The Pacino Variant

Since I found out that JAW got inspiration from Al Pacino to play some of Carmy's layers I immediately started thinking about Frankie and Johnny's dynamic and how it was all so messy in their relationship before it got to the good part. Granted, JAW was not inspired by Johnny, but by a different role Al Pacino played, but still. It got me thinking about how this very Austenian love story, of course, very realistic and bittersweet had certain points in common with Sydcarmy and once I started I just couldn't stop drawing parallels between the sydcarmy dynamic and the frankjohnny one because F&J was a very atypical comedy, just like The Bear and that's why many viewers now don't even understand how The Bear is a comedy, which it is, of course: A noir one. Back then, something similar kinda happened with Frankie & Johnny, it flopped as a rom-com but it became a cult movie and was critically acclaimed.

Context: they met while working together at a diner.

The main characters were described as: "lonely little people struggling to find love."

Rolling Stone's review back then read the following:

"Somehow Mr. Marshall, Mr. McNally, and their superb leading actors are able to retain the intimacy of their material. They also retain the story's fundamental wariness about romance, even when everything about Ms. Pfeiffer and Mr. Pacino has the audience wondering why they don't simply fall into each other's arms."

See? Sounds very Sydcarmy to me, building intimacy while NOT dating, Frankie (Michelle Pfeiffer) is all business-no love, a tough cookie, she's been burnt before so she doesn't let any new guy into her life

and Johnny has to do the hard work to convince her (which Carm is not doing bc he rather denies his own feelings and deflects onto Claire as both this amazing meta by @Chefkids and my own humble opinion point out). In Johnny's case, there's no Claire but there is a rather complicated past that also conditions his choices and Frankie doesn't make it any easier on him, etc.

So my point is that the whole Sydcarmy back and forth before it actually happens, which I already mentioned here I think is gonna be more of a cliffhanger kinda thing bc before we get to that part they need to be at each other's throats, Carmy's relationship with C has to crash and burn, The Bear needs to win a bunch of awards and hopefully get out of debt, which will be S3's main focus, along with Nat's baby that's gonna be a total game changer in terms of the Berzatto family's dynamic, etc... when all of those boxes are checked ✅✅✅ then we will venture into Sydcarmy territory on Storer's terms. And I can't help but wonder if that transition from friends to lovers is gonna be kinda like F&J's, I think it might, because it sounds Storer-friendly. I'm not talking about the endgame per se, just the transition.

Also it’s 100% okay and actually great that you’re protective of your identity! The internet is no joke nowadays, and it’s always better to be safe than sorry. You never know anymore, sadly. As for anything I’d like to know, I don’t really mind! Share whatever you’re comfortable with.

Onto some SM:

Karl will, at some point, become the bigger nommer of the fiancés. Sapnap and Quackity don’t want to make him uncomfortable by storing him, so they usually don’t unless they have full permission and he’s in his right mind (ie not having a panic attack). I’m working on a fic right now where he becomes the storer to comfort his fiancés, which isn’t a first but it’s still rare for Karl to do so. It becomes pretty frequent after that.

Sapnap and Dream get to a point where they’re both more.. instinctual with their games. George doesn’t know about these games, and the fiancés don’t either. Most netherborns have a prey drive, and Dream has the instinct to hide from predators. There’s been one time where Dream egged Sapnap on until he was just about running completely on instincts, only present enough to make sure he didn’t actually hurt Dream. It’s an agreed upon game, but Sapnap feels guilty about it sometimes.

Dream’s tried playing this game with Quackity one on one too, because of the feral boys hide and seek, but Quackity completely broke down after the game was said and done because he had thought he accidentally hurt Dream during it. Which he did nick Dream with his fang by mistake, but all it did was bruise and Dream did not care at all. Sapnap and Dream agree not to let him in on what they’re up to after that incident.

