I love how a well-written romance is so often structured as a mystery. A person starts with a certain idea about another person, and over the course of the story, they uncover more evidence that gives them a fuller picture of who the other person truly is. They learn about layers to the personality and backstory that give the other person more depth. They learn how the other person's personality meshes with theirs. Even the third-act misunderstanding fits the mystery structure--it looks like they've uncovered the final secret to the other person's identity, which is that they're not the worthy person they seemed to be, but then discover that they misinterpreted that evidence, or the other person takes steps to apologize and repair the level of trust. When the mystery is resolved, they've reached a full understanding of each other and know they've found a partner they can trust their whole future to.

My honest opinion: the Switch 2 Direct had several “Yay!” moments, but a LOT of “meh” ones too.
Despite having lots of cool things to announce, and very little bad, it ultimately felt poorly structured and in my opinion emphasised many of the wrong things.
My favourites (and my criticisms) under the cut. Spoilers from here on out so be careful:
Favourites:
- Mario Kart World. I desperately want to see more of this because it looks ridiculously fully featured. Open world racers haven’t always landed with me, but the idea of exploring a massive game world full of Mario Kart’s design and sensibilities? Exquisite.
- Donkey Kong Bonanza. Redesign aside, this is gonna be fantastic. I love the idea of a more chaotic 3D platformer than we’d normally expect to see from Nintendo, plus after 25 years, it’s high time DK got another crack at 3D.
- The Duskbloods. Holy shit, I was not expecting this. Mind blown. Can’t wait to get my hands on this. Miyazaki saw Sony dragging their feet and finally took matters into his own hands, huh!
- Kirby’s Air Riders. I imagine a few people might have preferred it if the game Sakurai’s been alluding to had turned out to be Smash 6, but I’m mostly just glad that he’s had a chance to do what he wants and develop a different passion project, rather than getting fed straight back into the Smash Bros grinder.
- Deltarune. I’ve actually been putting off playing Deltarune for a good long while, because I didn’t like the idea of starting a massive story and then having to wait so long for a conclusion (not a shot at the release model, just my own inability to hold characters and scenarios in my head). But now I’m finally gonna be able to play the whole thing, and I am Hype.
Least favourite game announcement:
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (specifically the GameCube version, via emulation, on the NSO subscription): Just let me pay for the HD remaster with all the improvements they made for Wii U, rather than paying monthly to have access to the inferior version of the game, through the lens of Nintendo’s questionable emulation, thanks.
My general criticisms of the Direct:
Oh boy. This is gonna read as very negative, which kind of sucks because on the basis of what was shown, there is a LOT to be excited about. But I think taken as a whole, the presentation left a lot to be desired and didn’t add up to a great first impression. It was less than the sum of its parts, and really shouldn’t have been. Let me explain.
They spent a good deal of time showcasing hardware feature, particularly the camera and mouse mode. This was a great idea in theory, they failed to reveal much in the way compelling gameplay that integrates them - particularly the mouse. DragXDrive is a start, but it looked to be the barest of bones on this first showing.
A lot of time in the early to mid presentation was spent re-announcing games that are already confirmed for Switch 1 and explaining how some of them will be very slightly better on Switch 2. While, again there’s nothing wrong with this idea, leading with, and placing major emphasis on minor performance upgrades and expansions to Switch 1 games, some of which have been available for many years, does not create a compelling case for sinking hundreds into a new console. This is something you factor in at the end of the presentation, not as one of the first concrete details you cover.
(Side note - I actually think this is cause for concern. While the reasons for the Wii U’s failure were many and complex, very few people at this point would claim a lack of quality games - in fact the later success of much of the Wii U’s library on the Switch indicates the opposite! However, one factor I do often see cited is that the Wii U’s marketing failed to set it apart as something fresh and vital. Seeing Nintendo pitch, at great length, their brand new console’s ability to run a Zelda game from 2017 at a higher frame rate, and/or an expensive way to play games already announced for Switch 1, before they so much as pulled out a second exclusive Switch 2 title, did not fill me with confidence that the right lessons were learned.)
To be more positive for a moment, the major exclusive announcements all looked fab to me, especially DK Bonanza and The Duskbloods (!!). I think it’s fair to say I was expecting more exclusives, and that I’m surprised that the whole thing went by with no mention of a 3D Mario. It’s also worth noting that, of the major, not-on-Switch-1 exclusives (Mario Kart, DK, Hyrule Warriors 3, Duskbloods, Kirby Air Riders), only Mario Kart will be available at launch, which is a bit of a blow if like me, you were hoping for a big, single player experience at launch. Breath of the Wild sold Switch to me, not Mario Kart 8, and I know I’m not alone there.
My bigger problem with how they handled the exclusives within the presentation is that none of them received anything like a proper deep dive, even though these should be the system sellers were all getting hyped for.
I understand Mario Kart will be getting one in a couple of weeks, which is something, but considering how short the exclusives list was, it was a shame not to see a little more of each. Speaking subjectively, it felt to me like these big, important exclusives ended up getting less overall coverage in the presentation than the third-party lineup, all of which is or will be freely available (and likely much cheaper) elsewhere.
Overall, the problem is not one of content, but of emphasis. After all, third-party support and backwards compatibility is vital to the success of a modern console! But the decision to frontload the presentation with lukewarm demonstrations of the hardware, games which are also playable on Switch 1, and non-exclusives, while first-party and third-party exclusives received comparatively little emphasis and were often relegated to the tail end of the show, was baffling. It killed the momentum of the presentation, diluted the message that this is a must-have product, and dampened my enthusiasm quite a bit.
And yeah, I’m also sad that we only got 3 seconds of Silksong to confirm it still exists, but let’s face it, we did that to ourselves, didn’t we?

