hello! ive read your guide on demonolatry and it made me really interested in learning more. what books do you recommend for a beginner? im more interested in a modern approach rather than theistic
Hello, how are you?
I'd recommend The complete book of demonolatry written by S. Connolly, she explains really well about what demons are, what are they like, how to contact them, their information such as personality, enns, appearances, as well as she talks about meditation, demonic rituals, alchemy, Qliphoth, a lot of stuff, really. It's a lot of information in just 300 pages or so, but personally helped me a lot when I was beginning!
Some would say that Michael W. Ford's books complement Conolly's really well, though I don't know, I've just started reading Apotheosis. It talks a lot about Lucifer and the path of the left hand. Plus, he is quite modern too! So you can look into him as well.
Encyclopedia of demons and demonology by Rosemary Ellen Guiley is quite interesting too! She compiles many existing demons and their stories. It's great to get to know them!
I hope this helps you! ^^

Demonology for Beginners: Part 1
I have several hundred books in my library, so this is a very brief selection, aimed at beginners.
Most of these can be found on kindle. (With one or two exceptions)
.
On Demons
Ars Goetia
The Devil’s Grimoire: A System of Psychic Attack by Moribus Mortlock (On how to use Devils for magical purposes)
Demons, the Devil, and Fallen Angels by Marie D. Jones & Larry Flaxman
Liber Asmodeus by Diablito Ordo Al-Ghoul (A Newer edition named Asmodeus exists, but not on Kindle. I recommend getting both, as the information covers different grounds, for all that the newer edition is more comprehensive.)
Demonality: Incubi & Succubi by Sinistrari of Ameno (17th Century) (New Ed. by Tarl Warwick)
A Brief History of Angels and Demons by Sarah Bartlett
Demonology: Sorting Facts from Fiction: A field guide of Demons in cristianity by Riley Star (The most basic beginner book of Demons and Demonology possible. HIGHLY recommended reading for a beginner. Oversimplified, but a great place to start. Comes with a list of some of the better known demons.)
.
On the Darkness, Hell, and the Left-Handed Path
Lords of the Left-Handed Path: Forbidden Practices and Spiritual Heresies by Stephen E. Flowers (Recommended by the Temple of Set)
Pacts With the Devil by Black (In all fairness a history lesson with a number of magical principles that are useful to know on top.)
The Penguin Book of Hell (Penguin Classics)
.
Novels that Portray Demons More or Less Accurately
(Take it with a pinch of salt. It’s still fiction. But rather good fiction.)
Mr. B. Gone by Clive Barker
The Devil’s Mistress by J.W. Brodie-Innes (Based on a true story dating back to the witch trials. True to real events as far as can be documented.)
The Magus by Alex Sumner (VERY Accurate...for the specific demons and magic involved. Be aware many other demons are far less dangerous.)
.
YouTube Videos:

Notes
Some people would recommend the works of S. Connolly, but I personally find that person a bit too quixotic when it comes to demons. They are good for ideas, but following everything in them could prove...risky.
Demons are not friendly spirits or deities. They are not nice or benevolent just to be kind. They want something, even if that something is to seduce you to join the dark delights of Hell. Or offerings you may give them.
.
I realize this can seem a bit scary at first glance. And perhaps I do go a bit deep into the Darker aspects of Demon and Demonology.
But keep in mind that Demons are not your enemies. They are your Allies and Friends.
At least that is what you hope to achieve.
Hell can seem like a bad place to those who are not at home with Darkness, Wickedness, Cruelty, and Suffering.
But those who have known these things, who accept them, will find it a very nice and inviting home.
Working with Demons are not for the squeamish. It’s not some fashion fad to follow and then discard. And it’s not for those who cannot take it seriously and do the work you need to do.
But do it right, and you can have all the Wealth, Wisdom, Secrets, and Power in the world laid at your feet.
And in the end, you will find out if you are one of the few whom will find a Home in Hell... or if it’s simply not for you.

