt how horrible Hank is. Like it's the comic I come back to the most to explain why he resonates with me so much; because he so clearly struggles with himself, with others, with being a superhero, but there's positive sides to that too & I really appreciate after years of being given such a short stick or usually focusing on the worst of him, that Waid gave a real focus to the best. Mr Waid stop touching Dr Doom n get on Hank instead!!!

Road Trip

Title : Road Trip Part 1 Relationship: Bucky x Steve Stucky poeple! AU So Its been a wail since I wrote anything, Hope you guys like it! there will be more than one part not sure how many there will be yet!  Here we go!

   Steve pulled at his apron hanging from his neck feeling like it was to tight as a customer pointed a longer finger at him with his face burning red. “You should know how to run a store better than this. Im never shopping here again!” The man spoke stronger giving steve a glare. “I want to speak to your manager.” Steve swallowed at the lump in his throat as about ten people were standing behind the man waiting in line for the check out. Steve went over his head set and asked for one of the managers to come up front to talk to the rude customer. “Is there anyone else working here?!” A women yelled from the line and steves hands started to shake. “Im sorry ma’am were a bit short staffed right now.” He spoke trying to make his voice not crack. He moved over to another register helping the other people in line as the manager walked up and started to speak to the man, He pointed at Steve and told the older lady with long brown hair that was tied up into a pony tail a bright green apron on with a manager tag on the left side of the apron and a name tag under it Peggy. “This young man will not listen to a word im saying why in the world would you have people like him working here!” The man yelled as Peggy calmed him down.    Steve was still swallowing at the lump in this throat as the line started to go down and Peggy hopped on to help him. The Rest of the customers spoke rude comments to steve about how they shouldnt have had to wait so long in line. Once the line was down Peggy patted steve on the shoulder. “Come on Steve...I know you can do better than this.” He didnt say anything didnt even want to look over at her. It had been a long 9 hour shift and he wasnt even done with his day. That had been the 5th person to yell at him today and he couldnt take anymore. “Sorry Peggy..” He said softly almost a whisper as she started to walk away. “Go take a break Steve...”    Steve took the back way to the back room trying to stay away from as many people as he could. He felt like he couldnt breathe. “Dont have an anxiety attack here steve.” He whispered to him self. “Dont do it” He started to untie his apron and pushed open the back exit door letting it slam behind him. His apron was hanging from his neck untied as his hand held his chest he started to pace. “Stop it steve” He spoke to himself again before his back hit the back wall and he slid down it putting his head into his hands and his elbows on his knees.   He wasnt sure how long he had sat there like that but his phone started to buzz in his pocket. Sighing he slowly took it out answering. “You always know when to call.” Steve half smiled as buckys laugh on the other end made him start to relax. “Should I even ask how work is going?” Steve sighed and didnt say anything. “That bad huh?” Steve rubbed his eyes still not speaking as the lump in his throat came back. He heard the line go dead and pulled the phone from his ear to look at it confused. “Hey punk” He heard looking up seeing Bucky coming from around the corner Stopping infront of steve holding out his hands for him to take. Steve grabbed them and helped himself to his feet, “what are you doing here?” Steve asked tilting his head, He coulnt help the smile on his face, “What I cant stop by and see my boyfriend at work?” Steve shook his head and pulled bucky into a hug hiding his face into his neck as buckys arms wrapped around him and slowly rubbed his back. Steve was getting lost in the warmth and smell of bucky before pulling away looking at him confused, “Wait why arnt you at work?” Bucky took in a short breath and rubbed the back of his neck and shrugged. “Um...well..” He pulled at steves loose apron and started to chew on his lip. “Well what?” Steve asked watching his eyes. “I kinda told my boss to fuck off sooo...” He shrugged again not looking up at steve still playing with his apron. Steve just let out a hearty laugh “Are you kidding me?” Bucky just shook his head and started to lift steves apron over his head and off of him. “What do you say we get out of here?” Bucky asked this time looking at steve in the eyes and smirked dropping the apron on the ground. “Buck I have like 2 more hours to go and im pretty sure im taking a “to long of a break.” Making air quotes.  Just as he said that he heard someone yelling over his ear piece asking where steve was at. He flinched looking down. Bucky could hear the voices over his head set and pulled at the little wire that the ear piece was hooked to the radio and pulled it off from steves ear as his other hand slowly slid down steves side and to his ass grabbing it before grabbing a hold of the radio before steve could stop him dropping it on the ground as well with a smirk.    “I dont kn-” Before steve could finish bucky put his hands on the sides of steves face and kissed him hard on the lips pulling away with a big popping sound. “Thats it punk were out of here!” He grabbed steves hand and pulled him down to the side walk to leave the store. “Buck-” Bucky held up his hand as he pulled steve behind him. “were leaving this town for a wail.” Steve was still confused and pulled buckys arm to stop him as people on the sidewalk walked around them. “What are you talking about buck!” As Soon as steve had said that one of the workers from steves store walked out the back door and saw steves stuff on the ground and steve standing on the side walk. “Shit” Steve gasped and pushed bucky to start running. He couldnt help but laugh when he heard bucky laughing behind him.   They were almost to their apartment when bucky stopped dead in his tracks by their car making steve slightly stumble “Thats it..” Steve gave him a weird look opening his mouth to speak but bucky cut him off. “Road trip!” he slapped steve on the back and ran into the apartment building leaving steve standing on the side walk.    When he had gotten inside bucky was in their bedroom cramming things into a suitcase. Steve stood in the doorway leaning on it crossing his arms across his chest watching. Bucky glanced up at him running around the room throwing random things into it as steves phone started to buzz. He slipped it out from his pocket and saw it was work and sighed, Bucky ran over to him snatching it out from his hand and threw it onto the bed. “No do not answer that steve.” Steve glared at him slightly. “Why are we doing this buck...” Bucky started to move around the room again. “You think I like it when you come home at all hours of the day stressed out of your mind?” Steve started to chew on his lip looking down at his feet. “Hearing about how many people yell at you for no good reason making you feel like shit?” He felt buckys finger under his chin lifting it up so steve would look at him. Steve had tears in his eyes. “I know what that job is doing to you and im not going to stand back and let people walk all over my baby because they feel like they have the right to.” Steve blinked letting a tear run down his cheek chewing on his lip harder “Do you even know how hard it was seeing you behind the store like that today?” bucky stopped talking and sighed before he smiled at him sweetly kissing his cheek and the tear away. “Now lets pack and get the hell away from here for awail...what do you say?” He asked dropping his finger and steve took in a deep breath before nodding “Why the hell not.” Bucky clapped his hands together and jumped slightly “YES!” he ran back over to the suitcase and tried to jam it shut sitting on it as steve laughed, “Dont break it buck!”   Part 2