[blows a kiss out to sea] for the Mighty Nein pirates arc
#I'm!! I have so many thoughts about why this arc is SO GOOD#But the short version is like#It is an arc about Fjord and identity and power and self and agency as he faces the truth of his patron and faces a rival warlock#But it is ALSO about Fjord grappling with those things bc he is ALSO processing grief and sadness and a search for direction and purpose#and grappling with disappointing disillusionment in how the world and people in your life (including maybe yourself) isn't what you thought#and about coming to resolve he has the agency and strength to not allow these things to deter him from purpose and place in the world.#And—this is why this is a PHENOMENAL arc—so is the rest of the Nein. Individually and as a group.#All of them are grappling with feelings of grief and sadness and disappointment and directionlessness and helplessness#just the grand malaise and relentless shapelessness of what living often is#They also as individuals and as a group together also find that resolve and strength to carry on and find self and purpose and direction#They all begin to process the very same things in their own lives and in their shared experience as The Nein. Simultaneously and together.#It's an arc about Fjord and self and agency in the face of disappointment and grief and disillusionment.#It's an arc about the Nein—individually and as a whole—and self and agency in the face of disappointment and grief and disillusionment.#It's SUCH a strong arc bc ALL of them are taking the same internal journey—structured around Fjord's very externalized version of it.#And it's got incredible vibes (pirate warlocks of a leviathan!) and some GREAT set pieces. And every NPC in the arc is iconic as is Twiggy.#Anyway. In my feelings about this arc. I said this is the short version and yet.#Critical Role things#CR meta

*fully sweating bullets and thousand yard staring into space as the king of hearts starts to talk about losing the person you love and what you'd be willing to do to get them back* this better not be fUCKING thematic foreshadowing for what this story is meant to head towards eventually (I say, with little hope and great trepidation). we're just going to be thematically microdosing on that in the main krew right folks. no one's going to be lost forever. right??!?!
(though I must admit that the idea of some of them dying and being brough back because that is someone else's heart's desire -- because 'what would even be the point of being given anything else, if you aren't here with me' -- would render me fully incapable of being normal ever again and forever goodnight)

my other thing I like about DECT is that it’s a very friendly introduction to metafiction literature that isn’t just smarmy fourth wall breaking but also isn’t so intensely layered like house of leaves that someone completely unfamiliar with the concept couldn’t get it

even though they're made of pseudoskin stretched over titanium, with polyethylene feathers and rubber tendons, they're still my wings.
they're my wings because i made them, painstakingly, lovingly, with my own two hands. they're mine because i nurtured them from nonexistence to existence, hands steady on the welder, sewing together the seams and smoothing the joints. but for all that, i know they won't take me where i need to go.
the sky is not meant for people like me, not the way i'm dreaming of experiencing it with the wind in my hair and the sun on my face. i can read up all i please on the square-cube law's tyranny, the density of my bones, the thrust-weight ratio of the human frame - but still i dream of it.
even if i could feel my wings, that'd be enough. to spread them open slowly at first, shyly, until each feather stands out from the other. to show them to a lover, let them be preened and cared for, to wrap them around my beloved and keep them safe, to hear them whisper those two sacred words:
my angel.