tbh the zelda games' deal changes with every game.
long story short zelda (usually a princess) and link (the hero) are stuck in an endless cycle in which they eternally reincarnate to fight some sort of great evil (usually ganon/ganondorf) that threatens the kingdom of hyrule/a random kingdom/the world.
skyward sword is the first cycle, in which the master sword, a blade that banishes evil, is created and demise (some kind of incarantion of evil and darkness and also probably the first ever incarnation of ganondorf) curses link and zelda to repeat the cycle throughout the ages.
for the gameplay you fight monsters, explore dungeons and solve some usually pretty simple puzzles (except in botw and totk, which really deviate from the norm gameplay wise and have some much more complex puzzle solving). puzzle solving is a lot more present in 2d zeldas while movement and combat is a lot more focused on in 3d zeldas.
for beginners i recommend ocarina of time or wind waker for 3d zelda and oracle of ages/seasons for 2d zelda (a link to the past is also a classic but its actually pretty tough so its not my first pick for a beginner)
i see!! i did know about the cycles and whatnot (if only because just today i watched a video about demonology in zelda lmao).
i suppose more of my questions revolve around the common threads of worldbuilding in the games..... there are a million examples i could give but one big one is that i still don't understand the relation between 'ganon' and 'ganondorf' and at this point i'm too afraid to ask
ironically enough the zelda game i have most experience (albeit limited and now distant) playing is wind waker and while it's gorgeous, nothing else about that minimal contact inspired further investigation and in fact spurred me further away... i've still no aspirations to play any of them, but it's possible i'll put on a playthrough as background noise or something you dig

Dr Ludwig and the Devil by SV Linwood

Play the game (IFComp) See other reviews of the game
============= Synopsis
Join esteemed mad scientist Dr Ludwig as he faces the greatest challenge of his nefarious career: making a deal with the Devil and coming out on top. Research demonology! Read legal documents! Face off against the world’s least effective torch and pitchfork-wielding mob! All this and more!
============= Other Info
Dr Ludwig and the Devil is a Glulxe parser, submitted to the 2023 Edition of the IFComp.
Status: Completed Genre: Comedy
CW: /
============= Playthrough
Played: 8-Oct-2023 Playtime: around 45min (im slow) Rating: - [IFComp vote] Thoughts: But what if you tricked the devil?
============= Review
Dr Ludwig and the Devil is a small parser game, where Dr Ludwig recounts a time where he made a deal with the Devil, and find a way to keep his soul. The parser is fairly beginner friendly, including an external walkthrough and in-game hints. I used the walkthrough to solve some puzzles.
Spoilers ahead. It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.
If the blurb didn't catch your eye, the introduction inside the game surely should. Mixing Drs. Faust and Frankenstein lore with a good dash of humour, Dr Ludwig and the Devil is a delightful small parser cracking laughs left and right. From the witty dialogue, to the descriptions of rooms, reading through the pages of a book or failing to act accordingly, the game just wants to make you cackle*. It is here for a good and fun time! *also... why do you mean you can't do magic in France >.<
There's a lot to love about the game: the puzzles are reasonably simple, but you get plenty of help if needed (thank you for the hints!); the characters are all delightful in their own way, and have a whacky reason to be where they are; the overall shtick of the game is just fun to boot! It is entertaining and there is never a dull moment.
While I don't have much experience in what's to be expected or not in a parser in terms of puzzles, I found the whole mechanic with the devil pretty interesting (it was fun to order him around, hehehe). And if you mess up (which I did quite a bit), you don't get punished for it - you just get a witty response before you're sent on your way.
The characters are still the highlight of the game, from the mad scientist striving to attain godhood - oh but oops something keep going wrong and now I'm being chased out of my manor again - to the pitchfork mob acting like a HOA* with their contracts, every character in this game has a special flavour of wittiness and charm, with jokes to boot! Interacting with the NPCs, especially diving into plain regular conversations with them, adds a delightful layer to the game (they're just like us, normal peeps with normal problems**). *also... the head of the group is a illiterate legalese lover. xD **honestly, I might side with the pitchforks after talking with them...
Fun time!

