Davina McCall has been an energetic and enthusiastic presence on our TV screens for decades. As a teenager I loved watching her dating show Streetmate, and God's Gift which I adored. Then I was glued to the screen as she fronted Big Brother for 11 series between 2000 and 2010, and more recently she's presented ITV's emotional series Long Lost Family and of course the pure fun show The Masked Singer, which I did a couple of years ago and it is back again this month.
Davina and I spoke in November when I was just back from Australia so I might have been a little woolly but hopefully not too bad. We talked about her difficult start in life when her mum left home, but she expalined how she had two wonderful female role models in her life - her grandmother, Pippy, and her stepmum, Gabby. She told me about the joy of having three older children, two of whom have left home, but explained you still have to be available at the drop of a hat, when they need you - something I found strangely comforting.
We also spoke about her personal passion project - educating people about the menopause, which has seen her present two documentaries, and, along with Dr Naomi Potter, write a book called Menopausing, which has certainly helped take away any ignorance and fear I have about the subject. Finally we plotted to do something outrageous together one of these days... just to shock you, and our children! So, watch this space.

TV presenter Davina McCall is "recovering well" after undergoing surgery to remove a rare brain tumor called a colloid cyst. On her Instagram, her partner, Michael Douglas shared an encouraging post about her: "Update folks. Thanks so much to all the well-wishers. She really has made an enormous leap forward in the last 24 hours. She is out of ICU. She is 'loving awareness.' Thank you xx Michael.". The sincere message had an accompanying picture in bright pink: all caps, "massive relief to see some light breaking through." Four heart emojis accompanied the message. Douglas also thanked them all for the good support they have been getting: "Thanks for all the good vibes coming in from all angles. Up and up." Damien Everett, CC BY 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons This brought ripples of joy on social media among friends and celebrities. Actress Patsy Palmer, for example, sent a message "sending healing", while Dame Kelly Holmes simply commented "awesome news Michael" and Jools Oliver posted a succession of heart emojis. Sharing the news with her fans on Instagram last Friday, 57-year-old McCall said she was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. She referred to it as "very rare" and explained that it measured about 14mm and was necessary to remove to avoid complications if it kept on growing. Speaking candidly on a video before going into surgery, she explained, "It needed to come out because if it grows, it would be bad." She said that the surgical procedure, a craniotomy, would involve opening access to the tumor through the top of her head. But regardless of the pain and discomfort she was soon to face, she assured fans she was "in good spirits" and expected to spend about nine days in the hospital after surgery. Non-cancerous brain tumors like McCall's are said to be slow-growing but less likely to spread through the NHS but are still dangerous. Michael Douglas has been keeping fans of McCall updated on her condition during recovery. His post recently is the second update after the operation. Best known for hosting Big Brother from 2000 to 2010, McCall has had a busy television career. She began presenting for MTV in the mid-1990s before going on to present Channel 4's Streetmate and now presents the ITV dating show My Mum, Your Dad. Besides her broadcasting life, McCall has been a fervent campaigner for women's health and particularly on the subject of menopause. Her 2022 release of Menopausing greatly received acclaim and has won the Book of the Year prize at the British Book Awards. She presented the Channel 4 documentary Davina McCall: Sex, Mind And The Menopause, and also spoke about her own fight with perimenopausal symptoms. She once reported an episode where she thought she was suffering from a brain tumor or Alzheimer's since she could no longer multi-task. As a recognition of her efforts for broadcasting, McCall was nominated a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2023. A photo of the ceremony showing her beaming face as she is celebrating with her partner Michael Douglas and daughter Holly Robertson. Off the screen, McCall has been married twice and has three children—two daughters and a son—with her second husband, presenter Matthew Robertson. She has been living with Douglas since 2022, and the couple cohosts a lifestyle podcast, Making The Cut. Fans and friends of McCall continue to rally around her, wishing her all the best as she continues her road to recovery. Her honesty and strength have inspired so many people; within this update, there is certainly a sigh of relief from those reading her story. Read the full article