Taking inspiration from nature, researchers from Princeton Engineering have improved crack resistance in concrete components by coupling architected designs with additive manufacturing processes and industrial robots that can precisely control materials deposition. In an article published Aug. 29 in the journal Nature Communications, researchers led by Reza Moini, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Princeton, describe how their designs increased resistance to cracking by as much as 63% compared to conventional cast concrete. The researchers were inspired by the double-helical structures that make up the scales of an ancient fish lineage called coelacanths. Moini said that nature often uses clever architecture to mutually increase material properties such as strength and fracture resistance.

tangle is so fun because she is a juxtaposition of something collected and contained with something loose and free and in motion
she’s a rough brawler but she has a stance and a style. she’s impulsive and thrillseeking, but she wraps her arms in sports tape to protect them, a precaution. she longs for adventure and action but she will always need to come to rest at home with friends. she’s bouncy and restless, but she’s an intent listener and considerate. she’s got months of off-and-on experience fighting badniks, but is still so new to real Adventure.
and while there’s plenty of traits sonic and tangle share, you can’t reduce her to ‘girl sonic’ without neglecting something of her own characterization. she fundamentally wants something different out of life than sonic does, because she doesn’t need to be anchorless; she isn’t a backpacker, sleeping somewhere new every night. she’s more like a goose, or a frigate bird; flying free for ages and ages, knowing she wants to go somewhere, until time comes to call her back to her origin.
#random rambling at midnight oclock#i love love love contrasting characters who are very similar but have important subtle distinctions#like sonic is very self-determined. he knows what he wants#tangle is not yet. shes chasing adventure because she knows thats how she’ll *find* what she wants#she chases whisper because she knows whisper is better with a friend around. but also because whisper is a gateway to adventure#she’ll even bind herself with structure and expectations if it means coming back to whisper#^ sonic didnt want to join the restoration even for amy. tangle stayed because jewel needed her even if she hated it#or even just because itd help jewel. jewel didnt necessarily need tangle - especially if tangle had the free time to cause Incidents#shes like. selfless for partially selfish reasons. she wants adventure so bad & helping ppl is an adventure#she obviously still cares about people and wants to help too. but still#shes also this mix of. very competent and frightening in ability & strength. but also never really put on a level with most of the main cas#extremely durable tail that can punch metal out + lengthen to any size or reach (at high speed too!!) + hulk loki toss people#plus above average ability/acrobatics + some durability cause she fell a ways in the portal tower arc finding sonic/amy/tails#but also. still not applied as much as she could be + often disadvantaged against characters like surge/mimic/guns#but like. she also was fighting off zombots for some period of time while getting 0% more infected; creatively using chairs & stools#i feel like being true to *that* tangle necessitates her having some sort of plan against surge if/when they clash again.#she DOES strategize even if it’s on the fly. and she does have a pretty good sense of where her own body is/isn’t Marinette clumsy#anyways. au where i rewrite tangle’s recent appearances in line with her characterization for the first ~30 issues#forever anytime i see tangle being characterized as a sonic fangirl im like ‘she wouldnt do that.’#she would ADMIRE sonic absolutely!! she would not Fangirl. they are different. issue 4 she was so chill abt meeting sonic#ive been awake too long….. goodnight

hrghhhh how would you even go about mending an felt and fabricked and metal based animatronic
#disco speaks!#I’m trying to use references cause like they wouldn’t be restored#but they would be cleaned up and repaired/replaced in some way??#like I’m thinking about springtrap btw#like maybe use rubber or a plastic shell (plastic would be prone to breaking) rubber might be too toxic to the actual decayed muscle#and general mummified tight skin/muscle underneath so maybe a silicone based sheet layer?#yeah silicone would make the most sense for that layer#and then having like sort of fire house material or hrmm like neoprene or Kevlar lining on top of that#for general protection#is the casing fully fused to him??#how the fuck does that work#cause with the other animatronics you are just welp child body decays in their and their soul is trapped#so eventually the body is decomposed and essentially no use to the interior and motor functions of the suit#however in springtrap’s case that is not the same#while it can perform on its own it’s meant to have a wearer in it to puppet the movements#so when his body dies does it fuse to just the endo inside??#BUT THERE IS NO ENDO INSIDE??#yeah cause wait#he is the endo of the suit#(skeleton inside a skeleton (skeletonception if you will))#there is supposedly bracing for the spring locks and the interior structure of the suit#I’m still baffled on how it would’ve stood up on its own ngl#I’ve made a puppet head with a metal strap to create the base and then used fabric and foam as a covering#but also that would abrasive I like the idea of the jumpsuit like the movie version has but again material would have been corroded by blood#and other organic fluids as a result of decomposition#like the stomach would have had leaking bile and so would most of the organs due to the punctures#and there is also bladder which becomes loose due to lack of muscle strength so those fluids would take effect#and then the jumpsuit would chafe skin and cause infection as well#well not really infection once deceased but like it wouldn’t help