Tommy grows used to being stored as a teasing thing or a game, and thus when he starts getting clingy he tries pulling the stunts he pulls with his usual preds (the fiancés, occasionally Dream, SBI) with Tubbo so he’d get stored. Tubbo’s caught onto the schtick, but at first he was rightly confused. Techno wound up accidentally letting Tubbo in on the truth one day when they were both getting logs from the forest for their wood furnaces/fireplaces. (I ain’t letting that house detail go it’s too nice I wish I had one)

Speaking of Dream and Tommy, they have done games like what Dream and Sapnap do. Tommy doesn’t have instincts, but he likes rough-housing, so they switch off on pred and prey depending on the day. They always start off big so that they can wrestle.

George and Karl start hanging out more after the breakdown, though a lot of the time they both wind up napping. The fiancés tell Karl he’s gotta stop before he becomes another George.

Karl and George have also stored the other before, depending on the situation. A lot of the time it’s for comforting, but sometimes it’s to help the other (I imagine this is when George still has issues swallowing people and Karl’s pretty new to it as well, the timeline is skewed lol)

This is a Goatlings rant I wrote in response to a thread that's been bugging me lately. After finishing it, I realized that it would accomplish nothing for anybody, but I still want the catharsis of making it public, so I'm posting it here. Please pay it no mind if you don't play that game.

Okay, this thread has bothered me since it was first posted, but I'm saying something now because it's bothering me even more with the kind of support it's getting.

Everyone on this thread… you do realize that just "banning" this behavior wouldn't stop it from happening? Like, I think most of y'all know that and just want to voice your grievances for the behavior, but you're not offering a real solution to the problem and are just looking to punish people that don't share your playstyle.

I don't like it either, but someone saying that their goat is for "storage" is just giving the courtesy of telling you not to waste your time offering on their listing. If storing goats was "banned," people would just stop adding "storage" to their listing and continue to ignore/reject offers for their goat, which wastes everyone's time.

It's not like you can moderate this kind of behavior to "make" the person trade their goat away if they list them. Sometimes people just don't make offers that the trader wants or thinks is fair. How could you realistically tell the difference between that and people that don't intend to accept any offer for their goat? Goats that are in the Trade Center for over 2 weeks are already hidden from view, so eventually all storage goats get hidden, while people actually trying to trade their goats tend to relist them. So it's annoying in the moment, but storage goats don't clog up the Trade Center any more than goats that just never get traded "clog" it up.

But let's explore possible solutions:

Let's suppose that instead of being "hidden", goats that are listed for more than 2 weeks are returned to the user's profile. This could discourage users to stop storing goats because the process has been made much more annoying, but what is actually being gained for everyone else?

Nothing changes for people making "legit" trades, because ALL goats that are listed for more than 2 weeks are now being returned, so traders still have to remake their listings, which they were likely going to do anyway, and determined users who REALLY don't want their goats on their profile will now keep relisting their storage goat, clogging up the Trade Center again.

Any kind of "fix" for the Traders, like an "easy relist button," would also be available to "Storers", so we just wind up at the same problem: having to separate legit trades from storage trades, except it's worse for literally everyone.

A real solution to this problem is to offer a feature that would appease this behavior, which for the most part is the inability to "hide" goats on your user profile.

Like, people who think this is a way to "show-off," have you considered the reason why storage goats are usually high value or otherwise unique? If it was to "show-off," then these expensive storage goats would keep getting relisted to maximize the number of people looking at them, but you generally don't see that happening. Storage goats tend to be listed once and then disappear into the void forever. But, if the problem is that they can't hide goats on their profile, then this is probably a case of the user not actually resonating with goat's design, but it being too valuable to want to trade at this time. Most people just aren't so generous as to abandon goats they don't like if they know they're worth millions of SS. At the same time, trading for that much money may seem daunting when they're still on the fence about wanting to keep the goat or not.

I know I've been in that position where I have a very valuable goat that just doesn't quite resonate with me: I've owned probably 3 different Candy Bones goats over the years because I keep going back-and-forth on whether I like it enough to keep when I couldn't think of a good treasure theme for it. Instead of wasting millions of SS rebuying something that I already had because I was lacking inspiration, I could have just "stored" the goat until I finally came up with a good treasure + name idea for it.