Los Campesinos!' first ever glockenspiel: charity auction
February 2nd, 2010
FIRST OFF…we are auctioning off Los Campesinos!’ first ever glockenspiel, to raise money for the relief effort in Haiti. At my time of writing, the auction ends in about 30 hours. If you would like to bid on the item, a piece of ROCK AND ROLL HISTORY, then you can do so, here:
Below is a piece I wrote about my ‘relationship’ with the glockenspiel, for our Drowned In Sound takeover week:
In the past three years of doing interviews I’ve constantly been amazed at how much interviewers seem to care about the fact some of our songs include a glockenspiel. Not just casual mentions but whole interviews centering around the thing, as if there’s actually anything interesting to be said about it.
The glockenspiel was an accident. I borrowed it from school one time to use in mine and Kim’s old band, and kind of forgot to ever return it. It wasn’t a deliberate steal, but I don’t feel too guilty about it as glockenspiels were ten a penny at my school. Thrust into the hand of any poor, uninterested child in compulsory music lessons, after they’d mastered Merrily We Roll Along on the recorder, and driven the teachers nuts by exhausting every preset rhythm track on the keyboards.
In the band’s formative stages our songs were either the ‘pop hits’ of yore (Death To Los Campesinos! (then catchily known as Track 1), Y! M! D!, Broken Heartbeats…) or these by numbers post-rock efforts we knocked up (I actually thought they were alright). Having no musical ability and enough common sense not to insist upon doing some spoken word whine about girls on top of these songs, I turned to the glock for something to do with my hands. And it stuck. I wish I just opted to use the opportunity to go to the bar.
It’s served us well. For better, for worse I think we’d be near the top of any list of “bands what use a glock”, and I’m sure it’s a buzz word that piqued a few peoples’ interest in us, but it’s become the bane of my existence. I look around onstage and see my friends thrashing at guitars, or hitting the shit out of drums, or even masterfully taming a violin, and then I look to the end of my arm and see myself clutching at this dainty beater, and as I do so I physically feel my testosterone levels decline.
Y’see, I KNOW that nobody looks at somebody playing a glockenspiel and thinks “He’s cool, I want to be like him”. They more likely think “he wets the bed”. Nobody’s ever got laid off the back of playing the glockenspiel, and let’s face it, that’s the whole reason people start bands in the first place. It would almost be worth it if I could play it well, but I play glock in the same way Richie Edwards played the guitar. I’m mostly just coasting along thanks to my good looks.
People have come up to me after gigs (some of them GROWN ADULTS) and said that they’ve bought a glockenspiel (actually, they usually say “xylophone”, but I know what they mean) off the back of liking our band. I feel awful. It’s like how Davina McCall would feel if someone came up to her and said “I loved you in Streetmate so I started taking smack”.
And so, it’s with a heart full of helium that I’m auctioning off Los Campesinos!’ first ever glockenspiel. This piece of crap was used on our initial demos, the Sticking Fingers Into Sockets EP, and on Hold On Now, Youngster . It’s travelled all over the world, had numerous pints of beer spilt over it and always been treated with a firm but sensual hand, emasculating me time after time. All money made from the sale of the thing will be donated to the relief effort in Haiti, so if you’d like to own it (and I know that YOU obviously don’t), please bid far more than it’s actually worth.

Streetmate’s back on Channel 4
Streetmate had a quick return to Channel 4, with Scarlett Moffatt at the helm.
It's still light and frothy, Scarlett steps into the host's role with vigour. Would like to see more.

