I'm going to jump on the streaming vs physical media debate for a minute here.
I hate streaming services. Never had one, don't want one. But they aren't going to go away. I like DVDs. Love them. Being able to watch them as many times as you want after paying for it once is great.
I'm not for these companies making even more money, but streaming services are kind of missing out on more profit by not putting their shows and movies on DVD. They could make a whole lot more money off those of us who don't want/can't afford/etc. to have a streaming service and want to watch a particular show. A one time price that is about the same amount for the time you would be on the service just to watch that show (1-2 months for a season) is not costing the company money in the scope of things. I think it would bring in more money, but the more important thing is, it would help all of us who just want to watch ONE show on the service. It would also prevent movies and shows from being lost when the service makes it disappear, ignoring everyone's hard work on it.

ok so here’s the situation. so i saw a tiktok the other day that showed the scene in catching fire where they enter the arena, and the aspect ratio changes, and i watched that and was like huh that’s weird i never noticed that all the times i’ve watched that movie? and i just watched that movie again literally just now. and i can tell you with 100% certainty that the aspect ratio did not change at all. so who is lying is my question. what is going on.
#is it different on streaming vs a dvd? cuz i have the dvd#idk why they would have different versions of a movie for an aspect ratio change tho#was it edited for streaming? does anyone know.

This is the very real reason why streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Paramount+, etc. are raising their prices for the subscriptions.
DVDs are no longer selling.
That's the reality.
Streaming services are far more convenient.
People are more willing to pay over $100/month for multiple streaming services to get ready-to-watch shows and movies, than a one-time pay of $10-$40+ for the solid dvds for movies and shows.
That is a fact. And it is a fact that the business side of the entertainment industry is aware of.
Physical movies and shows are dying.
There's a reason why you only see Red Box as the physical means for limited renting.
There's a reason Hollywood Videos and Blockbuster closed, except for very rare, limited areas.
There's a reason Netflix stopped their physical DVDs section for renting/buying
When the convenience of streaming became the ultimate convenience, the businesses caught on.
Streaming was only meant to be a convenience. Not the norm.
But it is now the norm. Physical copies are becoming less and less.
This is our reality, and it isn't going to get better.
And just like it isn't going to get better, the risk taking stories are going to be even rarer. Original ideas are going to be set aside for something more safe guarded. Because it's business.
If you want something original, you will have to actively find it. Follow it. Keep the updates. And actively find your community. It is going to be an underground thing, because it won't be broadcasted.
This is the reality today. And it's only going to grow more within the reality.
If you don't want this reality, it's kind of too late--but if you want to slow it down:
Buy DVDs and encourage your friends and family to buy DVDs.
#auntie jen speaks#the business side of entertainment#I have a official and streaming copy of every show and movie I own#yes I buy them twice#because if I love it enough to buy it on streaming they deserve my money for the physical copy too#sometimes I but them the times to get collector/director cut editions on DVDs#those show sales more on physical copies vs digital--because way more money goes into making the physical copy#you want better movies and more risk taking scripts?#buy the DVDs

Considering all the viral attention given to Drew Carey over his support of striking writers, it kind of sucks that The Drew Carey Show isn't streaming anywhere, except the first season
In fact, only the first season was ever released on DVD, too, due to music rights. Which sucks bc if you never saw it, or don't remember it, The Drew Carey Show was not some Home Improvement esque stand-up sitcom hackjob. It was a proto-Community prone to surreal gimmicks and wacky special episodes. These included "spot the mistakes!" episodes and improvisational crossovers with Whose Line, but also "after an office prank, Drew wakes up in China" (filmed on location in China), "Rocky Horror vs Priscilla Queen of the Desert drag danceoff musical number", and "the gang descends into a science lab to save a dog & come across mutants and strange experiments". It seemed weirder than something like Community though bc it was rooted so heavily in mundane 90s blue collar workcom aesthetics, then it would reveal the guy-of-the-week the female lead was dating was literally the Devil
Anyway the only way to watch anything but the first season is piracy, and likely always will be. Fun!

