anyway did you know that someone uploaded the tv-n subs for toqger on archive.org
it has all the episodes, plus the gaim crossover episode that’s supposed to be watched sometime early on. the gaim crossover can be skipped, there’s like one (1) funny scene that got big on tumblr so just look at that post and that’s all you need. it does *not* have the films or specials, but this upload does
Galaxy Line SOS, listed as ‘Ressha Sentai Toqger Movie’: takes place between eps 20 and 21, it’s a cute and fun movie :)
Farewell, Ticket! The Wasteland Super ToQ Battle!!, listed as ‘Ressha Sentai Toqger Special DVD’: takes place between ep 26 and 27 and is MANDATORY
ToQger vs. Kyoryuger, listed basically as-is: takes place between ep 35 and 36, a character from Galaxy Line S.O.S comes back for a cameo, also a cute and fun movie
Ninninger vs. ToQger - post-series, I don’t remember this one and it’s not on the playlist so it’s probably not important
They Went and Came Back Again Ressha Sentai ToQGer: Super ToQ 7gou of Dreams, listed as ‘Ressha Sentai Toqger Returns’: post series, also pretty mandatory
as for ‘why toei’s baby train toy commercial is worth watching’:
It’s written for children in an intelligent way, there are a lot of lessons that I thought were delivered kindly and conscientiously
It’s written intelligently in general, both the heroes and the villains have goals with a lot of room for interesting progression; the heroes start with trying to regain their memories, the villains start with trying to resurrect the emperor of darkness, and both storylines are balanced really well. Some of those twists and developments Got Me
It’s mostly lighthearted, very sincere, and some of the emotional beats are really devastating… episode 32 does make me tear up every watch
The fight choreography is fun! Since the theme is imagination, they can get pretty goofy/playful in some eps
One of the gimmicks is that the sentai team can switch colors, which means while it has a traditionally structured sentai team—male red, 2 girls and 3 guys—there are times where the gals are red and the guys are pink, and I like that :)
The villain aesthetics

what're, like, your sentai recs? i've mostly gotten recommended carranger, kiramager (or was it magiranger?), and eiher changeman or flashman, and the only series i've SEEN is Donbrothers. which. uh. help
I'm actually not as versed in sentai, which I am gradually changing but 50 ep series are very long. my absolutely top pick much watch shows are:
Ressha Sentai ToQger: REALLY LOVE THIS SERIES!!! SUPER FUN DYNAMIC OF CHILDHOOD FRIENDS!!!! THE 6TH RANGER IS MY FAVE OF ALL TIME!!!!!! GENUINELY COMPELLING OVERARCHING PLOT WITH VERY WELL-PACED DEVELOPMENTS!!!!! THE VILLAIN POLITICS ARE REALLY INTERESTING AND THERE ARE A LOT OF VIBES!!!!!!! THE AESTHETIC IS REALLY GOOD!!!!!!!! MADAME NOIR IS THERE!!!!!!!!! MISS KOBAYASHI WROTE IT!!!!!!!!!! genuinely while watching the show there's a lot of moments where I go. wow. I'm glad kids watched this, there's a very positive message that's delivered in a gentle, kind, and entertaining way.
Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger: super fun. SUPER fun. all of the characters are lovable dumbasses in varying and overlapping flavors. everyone has super strong Just Some Guy energy and it's really interesting to have the majority of the sentai team be suit actors. I think one of the staff said something to the effect of the zenkaiger team being basically a team of losers and they are and it's very endearing. I also really like the writing here, not only is it REALLY funny, there's a lot of good drama with family stuff and one of the antagonists accidentally adopting himself to the main character's grandma, and the space pirates are also there being a nuisance. in general there's a really good variety of dynamics. Miss Komura is the lead writer if I remember right.
