don’t you sometimes just hate how hard it is to find many characters with male or gn readers? even with the gay characters?

ur post about queerbaiting and the dismissal of people in fandom to critical analysis is so incredibly true thank you. i feel like marcille's writing in the anime has been super misogynistic a lot of the time and every time i bring this up all anyone wants to say is "well maybe this isn't for you! and you shouldn't watch the show!" like. i don't think this is about taste lmao, i am analyzing the text in front of me and coming to conclusions about the craft of it.
[This is in reference to this post]
YES!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
It is so so frustrating!!!!
It's like being at a restaurant and being served a bunch of delicious appetizers, but then one of the bread appetizers is literally just a plate of crumbs; and then when you're like, "Hey, uhh, why are we being served literal crumbs?", a bunch of the other folks eating at the restaurant are like,
"WELL HOW ABOUT YOU JUST DON'T EAT HERE THEN??!? YOU MUST NOT BE THAT HUNGRY, SO JUST FIND ANOTHER RESTAURANT AND DON'T EAT WITH US!!"
And maybe they say it politely, but "Aw, sorry, maybe this restaurant just isn't for you 💖" is just trading out an aggressive dismissive tone for a patronizing dismissive tone. It's the same message.
And it's like! I was honestly happy to move on from the crumbs once my complaint was acknowledged because the meal overall is still delicious, but then all these folks got SUPER WEIRD AND DEFENSIVE ABOUT IT, so now I find myself double-checking all the other dishes -- and, actually, you know what those eggs DO look a Iittle misogynistic undercooked!!!!

if i had a nickel for every time people will use a scene of girl jumping into water to save a guy who's her FRIEND, whom was basically on the brink of death to prove that she's in love with him, I'd have two nickels. which isn't a lot, but it's absolutely fucking irritating that it happened twice

so tired of ppl that werent actually on tumblr back in the day trying to say what tumblr sexymen are 🙄🙄🙄
tumblr sexymen started as ppl complaining that a majority of tumblr userbase Only cared about Skinny Tall White Guy to the point that if a show they liked didnt have one. they would just. make one.
the act of turning a character into a skinny tall white guy was what made a character a TUMBLR sexyman :/ characters like the onceler got added to the sexyman roster as the term grew in popularity and its definition became All Skinny Tall White Guys, not just the ones that tumblr users created

Do u remember Goldie goldenglow?
Sorry Anon, this probably won’t be the answer you want
The triangle shaped baby that both Poof/Peri and Foop had crushes on, right? I might’ve watched the episode once, but I’ll be honest, I was very much distancing myself from the original show by then. I only recognized the name because of fanart that pops up when I look up references on google images. I’ve also never been a big fan of Love Triangles or Give The Actual Literal Infants A Love Interest (Often For The Sake Of Heteronormativity), so I probably didn’t even finish the episode if I did watch it as a kid
If they brought her back, it’d be interesting to see how they update her design, though

So, a long while back I found an author with some interesting world-building ideas. They'd maybe slip into "crack"-territory a bit too often for me to recommend it, but like... I didn't really mind it that much? And they'd written a LOT, so I was running high on that "fics to read"-energy.
Then, a few weeks ago, I came across a scene and-... And it made me start thinking about "the underlying values" of the author. Not in the sense of "they're secretly a Republican" (thank god), but in the sense of an (in hindsight) hilariously blatant feeling of heteronormativity.
Yeah, they didn't write X character as gay, but that's no need to point fingers (canon doesn't call him gay, so it's fine). And okay, maybe they created a crack-ship for one of their fics that they got heavily invested in and are now reusing, but like... it's convenient for plot-reasons so knock yourself out? And maybe leaning heavily on "women are mysterious" for cracky dad-jokes is in bad taste, but it's a cracky kind of scene?
But... it just keeps coming. They've basically gone out of their way to create ships everywhere, and they're all straight? And it's constantly played as a "and they make each other better people" as if they need romance to become such. The people who aren't in relationships are being pushed to become romantically involved (because it will make them better people), and the narrative thinks that this is reasonable and well-meaning (despite the threat of a literal war at their doorstep).
Combined with some comments from the author about being very dismissive about people who don't think marriage is important, because they actually "can't get married" and are crying sour-grapes about "not wanting to get married"?
And then on top of that, the reoccurring harem-plots? Where one dude gets lots of girls, with maybe a tiny little bit of Les-Yay thrown into the mix?
It made me sit back and really look at their stories, and... it's kind of painful? Like, I was curious about their fics, and now it's just-... How can I trust them to write interesting things, if their feelings on "romance" (which often plays an integral part in their stories) is the single most boring vanilla-ass shit that I've ever encountered (from someone who wasn't an insane Republican)?