it’s extremely fucking sad that we don’t use dvds anymore. you used to be able to bring a movie to a friends house. now you have to pray some streaming service has it AND you need decent internet AND it could have ads or cost money to rent. can we please bring back dvd players im begging so hard

anyway did you know that someone uploaded the tv-n subs for toqger on archive.org
it has all the episodes, plus the gaim crossover episode that’s supposed to be watched sometime early on. the gaim crossover can be skipped, there’s like one (1) funny scene that got big on tumblr so just look at that post and that’s all you need. it does *not* have the films or specials, but this upload does
Galaxy Line SOS, listed as ‘Ressha Sentai Toqger Movie’: takes place between eps 20 and 21, it’s a cute and fun movie :)
Farewell, Ticket! The Wasteland Super ToQ Battle!!, listed as ‘Ressha Sentai Toqger Special DVD’: takes place between ep 26 and 27 and is MANDATORY
ToQger vs. Kyoryuger, listed basically as-is: takes place between ep 35 and 36, a character from Galaxy Line S.O.S comes back for a cameo, also a cute and fun movie
Ninninger vs. ToQger - post-series, I don’t remember this one and it’s not on the playlist so it’s probably not important
They Went and Came Back Again Ressha Sentai ToQGer: Super ToQ 7gou of Dreams, listed as ‘Ressha Sentai Toqger Returns’: post series, also pretty mandatory
as for ‘why toei’s baby train toy commercial is worth watching’:
It’s written for children in an intelligent way, there are a lot of lessons that I thought were delivered kindly and conscientiously
It’s written intelligently in general, both the heroes and the villains have goals with a lot of room for interesting progression; the heroes start with trying to regain their memories, the villains start with trying to resurrect the emperor of darkness, and both storylines are balanced really well. Some of those twists and developments Got Me
It’s mostly lighthearted, very sincere, and some of the emotional beats are really devastating… episode 32 does make me tear up every watch
The fight choreography is fun! Since the theme is imagination, they can get pretty goofy/playful in some eps
One of the gimmicks is that the sentai team can switch colors, which means while it has a traditionally structured sentai team—male red, 2 girls and 3 guys—there are times where the gals are red and the guys are pink, and I like that :)
The villain aesthetics

from where do you read the manga?
I know this is not what you asked for, but here’s a masterlist of bsd resources I’ve used over the past year. Because every time I join a new fandom I always think “oh, I sure wish there was an all-inclusive masterlist that explained in detail how the material is divided and where to access to it instead of having to dig in myself”. So, this is for you January 2022 Kyotag, and for anyone else who might find this useful! I trust posting this on Tumblr is safe, but please do not share this outside of Tumblr in any way; it’s not for me, it’s for all the people who care to share. Specifically, do not share this on Twitter in any way or form. I will unleash a wild pre-promise Akutagawa after you if you do.
Edit: My biggest thank you to @amythedemisimp, who helped me expand and enrich this list. For your priceless contribution, thank you so much!!! Edit 2: Thank you so much u/barnacleunderthesea for reaching out and sharing new stage play subtitles!!! Check out their BSD English Content Archive here.

Bungou Stray Dogs Story by Kafka Asagiri, art by Sango Harukawa. The original manga. Ongoing, monthly chapter release.
• MONTHLY CHAPTER FANTRANSLATIONS: translator 1 • Website 1: Official English translation of the manga up to volume 19 / chapter 83 (including all the extra volume contents and omakes) and fantranslations from chapter 84 upwards. It’s my favorite streaming platform for the manga as it grants easy access and download to most of the official translation (the quality is not the best, a sligthly blurry 900×1350px per page, but it is what it is). When visitng on mobile, there’s surges of adds on certain days for some reason, but overall it’s manageable. • Website 2: Official translation up to volume 20 (chapter 88), fantranslations after that. • Website 3: Official translation up to volume 23 (chapter 104), fantranslations after that. Lacks all the additional volumes content (and thus the first page of every volume since it’s in colour). Includes the Japanese raws up to chapter 104, so it’s useful if you need to quickly check the original. Denies download of the pages, and features a watermark. • Website 4: All the chapters fantraslated. Recommending it because it’s always nice to read different translations (and endearing too, at times. You wouldn’t want to miss “Dazai Osamu – Ability: Human Failure”), and because it’s for some reason the only website my university’s wi-fi allows me the access to, so shout-out to it. • Website 5: Raws from chapter 79 up to date. The image quality (1164×1618px) is generally better than the official manga English release.