👀 dr. lestrange : D
a c c e p t i n g ➟ send 👀 for a drabble of the first time my muse saw yours
rodolphus . // @knowshisown
To say that this was the first time she’d seen Dr. Lestrange would actually be a lie. Some eight years ago it had been nigh impossible to turn on a television screen or take a glance at the front pages of the papers without seeing his dark eyes staring back into your soul. Of course, she’d been much younger then, no longer a little girl frightened by the things that lurked in the dark but not quite woman enough to find him as handsome or as luridly enticing as some of her teachers and neighbors ( the self-ascribed spinsters and starving wives in loveless marriages ) had. If anything, she remembered his voice best. She’d sat through the entire televised trial, just waiting for him to talk.
Nimue had also seen his face in the pages of her textbooks and littered about campus here and there. Director Merlin liked to hang up newspaper clippings, various medallions, and endless accolades from his past exploits like hunting trophies. To the new initiates, they were something to aspire to; to the tried and true; they were something to pass by without a second thought. They were a lot like the withering hero in that way.
On the car ride over, his picture had stared up at her from the seat of the passenger’s side along with the endless papers that made up his case file. Occasionally, the blonde had found the time or the reason to glance over at it. There were other photos too, of course. His exploits. His victims. Merlin had made sure to stock her with enough none too subtle reassurances that Dr. Lestrange was a dangerous man whom she was meant to fear and despise. This was something that Dr. Fletcher had also made certain to do upon her arrival at the asylum, endowed with his endless polaroids and grainy camera footage of past violences committed by the subject of her visit.
A frightened girl is one that listens to her elders. Perhaps they were hoping that with any luck she’d take to leaning on the shoulders of slavering old men in an attempt to shield her eyes from the boogeyman. ( Little did either of them know, Nimue had been the type of little girl that kept her closet open and stared down the shadows until the rising dawn. )
She breathes deeply, heels clicking on the damp stone floor of the basement as keeps to the right side of the long hall like she’s been told. Frightened isn’t quite the word for what the young trainee is feeling, but apprehensive is likely as close an explanation to the actual emotion that she can get. Surely there’s something inhumane about keeping anyone - no matter their crimes - locked away down here? There are no windows, no light. She longs for a breeze but feels only the chill of being belowground and hears the faint dripping of ancient, rusted pipes.
If one of them were to suddenly burst, would anyone come down here and save them?
Their eyes meet at precisely the same time; his following her until the clicking has stopped and she stands parallel to the doctor on freedom’s side of the great glass wall. Silence settles in the air about them for a short time, gazes intent and appraising of one another for reasons that neither knows for certain and both can only glean from imperceptible flashes of acknowledgment.
It occurs to her that the old film footage and news clippings never could have done him any sort of justice. There are nuances and character to Rodolphus Lestranges’ face that the technology of a bygone era never could have hoped to capture. He is handsome, she belatedly acknowledges to the schoolmarms and sex-starved streetmates of her young adolescence, but it’s a passing and untroubled thought, easily flitted away.
No, she is more curious to know if his voice is how she remembers it. Nimue has always had a musical ear.
❝ Dr. Lestrange, my name is Nimue du Lac. ❞ She offers up her name like an entree, served with an intentional shuffle towards the glass ( there would be no handshakes for them ) and her most endearingly nervous grin. ❝ Do you mind if I speak with you? ❞

AU where Louis goes on the dating show Streetmate where he walks through the streets of the Doncaster and points out boys he fancies and Scarlett Moffatt chases them down on the street to see if they want to go on a date. But as soon as Louis meets up with Scarlett, he notices the tall, attractive sound guy who has emerald green eyes and petal pink lips. So they start filming, walking down the Donny high street, and Louis tries to notice the boys around him, but he just keeps getting distracted by Harry. Scarlett will point out a guy, and even if he's Louis' type, Louis will shoot down the option, because compared to Harry, he just doesn't fancy him. During a break in filming, Harry notices that Louis seems cold since it's such an overcast day so he offers Louis his jacket and lets Louis cuddle into his side. They flirt a bit, and Louis teases Harry just to see his cheeks go pink because it makes Louis' stomach swoop every time. They start filming again and Louis tries to notice the boys around him, but it soon becomes obvious to everyone in the crew that Louis isn't going to pick anyone since he only has eyes for Harry. So Scarlett steps in as wingwoman and asks Louis and Harry if they want to go on a date together and of course they say yes. And then they go on the date and have such an amazing time and hit it off so well and eventually become boyfriends and fall in love and live happily ever after.
#yes I watched an episode where this very thing happened and it inspired me#because how damn cute would this be???#au#hl#my writing#drabble#sorta