Conjuring Dark Spirits
Tumblr media
When I made my post about the types of spirits witches are likely to encounter, I got some comments saying that it was wrong of me to discourage baby witches from reaching out to demons. On the other hand, I’ve recently been getting a lot of hate comments on my YouTube channel accusing me of “leading vulnerable young people to the Devil.” Clearly, the subject of demons and their role in witchcraft needs some clarification.
As I’ve said before, witchcraft in and of itself has nothing to do with demons, and most witches don’t work with demons at all. If you don’t believe in demons, or if you do believe in them and don’t care to bring them into your practice, feel free to skip this post.
But, to be fair, some witches do include demonic forces in their practice, and find it to be deeply beneficial. If that sounds intriguing to you, read on.
First, let’s get some definitions out of the way. When I say “demon,” I am referring to dark spirits that are malevolent towards mankind and/or directly oppose the will of the gods. This concept is older than the Abrahamic religions, dating back to some of the oldest known religions. Working with demons does not mean working within an Abrahamic system.
With that said, it follows that not all demonic witchcraft is Satanic in nature. But in reality, contrary to popular belief, Satanists don’t work with demons at all.
The term “Satanism” was popularized by Anton Levay, the author of The Satanic Bible, who was an atheist. To this day, the Church of Satan is an atheist organization that denies the existence of both the Christian God and the Devil. For Levay and the Satanists who followed in his footsteps, Satan is an archetype or symbol that represents the parts of human nature demonized by Christianity, such as pride, individualism, and ambition. Satanists use this symbol in ritual, but do not actually believe in or worship Satan or any other higher power.
Anyone who calls on demons or devils in ritual, rather than simply using them as symbols, is not practicing Satanic magic. Devil worship is a Christian heresy, and has nothing to do with Satanism, paganism, or any other religion.
There have been historical cases of devil worship — allegedly. Most accusations of witchcraft during the European and American witch hunts included accusations of consorting with Satan, performing black masses, and other nefarious deeds. Most, if not all, of these accusations were fabricated, and the people accused were never involved in such practices.
Ironically, it’s not in witchcraft and folk magic (the magic of poor people), but in ceremonial magic (the magic of the wealthy elite) that demons have historically been called upon.
Ceremonial magic, which gets its name from its elaborate rituals, is the magic practiced by Aleister Crowley, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and other prominent figures in Western occultism. Ceremonial magic is very heavily based on (appropriated) Jewish theology and practice, and most of the people who popularized it were culturally Christian. A major feature of ceremonial magic is the invocation and evocation of spiritual entities, including both angels and demons from Jewish and Christian lore.
For example, Goetic magic is a form of ceremonial magic that revolves around the conjuration of demons. Modern Goetic magic is mostly based on The Lesser Key of Solomon, a 17th-century grimoire that contains information on demonology. Like all forms of ceremonial magic, Goetic magic uses highly structured rituals with multiple sources of protection for the magician, including sacred geometry and the use of sigils. The idea here is that the magician is calling forth these demons into a controlled environment, where they have the upper hand. This allows them to deal with demons without putting themselves at risk. Even so, Goetic magicians would do well to remember the first rule of conjuration: never summon what you cannot banish!
Goetic magic is complex, dense, and not at all beginner-friendly. If you have an interest in this type of magic, I encourage you to begin by researching ceremonial magic in general. (Keep in mind that, if you are not Jewish, you will need to take care to avoid using appropriated Jewish theology in your practice.) Familiarize yourself with these concepts and perform a few evocations for more benevolent figures before you delve into the world of Goetia.
But surely deals with demons don’t only happen in ceremonial magic, right? After all, what about all those legends about people meeting the Devil at the crossroads and making a deal?
The story of the crossroad spirit who makes deals with humans is much older than Christianity, and this spirit is not always identified at the Devil, or even a demon. Several Greek deities hold this role in various myths, including Hecate, Hermes, and Pan. In several African Diaspora Religions, the Orisha Elegua is associated with crossroads. In Haitian Vodou, this role goes to the lwa Papa Legba. None of these spirits are evil, and in fact some of them are seen as protective figures.
American folk tales about meeting the Devil at the crossroads reflect a much older myth that has been adapted to fit a Christian worldview. The “Devil” in these myths behaves very differently from the Christian Satan, and witches who wish to work with this figure may find it useful to think of him as a separate entity. Author Aaron Oberon simply calls this entity “The Witch Father,” which seems like an appropriate title for someone who haunts crossroads and other liminal spaces and gives witches the gift of magic.
And that’s the thing. When it comes to working with demons and other “dark” entities, it all comes down to your intention. If you are setting out to summon the embodiment of evil, you’re setting yourself up for some serious spiritual mischief at best, and genuine harm at worst. But if you seek hidden knowledge, defiance of social order, and the healing power of darkness, you may well have a very positive experience — even if you call that entity by a name like “Satan.”