What's wrong with shout's sentai subs?
So even putting aside how they straight up stole both the subs used for Dekaranger and the subs used for Ohranger, Shout's official Sentai subs are simply very subpar and very stiff.
Personally speaking, Shout almost had me dropping Carranger before I switched to the fansubs halfway through and immediately started having a much better time. This is because Shout's subs are not technically wrong, but are far too direct; failing to take into account character and accents and tone in a way that's really bad for a show as comedic as Carranger -- and honestly, Sentai as a whole.
For example:-
The fansubs (from Harorangers) are on the left, while the official subs are on the right. What stands out here is how the fansubs give a voice to the particular characters -- Blue Racer is the smart guy of the team and so the show has him speak with longer words and more 'intelligent' phrasing most of the time, which is funny in the context of quipping back in a heated battle. Green Racer is a country boy whose accent sometimes slips through when he's heated up enough, as a funny contrast to how he's otherwise (attempting to be) a smooth-talking salesman. Both of these character traits are rendered invisible in Shout's official translations of their lines, instead going for much more generic statements that could have been said by any character.
Dapp's catchphrase - he apends his own name 'dapp' to a lot of adjectives and verbs - is entirely missing, as is the tone he's going for. Even the grammar seems to be off in this example.
This also showcases another aspect of fansubs vs official -- Harorangers translated the enemy gang, 'Bowzock'; as 'Bykergang', while the official subs leave it as is. Of course as many Warring Driver-wearing Ornacs would have you know, it's best to just leave names untranslated most of the time; but in this case the point of the name Bowzock is the humour in taking the name for a biker gang and turning it into a villain organization name, which the fansubs get across perfectly.
Signalman's voice is much more distinct here; as an uptight officer it is fitting he'd say he wants to "stamp out" a criminal organization that just the generic term 'destroy' doesn't get across.
These examples are all from the exact same episode, and the reason I have them all is that this is the episode I switched over to the fansubs on; and the difference was immediate and I was having a far far better time! Harorangers' subs simply do a great job at conveying the humour of the show overall where the official subs completely fail.
Obviously this is a more extreme example, as Carranger is a self-parody and a much more heightened comedy than even other Super Sentai shows -- any flaws I've highlighted here are much more damning when it comes to something you're supposed to find funny.
So for another example...
Now this one isn't bad per se to be clear (and they do say the whole team name in Shout's subs i just left out their saying it for mirroring), but the Hurricanegers' roll call is meant to be a stage play. It's meant to use heightened, striking phrases and the 'Asanjou!' at the end is in context of them being on stage! So the fansubs (from SS this time) yet again get across the meaning far better.
If you're flicking through these images btw, you'll also start to see that whatever masters Shout used are lower quality; and for some reason their subtitled are rendered weirdly pixel-y? So there's a few visual issues too.
If Shout is your only way to watch these I can't tell you no -- partly because it is an accessibility thing! Shout means that all of Fiveman through Dekaranger are just fully available to watch on streaming on Tubi and Tokushoutsu and Poob and whatever at the flick of a button instantly, and their versions are also the only ones you can buy and own a physical DVD of. But their translations are very lacking compared to the fansubs and sometimes even stolen to the degree that I beg if you have the option, just torrent the fansubs; those versions will give you a much better viewing experience. ... you'll also need to anyway if you're interested in any movies and specials, as Shout only subs the episodes.
I feel this is likely just a result of how fast they have to pump these out -- if you didn't know their Sentai shows released about 2-3 months apart while they were still doing them, and that's a fucking insane schedule for 50-episode shows that it's not hard to imagine their quality would be hit. When Discotek said they were doing Toku they acknowledged it would take a long time to get us so many of the shows they'd licensed because these are very long shows and hence it takes time to do subs for them, which is reasonable to expect!
I imagine this is also why subs for Kuuga and Ryuki and such turned out so much better, due to the infamously long amount of time it takes Shout to do a new Kamen Rider show. This also makes me wonder if Zyuranger (the first Sentai they did) and Fiveman (the first Sentai they did after a long hiatus) might be better than what I've shown here, I'll have to check sometime. I just wish a company like Discotek would be given the Sentai license or that at least if Shout does carry on with Magiranger and Turboranger and what have you, they get given much much more time to work on them; because these shows deserve so much better than this.