I'm in the middle of watching kaizoku sentai gokaiger right now, which is really entertaining. miss komura described the pirates in zenkai as 'pirates playing at being heroes' and the gokais as 'heroes playing at being pirates' and she's so right. the gokais are all like heh!!! we're pirates!!! we don't care about anyone but ourselves!!! and then they go and do stuff like pawn their jewelry so they can pay for meals at a restaurant
#ask#freezing kaiju#kszlb#rstlb#ksglb#orlbs#I watched lupat. the characters are endearing but the writing is a little unsatisfying#I got through a chunk of kyurangers but the cast started getting so big I got lost and fell off#watched some of kiramei and at some point I'm planning on getting back into it#but from the outset there wasn't a character that grabbed my by the throat#watched a big chunk of shinken which is really good#but me and a friend fell off in the 30s WHOOPS so at some point we might get back into it#ryusoul didn't grab me and had only one gal which pissed me off. so did zenkai but at least there were robots#I really want to watch kobayashi's other shows at some point and I *think* sundry rec'd bouken to me

i've recently started watching kamen rider (your influence) and i'm having fun with it but. i'm wondering. what is super sentai + would you rec it ?
aaayyyy I'm glad you're enjoying rider! Beloved.
like kamen rider, super sentai is also a toei tokusatsu franchise. unlike kamen rider, it's team-oriented and geared towards a (slightly?) younger audience. it's what power ranger's based off and where the fight footage comes from, though I'm not as familiar about the process.
the basic structure of a sentai is that it's a team, the leader is usually the red ranger, and another ranger from outside the core group gets added sometime between eps 10-20 (the sixth ranger) (or whatever the core group is +1). red, blue, and green rangers are usually dudes, yellow and pink rangers are usually gals. that said, there's of course a bunch of shows that mess around with the structure, e.g. lupinranger vs patoranger has two teams of three that face against each other, ryusoulger has a core group of 3, kyuuranger has like fifty billion rangers, sometimes the core group is 4 guys and 1 gal (>:|). most of my frame of reference is for recent sentai, though, sentai really isn't my area of expertise. like at all.
sentai's the franchise to go to for fun characters and group dynamics. there's a bunch of good series, but it's usually harder for sentai to grab me than kamen rider. I think it's mostly because I started off with ressha sentai toqger which is one of my all time favorite shows and it's a hard one to follow (lol??). I very strongly recommend ressha sentai toqger for the following reasons:
very well structured overall plot; each of the major reveals carry the episodic structure forward, it's got good pacing & momentum
extremely good intragroup dynamics; I like how each duo in the team gets a little bit of focus!
the sixth ranger is perfect. and I love him.
really good and compelling villain politics, it's actually a really fun contrast having the rainbow friendship rangers working together while, at any given time, there are at *least* three different folks on the villain side ready stab the others in the back (sometimes more)
related, there's a lot of genuinely emotionally compelling conflict on the villain side? I actually really like the emperor's relationship with his fiance, not in a ship way at all just in a 'complicated beginning, complicated end' kind of way. There's Parallels There's Foils
madame noir has the perfect design. and I love her.
this is like... peak For Kids writing in a way that I really enjoy? I wouldn't call it subtle, but certain lessons in the show are handled really... compassionately and thoughtfully in a way that's plainly for kids to digest, just stuff like 'what do you do when a friend is mad at you' and 'how can you keep being motivated after failing to accomplish something' without necessarily Sticking Out as A Lesson. it's like, watching it feels very 'wow.. I'm glad kids are getting this message :)'
right now, the only warnings I can think of is that around episode 20 there's crossdressing as a gag, the emperor of darkness is has like two lines that are kind of skeevy towards his fiance and her mother (but I don't consider it, like, out of the bounds of a kid's show villain), and there's two episodes where a one-off character expresses romantic interest towards one of the main cast which is kind of uncomfortable with additional context.
ANYWAY, the other super sentai I'd strongly recommend would be kikai sentai zenkaiger, for the following reasons:
it is so fucking funny