Sometimes the situation isn't money driven: there are a lot of Basic Grays in "storage" too, usually because they have a name that the user wants to keep, but may not have a "suitable" AD for.

This kind of storing is directly the result of duplicate names being impossible, but that is a whole other conversation. However, I do sympathize with this form of storage even more than the first example:

I have had goats with names I wanted to keep, but traded away because I was running out of slots and I would rather keep goats that I had a good AD + name + treasure combo rather than just one or two of those. Usually when this happens, I will change the goat's name before abandoning/trading them so that in the future if I have enough slots to get it back, it'll still be there. After all, if it was free when I first thought of it, then it'll probably be free later. Nonetheless, there have been occasions where it turns out that someone swiped the name from underneath me because I freed it up. So even though I might have thought of the name first, someone else got it because I was careless enough to "free it up" when I didn't have a good AD for it.

I know, I'm clearly the one at fault in that story: if I really liked the name that much to be sad when someone else grabbed it, then I should have just kept them and accepted that they would be "incomplete" instead of "freeing" them. But, if I had "stored" the goat, then I wouldn't have had that problem, I could have just kept the name until I figured something out for it instead of losing what was arguably rightfully mine. But, I learned that lesson, and right now I do have a couple of goats that are using "placeholder" ADs (BurgerTime and Sumairu) while I hold out hope that an AD that really resonates with me and suits them gets released.

Now, maybe some people would consider this ideal behavior: just "sucking it up" and keeping these goats that I really don't want to show off on my profile instead of "storing" them, but it's frustrating for me too: I don't like having "incomplete" goats on my profile. If I had a place to put these goats without clogging up the Trade Center, then I would. The only reason I don't personally store goats is that despite my defenses so far, I still find goat storing incredibly annoying to deal with. I check the Trade Center daily, so I know how annoying sorting through storage goats can really be, and I don't blame anyone for being upset about it. BUT, I know this is just the result of the site not having an alternative feature.

I told all these anecdotes to help illustrate why some users may participate in this behavior, and why it is rarely to be malicious. Goat storing is the result of the failure/lack of other features. Trying to "ban" users from this behavior is just going to make this all more annoying for everyone. Yes, it sucks having to sort though storage goats, I'm not saying it isn't, but the solution isn't to ban the behavior without an alternative. Instead, the site should be offering new features to curb the behavior, and wouldn't you know, "Goat Daycare" is something that staff is considering. While it could honestly be years before it's actually implemented, the fact that such a feature is being considered at all implies that staff is at least somewhat aware that this is a feature that people want.

TLDR: You're not wrong for thinking this behavior is annoying, but banning the behavior outright isn't the solution.

Death Smiles on the 26

           It is in certain moments that we witness something simple and beautiful and rare. So it was one summer night on the #26 bus.

           I remember the weather being quite humid for a June evening in Cleveland. The air conditioning on the bus was temperamental at best. It spluttered off and on, forcing most riders to crack the windows for even the faintest amount of breeze. The atmosphere inside the bus was chaotic; music playing, loud conversations, the banging of some mechanical part not quite working correctly, phones ringing. I’ve learned to tune it out, as most people do. You have to create a quiet mental space for yourself when riding public transportation. It feels like this invisible barrier between you and others, making it quite easy to not notice the things around you. Most of the people on the bus that night were in their own headspace and not minding who was getting on or off.

           We turned the corner onto W. 25th and Storer, where the buildings are boarded up and the bus shelters have broken glass. The doors creak open and an older black man steps onto the bus wearing a business suit- white shirt, neatly pressed jacket, black tie, perfectly shined shoes. He has a full Afro, neatly shaped, that fits him like a crown. I see him often on this route even though he never frequents the same stops. He is an older man- more than middle aged but not decrepit- sitting with perfect posture. His back is stiff and straight as if there is a steel rod under his suit. He holds his chin high. I’ve never heard him speak, but I imagine his voice to be deep and rich as a voice reserved for kings and other nobility.