Re: IWTV vs Trump (not that a show is the most important issue, but since some of us are worried) I think, if the US genuinely becomes that hostile to free creative expression, high-budget production companies with the means to do so will relocate to countries like Canada, the UK, South Africa, Australia or NZ. Distributors like Amazon, Netflix & Co. already have branches outside the US, so they could continue to stream these shows. Surely queer content will receive a higher rating in the US so that it becomes less accessible to minors, but it would still exist. I'm convinced IWTV will continue to be produced.
I do hope so.
It depends on the legislation and … the options (money-wise) the company has - and what kind of, let‘s call it…. spine. What it is about.
A lot of people will fold under pressure. A lot of companies will, too.
Let‘s just… hope, and as I said: if you can make it lucratrive for AMC to produce it. Stream it, buy their stuff. Stop the stupid infighting and make the fandom something that AMC can build on.
And, while we‘re on it: get DVDs/BluRays!!
I‘m serious.
And I hope I‘m wrong but I‘m hitting 50 rather sooner than later and my faith has taken a lot of hits lately.

I feel like older and younger mash fans have such opposing opinions about so much stuff in the show. Like take the experimental episodes thing. Older mash fans who watched the show as it aired probably are more likely to dislike those eps because they break the formula and you'd have to wait a week to get a normal episode to enjoy. But newer fans might see them for the first time with vhs/dvd/digital copies or streaming services, so if they wouldn't have to wait to get back to form and could just enjoy the experimental episodes for what they are, while having a little break from the formula which helps keep a binge-watching session more interesting.
I feel similarly about the clash people have about trapper vs bj. A lot of older mash fans prefer trapper and hate bj, because it's really hard to make an audience like someone replacing a main character you've grown to expect and enjoy. I think newer fans are more likely to like or prefer bj because they have the hindsight that the show lasts for 11 seasons, they know they'll be seeing more of bj than of trapper. I guess bj also kind of represents a tonal shift in the show - where trapper's angle was the streetwise class clown who has been around the block in a show that was mostly comedy focused, bj's story is that of a young fresh-faced suburbanite facing the worst the world has to offer. For an audience who watched mash as it came out, this tonal shift was jarring, but it seems more gradual to an audience who starts with access to the whole scope of the show.

Well as you can imagine, the David Jenkins IG is the big news of today. The clowning forecast has gone up significantly. Dad posted one of the late-blooming SaveOFMD banners in NY and attached Elton John - Candle In The Wind to the post. This song has some very specific significance to our fandom.
Apparently back when we lost Lucius in Season 1, Chaos Dad posted this song to Nathan Foad. Src @cptn_brightsky's Twitter Post
Now ADD to that... David Jenkins ALSO added this picture of Matthew Maher standing in front of a saveOFMD flyer found out on the street.
NOW OF COURSE, we are all clowning, but I think as usual Chaos Dad is trying to give us info without giving us info since the fandom pays so much attention to every little detail.
@saltpepperbeard has a theory that I'm down to clown with until I turn blue in the face. Src.
So yeah, as always take the clowning how you will, but I'll be honest, this looks like great news to me. It really does. CLOWN ON MY FRIENDS.

Rhys Darby's going to be at The Bourbon Room Hollywood next Friday, 2/16 at 8 PM PT.

Since doing cute stuff just doesn't stop in the Darby houshold, tonight I wanted to make a special shout out to Rosie Carnahan Darby, Rhys' Wife who has been active the last couple days. First and foremost, she knit a little blanket and hat for Samba's baby!
Second apparently she's restocked the Awesomeness Comedy website with more Buttons McGinty books and Comedy Special DVD's in case you're interested.
Oh and by the way, Samba loves the blanket:

Tonight Vico was out performing with Them Fatale Drag Kings at their last night at their home bar Redline! Just some shots from their IG stories, feel free to check out more.

Gentle reminder luvs, if you're going to IG, or Twitter to troll Max posts, let's try to remember not to post OFMD/Negative comments on any posts that are celebrating underrepresented groups. We want to support those groups. Please note however, if you'd done it previously and didn't know, don't beat yourself up! We all make mistakes, just please try to keep it in mind going forward! (If you can delete your previous posts, great, if not, again not the end of the world).

Why Deleting and Destroying Finished Movies Like Coyote vs Acme Should Be a Crime
This article is from yesterday but this blurb was pretty damn specific so I wanted to make sure if you missed it you got to see some of the reasons why Max did cancel OFMD.
"Some of the company’s tactics post-merger were garden-variety ruthless, like eliminating 87 series from its streaming platform Max, so that they won’t have to pay union-mandated residuals to the talent that created already-existing programs or pony up funds to produce more seasons of existing ones (such as “Our Flag Means Death,” one of the company’s most popular and critically acclaimed comedies—canceled after just two seasons)."

