Re-watching Lizzie Mcguire: Episode 1.2 (Picture Day)

Fashion Crisis

How cute are their phone sets?

- Lizzie is struggling to choose a good outfit for her middle school picture day. She consults with Miranda on the phone whilst ignoring Gordo’s request to help him find his hacky sack, which he had left in her room.

- In her conversation with Miranda, we get pop culture references to Shania Twain, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Gwyneth Paltrow and the great Britney Spears within the first couple of minutes of this episode.

- Did Matt just say, “Man, she’s hot!” in reference to Britney? Lol.

I don’t think this sweater is that ugly but I wouldn’t want to wear it either

- Her parents, Sam and Jo Mcguire wants Lizzie to wear the dreaded red unicorn sweater that was given to her by her grandma, Gammy (is that how you spell it?) Mcguire.

- Absolutely (Story of a Girl) by Nine Days was such a teen bop back then. I live for musical moments like this.

B Plot: Matt’s Sick

- Our boy Matt pretends to be sick to avoid going to school by using the heat radiating from a flashlight to warm up the thermometer, which is also known as “The Old Flashlight” trick.

- Jo immediately senses he’s lying and actively tries to make his time at home more miserable than it would’ve been at school in the second half of the episode by making him drink beet soup, forcing him to wrap himself up in bed instead of watching television downstairs and asking him to help her wind yarn??? Weird.

- To counter all of that, Matt ends up eating hot peppers and putting ice cubes down his pants. This caused him to actually fall sick somehow. Umm, what?

Drama in School

We get our first introduction to the school heartthrob Ethan Craft

- He is also portrayed as the ‘cool-bro’ dude at school and I instantly picked up on the kind of character he is initially meant to be. I am very glad he become a lot nicer and more likable as the series went on, although his IQ did suffer along the way.

- Gordo thinks Lizzie and Miranda are being ridiculous for worrying so much about how their school pictures will end up looking like in their school yearbook. For boys in that age bracket, they are usually much more immature than girls. Gordo is indeed the anomaly in this case as he is often the voice of reason on this show.

A prime example of B*tch Stole My Look

- We then come to find out that Kate Sanders and Miranda are wearing the same exact outfit. Dear Miranda, “Big snot-face snot-head” is not a good comeback. I repeat, not a good comeback at all.

Time for School Pictures

- I find it weird how taking your school picture at this school is like going to the torture chamber. All the add-on horror movie sound effects did not help at all.

- Gordo surprisingly ends up doing what Ethan suggested him to do, which is to do the smudged stoned face instead of smiling. Anyhow, he looks good either way. Another thing, it’s good to witness Gordo actually cave in to peer pressure; It makes him seem more ‘real’, if that makes any sense.

I remember not being too fond of Parker

- We get our first appearance of Parker Mackenzie, who is actually still well-remembered by fans. Lizzie asks Parker if she could lend her blouse to her but she burned Lizzie good by saying “I heard you were begging people for their clothes. Everybody thinks that’s really creepy”. I actually agree with you Parker.

- Gordo the savior helps Lizzie by stocking up on some clothes he borrowed from the costumes department in his locker. He is such a good friend/future boyfriend.

Do y’all see their gazes at each other? So much chemistry!

Climax featuring Kate Sanders

- The show’s villain, Kate convinces a boy named Ed in art class to splash green paint on Miranda’s outfit but Lizzie intervenes and jumps in front of Miranda to save her and her outfit.

Lizzie is my hero!

Picture Day Results

- The pictures are in: Kate sneezed. Ethan smiled because of his mama. Miranda looks good. Gordo looks great. Lizzie looks awesome.

Final thoughts

- In this episode, wee are introduced to our lovable dummy with the smooth hair, Ethan Craft as well as one of the most notable side-characters, Parker Mackenzie.

- The B-plot concerning Matt and Jo Mcguire was weird and it wasn’t clear what the moral of the story was. I guess we can assume that pretending to be sick can sometimes make you actually sick?

- But I like the underlying lesson with the whole Picture Day ordeal, which is how you are inside is more important than your appearance but it is still not a bad thing to care about what other people think of you.

I feel quite lost. The synopsis read as a young girl who is forced to confront her past as her sex tape wrecks havoc on her future. The sex tape is legit the last thing on everyone's minds. Like, yeah it's mentioned here or there but I feel like it's grasping at straws. It just feels like it was shoved in at last second because someone thought that family conflict wasn't enough, which honestly it wasn't.