            He sits in a section at the front of the bus, back pressed up to the windows, allowing him a full view of the passengers. I am sitting in the third row from the door and there is a mother and child in the seat in front of me. The woman is young and the child doesn’t look to be more than 2 or 3 years old. The boy’s chubby legs are dangling off the seat, a million miles from the ground. The young mother is entranced by her phone, typing furiously and paying the boy no mind.

             It was in that moment that the boy locked eyes with the older man.

             The man looks back at the boy intensely, wordlessly, and it seems as if they aren’t even breathing. Suddenly the man salutes, a very rigid and proper salute, and holds a wrinkled hand to his brow as if it had always been there.  The little boy salutes back, his pudgy hand incapable of truly mimicking the man, so he raises a little curled fist and places it just off center from his forehead. The man salutes again, this time with a big smile on his face. The little boy salutes back with a tiny smirk. They play this game back and forth, each time the old man smiling broadly with a look of pure joy in his eyes and the child’s grin getting bigger and bigger.

             And no one notices. On a bus ride filled with people arguing, coffee being spilled on seats, children crying, and teenagers trying to scam their way onto the bus without fare, a rare and beautiful moment happened. The mother sitting right next to the little boy didn’t even raise her eyes. Only I noticed, because that’s what I do.

             I like to think that the old man who never talks is Death. With his regal posture and calm demeanor, I imagine he walks among us every day, silently looking at people, observing us, deciding who is next. Despite the dreary position he holds, perhaps every once in a while something really beautiful comes along. A perfect moment. A moment where a little boy looks up and salutes back. I want to think that if even Death can give pause during his day of collecting souls to truly lose himself in the moment and experience pure joy, so can we.

Can't stop yawning since I noticed. It's so fucking cliché. Honestly, I expected better from him.

2 women disputing the man's love/attention is as stereotyped as the opposite, which is what Grant/Goldwyn and Ballard/Foley did, very well btw, many years ago on Scandal where the interracial ship was the actual center of the main plot from the very get-go.

And a bunch of other shows also went there. It's a classic.

BORING.

In 2024 there were at least 1000 more and better ways to keep slow-burning the 2 lead characters if he didn't wanna serve that dish yet. Also, why? "Clearly" Claire's character was not unanimously well received by the audience, so why fight it and push us? In fact, Claire's character was soooo not well received by most part of the audience that even some non-Sydcarmy truthers don't ship Carmy with her either. So WTAF?!? I figured out Storer's agenda but not his motives, though. WHY!? Why go through all this trouble and damage control for a character that we just don't want? She has her stands, sure, but they are certainly not the majority, so why doesn´t Storer see this, accept it, and move on? Why bring out the press guns to try and build and impose a narrative of how great Claire is and how well Carmy and her fit, or how she could be great for him because she will surely teach him how to open his fucking heart and yatta, yatta, yatta... why bombard us with all those editorials we are seeing in the media and will mostly keep on seeing moving forward till S3 premiers at least, that are obviously signed off by him personally... WHY?!?! It's like when kids don't wanna eat their veggies so the parents try to disguise them in other foods so they do eat them and they get used to them and that's how they train their palates. Right? Storer is training us to educate our palates into liking Claire with all those articles and Claire propaganda, he's really putting some effort here. WHY?!!?

I wanna like whatever character I feel like liking, Christopher, I don't wanna be fucking induced into accepting one of your choosing, I already chose. I WANT SYDNEY ADAMU.

Hear me out! I'm not alone here, as a matter of fact, I'm part of the fucking majority.

I WANT SYDNEY ADAMU. And more importantly, Carmy wants her too.

I cannot emphasize how completely unhinged “I don’t want to share it I’m sorry” is to have written, approved, and then shot???? sydney just said “I need your focus like you need mine.” she could have stopped there. the second part was SOOOO UNNECESSARY LMAO. like she’s just admitting out right that she wants all of carmen!! demanding the most intimate version of his attention that someone else has!! that someone else being someone he’s romantically involved with!! sydney doesn’t want to SHARE. she wants him! she fucking said so!! and she’s not taking no for an answer!!! and you’re asking y people are reading it that way? go to hell!!!!
