KOSA or the Kids Online Safety Act is an Internet bill being pushed by the American government. It claims its purpose is to "protect" kids, but really its methods of enforcing this is mass censorship and control of the Internet. The passing of this bill would lead to LGBTQ+ related information, reproductive healthcare, and other topics that government officials may find "dangerous" to children be restricted or censored.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

In the website linked above, there is a petition you can sign as well as a pre-filled message you can send. You can also write to your representatives, and if you don't want to come up with an entire message, I've attached sample scripts. Spread information about this, and do what you can. This bill being passed would mean an era of censorship for the Internet.

i know many people might know about this, but the shit bill that is kosa has a chance of being put into effect in the next week if that does happen, social media is gonna be almost completely removed. that's not just tumblr or twitter, but things like ao3, deviantART, or tiktok. there's a link on this post to a petition to stop it. it only asks for your email and name, so if you're fine with that, please take the time to sign it.

if it does get passed, i just want to say from the bottom of my heart that this website has given me the best time of my life these past few years. i don't care if you're just randomly finding this post while scrolling, or if you're a long time mutual. i'm gonna miss all of you.

hello to my 16 followers on here and anyone else who stumbles upon this post can you guys do me a quick favor if you live in the US?

Tell your senators that KOSA/Earn It/other internet bills that are similar will not protect anyone.

There are a lot of people that are wording this better than I am but this is gonna censor the internet of anything “inappropriate” (which basically means LGBTQIATS+ content and overall mental health stuff that can prevent kids from killing themselves) so like yeah can we make that law not happen please?

Oh yea also if it does anyone above the age of 16(?) will need to upload their drivers licenses to access the internet and even then all of your personal info will be out there for anyone to grab, plus it’ll be easier for predators to get away with harming kids if this passes, overall we wont be having a good time

Hey so KOSA (Kids Online Safety Act) is trying to come back.

It’s a direct threat to things like fanfiction and social media, and continues to perpetuate the idea that censorship is the only way to make things safe. This doesn’t help anyone, not even children. In reality it just opens up more invasion of our privacy (and more importantly the privacy of children!) and allows the government to control the internet in a very dangerous way. This is the kind of thing that paves the way for situations like China’s censorship.

This is not just about fanfiction. This is not just about social media. This creates an opportunity for people to control our freedom of speech on the internet, and gives them the ability to censor anything they deem offensive. LGBTQIA+ content, abortion and sexual healthcare information, and literally anything else.

This bill hides behind the facade of protecting children on the internet. However, the way it intends to do so is through censoring content such as queer resources, sex education, and with how our government is going, may censor activist content about what is going on in places like Palestine or Congo.

One idea proposed is making it required for most websites to require government ID (ex: drivers license) to make an account. Combined with the many bills framing drag, trans rights, or queer resources as child sexual abuse, queer people online could be wrongfully prosecuted under the basis of being child predators.

Not only is this bill harmful and immoral, it is straight up unconstitutional.

The first amendment of the US constitution grants all citizens the freedom of speech, freedom to petition, freedom of the press, and freedom to assembly. It also grants freedom of religious practice, but that doesn't appear to be affected by this bill from what I know.

This bill completely violates our granted right to the freedom of speech, petition, press, and assembly. This is a thinly veiled censorship bill under the guise of protecting children.

As this bill coincides with the suppression of free palestine protests and activism, anti boycott laws, anti queer bills and laws, and the introduction of project 2025, the United Statres continues to descend into censorship and white supremacy.

US CITIZENS: CALL YOUR LAWMAKERS AND TELL THEM YOU OPPOSE KOSA. FOR SOME OF US, IT IS OUR ONLY FORM OF ACTIVISM.