Since it was a lot of pictures I made a separate post so you can see the whole story: @adoptourcrew Choose Your Own Adventure here on tumblr. Please check it out!
== Love Notes ==
Alrighty lovelies. It's been another busy day. Lots of clowning, lots of hope, lots of emotional roller coasters. I hope you had a good time and generally it was more positive than negative. I have a lot I want to say, but my brain is still pretty foggy. So I'll make this short.
Sometimes when things go well, our brain gets excited and then they overcompensate when we calm down. It starts to think a lot more negatively because it had so much extra dopamine for a time. When that happens, little things can be really devastating. I just want you to remember that we all make mistakes and YOU, you beautiful imperfect being are not your mistakes. They hurt, and we learn from them, but they don't define us. Try not to listen to your brain if it's telling you otherwise. You are so very wonderful.
Anyway, I hope that makes sense.
Here's a picture I found today I thought really applied to all you wonderful people. Thank you to all the folks who reached out to me and checked in and sent me love when you knew I was struggling (there are too many to list and I don't know if you want to be tagged so please just know how much I appreciate you). I love you all so much, and I'm so lucky to how found people who make me feel like it's ok to be me.

No one has a right to destroy art.
Not even the people that "own" it. Because we don't own the art we make. We own a temporary patent on that work. Culture belongs to everyone, and the only reason IP exists is to encourage the production of cultural artifacts by making it a viable income stream.
So when it comes to things like the Batgirl movie, or Coyote Vs ACME, or the Micronauts cartoon, or the Capcom Alien Vs Predator beat-em-up, or any other piece of media that is destroyed or made unavailable due to rights issues or because it's being sacrificed for a tax break, there should be protections for that work.
Either a national database must be maintained to hold those works until their public domain dates are reached (a project that would at this point span a century) or, a much simpler correction should be applied.
If the law says it can't be made available for profit, it becomes public domain.
You write off your movie as a tax break? Fine, that movie is available for anyone to enjoy, remix or alter for free.
You can't work out a deal between the film company and the game company to keep the classic video game available? You're both willing to chop the baby in half rather than let the other one have it? King Solomon says the baby belongs to everyone.
And to close the loophole for companies employing more than X number of people, if you can't buy it, or stream it, then you can't enforce copyright on it. There's no excuse for any major media company not to have its entire catalog available to the public at least as a burned-DVD-on-request system.
These companies want to sit on piles of culture like dragons and reap the rewards. In the case of the oldest and largest, in many cases they claim ownership over what can only be called our modern folklore. The idea that a company can own Batman should be as insane as the idea of a company owning Hercules, Paul Bunyan or the Archangel Michael.
But if that isn't going to be insane, if we're going to give that kind of power to corporations, that power should come with responsibilities.

There's an old black train a-coming Scrapin' 'long the iron You don't need no ticket, boys It'll take you when it's time
...
It's been five years since the animated series Infinity Train debuted, and it's been three since it was canceled. Not only has the studio, HBO Max, not renewed it for a fifth season on the flimsy basis that the series' stories and themes were too dark and unappealing to children, but has also removed Infinity Train from its streaming service and digital purchase platforms.
Despite the unjust treatment this show has been saddled with, we can still celebrate Infinity Train and all it accomplished. For people reading this that haven't seen it yet, each season (or "book") follows a different protagonist navigating a seemingly endless, magical train, where each car is its own unique world, challenging passengers with puzzles and personal revelations. This setup allows the show to explore complex themes like identity, trauma, guilt, and forgiveness. The series excels in character development and often presents morally complex figures who grow in surprising ways. It's considered a rare gem in animation and highly regarded for its mature portrayal of emotional hardship. The series' vibe is similar to Over the Garden Wall, Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, and The Mitchells vs. the Machines. For fans of this, I highly recommend this show.
If you would like to legally support Infinity Train and its creator, Owen Dennis, Book 1 & Book 2 are separately available on DVD. If you would like to see all four books, they can be purchased individually on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, iTunes, Sky TV Apple TV, Vudu, Now TV, and Google Play. Please always consider these options before piracy. There's a better chance of this series coming back in some shape or form if we focus on boosting official views.
If you can't afford to purchase Infinity Train officially, or if you live in an area where the show isn't available to you, there's a Google Drive of the entire series available. There's also another Google Drive available for all of the archived bonus features of the show, like the official pilot and videos of Owen Dennis' commentary.
Thank you, everybody, for checking this post out. I'm planning on doing something like this every year on the first of November just to remind everyone that this show still exists. Please share this around and consider participating in this trend; Infinity Train deserves to be remembered.