dis fic is genuinely the best thing i have ever read…bucky as captain america, steve as the winter soldier. plays into the hypothetical canon of the winter soldier being an existence in and of itself.

focuses on winter soldier steve being borderline psychopathic in his apathetic violence but he rlly likes sneaking into bucky's room past dark with knives...

“Steve,” he says, choking on the guilt but trying not to show it because Steve hates that, gets so angry. Not the righteous rage he was so fond of from when he was five-foot spitfire but a vicious, violent rage that makes every one of Bucky’s instincts bristle until he forces his mind into a sniper-like calm.

“I know the name,” Steve says. “You can stop reminding me.”

Bucky doesn’t respond to that, not because he doesn’t have anything to say but because it’s all been said already, over and over and over, and he can make Steve hear but can’t make him listen. Steve would have kept trying if their roles were reversed. Bucky doesn’t have his spirit. All he can do is bleed on the altar of Steve’s rage and pray the blood will wash him clean.

i would not describe myself as being a shipper of traditional stucky but there are people on ao3 who are simply geniuses...voxofthevoid is my crush, it’s criminal not to indulge. notlucy on there is incredible too, here is a 44 chapter fic centering around sirens, carny travels (roadtrip woooo) found family, and here is another fic by her featuring winter soldier bucky x modern, normal steve. both great pieces!

notlucy is so addicting to read cause her work is very professionally done in the sense that she focuses a lot on universe building and very slow character development that = nice pacing that leaves you hooked
